I received an ARC and I’m leaving an honest review.
You know that meme of the cat screaming in agony, with tears in its eyes? Yeah... that's me right now. I feel like I just said goodbye to my own children.
I love this duology so damn much and this was such a perfect conclusion to the story. Iori and Ellen, Alexander and Kyani, the pining, the STRESS of everything falling apart.... It was amazing.
Even though this rating is for an earlier, pre-published version of this book, I'm so incredibly eager to get a paperback copy to complete this duology. I didn't think it was possible to fall more in love with this chaotic crew of characters (plus some others!) until I reached the end. This was such a wonderful conclusion to a series I never knew I needed, and I wish I could experience the excitement of reading my way through this world for the first time all over again.
For those who absolutely loved BLOODY SPADE, you definitely won't be disappointed with BLEEDING HEART.
The duology I lovingly describe as “cosmic horror rwby” has a come to a close and wrapped up better than I could’ve hoped considering the state everyone was in earlier. Like the first book, it’s an evident labor of love from the author, and I hope anyone who picks it up enjoys it as much as I did
Will your heart bleed while reading this? Possibly. Your eyes will definitely water. Maybe a lot. Tears of sadness, tears of joy, it's a whole spectrum of emotions here. Seriously though, if you haven't read these books already, they are definitely worth your time. 💜❤️ They're both 5-star reads for me, but with Bleeding Heart, I especially loved how well the author tied everything together and further developed the characters' arcs and relationships. Even the antagonists are compelling (I particularly enjoyed Circ). The magic system is super neat and described with beautiful details, the writing is clear and immersive, the angst and joy will wreck you and then piece you back together even better than before. I don't know if that even makes sense but seriously please just read this series, it's so good!
If you loved the first book, you will love the continuation, too. We get to see much more of all the characters and the relations between them have time to develop.
It's a character-driven story with not a lot of action until the second half, which is fine by me (but something to keep in mind so you pick it up when you're in the right mood!). There's so much of the characters' bickering and just being together which I enjoyed a lot.
I loved all the queerness and sooooo many aspec characters 💜
Just like with the first book, I'd definitely say it would make an amazing anime. The author promises anime vibes and definitely delivers on that front.
Overall, a fun, queer book filled with loveable characters.
It's almost a year since I was so lucky to read and review the first book of this wonderful duology by Brittany M. Willows!
And now, I am here (one day before its pub day!) with Bleeding Heart and my girl Ellen in all her glory.
While I have to say Bloody Spade was more of my cup of tea, there's really nothing unenjoyable about the second book. The characters are still the strongest point and I just couldn't help but love all four of the MCs as they navigated all the high stakes situations and the 'quiet before the storm' fist half of the book. And of course the aftermatch of the final battle. All five acts had something to add to the story and were enjoyable to read, especially the first two as they gave the story many opportunities to explore the individual characters and their relationships. What especially made me happy was how the book focused on the aspec identities, it was so great to see <3
While reviewing BS, I mentioned there that Iori's my favourite character, but oh no, he was dethroned by none other than Alexander Jane himself! I love him and just want to put him into a microwave and watchim him spin around.
The action was great too and I loved how each character had a distinct style of fighting that allowed the scenes to be really creative. This goes for the side characters too.
To expand this review, I decided to also add my thoughts from when I finished Act I and Act II:
Act I was significantly slower than the last part of the previous book (which to be fair was a whirlwind of action and feelings), but it was definitely great to get a closer look at the emotions Iori and Ellen feel. It's the mutual pining that did it for me and the thinking that their romantic feelings are one sided and that a confession would make everything worse. They are both facing their inner problems - Iori with his past and Ellen with the knowledge that she has the Heart's Suit - and the unknow reality of what's going to happen. Also the growing bond between Alexander and Kyani feels so sweet and I'm just really glad my demi queen got better after the purifying process, she deserves a nice life. It's also interesting to see how Alexander and Iori interact adter everything that happened in the first book. Despite the lack of action, there's a feeling of something brewing, something bad for the characters, and the buildup is really good.
Act II went still slower than I would have liked, but at the same time it was so blissfully domenstic it made me forget that there are still the bad guys plotting their plans. I absolutely loved how the story focused more on Alexander and Kyani's relationship, iz was wonderful. Honestly I want to put Alexander into a microwave and watch him turn around (and I mean this in the most loving way possible). And therapy! Let's do some healing before everything goes to shit! And the lst chapters of this act were so good. The way Iori finally kissed Ellen just to run away made me want to grip his shoulders and yell at him. Stop pining and get to the fluff! But then Circ of course had to appear and ruin everything, oh how that was written along with the song, fantastic.
I am really thankful to be able to review this arc, thanks to the author for gifting me one!

this book brought lot of unexpected smiles to my face. it was incredibly pleasant watching the relationships between the characters develop from the last book in the ways that they did. this is the first book in while that i genuinely and unequivocally recommend.
seeing that this book had characters like me who were aromantic and queer was what enticed me to start this series, and then later discovering that they were written with so much care and attention brought me moments of genuine elation.
the plot was also extremely well-written, at least for my tastes. while reading, i felt like it was well-paced and not overworked or underwhelming. there were a lot of moments, especially in the climax of this book, that i could picture the scene like it was a movie playing in my mind (maybe that’s a common experience for most, but i have almost complete aphantasia so mental pictures are nearly impossible for me to form usually). i think it definetly shows that the author is also an artist, which i mean in the most positive of ways.
this series has been truly fun to read, and i hope that anyone else who decides to pick it up gets the same joy out of it as i have.
Bleeding Heart is a YA Urban/Contemporary Fantasy novel book 2 in this duology.
Wow, what can I say without spoiling what goes down in either books? Things very much begin to happen during this book, all while Iori is figuring out when to tell Ellen his feelings for her while she is even wondering if she is really in love and if Iori even likes someone like her. Not to mention Alexander and Kyani are growing closer while Circ is just raising all sorts of chaos for Cardplay to deal with. The story was suspenseful, exciting, and romantic. The characters will be figuring out new reawakening of their suits and wonder what Circ's and Wiseman's new moves will be, before it's too late. I love this duology and these characters, especially imaging a lot of these scenes as if it was really an anime. I can't wait to read more work from this author.
BLEEDING HEART is a masterpiece of a sequel. These action packed pages bring new adventure, peril, heartbreak, and catharsis to the beloved characters introduced in BLOODY SPADE, and each heart-pounding scene had me on the edge of my seat. With a perfect blend of gut-wrenching intensity balanced with softness, humor, and heart, this book is a beautiful conclusion to the Cardplay Duology.
If "Bloody Spade" made sure to introduce us to the wonderful Cardplay Duology in an unforgettable way, "Bleeding Heart" turns its finale into an epic celebration of fantasy. Iori, Ellen, Alexander, and Kyani have already been through a lot, but Blackjack isn't going to let them off the hook easy—particularly now that there's an ancient and powerful entity on their side. A villainous man now rules the city with an iron fist, and things have never looked this bad for the Empowered. Four Suits were created to keep the balance, and all four must Awaken if the world's to fend off Circ's malevolence. Only one of them is left, and now that they know who the Keeper of the Heart is, Cardplay must make a move before Blackjack gets a check-mate.
There are many things that stand out to me in this series, but I must, first and foremost, remark how absolutely lovely and heartfelt the characters are. Character building is what makes or breaks a book for me, and in this case, I couldn't get enough of Ellen and Iori in particular. Ellen's soft, kind heart was a tricky thing to attempt, in the sense that the fine line between compassionate and Mary Sue is thin and treacherous, but Willows manages to create a remarkable female main character whose strength lies in the softness of her soul. On the other hand, Iori grows throughout the duology so much that, by the end of it, I felt like I was watching my own child graduate.
Despite how bright Iori and Ellen shine, the rest of the cast holds up remarkably well too. Alexander and Kyani made me feel all warm more than once—Alexander, in particular, showed a lot of maturity and vulnerability that I wasn't expecting to find in such a buff, tough character—, and I can't stress enough how loving and excellent the aroallo rep was in this book. It's one of my first times ever seeing an aro MC in a book that's not dehumanised, or made to be a loner or some sort of irremediably traumatised and broken person, and it was incredible.
In terms of plot and action, this book packs more than a punch or two. I only released that breath I didn't know I was holding when I reached the epilogue! Although a lot of stuff was happening, it wasn't hard to follow, and I found myself utterly enthralled by the world and the story. So much so, that I made up fake migraines to stay in the car and keep reading while my fam went to Costco (and no, I'm not making this up). The conclusion to the story tied all loose ends neatly, and did not disappoint.
Overall I can absolutely feel this Duology becoming a comfort series for me that I'm sure to come back to more than once in the future! Can't wait for more stories by Willows!
With vivid imagery, a strong cast of characters, and anime-inspired, magical transformations, Brittany M. Willows weaves an unforgettable web of magic and mayhem in Bleeding Heart, a captivating, awe-inspiring, and haunting conclusion to the Cardplay duology.
The chaotic, power-hungry organization known as Blackjack may have been dismantled at the end of Bloody Spade, but a threat still looms on the horizon in Circ, the Sundered Star, a celestial entity consumed by Void and fueled by rage, intent on forging a new world order with the help of the Wiseman Corporation – a dangerous adversary in the fight for magical rights, not only responsible for the suppression technology currently in place in Hildegrand, but also numerous counts of human rights violations and trauma, experienced firsthand by the main cast of characters: Iori Ryone, Keeper of the Spade; Kyani Oto, Keeper of the Club; and, Alexander Jane, Keeper of the Diamond. Sought after for their latent, fated magic, the Suits are necessary for the Sundered Star’s conquest, a bridge holding back the flow of magic, which makes the Keeper of the Heart, Ellen Amelia Jane, a necessary piece of the puzzle.
When bad news regarding the two-timing Charles Wiseman threatens to break Cardplay, the little things shine bright, weaving an intricate web of ups and downs. Foreshadowing and snippets of past trauma are temporarily forgotten in the wake of friendship and found family – in the teasing banter of Alexander and Iori, former enemies, turned reluctant allies; in the cooking of pancakes to whisk the nightmares away; in card games and drinks at a housewarming party; in coffee shop visits, chai lattes, hot chocolates, and impromptu hangouts to discuss feelings; in good food and games, festivals and first kisses.
Although a part of me longed to stay in the novel’s slow, character-driven early chapters, brimming with heart and cozy vibes (a sentiment shared with Ellen), Willows picks up the pace at just the right time, circling back to the haunting, destructive nature of fate, a thing that can shift in the blink of an eye – and shift it does, as the Sundered Star’s blight takes an unexpected, deadly turn. A touch of cosmic horror surfaces then, bringing with it a cyclone of starlight and eyeballs as ink paints the streets of Hildegrand, resulting in a number of gruesome, heart-wrenching twists and turns.
Beneath the anime-inspired magic system lies an enchanting mythology founded on stars and ink. Swayed by jealousy and darkness, emotions explode, unfurling into a devastating magical conflict when Circ, the Sundered Star, chooses vengeance, hoping to enact a new world order by awakening the final Suit of magic: the Heart. With four Suits fully realized, magic will be returned to the world for good, giving Circ something to feed off of in his quest for power, made possible by the Wiseman Corporation’s centuries’ long quest for restoration, seen in the manipulation and suppression of magic for their own gain, first, through Blackjack, and later, through the sheer power of the Void.
Full of incredible world-building (some of which helps to answer questions raised in Bloody Spade, especially where mythology is concerned), Bleeding Heart is all-consuming. It’s a love letter to music, magic, and found family that marches to the beat of second chances. Delving into the complex nature of fate, Willows pens a conclusion that is haunting and heroic. Vivid, world-rending battles fit in seamlessly with important life lessons on trauma, recovery, and self-care, resulting in a climactic novel that is equal parts wholesome and engaging. It’s a reminder that fate can be changed, and that even the darkest moments are full of light.
Many thanks to the author, for providing an early copy of Bleeding Heart in exchange for an honest review!
After reading – and loving – “Bloody Spade” that came out in 2021, I was excited for the upcoming sequel, and was lucky enough to get to read it early. “Bleeding Heart” was just what a duology concluding book ought to be – all threads of the story coming together for a satisfying finish.
The story picks up exactly where it left off in the last book, and we find our main characters grappling with how recent events have changed them, individually and as a collective, as well as starting to plan for the inevitable showdown that will effectively decide the fate of the world as they know it – you know, just the things one goes through in their twenties.
Due to the things characters go through (especially Iori, Alexander, and Kyani), the book deals with difficult topics, like trauma, and in my very limited experience does so pretty well. Despite the more serious conversations and scenes, the story shines with hope and well-timed humour, making the book a balanced experience.
The only thing that kept me from a full-fledged-5-out-of-5-star enjoyment was perhaps just a me thing that frequently happens with sequels – it felt like we were spending a lot of time on fleshing out characters that we already knew and including only glimpses of those that were new, making a large chunk of the book feel like extra content from the last book and then things quickly advanced into the final battle sequence and a wrap up of the story (which I did enjoy a lot and really appreciated certain choices of where and how the characters were left – it made for a satisfying and not too much of a fairy tale ending). I do think that at some point I’ll reread these two books back to back and then it is quite possible that I will change my mind about it. All in all, it did not take too much enjoyment from me reading this book.
“Bleeding Heart” was a lovely conclusion to the Cardplay Duology and while I will be missing these idiots I grew to love, I will definitely be looking forward to what the author writes next! I received an arc of this book from the author (thank you!!), and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I thought "Bloody Spade" was great. "Bleeding Heart" is better. If this trend continues, I'm gonna buy everything B. M. Willows is writing.
It has everything I love; interesting wold-building, complex and likeable (and not so likeable) characters, funny banter, queer people allowed to be themselves without fear, action, magic... the best I can describe this is 'anime in book form'. No, I don't mean manga.
The book follows Iori, Ellen, Alexander and Kyani - the Keepers of a Suit each - as they recover from a battle with Wiseman and his henchmen and a literal deity with an army of ink monsters. As if that's not enough, they also battle their own feelings and struggles that normal teenagers face, such as crushes and anxiety. All sprinkled with a healthy dose of humor, festivities and dating advices.
The prose is good. Sometimes scenes rush by a little too fast, but that may just be my taste. As someone who does not speak English as a native language, I found some words confusing and had to look them up. Bright side is that I now have learned a few new words. Another thing that was great for me was that distance was measured in metric. Absolutely wonderful to not have to pause even more to look up how much X feet is, again.
A lovely little detail was the dividers in chapters when the POV was shifted. It wasn't until about halfway through I noticed they were images of the card suits (spade, heart, club and diamond) each shifting the POV to that Keeper.
There was pretty much only one thing I did not like, and that was a trope that I'm rather tired of: A 'bad guy' helping the heroes out in a critical moment and thereby redeeming themself (if only a bit) and then dying. I don't like that trope, but it's not enough for me to reduce a star.
I had the privilege of receiving an e-arc of this book, and am I ever grateful. This story made me feel all of the feelings! My heart would be breaking one moment and erupting with warmth and joy in another, and these transitions were seamless.
* spoilers ahead *
We got to revisit our main characters and see how they put the work in to grow as individuals and as a team. Bleeding Heart did such an amazing job navigating the intricacies of doing some terrible things in the name of what a character believes and putting in the work to redeem themselves, especially for characters like Alexander and Kyani.
It was also extremely heartwarming to see the amount of care that was given regarding love and intimacy and the relationships that form between certain main characters - where they openly communicate what they want and how they want these relationships to grow. My heart exploded, I felt so happy and safe within these pages.
That being said, the plot had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Bleeding Heart does an amazing job on raising the stakes and making you want to keep reading from page 1.
If you take a fraction of my love for this book, know that "a fraction of infinity is still infinity."
* end of spoilers *
In conclusion, this is an amazing story. I will be recommending it to everyone I know. This series is a warm blanket comfort read that I will come back to time and time again.

Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this too! I'm so happy I found these books and now I'm so sad they're over but I'm also happy because I loved the second installment and it was nice to follow these characters to the conclusion of the story.
We find the world in quite an upheaval after the events of the first book - our heroes are assembled, but there's a looming danger of something big, something world-turning. My wish from the first book, to know more about events that unfolded long before with the Stars and how magic worked back then, was fulfilled! Lore galore! I wanted even more, but it was enough here, to understand the context. It's hard to write this review without spoilers, but let me tell you, all our faves were in for quite a challenge, emotionally and physically as well. But I especially loved the way side characters managed to get a bit more "screentime" this time: it was needed and very much appreciated. A good first half of the book felt like preparing for the conclusion, with slowly rising tension, but when it exploded, boy, it did explode. And then there's a big old extended "final battle" at the end which was awesome and exciting, and heartbreaking and satisfying.
I loved Ellen and Iori, again and still...how their relationship and trust in each other evolved (and there were serious wrenches thrown into that process, involving one of my favourite tropes), and I loved Alexander and Kyani too, even more than in the first book. These four turned into such a team that it was a joy to watch. And every positive thing I wrote about the first novel, the writing, the imagery, the action, still counts for this one. I had loads of fun, and the pages zoomed by before my eyes. And at the end, things settled and I could say goodbye to the characters pleased with the direction their lives went and you know...it's finished, but there's the promise of a continuation if nowhere else, then my imagination.
My thanks go out to the author for the ARC and the experience. Needless to say, I'll read whatever new book she throws my way in the future!
I felt so lucky receive an ARC of this book. I loved the first instalment of the duology and couldn't wait to see how the characters' stories wrapped up and they better get the happy ending they deserve! (I'm not gonna tell you! ;) )
Bleeding Heart picks right up from Bloody Spade and is filled with catboy angst and teen drama set against the backdrop of the world being in mortal peril. I really loved the magic system in this world, with all the weapon types and it really did give me anime vibes. I just found the pacing a bit slow during the middle, but perhaps I am impatient? -Probably-
One thing that I found refreshing were the way romantic relationships were explored in this, it's written in a very understanding manner and explores other sexualities that aren't usually represented in stories. Iori was the star of the show in book 1 but this felt very much like Ellen's story and I loved her character development and Kyani's too. Overall, it was a cute and fun story!
If you loved book one, you will devour the epic conclusion to the Cardplay Duology. It has more of all of your favorite characters (cough cough: Ellen & Iori). It has the full set of card suits united to face the void and inkblots! It has more heart than you can handle, every character, not just Ellen.
Magic: 4/5
A culmination of the assembly of the card suits, Bleeding Heart brings back the full cast to face down their demons. The human ones gone rogue, as well as the magical entities in the extreme. With lots of turns and plenty of scenes to rip your heart out, this book really brings the big bang for the finale.
Overall: 4/5
I don’t know how many times I can say that this book has heart! It’s a theme, its very present imagery, its character arcs. Please enjoy!
I was given an ARC of Bleeding Heart in exchange for an honest review.
This duology has my entire heart. I'm so emotional about finishing it, and I'm going to buy book two as soon as it hits the shelves next month. If you're like me, and Ellen was your favorite character in Bloody Spade, this book will be a treat. Ellen's development really shines in Bleeding Heart, and the relationship between Ellen and Iori, MY EMOTIONS.
This series is so queer in a very normalized way, full of magic and heart and beautiful dynamics between characters. I need both books so I can reread them regularly, and I need to autoread everything that Willows puts out.
My heart can't take it. The ending, the fights, the banter, just put Alex and Iori in a room and film them destroying each other with words... till Alex finds a chair, of course.
Ellen, my darling, I want to bottle you up and sell your pure heart, but I could never bring myself to do that. You and Kyani are too good for this world.
I put off reading this because I was so scared of how it would end. Who would die and who would get there happy ending. Brittany ripped out my heart numerous times and then patched it together again with love. I'm gonna go cry my god dam heart out now. And probably reread Bloody Spade ~♠️❤️♣️♦️~
My brain doesn’t work in English today, so here my thoughts in Italian where I sound a little bit more smart.
A great sequel, expanding the story and characters from Bloody Spade. Five stars because I couldn't think of anything that needed improvement! I wouldn't mind seeing more of this world and the characters, but the story wraps up nicely with hints of how the characters' lives will go on. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year.
It's rare that I like a second book more than the first but holy crap this second book blew me away. Heart, tension, edge-of-your-seat'ness, and several tears. Very fun read had me shoveling the words into my eyes I couldn't read fast enough to find out what would happen next. Can't wait to see what Brittany M Willows does next.
GAH! What an amazing sequel to a story I love. Full of action, amazing battle scenes (complete with anime-esque transformations), & lots of...well...heart! I've come to adore Ellen & Iori, along with the rest of the diverse cast.
I don’t even know where to begin. This book was phenomenal! The Keepers grew on me so much more than I thought possible with how much I loved the first book. If you enjoyed Bloody Spade, you must read this sequel!
