Wedding Days at Halesmere House is a contemporary Romance Novel set in the beautiful setting of the Cumbrian and Lake District hills. The story follows Lizzie, who grew up in the area, staying with a friend after her parents lose their business and home then move to Scotland. Lizzie loves the area and her bestie and family live on the Grounds of Halesmere House, a beautiful stately type home with stunning scenery.
On her 18th birthday, Lizzie means Cal, a Northern Irish nomad who's on a mission to find out where he came from, but with an inability to stay in one place for long. The two fall instantly in love, but when it comes down to it, Lizzie has plans for university and Cal, he has other ideas. The pair part in heartbreak and Lizzie is now nearly 30, with her own business up and running in Cumbria and planning her best friend's wedding.
Lizzie's best friend wants to have her wedding back at Halesmere, where Lizzie has not returned in the 12 years since Cal and the ladies go on a weekend retreat to the venue to check it out and as a makeshift hen party. Lizzie only just arrives and comes face to face with Cal, after all this time. She's flung into a turmoil of emotions, heartbreak, healing and love as she learns to open up her closed heart and to love the place she grew up again once more.
So, for me this story was really engaging - I quickly fell into the plot and the author really had be feeling alongside Lizzie. The chemistry between her and Cal when they first meet is so apparent in the writing, you feel that tummy butterfly including excitement on her behalf. The build of the relationship and the fall, you are also there with her.
As the story unfolds also, there are many situations where I found myself so immersed, imagining the story. *I totally had Jamie Dornan in my head the whole time as Cal* 🤣 The other characters really support the story and Cal's search for his family has you rooting for him to find his happy ending also.
I would give this a 5* rating, however there's the classic old miscommunication trope which drives me insane and in the case of this book it's a massive character flaw of Lizzie, the main character. There's one scenario where I actually got angry at her and the fact that none of her friends actually told her to get a grip of herself annoyed me too. I know my friends would support me, but they will also tell me if I'm being a total idiot. There's tantrums, assumptions and jumping to conclusions etc and I am SO OVER IT.
Otherwise though, I loved the story and it's a fabulous read, please don't be put of by my lack of patience with topes! 🤣🤣
Highly recommend and I'll also be watching out for more from Suzanne as I really liked her writing.
What a lovely book! ‘Wedding days at Halesmere House’ is the second book in the Lake series, and although I haven’t read the first book, I definitely will! This book can be read as a stand alone. It is the story of Cal and Lizzie. Lizzie is a photographer and event planner. When her best friend Gemma decides on Halesmere House for her wedding venue, Lizzie knows she has to face some painful memories from when she lived there and got her heart broken by Cal. At Halesmere, she tries to block all the memories but is caught off guard when she suddenly bumps into… Cal! He now lives in Halesmere so at first she tries to avoid him but slowly faces their past and also her feelings. But she has trust and commitment issues which she has to overcome… I enjoyed reading this book a lot! It is beautifully written, the author clearly has a knack for writing and what I loved, is that she paints a beautiful picture of lovely Cumbria. While reading you imagine yourself being there, smell the air, hear the water streams, and feel the wind on your face. After reading this book you want to book a holiday there, to go hiking and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Cal is a free spirit, a gorgeous man but troubled by the fact that he didn’t know who his father was. Lizzie has commitment issues after their parents lost their business and their home, and she has convinced herself she needs to be successful in her career and always guard her heart from heartbreak. So when someone hurts her, she shuts him out. So she finds it very difficult to let people in. With Cal, I was surprised that they made up so quickly, and that she took responsibility for her part in what went wrong when they were young. I would have liked to see them talk more about it, and that topic being explored a bit more. But it was quickly solved. Okay, but when an issue arises later on, she cannot act the same way, and can’t get over it as quickly as before, which surprised me. You either have trouble looking in the mirror and accept you are partly to blame and learn from it and do better next time, or you don’t. So it was a bit puzzling to me; when you spotted a flaw in your character or actions, you either recognize it and deal with it, or you have no clue and make the same mistake over again. In this case it seemed Lizzie at first learned from the past but later on she made the same mistake over again. And kudos to the author for not writing graphic sex scenes! She let’s that over to your own imagination, which only adds to the story because the story focusses on THE STORY, which gives them more respect and depth and meaning and everything you want. Loved it! The secondary characters are lovely and as you want them to be! I won’t spoil too much about them but they’re great and fun. I loved the epilogue, I even wished there was a second epilogue to find out what happened next. This book is that good! A heartwarming, lovely feel good story in tranquil surroundings. I can highly recommend anyone buying and reading this book and I will definitely read more books by this author! I received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and I am grateful for this opportunity. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Events planner and maid-of-honour Lizzie Martin knows her best friend Gemma is making the right decision for her wedding. After the original venue catches fire, and a space opens up at Halesmere House, it makes complete sense to move the wedding to the Lake District artists’ residence. But Lizzie has painful memories of Halesmere…
When she bumps into Cal, her first love, she is forced to confront the past. Now a sought-after blacksmith, Cal has his own studio at Halesmere (based on Halecat House in Cumbria) and the two must find a way to get along if this wedding isn’t going to be a complete disaster.
It soon becomes apparent that their attraction hasn't waned, but can Lizzie put their shared past behind her and learn to trust the man who left her once before?
My Opinion
This is a lovely, light-hearted read that has been lovely to read over a nice relaxing weekend. I have read the first book in this series however I feel that it could be read as a standalone. An engaging read with a plot that really grabs you. I couldn't get enough of this book, I wish there was another few chapters so I had more time with these great characters.
This is just what I needed after a run of heavy crime novels - it was a lovely light-hearted, feel-good perfect romance.
I instantly fell in love with our main characters Lizzie and Cal. From the minute they met as young adults, it was clear that they were in love. After a misunderstanding - or mis-communication - which leads Cal to run off to New Zealand, Lizzie is left heartbroken and unable to truly let go.
Whilst organising her best friend's wedding, they return to their childhood home in the Lakes and after 12 years apart, Lizzie and Cal's pasts collide.
I was totally invested in this relationship and could see how much they were in love but things just kept getting in the way. I loved the way things worked as they slowly made it back to each other.
The writing style was easy to read and flowed beautifully. The side stories were nicely woven into the story and added some extra interest.
I had absolutely no idea (until now) that this is actually book 2 - it was totally readable as a standalone - but now I know that book 1 exists, I have to grab that and catch up on Max and Ella's story.
I can also definitely see there being a book 3 - maybe a look back at either Bea or Gemma's story?
Book Review: A Charming Romantic Comedy with Well-Developed Characters and a Captivating Story I recently had the pleasure of reading a charming romantic comedy that I found to be an absolute delight. The story was so engrossing that I read it all in one sitting, unable to put it down. Despite being part of a series, I was able to fully enjoy this book as a standalone without feeling like I missed anything, and in fact, it left me eager to read more from the series and the author. What I loved most about this book were the well-developed and quirky characters. Each one had their own distinct personality and I found myself wanting to get to know them better. The village setting was also a highlight for me, and I found myself wishing I could move there as soon as possible. This traditional romance novel provided the perfect escape from reality. The writing was strong, the pace was brisk, and the story flowed seamlessly. The relatable characters and their stories had me captivated throughout the book. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance novels. It's an easy and quick read that will leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling.
This is the story of Lizzie, a successful wedding planner, who is helping to plan her best friend’s wedding. But after both lockdown and now a fire at the current location, the wedding is moved to the last place she wants to return to, Halesmere House. As well as making all of her best friends wedding dreams come true, she must also face the painful memories of her past, including Cal. The boy she was once in love with and her biggest heartbreak.
Set in the beautiful backdrop of Cumbria, this is a stunning story in both location and story telling that leaves you really wanting more.
I loved every page of this book and really struggled to put it down. I loved Lizzie and the more we learnt of her story, the more I loved her. Cal was super hot and you could feel the chemistry coming off the pages and brought to life. I love a good wedding story, and this was no exception. I cannot wait to enjoy more stories written by Suzanne Snow in the future
When she was 18 Lizzie she met the love of her life Cal . He was working in the pub as the barman and their love was at first sight . He came to Cumbria to search for his father and he will leave so he can travel in few months . When he suddenly leaves her she is crushed . After 12 years her best friend Gemma is getting married and she wants her wedding party to be at Halesmere House where they both come from . As she is her friends wedding planner and bridesmaid she has to go back and do everything is okay . The only problem is that Cal is there and he is more beautiful than 12 years ago . Will dhe be able to forgive him and give them a second chance to love ? I received this book from netgalley and the publicer as an ARC . Thank you . All thoughts and opinions are my own .
A bit slow in the beginning. Honestly I had a hard time getting into history. But after a few pages, I was in.
I really like Lizzie. Her past is different from others books. She has commitments issues because of what happened to her parents (they lost their business). The fact that she wants to be successful and she protects her heart is sad. She protects herself because of what happened.
I’m a little but disappointed that the author didn’t explore much what happened in the past between Lizzie and Cal.
I love the passage where Cal gives her object back. I won’t say what it is. This scene is absolutely beautiful and well written.
Wedding Days at Halesmere House follows Lizzie an event planner. After Lizzie’s best Gemma’s wedding ceremony has been canceled twice already, once due to the lockdown and again due to a fire that takes place in their wedding venue Gemma gets the opportunity to have her wedding in House in Cumbria where they grew up. Even though Lizzie has painful memories with her ex in that very place Gemma suggest she wants to take her wedding Lizzie agrees for her best friend. Also as Gemma’s bridesmaids. Its been 12 years. Lizzie thinks that her feelings for Cal is far in her past but that was until she sees him again. Will Lizzie just ignore Cal or will she be able to forgive him for leaving her all those years ago, trust the man and give their love a second chance?
Having loved the first book in the love in the lakes series snowfall over halesmere house I was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint. This was a beautiful escapism read and had me hooked from the first page and read it in practically one sitting. Was lovely to be back in the lakes and back in the surrounding of halesmere house for the telling of Lizzie and cals story and getting to know more about the lives of the characters from the previous book.
This was a heartwarming read with fabulous characters and fabulous descriptions of the setting and the emotions in this book leapt out of the page.
I am already eagerly anticipating book three in this series.
This book y'all. Where do I even begin?! I loved this story. I loved that I get to post my review on Valentine's Day since this is a wonderful love story about Lizzy and Cal and how they met 12 years prior at Halesmere House and fell in love. Now they are back where it all started and Lizzy has to figure out how to unlock her heart and open it up and stop running. Y'all this book was amazing !! This was the perfect read for me for this time of year and I devoured it in only a few days !! I'm not going to say anymore because y'all need to go get this book asap or add it to your TBR !!! I truly hope we get more from Halesmere House!!!!
A lovely little romcom set in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside. This is book 2 in a series but can be read completely standalone as they both feature different characters. I love the quirky villagers such as Stan. I really liked the friendship of Lizzie, Bea, and Gemma, though I did want to shake Gemma a few times and say you are not helping things here!! I enjoyed the storyline about Cal's past and finding his family, I thought this was handled very sensitively. A really nice little read, perfect for a summer beach read I'd say!
This was a quick, easy and charming romcom read that I couldn't put down and read it in one sitting. Although this was part of a series, I read it as a standalone and I didn't feel hindered or that I missed anything, and, if anything, it has just made me want to read more of this series and more books by the author. For me the best part of this book was the characters, they were all so full of personality and quirks, and I wanted to get to know each and everyone of the, I want to move to this village asap, I loved it
When Lizzie's friend has complications with her wedding venues, she finds herself attending a hen weekend at Halesmere House, which holds bittersweet memories and heartbreak too. Wishing the very best for her friend she agrees to help plan the wedding there, but meets the man who broke her heart as a youngster. It was great to meet all the characters and learn all about them. They quickly feel like old friends. Their hen weekend, although not my cup of tea, sounded amazing. I loved the venue and look forward to more books in this series.
A sweet story that would make a cute movie. Fast-paced and fairly short which was nice. Loved the setting and the community.
The writing was a little over-the-top; feelings were over-explained or spelt out at times, and as much as I love a romance, there was a lot of cringey and unrealistic romantic dialogue.
The falling actions and resolutions were predictable and whilst I’m all for a happy ending, there were lots of things that happened ‘coincidentally’ that felt too good to be true.
I enjoyed this story about love getting a second chance. Overall a fun story with good characters. I found Lizzie irritating at first, blaming Cal when I think he behaved badly but understandably. But she grows during the book and that includes owning her actions as well. Reads fine as a standalone.
Full disclosure - I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this story about Lizzie and Cal who found each other twelve years ago and broke each others heart when Cal left suddenly. They went their separate ways and when Lizzie went on a retreat with her two best friends who did she see but Cal. She tried hard not to admit to her old feelings for him. I would recommend this book to anyone who lives romance and happy endings.
What a beautiful setting for a wedding, Halesmere House is the perfect location in the Lake District to celebrate your wedding day. Lizzie thought she had met the love of her life but Cal wanted to travel so he disappeared from her life twelve years ago. Imagine Lizzie’s surprise when she discovers Cal has a studio at Halesmere House! A story about families, secrets, friendships, second chances and love make this an exciting read.
I really enjoyed this story. Beautifully written with engaging characters and a little bit of a mystery thrown in; my attention was grabbed from page one and retained to the end. Lizzie and Cal were both fantastically well developed characters and I thought the other characters all played their part very well. Entertaining and emotionally satisfying, I definitely recommend this one.
Cute little story, slow paced, but unfortunately it’s not for me.
I didn’t realise when I bought this book that it’s written in third person and that’s just not for me. I’m also not a fan of characters speaking with an accent, it messes with my reading flow as I have to re read the sentences to figure out what’s being said.
Picked this up as an easy read but I just couldn’t get into it. Storyline was a bit basic and the sentence structure was getting on my nerves - I know you’re meant to mix up how you start a sentence but no one actually says “Bread and cheese followed a glass of wine” or “Hugs were enjoyed as they said hello” (these are not actual quotes but that’s how I remember them).
Lizzie finds herself back at Halesmere House to help friend Gemma plan her wedding. She thought her love for Cal was a thing of the past, until she sees him again. I did find the focus on events of the past a bit boring. Otherwise, a good read.
I felt this book should have been a novella there was so much description and “padding” that I skipped a lot of it ….. some bits felt rushed and other bits went on forever ….. I was looking forward to it but just not for me
This was a lovely, light read to curl up with on a Sunday afternoon! I hadn't read the first book in the series, but I don't think you need to, I enjoyed it and didn't feel like anything wasn't explained. Though I do want to go back and read book 1 on those days when you just want something cute and warm! You can read this in one sitting easily, the plot moves quickly but doesn't rush the characters' emotions in any way. I have visited the Lakes a few years ago, and this book really made me miss it and want to book our next trip! *runs to check a hotel website*
A good escapist story, heartwarming and entertaing. A second chance romance, lovely setting, and sweet characters I rooted for. Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
Loved this book finding old love 12 years after breaking up Cal and Lizzie finding each other again and lizzie helping Cal to search for his father this is the 2nd book in the series and I was so hooked can’t wait for another to find out how they all progress at Halesmere it’s an addictive read .
I really liked the setting for this book and the characters were good too. A nice follow-on to the first book in the series. I hope there will be more. Would suit fans of Sharon Booth and De-Ann Black.
A really enjoyable read. I was led to it because I live near a place called Haslemere. :) I have since read some of Suzannes books and really enjoyed them, This is easy to follow and melt into. A wonderful afternoon read to escape into a well written story.
