I don't know how many times I read this in my pre-teen years, but it was many. I was surprised to discover how much I'd forgotten, but it made it even more enjoyable as a bedtime read for my 8yo. Pleas for just one more chapter, cries of "No!" or "Yes!" all testified to the overall experience.
A book like an old b&w Western. Enjoyable but for me the story line was a bit tired and the writing stuffy, functional and not exactly elegant. (But then, that's what I think of Hemingway, so I might not be the measure of these things.) Some nice observations of people and of horses though. If I had read it as a child I would probably have loved it although even then the very 1950s male/female role assignments might have jarred with me. Very macho book. If it had been written post 1960 I would have given it a star less.
