Grace Geddes is out for revenge. If it’s the last thing she does, if it costs her every cherished penny or kills her, she will avenge her sister, assaulted and now lost forever. She sets off on her quest to find the man responsible, with only her furious determination and an aged soldier as her companions.
Ruairi mac Cailein wants only one peace. He realizes as soon as he stumbles upon Grace Geddes that there would be no peace in her company, not with her misbegotten plans and her entrancing blue eyes. When she begs his help, offering him a ransom in gold, he refuses. He’s carved out a wee perfect life for himself and what few men remain of the once proud and mighty mac Cailean force, delivering his own brand of justice, accountable to none but himself; he wants no part of her foolish schemes.
Grace is terrified by the dangerously brutal warrior but imagines he might be just what she needs to exact her revenge. After she manages to convince him to help her, they set off on a journey both perilous and unexpected, each discovering that their long-held beliefs about life and love are challenged mightily by the other.
As with all books in the Legends sieres, The Wolf of Carnoch Cross is a stand-alone novel. The characters from different books do sometimes interact, but these can be read in any order.
Wasn’t really vibing with this one in the beginning. I loved the couple though. I’m not one for the main plot being about traveling/camping. I wasn’t bored but it was slow compared to the recent books.
So I have read all books in this series and have enjoyed them very much…that is until this one.. while I love Ruairi and Grace, the vibe of the whole story was hard to get invested…. It read long, strange and boring at times..did not feel a real flow. While Graces back story was well flushed out, I did not feel the same regarding Ruairi, Andreas or the rest of his tribe. I believe this is the reason the flow just felt so off in this book.
Ms Ruger is one of my very fav authors, so this review hurts a bit (she is almost always a 5 🌟 review for me).. the sad part is, I initially gave this only 2 stars..I added one because it’s Ms Ruger and we all can have off times….
I very much enjoyed the previous 3 books and look forward to the next one…
Why is there not an epilogue in this book? What an abrupt ending. Why is there always some deep, dark, contrived secret? I am not happy with this. I may need a break from 1307 A. D.
I've noticed Ms. Ruger becoming braver as a writer in this series, delving into topics that she hasn't before but are authentic to the period. And her descriptiveness seems to have risen even another notch above her usual illustrative prose.
The first chapters of the story are captivating and exciting. Grace's backstory sets her up well for what ensues over the course of the book. She endures trials and tests of her mettle, discarding impractical proprieties along the way. But Grace is an enigma—she's kind yet murderous, she grieves yet has a bright smile, she's delicate yet strong, clever but innocent, and she doesn't acquiesce to traditional expectations for the female sex. She runs a large and prosperous keep that she can never call her own
Her counterpart Ruairi spends his time with his men along the river Iverson picking off marauders and evildoers one by one. He's had enough of watching his good men die in this evil war and chooses to fight the fight in his own way. Come to find out that Grace's mission should have been his own years ago and his guilt spurs him to action, lest Grace die seeking her revenge.
This is a story filled with uniqueness, suspense and romance. It ends in a satisfying way but there's still more to come, and that's a treat we can all look forward to in a future book.
Ruairi is the Wolf of Carnoch Cross, fighting against evil for those who can’t fight for themselves. When he is outnumbered by brigands and set upon his horse with a noose around his neck and his hands tied, the last thing he expected was a beautiful lass coming to his rescue. Grace is out for vengeance against a cruel man who attacked and ruined her young sister and left her pregnant and ultimately dead at childbirth. When she saves Ruairi, their journey begins in the most exciting way. Running from brigands, crossing a wild river, and more. I loved Ruairi from the start. Grace was a strong woman but a little naive and reckless. Loved the secondary characters as well and the storyline was great.
Delightful story telling. Rebecca Ruger writes a seductive tale of Scotland long ago. dangerous foes aplenty and stoic warriors abound - it's a wild And wooly ride. These highland tales are a bit different than what you would expect from the English variant- no courtly restraint from bedding the lasses is what I mean. It is a little annoying, the way they disregard the possibility of an unwed pregnancy, and seems recurrent in every book by this author, but I suppose these days readers expect it. Overall love it.
Ms. Ruger does it again the The Wolf. The story of Ruiry and Grace had a slow start but had me hooked after the first chapter! It is a great love story and had some adventure thrown in. Grace on her way to avenge her sister meets and saves her love. I wish it would have had an epilogue or is there more coming in another story?? I sure hope so! You will not be disappointed!!
Rhuari and Grace seek vengeance against a powerful war lord for cruel atrocities he committed against her sister and other war crimes that Rhuari witnessed during the Scottish war against England. They meet by accident while Grace is on her quest for revenge. There’s lots of action with a stubborn heroine and an equally surly and determined hero. This one was a page turner and I think you’ll love as much as I did.
Rebecca Ruger is the best writer of Highland Romances, hands down, and this story does not disappoint. She really knows how to get under the skin of her hero and heroine, you feel them to be real people. Every novel is emotional and the slow burn of the love story which culminates in 🔥 is always so well done. Highly recommended- thanks for another brilliant book!
It is a good book, but long. Some parts go a bit slow, but still worth the read. I would like to have had an epilogue even though they will have an appearance in a future book. Will definitely read more in the series. Hoping Ruairi's captain, Aindreas gets his own book.
This was a very intense story, come upon a handsome man being hung. Afterwards, bear drowning yo get away again from thieves. Then both sliced from same thieves. Get to a village for near human trafficking and another rescue. Then they discover they love each other, but a killer needs killing.
Good story. Well written. Ruari was rough, rugged , good looking and never smiled. Grace was the last female of her line but could not inherit. Grace was focused on killing the man, herself who was responsible for the death of her sister. No war but skirmishes with villains.
Another great book in the Highlander: The Legend Series I have enjoyed every book in this series. Each one is great in its own right as a stand alone book but if is your first read I encourage you to read them all!
I loved this book, thought Grace and Ruairi’s story lovely, really liked fiesty Grace she was so stubborn but so innocent. Some great characters and excellent storyline
I have enjoyed this series as Rebecca Ruger delivers. It is a story that is unfolding unexpectedly, medievally brutal yet gentle, historically harsh yet kind. I am loving this couple, and I need to read more of their story because my imagination screams, “I want the rest of their story!”
This was a good book. I have read a lot of your stories but I missed this one. I just think the story should have continued with their lives in a epilogue.
I enjoyed The Wolf of Carnoch Cross, but I hated the abrupt ending. I would have liked to know if they married, had children etc. So it lost a star for that.
It would have been 5 stars if not for the very ending. Or rather the lack of one more chapter. I would love to know what happened to her home and if the King granted them her keep.
