Thank you, n(ex)t.

After burst pipes destroy Esme’s city-centre flat, she temporarily relocates to a delightful and small cottage in a village on the edge of town. The change is a big one, but Esme soon settles in and, as the art gallery she co-owns with her business partner, David, continues to thrive, life is sweet.

Until Elliot - an ex whom she hasn’t seen or spoken to for years - moves in next door, along with his perfect new girlfriend, Morgan. Suddenly, Esme’s past is right on her doorstep, or at least just over the fence.

When Elliot and Esme decide to keep their former relationship a secret from those around them, their subterfuge sets off a chain of events which not only forces Esme to re-evaluate her past relationship with Elliot, but also puts her friendship with David under the microscope and under pressure.

A laugh-out-loud romance of second chances and near misses, perfect for fans of Mhairi McFarlane and Jenny Colgan.

Thank you Netgalley and publishers for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So this book was NOT what I was expecting. At first I was low key annoyed at the amount of back story and attention to building up the side characters when the female main character and her "ex" had only had two small interactions within the first 10 chapters...but OH MY GOD. It made so much sense around the 60% mark where we were hit with twists we did not anticipate! I thought this would be a safe trope-fest book but no, so much better.

Big fan of Esme as a character, and I really like Lloyd!

Devoured this book in about 4-5 hours. It takes a little while to warm up to and then you simply can't put it down. Platt is a new author to me, and i look forward to reading more from her!

Oof, I tried? I thought the next door aspect sounded really fun and was curious to see how the author would tell the story while not making the potentially cheating characters sound like a-holes. Well she didn't seem concerned about that. Also I was so bored. Gave up. Returned to it. Gave up again at halfway.

Esme comes home from work one day to find out that her ex and his new woman have moved in next door. This brings up memories and feelings, and soon Esme and Elliot are sneaking around behind his partner's back.

The MC grated on me. Knowing how she felt shortly before the break-up with Elliot and befriending the his new partner, why does she still meet him clandestinely?

Great secondary characters - perfect best friend and a neighbour who doles out advice unknowingly!!! Also short chapters!

Branded as "an utterly charming and funny romance," The Ex Next Door is a fun contemporary fiction that is great for fans of Sophie Kinsella or Mhairi McFarlane.

This book was so cute! I was immediately sucked into the book, thanks to Platt's enjoyable writing style and witty dialogue. The characters all came to life and jumped off the page. The romance was heart-warming, and with a HEA and no-steam, this is a very sweet love story that will appeal to many. (Plus, it's a fast, easy read for those of you looking for something quick to devour.)

Spoilers below:

At first, I wasn't loving this book. Though the writing style immediately gripped me, the romance was slowly losing my interest. There was barely any interaction with the "ex," whom I thought was the love interest for a good chunk of the book. As the story progressed, I began to hate the "ex" more and more, finding him to be the most insufferable, flattest love interest of all time. Turns out, I was looking in the wrong place because he was NOT the story's major love interest. When I say I gasped!!!! Platt played me successfully, and I totally should've seen it coming. I had theories, but I second-guessed myself for most of the book. Turns out, my favorite male character of the book is the love interest! Platt wrote the romance in such an interesting way, that I thought for sure Megan and David would end up together. However, when the MC began to realize her feelings for David, I squealed with joy. The seeds had been there all along and it made perfect sense. I absolutely LOVED the last 25% of the book--including the resolution. It was a such a fantastic "switcheroo," and turned the story into a beautiful "friends to lover" romance, rather than a "second chance" romance like I immediately thought. (I went in blind!).

I definitely recommend this one for those who want a cute, light, fun contemporary-romance read.

I reviewed an eARC of this book by netgalley in an exchange for an honest review.

To be honest I don’t know where to start. The book as a whole was okey but I thought that it didn’t follow the description. The mc was well developed but not really likeable and I didn’t find any chemistry between her and the apparent love interest. I also didn’t like the way that the love interest was introduced and didn’t like how confusing it was to actually know who the love interest is.
Overall the book was not bad but not exactly the best.

* Thankyou to Netgalley for this ARC!

"Perhaps we should go back inside?"
"And get creative, you mean?" I asked, turning to open the gate. He laughed.
"Well, that's what got us here, isn't it?" he said, taking my hand. "So why stop now?"

For a book with zero spice, this was such a good read!

This book had me chanting David, David, David the whole time because Elliot gave me the ick from day one.

All of the characters, though, were amazing. Standouts were: Cass & Llyod!

You will fine:
• Coworkers/friends to lovers
• Slow burn
• Amazing banter
• An easy read
• Fluff

My .5 off is because it took way too long for the FMC to get her shit together and tell the MMC how she felt. I knew from the beginning girl!

Pick this one up, you won't regret it.

It's a will they won't they between Esme and David. They belong together and it has taken them both some considerable time to notice and act on it. Elliot is well and truly the third wheel who does his best to get in the way. In the end he only puts them closer together. While Morgan is much more likeable than I was thinking she would. Not always perfect very real and fits with the story. You will not want to put it down.

Actual Rating: 3.5 stars

This was an enjoyable read- not a heap of action or plot, but I liked how well-drawn the supporting characters were. The miscommunication in this novel was pretty outrageous- so many assumptions made or misinterpretations- but overall it was quite wholesome and a really quick read.

A 3* for me, it was enjoyable but I wish we could had got more from it.

I loved the last 25% of the book, when she started to realise it was David all along. But I was so sad that we basically got one chapter of them and that was it. I wanted more, I wasted to see how they loved each other.

I also wished she’s realised her ex was a piece of shit earlier because that wound me up slightly 😂😂

One of Platts weaker ones. I still read it in one go. When a story only works because of characters misunderstanding each other, it’s not a very good story.

Spoiler ahead

Spoiler: most of the storyline goes in one direction, surprised the MC takes so long to get what’s wrong when my alarm bells rang from the very beginning, good thing I didn’t give up on the book before the end because I would have remained with a sense of a very disappointing MC, story and author (who I normally really like). Bit of a Bridget Jones story line and unexpected triangle.

I wanna give like 3.8 because it was a good book but predictable ygm- not that that’s a bad thing

I also was picturing David as Dave Rossi from criminal minds so I’m not sure what that says about me.

thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review

i’m giving this one 3.5 stars.

the title, cover, and blurb on netgalley all sounded interesting to me and i was happy to see that i was approved for an arc of this book.

the first half of the book was very elliot heavy and every time we learned more about him, all i saw were red flags. but i think it’s a common thing to paint our first love in a rosier light than they probably deserve, right? i loved cass as a side character! i feel like we would be besties if she were real. i didn’t feel like i was able to connect with Esme, but that might be a me issue

was this the best book i’ve ever read? no, but it was interesting enough and a quick read.

Quick Summary: A seeing is believing romance...with an unexpected twist

My Review: The Ex Next Door by Jo Platt was a subtle nod to a topsy turvy romance. This Women's Fiction book was so different than I expected. The love story that was really happening didn't become evident until it was right in my face.

Initial Reaction: I was glued to my seat for this one. The more I kept reading, the more I needed to know what was truly going on. I dare say, the author kept me guessing during the majority of the book.

About the Characters: The characters in this book were incredibly diverse and very colorful. Some of them were quirky and cute, while others came across as annoyingly toadish. While reading, there were multiple times when I came to realize that the most wonderful characters (who had fooled me into believing their innate goodness) were just downright not so, and the most peculiar characters (who I was getting weirdo vibes from) were the most charming.

What I Loved: There were many things to love about this book.

One of the things that captured my attention about this lovely book was the book title and the book cover. (I'm counting them as one, of course.) The title snagged my interest simply because of what it implies. I was immediately considering all sorts of romantic formulas based on the "perfect title." The cover seemed so playful and fun; it was lighthearted, even. I just knew, based on the cover, that this book would be special.

The direction the story took was another thing I loved. I would never have guessed what was going on if I hadn't seen it (read it) for myself. (Good one, Ms. Platt. Score!) The surprise that shall not be mentioned - the unexpected twist - was both brilliant and sweet.

Finally, the third thing I genuinely adored was the friend brigade surrounding Esme. Her supports were decent and good people. I really liked how they rallied around her when she needed "a shoulder to cry on."

About the Conclusion: At the end of the day, this story was about life, love, relationships, growth, and finding personal truths. Esme learned who she really was and discovered what she really wanted. Elliot showed his true colors. David became brave. And still, there was more.

My Takeaways: There were a number of takeaways, in my opinion.

1) Trust your instincts.
2) Be true to yourself.
3) See with your heart versus with your eyes. (When it comes to relationships, we can often fool ourselves into seeing what we want to see when we focus on the superficial.)
4) Appreciate the beautiful things right in front of you.

My Final Say: This is a worthy read that will have you thinking about the upside down, wonderfully challenging nature of love. Readers who enjoy a comeback story from someone who has suffered a heartbreak will undoubtedly like this book. It reads like a Women's Fiction book, in the best way.

Rating: 4/5

Status: Clean
Level: Slow burn, low chemistry, high compatibility

Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher, and to NetGalley, who provided access to this title in exchange for an honest review. The words I have shared are my own and were in no way influenced by the aforementioned. I voluntarily offered my submission.

I loved this book and found it a delightful Valentine's month escape that blends heartwarming romance with the comedic chaos of working life. Esme, the co-owner of an art gallery, finds her peaceful countryside retreat (which she didn't really want to be in, given she's only there because her city centre flat was wrecked by burst pipes) disrupted by an unwelcome blast from the past – her ex-boyfriend Elliot moves in next door with his new girlfriend, Morgan.

Esme's narration is a breath of fresh air whilst also being rich in detail, creating a vivid picture of Esme's working life and her neighbours at the gallery, some quirky characters. From the ever-supportive salon owner Cass to the butcher Lloyd with a penchant for gossip, the supporting cast adds a layer of humour and warmth to the story.

The initial premise – exes living side-by-side – is a classic setup, but Platt skilfully avoids cliché. This I think is due to the wealth of detail and Esme's determination to keep the past buried, especially for Morgan's sake, creates a tension that is amusing at times, but studded with a bit of doubt about Elliot's real intentions. As Esme and Elliot navigate their new normal, the reader can't help but wonder if the spark is truly extinguished.

Meanwhile, a cloud hangs over Esme's relationship with her business partner, David. The author masterfully builds a slow-burn romance here, leaving the reader yearning for more as Esme grapples with her feelings. The story takes a satisfying turn when Elliot's web of lies unravels and skilfully exposes his manipulative behaviour, making us appreciate Esme's initial heartbreak as a stroke of good luck. She'd never really had answers from him, and now she realised she didn't need them. He was just a rotter!

Esme's narration is rich and detailed, giving us access to her internal thoughts, how she mulls over problems and issues and reminds me of the detail in Jane Austen's writing, or how I imagine she would have written in the 21st century. I so welcome this type of writing and detail.

I think this is a perfect summer read. It's a light and humorous escape that celebrates second chances, honest friendships, and the power of a good working community. While the plot may not break new ground, I liked the characters and dialogue and this made it a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

When art gallery co-owner Esme relocates to a quaint cottage on the edge of town after a nasty situation of burst pipes at her flat, all seems well. Until her ex, Elliot - who she hasn't seen for four years - moves in next door with his new girlfriend, Morgan. As she navigates through this awkward situation, while also keeping her former relationship a secret from virtually everyone (especially Morgan), Esme is forced to figure out what this new dynamic with Elliot looks like while also evaluating her friendship with her gallery's other owner, David.

The Ex Next Door is a contemporary romance ... with a twist. This book was not what I was expecting. I expected a second-chance romance from the title, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the route the author chose to take!

The prologue regarding how Esme and Elliot broke up made me feel sympathetic for the main character, since insecurities and rash decisions stemming from them are relatable and understandable. As the story went on, I initially struggled to get through this book. Esme came across as relatable, yes, but also somewhat of an unlikable character at times. I enjoyed her interactions with the side characters (I loved Lloyd, I laughed at the theories about Douglas), but her interactions with Elliot lacked any true appeal. I progressively disliked Elliot's character due to his pattern of lying to his current girlfriend while continually apologizing to Esme for it, and it was hard for me to root for them as a couple.

Turns out, I was wrong for assuming he was the main love interest! I was appreciative of the fact that Esme and Elliot were not endgame, and I liked who the love interest ended up being. However, I think in her attempt to create a twist, I didn't really feel like there was a progressive build-up of chemistry between Esme and David, and so their romance fell a little flat. I think I would have appreciated a more progressive shift in their dynamic.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review!

I totally loved this book! There was romance, humour, sadness, even a bit suspense! I really enjoyed it. Well written and easy to engage with the characters!

Be aware SPOILERS ahead!!!

What in the heck is Elliot trying to do? This is my thought through most of the book.
Ugh! I feel like shaking him! And shaking Esme too. They are driving me crazy!

And also… about 46% of the book… was anybody else freaking out??? Have I been watching/reading too much suspense??

I mean!

‘Can you tell me a little bit about that one?’ David pointed to the contorted, sleeping figure in Douglas’s hands. ‘Does it have a title?’ ‘It’s Father,’ Douglas replied, now smiling broadly, delighted by David’s interest and ongoing approval. ‘And he’s dead, by the way, Esme,’ he added softly. I looked up at him. ‘Who’s dead?’ ‘Father. You thought he was sleeping, but he’s dead.’ ‘Oh…’

Full body chills!!! Hands down one of the best parts of the book!

Also, coming back to the main story! Elliot is such an asshole! Esme and Elliot’s “friendship” is doing to Morgan exactly what Esme felt four years ago! Ugh!

‘I feel so far from fundamentally good right now,’ -Esme

This situation is just killing Esme inside!

When Esme and Elliot’s relationship has gone a bit to far and David witness the whole thing! I believe that is part of what helps Esme see Elliot for who he truly is. And Wow! I just am so happy on how Esme trusts herself and how she ends up managing her situation with Elliot!

Further more, Esme realizes she actually has growing feelings for David, but there seems to be bad timing until Esme finally confronts her feelings!

I totally loved this book!

I really thought this book would be a 4 or 5 star review for me because I found the plot and writing engaging and interesting.

Unfortunately the reason I knocked two stars off were for the following reasons:
1. There is an emotional cheating trope which is not my cup of tea. I will give Jo Platt credit that her writing was so good that I did want to find out what happens next. This trope was unexpected when reading the blurb and first chapter of the book. As Esme breaks up with Elliott because she thought he was cheating on her but then engages in an emotional affair with him when he has a new girlfriend? It felt very hypocritical and did not seem in character for Esme.
2. Esme is extremely judgemental at time, I will forgive her judging Jasmine as she wasn't a nice person to Esme but I can't forgive her being judgy of Lloyd describing his meat as art when he is a butcher and thinking Douglas must be a murderer because he can produce dark art pieces for gallery based on depression and sadness and not just the usual animals he makes. Like love you want to sell it yet judge him for making it. In addition, she is so judgy of Morgan who has done no offence to her except get botox and date her ex partner when they have been broken up for three years at this point and she doesn't even know they dated.
3. The ending I liked but it was rushed and we should have seen more instances that led up to that ending rather than just in the last 30% of the book.

Overall this book is good for a one time read but since there is an emotional affair I am do not see me rereading it.

2.5 stars - I didn’t connect to any of the characters and i had to force myself to continue reading if I’m honest. Definitely not a book to read if you’re trying to get out of a reading slump…

Okay so you have Elliot and Esme who have dated for 3 years but split due to Esme thinking hes messing around with a colleague (and hes gaslighting her. I think he gaslit me too because i thought she was just being insecure and jealous by the way the plot was written)

Esme ends up next door to Elliot and his new girlfriend Morgan, 4 years later, and Esme has started a gallery business with a friend called David and everyone thinks they’re dating.

What i couldn’t understand, and thought was a bit stupid, was the love square.

So..

Elliot likes Morgan and Esme (and starts to have a secret affair with Es behind M’s back)

Esme likes Elliot and David

David likes Morgan, Esme, Jasmine and Soph

Morgan likes David and Elliot

Just everyone likes everyone, and even if they don’t its just constant flirting and miscommunication. The ending was a bit meh. Esme tells David that she likes him (in a very professional tone as if shes telling him they have a new client or important business info) and then David responds in a very monotone professional way too. Then they make out. I mean there was no build up and it happened in the last 5 pages. Also, you don’t tell someone you like them as if you’re in the middle of a business conference.

There was no romance, just a massive love square and nothing really happened.

The Ex Next Door by Jo Platt

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Canelo and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

My Opinion

I didn't like this book for the first few chapters, but it slowly drew me in. This is for fans of light-hearted contemporary romance. I enjoyed Platt's previous book, 'Working It Out' so I went into this book knowing what I expected from Platt's writing style.

I enjoyed reading this. I found that I was eager for the book to end - not because I wasn't enjoying it but because I needed to know how it all ended. A great read that I'd recommend for fans of Jo Platt.

Special thanks to NetGalley and publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for a honest review!

There are two things I want to write about that brought my rating from a 4 to a 3. But first, I want to talk about the things I loved.

I really enjoyed the side characters and their subplots. I thought that each character was hilarious in their own way and I was interested in their little lives. I also enjoyed the resolution of the story, along with seeing Esme's personal growth. It was very satisfying to read her understanding her revelations. That being said, there are some things that made my review waver.

1. I was so confused about Esme's crush on David. I did not see it coming and honestly thought that I missed reading a few chapters about their relationship. I don't think there were enough scenes to show that David was even an option for a crush, or to see their dynamic. The first half of the book was really Elliot heavy, and I thought the author wanted that to happen.

2. I thought the characters were extremely dull. Other than a description that both Elliot and David were attractive, I didn't read anything else about their character that wasn't spoken. I felt the same way about Esme at some points, but her banter with other characters saved that narrative.

Overall, this was a cute read, but it took a while to get through due to my confusion and lackluster characters. I think the second half of the book was the best, so if you are willing to push through, I would still recommend.

Folks, this is the one you've been waiting for a 'Rom-Com' meets 'Heavenly Magic' scenario!!!
It's not quite the hot guy next door but it's the ex next door trying to still think he's somehow relevant.
It begins with Esme and a broken pipe which leads to an entirley new situation that's all encompassing. David is her biz partner but also a possible 'motivator' personally and professionally. What seems innocently enough in terms of a 2nd location to expand upon their already lively biz turns into a possible test of their relationship status as professionals as well as friends.
Will Elliot move on or will he be stuck lamenting in the past?
Is it wise to simply keep the past relationship between Esme and Elliot in the past or should the new friendships surrounding their inner circle be made aware.
I love the wheelin' and dealin' going on here. The commoderie is quite entertaining.
It's quite the treat to read especially having an ex-spouse in my real life named 'David' however, I tried not to let that thought overtake this book.
Second chances, near misses, or bulls-eyes is up for debate in this newly crafted piece made out of love.
Thank you to Jo Platt, Canelo, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.

WELL

the cover, title and the blurb pulled me in and i thought it was going to be straightforward—ex moves in next door, rekindle relationship, HEA—but no, we were smacked with a plot twist, which i find it sudden and hard to connect with.

it was also confusing because until the 80% mark, i had no idea who esme's HEA was, until it was vaguely spelt out for us.

throughout this book, esme's attitude flips like a freaking pancake and her actions with elliot appalled me. because she was doing what she didn’t want happen to her 4 years ago. to morgan.

and then her sudden realisation one day confused me further. like HOW can you tell me that she’s had feelings all these while? like there was no indication whatsoever except for that they were terrifyingly in tune—which i found it super adorable.

i felt the storyline could have been developed better.

despite all these, i have to say that the writing style gripped me—all narrative, no POVs, easy for me to read in one setting without being tired or restless or needing a break.

overall: 3.5⭐️
