Is it possible to befriend a ghost? The dead teacher haunting Grendel Hall seems to think so. Ever since I was little, I've been shifting partway into the Ghost World each night, which meant ghosts were real to me. I could talk to them and touch them. It was terrifying! But I've grown tougher and learned to deal with it. Until I went off to college. Now, there's a ghost on campus that can kill living people, and only I can stop it. The problem is, I don't know if I can. But I've got to try because if I don't, Brent College will become a bloodbath!
Brad Younie writes books mostly about magic in the real world because he loves magic, and lives in the real world. Being an eternal teenager trapped in a man’s body, he owns a collection of swords, wands, and spends way too much time studying these things. A man with many hobbies, he plays guitar, reads books, watches movies, and fences with his swords. But most of all, he weaves tales of magic and mystery that chills to the bone as it makes the heart race.
Phantom Studies is the delightful first book of the Deathwalker series. Following the adventures of Lexi Downs, a freshman at university in Boston, this book introduces us to a wonderful cast of characters—both living and dead. Brad Younie excels at creating intriguing and memorable characters, and Lexi is no exception.
Lexi has an extraordinary gift—or curse—in that instead of simply seeing ghosts, each night she leaves the land of the living and slips partially into the ghost world. Her nights are filled with snapshots of the once living, from 80s telephones in the dorm’s hallway to the long-gone facades of the campus buildings, and ghosts that are surprised that she can see them and interact with them. In the ghost world, however, these ghosts pose problems that would never affect the living and Lexi can not only see them but touch them and be touched by them. Not all ghosts are friendly and some are downright dangerous.
When a ghost begins murdering people on campus in a way that no ghost should be able to do, Lexi takes it upon herself, along with her DnD group and other friends, to stop it. Along the way she is haunted by the reoccurring image of a spectral door which seems to signal something terrible is about to happen, begins falling for a boy with his own ghostly past, has to maneuver a police investigation and school bullies, all the while keeping up with her classwork!
This story was fun and exciting with twists and turns, charming characters, and ghosts that were both friendly and terrifying. I highly recommend it!!!
