A wonderfully novel approach to the biography of Dominic Guzman, Koudelka lets the primary sources speak for themselves. After several introductory essays on the life, time, religious context, and approach of Dominic and the founding of the OP, Koudelka arranges excerpts from a few dozen of the most important contemporary primary sources (all but one from the 13th century) and presents them chronologically and by topic (The Personality of Dominic., Speaking with God, Speaking of God, Dominic and Women). The result is at once informative, moving, and unique.
Tugwell's translation (with some additions) is excellent and very approachable to a modern audience.
A great biography that I wish were more readily available.
