This is an exciting, heartbreaking story of a young girl and her grandparents trying to escape Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge take over the country. This is a part of history I knew nothing about prior to this book. Chantrea and her grandparents must survive the long walk to the work camps, starvation, the animals of the jungle, a refugee camp and a flight to America. Then Chantrea must struggle with being in a new country where no one understands what it was like to experience what she went through. This gave lots of information on the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia and its people and culture.

I am finally done with this wonderful book. The ending had some great moments. One of them was Chantrea's father has finally came back to America. They are reunited and it is a very happy time. It was close to the holidays so Chantrea's Christmas wish finally came true. Now they can live happily and move forward to the future

Material is a little difficult in parts. However, a fabulous story that really makes you appreciate what we have. My kids loved it despite thinking it was tough to read in the beginning.

I apparently thought this book was good enough to read several times when I was about twelve and I still vividly remember many details.

I greatly enjoyed this book, when I read it, which was a long time ago. The story is heartbreaking, and any younger historical fiction lover would love it! We follow the main character, Chantrea Conway, a half-American half-Cambodian girl living in Phnom Penh when the Khmer Rouge evacuate the city. She is marched to a work camp, from which she finally escapes, and tries desperately to make it out of Cambodia alive, along with her grandparents.
