Grabbed my attention from the first paragraph and kept it to the end. The language is at just the right level for my skills at this point—high beginner/low intermediate. I learned a lot and had fun doing it. Can’t wait to read the next 2 books in this series
Marcus L'uomo dei due mondi is a brilliant mix of history and language learning. The story is immersive, the vocabulary is well-structured, and the summaries and comprehension questions really help reinforce what you learn. Perfect for beginner to intermediate learners who want to improve their Italian in an enjoyable way!
For upper beginners. The story makes no sense, but that probably doesn't matter much. I personally thought there wasn't enough repetition of new vocabulary, but there was some.
The book does what it's supposed to do. It makes you read stuff in Italian and feel good about it. Bonus: It's not a story about cute kids. It reinforces vocabulary. Vikings out of time and place? Who cares? It's fiction. All good.
There is much to like a about this book: - The difficult level is spot on, for people after a few months of learning italian - The vocabulary is directly on the page opposite the text and ordered by appearance - The vocabulary doesn't translate only single words, but usually entire expressions - The story is splitt into chapters of 3-4 pages - And most importantly, the story is keept simple, yet engaging - even if you skip a few words, you can still follow along
But I have a huge caveat, something that bothered me endlessly while reading the book: THERE WERE NO VIKINGS IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE! Roman empire: 27BD-476AD Viking age: 793AD-1066AD (Source: Wikipedia)
Not only did they live during different time periods, the romans didn't even come close to (todays) Denmark, Sweden or Norway. They only made it until Belgium/Germany.
One might argue, this is a small slip, for a book for language learnes, but the THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE STORY IS THE ORIGIN OF THE MAIN CHARACTER.
In conclusion: Great book to train italian, as long as you don't expect a story in the historical roman empire, but rather in a made-up fairtale like version, were vikings and romans fought each other over land in Germany.
