I read this after seeing the Washington Post review of the book which quotes Feder as saying, “If we zoom out, we see that the Darcy myth also helps to prop up and fortify a very Gothic, patriarchal universe that is, and always has been, scary for anyone who is not a very particular type of man. After all, if we are trained from childhood to invest ourselves in men who treat us poorly, aren’t we more likely to end up in abusive situations and under threat of assault?”
This is one of my least favorite arguments -- you can't divorce it from victim-blaming logic that posits that we can shield ourselves from abuse if we only consume the right media -- and I don't think it has any place cropping up in 2023 literary criticism. I went into the book ready to highlight and rebuke it, which is much more of a monumental task than I initially anticipated.
The crux of the argument is that Elizabeth overcoming her first poor impression of Darcy, namely his high-handed boorishness, trains women into thinking that they can change men and mold them into a swoon-worthy hero. Feder sees this as a great lie that's sold to women, and she bafflingly repeats this conclusion every chapter, as if I had forgot what she said 20 pages prior. In Feder's view of Pride and Prejudice, Darcy's assistance in marrying Lydia to Wickham is a horror story: he's tying Lydia to an abuser for life in order to save Elizabeth's reputation (and therefore, "his brand."). This not only seems like an incredibly uncharitable interpretation of Darcy's actions, but it removes what both Elizabeth and Lydia want. This is an insurmountable flaw of this book: no individual woman has motivations that can be explored, but womankind is a collective of victims and potential victims.
Because the book is The Darcy Myth, Mr. Darcy's traits are stretched to fit every example of bad male behavior Feder can think of. Connell from Normal People is Darcy, Simon from Bridgerton is Darcy (I don't think she's read the book? She only references the show.), LORD BYRON IS DARCY.
I have a suspicion that Feder, who says she is not a Janeite but a Mary Shelley fan, would have been more comfortable writing a book dunking on Byron. But Byron was a real person -- not a myth or a trope. There is the Byronic Hero, which has been written about extensively by scholars, but Feder spends less time discussing The Giaour and Childe Harold than she does calling Byron a "fuccboi."
The real people thing -- I cannot wrap my brain around this. There's an entire chapter where Feder interviews people about the Darcys they have known, the men that have manipulated or abused them. I don't understand what we are doing here! Mr. Darcy didn't neg you or ignore your text -- Mr. Darcy is not a real person.
I hate the paranoia and gender essentialism of this book. I kept thinking of suburban women who are convinced that they are going to be kidnapped in a Target parking lot -- it's a sad way to live, and a deeply conservative worldview. If, as Feder says, we should pay closer attention to our first impressions, then what of our biases? We spend so much time talking about how Darcy can't change -- but what about Elizabeth?

Sorry, but this book is really bad, rests on extremely shoddy scholarship and attempts to put a feminist cover over a really gross and regressive argument--that there is a 'right' kind of media women can consume that will keep them safe from male violence.
First, I might not have been so harsh on this book, except it is explicitly didactic. The author claims that liking Mr. Darcy "sets us up for traumatic romantic experiences." She also claims "the Darcy myth" (by which she means liking this fictional character or finding him romantic) makes us "more likely to end up in abusive situations." The entire argument puts the onus on women to consume only "good" and not "bad" books, movies, or TV to protect themselves from abuse!
The scholarship here is absolutely paper-thin. Mr. Darcy is not a "rake" or a "brooder" or a "bad boy," so why are large portions of this book spent on the rakes and brooders and assholes of other books and movies? After some serious stretching, Mr. Darcy is deemed to be "rake-adjacent." Ok then.
The whole moral of this book is about how you can't change a romantic partner, so you shouldn't try. That's true, but what on earth does this have to do with Mr. Darcy and Pride & Prejudice? Elizabeth Bennet never sets out to to do that or tries to do that.
The argument that Mr. Darcy is a Gothic hero/villain is also baffling and falls flat.
Furthermore, this book is almost aggressively ahistorical. The main evidence that Mr. Darcy is a villain is that he paid Wickham to marry Lydia, which the author sees as "letting Wickham off the hook." Exactly how would abandoning Lydia to the Regency fate of an "immoral" unmarried woman have been kinder? And all of this "do not marry a difficult man," is SUPER great advice, except wtf does it have to do with early 19th century women, who didn't have any goddamn options? "I wish Lydia Bennet had TikTok" is all very lmao yolo but what does it actually have to do with grappling with the text itself?
You might be surprised to know most of the book isn't about Mr. Darcy at all, but various other men from books and TV. Here are some men who are deemed to be like Mr. Darcy:
- Both Gaston AND the Beast from Beauty & the Beast
- Edward Cullen and Christian Gray
- Lord Byron and Jake Gyllenhaal
- Heathcliff
There is also a lengthy and extremely embarrassing section where various real-life anonymized people blame their relationship troubles on Mr. Darcy. This section is boring af.
Finally, the whole book is written with this weird "we have been brainwashed to love monsters" preachy tone. Ma'am, who is this "we" you speak of? I'm in my pajamas on my phone while my husband is out grocery shopping.
Overall, this book pissed me off.

My reaction isn’t quite as negative as others, but still lots of problems to point out—as well as a few major accomplishments.
On the positive side, Feder's conversational tone brings fresh accessibility to literary analysis. This is no small feat in a body of writing that is almost universally unreadable due to the impenetrable prose of stuffy academics. I say this as someone who writes literary analysis and tries very, very hard to both maintain high level of academic thesis-building and make it engaging for the reader. It's a tough task and rarely succeeds. But I can read Feder with a leaned-in curiosity that has me more captivated than most novels, let alone academic texts. Major kudos are deserved.
The problem is that Feder sacrifices academic clarity for the sake of keeping things brisk and breezy. The false equivalencies are numerous. The thesis statements are almost never supported—or contradicted so often they end up meaning nothing. She tries too hard to loop in pop culture references which range from completely irrelevant to ineffective at strengthening her thesis. Almost every argument aims to have it both ways, or four different ways. I'm fine with complexity. Most things—especially Jane Austen—are not as simple as this or that. But the horse she keeps beating, that the "Darcy Myth" has made us beholden to the patriarchy, just never makes sense.
A more accurate title may have been "The Darcy Conversation-Starter" because I do think the book serves well to illustrate how powerful and enduring Austen's most famous novel remains, all these centuries later. I would be much more on board if she took us through a tour of how Austen's influence can be seen in Taylor Swift and The Bachelor if she didn't keep trying to lump it into this meaningless myth.
One of the 10,000 arguments she tries to cram into the book is that Darcy haunts our real-life relationships because he teaches us that obnoxious partners can be reformed into sexy, perfect mates who act exactly as they're supposed to. She says this is a problem because, more often than not, bad people don't change.
I like this argument okay, except I feel she must be reading a different Pride and Prejudice than me. So much about the book demonstrates that BOTH Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy must overcome their personal baggage before they can experience love. Placing all the blame on Darcy is a rather appalling misreading of the text. Maybe to make a change we need to start with looking in the mirror.
Furthermore, the need for personal change of the protagonist as well as the love interest has Gothic roots. Jane Eyre has a tragic childhood which has understandably damaged her almost beyond repair. But by the end, her growth into independence and Rochester's being knocked down a peg even out their differences and place them on an equal playing field ripe for romance. Feder doesn't talk much about Jane Eyre (oddly enough) but if she did, she would probably argue this is another situation where the perfect protagonist must get to work fixing up her flawed love interest. That's just not what's in these books.
I do love that she brings Gothic into the conversation. As someone with a master's degree in Gothic Literature, I can confirm she's absolutely right that Austen was influenced by these novels. Northanger Abbey is literally a Gothic parody and, as is pointed out, Austen uses much of the same tropes in her novels. That said, being influenced by Gothic literature and the tropes of these spooky novels doesn't mean that Darcy is secretly the devil. The point of Gothic romance is usually that the protagonist needs to mature and then decipher which suitor wants to kill her and which wants to marry her. Often the twist is that the handsome, stereotypically perfect match is the one trying to murder her (probably for an inheritance) while the scarred, seemingly shifty man is really trying to protect her. The point being that our own superficial leanings may not only cause us to reject a perfect match, but could even steer us into danger.
I do agree with Feder when she mentions that the frequency of this "twist" and the canonization of Pride and Prejudice may have become so ingrained in popular culture that we find ourselves seeing green flags in problem people rather than red flags. If she had stuck with that argument and didn't try to stretch it into so many irrelevant directions, this book might be a masterpiece. But only if she also acknowledged that Elizabeth Bennett isn’t all green flags either. Love is a two-way street and if you’re hyperfocused on anyone else’s problem, however real that problem may be, you’re probably not putting in the work to improve yourself.
As an aside, Feder gets an extra dose of ire from me when she dismisses The Monk by M.G. Lewis and even instructs us not to read this masterpiece. Anybody trying to be an authority on Gothic literature who encourages this novel to be ignored automatically loses credibility.
Anyway, this long review is a testament to the fact that The Darcy Myth is indeed a good conversation starter. Academic writing which fires up the reader and encourages a dialogue is rare and should be celebrated. Because of this, I have to admit the book—despite its numerous flaws—is an overall success.

"The Darcy Myth" by Rachel Feder is an interrogation into the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy and whether or not he (and Austen) are specifically responsible for certain toxic archetypes that women today are so fond of. Personally and academically, I found this to not be really well-thought out. I thought it was an interesting topic because why do we idolize somebody like Darcy but villainize someone else? I felt that although Feder seemed close to doing some real analysis, it would just never quite get there. Altogether, it just didn't feel like Feder had enough to support her main thesis. This definitely did not need to be a book. It was definitely something that I think should have been MUCH shorter and probably submitted to a few journals before a big book publication.
As an Austen academic and someone whose favorite Austen hero is Henry Tilney, I'd recommend this if you're not super familiar with Austen academically. If you love the movies and the tv shows, this would probably be a really interesting read but having read quite a lot of Austen scholarship over the past decade, I found it lacking.

I wanted to rate this at least 2 stars. Reexamining Austen’s work through a “Gothic lens?” Cool, sign me up! Written in very accessible language even general Austen fans can understand and enjoy? Amazing! And then the author goes on to horribly misinterpret and misrepresent Pride and Prejudice.
Spoiler, trying to call P&P a “gothic horror” and force it into the gothic tropes as we understand them makes you take some astounding leaps in logic. It doesn’t work.
Right off the bat, Feder calls Darcy a literary monster we need to deconstruct and provides no textual proof for her claims. A few times she dances dangerously close to ruining her own interpretation of the character by referencing the text that goes against what she says, but she just brushes it off. It seems as though Feder is trying to deconstruct the Byronic Hero but understands that general audiences may not know what that is exactly. People do know Darcy and Lizzie though.
Listen, is Mr Darcy perfect? No! Looking back with modern eyes, are some of the actions he took, particularly with Lydia, problematic? Yup. But to brush off the historical context and demand we only look at Darcy as modern people is disingenuous and leads to poorly reasoned books like this.

Huh. I gave The Darcy Myth a fair shot and have been mulling over how to talk about it for a day or two, but I believe it has two major issues as far as making its central point: 1) The book can never figure out who its target audience is (and what it's supposed to be talking to them about), and 2) it needed a stronger edit, as evidenced by the fact that it really tries to do A Lot™ in its pages but never really commits to much.
There were several strong passages in here and Rachel Feder's writing voice was entertaining, but by trying to cover so much ground (including arguing that most popular contemporary media can be traced through a Darcy-inspired lineage), the main crux of Feder's argument became watered down and repetitive by the end. After a while, I was asking myself, what exactly are we supposed to do with all of this? I never quite got the answer.
There were several strong passages in here and Rachel Feder's writing voice was entertaining, but by trying to cover so much ground (including arguing that most popular contemporary media can be traced through a Darcy-inspired lineage), the main crux of Feder's argument became watered down and repetitive by the end. It's been such a long time since I have so thoroughly loathed a book from cover to cover. But Rachel Feder has really filled that breach, and I congratulate her for giving me something other than Kate Middleton to think about.
TL; DR=so many reductionist takes on Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen, and the English novel
A brief bit of context: I have BAs in English and History, an MA in English (thesis project in Northanger Abbey adaptations and the depictions of female reading pleasure), and a PhD in English (dissertation on the novel of manners updated for the 1980s). In other words: I've got skin in the game. And I am offended when scholarship moves beyond mediocrity to a slipshod execution of a questionable premise that is *easily* counter-argued by the book in question.
The premise of this book is that women have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to romantic literary heroes and the trope that we can also have that love story if we only persist long enough. And to be entirely fair to Dr. Feder, I agree with this argument. Where it immediately falls apart is in her application of this entire myth to one Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pride and Prejudice. Yeah. That Mr. Darcy. Dr. Feder completes her argument by asserting time and again that the Mr. Darcy myth proves that we can change a man and we can reform him if only we pursue him long enough and wait long enough with love and patience.
First of all. Mr. Darcy CHANGES HIMSELF. His way of proposing to Elizabeth is so unappealing that she rightfully repulses it and calls him on his shit. He actually takes it seriously and works actively to improve his behavior and show her that he does not resent her correction. She does not seek him out ever. HE SEEKS HER OUT. The most Elizabeth does is review her own assumptions and change them, too. THAT'S why we like Pride and Prejudice, because we believe in the idea that a man exists who is willing to better himself and listen to feedback while also challenging us to rethink our own prejudices. It's not about the sexy swimming or the dark bedroom eyes (although, for a film adaptation, it doesn't hurt), but it's about the willingness to grow and learn. Feder entirely misses this aspect of the novel and blithely spends her time pretending that Elizabeth is chasing after Darcy without end and that women use the Darcy example to be discontented in their own romantic pursuits (a major plot point in Austenland, which I also hated).
Feder also spends the book deeply indignant that Darcy pays Wickham off to be married to Lydia, because while Lydia is respectable, she is now trapped in marriage to a monster and that she is a victim to monstrous men.
This is a reductive and ahistorical view of what was a complex social situation. Austen makes clear that Lydia went off with Wickham of her own accord and refused to leave him, saying she knew she and Wickham were getting married, but it didn't matter to her when. Her letters to Kitty are full of inappropriate material, so on *some* level, she is aware of how her choices impact her future. Should Wickham have failed to marry Lydia, she would have had to be taken in by pitying relatives and publicly disavowed, or worse, turned to prostitution for room and board. See: Fantine in Les Miserables. The options for unprotected women were deeply grim and exploitative. Marriage to a bad man was absolutely not ideal, but the money put forward determined that she had a way of putting food on the table, as well as some protection to ensure that she was treated somewhat humanely. Again, no one wants to be trapped in a bad marriage, but it could have happened whether she eloped or not. As Charlotte Lucas notes, happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance, and while our modern sensibilities balk at this cynical notion, it's not wrong.
I do agree with Dr. Feder that the myth of the unavailable man is poisonous and toxic. And had she named the book The Rochester Myth, I would not be writing a review of this length. But to pour her ire on Mr. Darcy when such male leads as Mr. Rochester (Jane Eyre), Angel Clare (Tess of the D'Urbervilles), Tom Jones (Tom Jones), Mr. Grandcourt (Daniel Deronda), Heathcliffe (Wuthering Heights), Tertius Lydgate (Middlemarch), Mr. Booby (Mr. B-- in Pamela, but major thanks to Henry Fielding for THAT revision), Mr. Lovelace (Clarissa) are all RIGHT THERE is...a choice.

As an academic, I took exception to her claim that we should emphasize Austen as a romantic (Romantic?) author influenced by the Gothic and not stake our claim in her work as a realist. I think she confuses literary realism with realistic fiction here, because to prioritize Austen's connection to Gothic writers (like Ann Radcliffe or Monk Lewis) and diminish the influences that Samuel Richardson, Samuel Johnson, and Alexander Pope *also* had on her is also a reductive argument. Austen was a notoriously well-read woman, and while she did enjoy Gothic fiction, she also enjoyed making fun of it and so many literary trends of the day. So many of her characters from her novels represent a problematic or extreme aspect of society. Just look at how many clergyman get the treatment from her, a clergyman's daughter!
Ultimately, I think it's deeply unfortunate that Dr. Feder went for the "hot take" to get hits on BookTok when a more nuanced and complex narrative could have emerged. It's quite interesting to view Austen through a Gothic lens, but a better-researched book would have served her argument more effectively.
Should Dr. Feder write a book on Dracula and femininity, I would read the hell of it, because that chapter was easily the most interesting part of the book, and with Feder's research expertise, it makes sense.

I wanted to throw this book across the room SO MANY TIMES.
The premise is flawed--who says that everyone is looking for a Darcy in their own love lives? And then the reaches keep coming. We all want bad boys because we think we can fix them. (Also, Darcy is a bad boy?? Really?) We read all love interests as a potential Darcy (and she gives confirmation bias accounts of this being true), but when they turn out to be Wickhams, it's the fault of the myth because you're ascribing Darcyness onto them, not because they might actually just be shitty people? Even if you manage to get a Darcy, he's patriarchal. Somehow P&P is a Gothic horror? She compares Darcy to Heathcliff by showing that they have nothing in common?

2,5 ⭐️ Interpretacja postaci Darcy’ego według autorki jest ciekawa, ale… nope. Uważam ten cały mit za bzdurę a wiązanie związkowych niepowodzeń ludzi z Darcym za głupotę. To znaczy jasne, może parę historii przytoczonych przez autorkę ma w kontekście jej tezy jakiś sens, ale ogólnie to wszystko jest naciągane.
Plus autorka bardzo próbuje być cool i zamiast cool wychodzi jej cringe. Przekleństwa w tej książce uważam za totalnie zbędne i słabe.
Ciekawa za to była dla mnie reintrepretacja Dumy i uprzedzenia pod kątem horroru, a także różne domysły autorki, co w powieściach Austen działo się na niewidocznym planie.

so the darcy myth huh?
this was a brilliant and interesting study on how women are conditioned and attracted to basically being demolished just to get ourselves a love story, cause apparently mr. darcy from pride and prejudice is presented as the hero while maybe he’s just ken!!
sorry i had to say it (couldnt restrain myself). We’re lured in by their bad boy/villain/tragic background story plot and that’s what the darcy myth is about, at the end of the day, mr darcy is really very arrogant and a jerk, but we kinda love all the excuses we find for his behaviour, and that’s that.
the only thing id criticize is that it can be sometimes repetitive on the matter of whickam/darcy etc, but was really entertaining otherwise, couldn’t stop reading!!

Przez ostatnie kilka dni zastanawiałam się, jak napisać tę recenzję. Zacznę więc może od pobudzenia waszej wyobraźni. Wyobraźcie sobie osobę, która zrobiła sobie kolację, i zamierza teraz zjeść ją przed telewizorem. Siada i ma takie: „Chwila, nie wzięłam widelca”. Rusza po widelec, wraca, okazuje się, że zostawiła pilot w kuchni. Wraca do kuchni, bierze pilot, siada przed telewizorem, ale nie wzięła nic do picia. Wraca do kuchni. Potem do jedzenia. Gdzie ten pilot? Pewnie jest w kuchni. Chodzi tak i w końcu kolacja jest zimna, pilot wylądował w zmywarce, a telewizor za oknem. Taki vibe daje mi ta książka. Autorka wzięła wszystkie sroki za ogon, stwierdzając, że w niecałych 300 stronach stworzy arcydzieło. Wyszło wielkie, udające coś podniosłego „nic”.
Pomysł był ciekawy, ale już na samym początku autorka podjęła złą decyzję, bowiem uznała, że skupi się na Darcym. Kilka razy zastanawiałam się, czy faktycznie przeczytała kiedyś „Dumę i Uprzedzenie”, bo czytając jej wywody, miało się wrażenie, że ta kobieta nie wie, jak zachowywał się Darcy. Najgorsze w tym wszystkim było to, jak oskarżała właśnie jego, za to, co przydarzyło się Lydii. Ale może cofnę się o krok i wspomnę o tym – Rachel Feder postanawia wspomnieć nam o rozpustnikach i potworach i usilnie próbuje przekazać nam, że Darcy jest jednym z nich. Przy czym nic, ABSOLUTNIE NIC, nie wskazuje na to, że Darcy był jednym lub drugim. Z pewnością nie był rozpustnikiem. Z pewnością nie był potworem. To, co opisywała, było co najwyżej zachowaniem Wickhama z tej samej powieści. Ale być może uznała, że tytuł „Mit Wickhama” nie zadziała tak dobrze na sprzedaż.
Wróćmy do sprawy Lydii. Feder twierdzi, że Darcy ochronił Wickhama, a poza tym przecież obchodziło go tylko to, żeby Elizabeth zmieniła o nim zdanie, więc była to też manipulacja. Całkowicie zamyka oczy na to, że gdyby Wickham nie wziął ślubu z Lydią, to ją by to najbardziej zabolało. Ją i jej rodzinę. Darcy nie pomagał Wickhamowi. Pomagał rodzinie Elizabeth, a to, że żadne wyjście nie było dobre, to już nie jego wina. Moglibyśmy równie dobrze oskarżyć tu Lydię (chociaż pomimo niechęci do niej, nie sądzę, że powinniśmy ją krytykować. Mogła być młoda, mogła być głupia, ale wciąż pozostawała ofiarą). Moglibyśmy oskarżyć też naszego kochanego ojca Elizabeth i jej sióstr. Moglibyśmy oskarżyć jego żonę. Moglibyśmy w końcu oskarżyć samego Wickhama. Ale nie, lepiej oskarżyć jedyną osobę, która znalazła rozwiązanie. Ogromnie wścieka mnie spłycenie tej zapewne bolesnej decyzji Darcy’ego przez autorkę. Czy ona myśli, że Darcy, który musiał patrzeć na cierpienie swojej siostry, naprawdę chciał połączyć Lydię z taką bestią? Najwidoczniej Feder nie rozumie tego w taki sposób jak ja, ponieważ na stronie 138 możemy przeczytać żartobliwą uwagę autorki o tym, że Darcy’ego najbardziej nawiedza „myśl o tej jednej chwili, gdy jego siostra prawie uprawiała s*ks”. No tak, bo przecież to takie śmieszne, że Darcy czuje się odpowiedzialny za młodszą siostrę, którą chciał wykorzystać jego dawny przyjaciel.
Ktoś tu może powiedzieć: „ej, czegoś nie zrozumiałaś. Autorka przecież mówiła, że…” i wiecie co? Może macie rację. Może autorka odbiera Darcy’ego w inny sposób. Ale odebrałam to tak, a nie inaczej, bo autorka sama nie wie, co myśli. Jej opinia o Darcym zmienia się raz na kilka stron i to w tak drastyczny sposób, że nie mam pojęcia, co chciała przekazać, i jestem prawie pewna, że i ona go nie ma.
W jaki sposób na przykład Gaston zazębia się z archetypem Darcy’ego? Szczególnie że podobno Bestia jest jak Darcy. Ktoś mógłby powiedzieć, że skoro Bestia jest jak Darcy, to Gaston będzie jak Wickham. Więc czemu autorka twierdzi inaczej? I czemu wspomina o kwestii Rodrigo-Bassett-Carpenter? Naprawdę, czy autorka wiedziała wcześniej, o czym będzie pisać, czy po prostu uznała, że weźmie sobie kilka popularnych haseł, które słabo rozwinie, i wyjdzie z tego coś, co można sprzedać? Pamiętam całą dramę z Olivią, Joshuą i Sabriną i nie widzę tu nic, co mogłoby pasować do książki o Darcym. „Reakcja na drivers licence pokazuje, że niezależnie od tego, jak bardzo świadomi, też siebie, się stajemy, wirus Darcy’ego mutuje i znajduje nowe sposoby, żeby przeniknąć nam do szpiku kości”…
…
…
CO?
Idźmy dalej! Autorka pozwala sobie pogdybać, co by było, jeśli Darcy mimo tego, co zrobił dla Lydii, nie zmieniłby zdania Elizabeth. Po raz kolejny Feder insynuuje, że Darcy manipuluje swoją ukochaną i robi to wszystko, żeby ona go pokochała. Chociaż wiemy, że Darcy nie chciał się przyznać do tego, co zrobił. To nie była jego karta przetargowa. Zrobił to dla niej, ale nie dla niej jako „patrz, co dla ciebie zrobiłem. Kochaj mnie”, tylko dla niej jako „teraz twoja rodzina będzie spokojniejsza, ale nie musisz wiedzieć, że to moja sprawka. Ważne, że jesteś szczęśliwa”. Jest to według mnie ważne w książkach, ale i w życiu, żebyśmy zrozumieli, jak ważna jest intencja, z którą coś robimy. Nie można mówić, że Darcy jest potworem. Jasne, nie był idealny, ale pomiędzy ideałem, a potworem istnieje przepaść. Ale Feder woli skupiać się na skrajnościach. Jeśli Darcy zrobił coś źle, całkowicie nieświadomie, musi być potworem. I rozpustnikiem. Nie zapominajmy o tym, że jest rozpustnikiem, chociaż dosłownie nic na to nie wskazuje.
„Pamiętaj. Darcy jest życzliwy, dopóki dostaje to, czego chce. A Darcy zawsze dostaje to, czego chce”. FAŁSZ. Ale uznajmy – tak dla zgrywy – że to prawdziwe stwierdzenie. Skoro zawsze dostaje to, czego chce, to czemu mamy do niego pretensje? Przecież według autorki Darcy zawsze jest życzliwy… no ale wiemy, że nie jest. Czyli… czyli życzliwość nie jest zależna od tego, co dostaje Darcy. Bo przecież na początku Darcy miał wszystko. A i tak nie był życzliwy. Ale bywało też tak, że nie mógł mieć kogoś, kogo pragnął. A jednak nie stał się kimś na miarę Wickhama. Więc o czym autorka gada?
Odpowiedź brzmi: o wszystkim i o niczym. Sięga po kolejne tematy, zamiast skupić się na rowinięciu wcześniejszych i w taki oto sposób czytamy przez pół strony o powieści, w której ktoś zabija wiewiórkę. Konkluzja jest taka, że autorka „nie oskarża tu pana Darcy’ego o mordowanie wiewiórek”. Na tym etapie naprawdę chciałam wyrzucić tę książkę za okno, bo po co w takim razie zaczynała ten temat? Czy ona wiedziała, o czym pisze? Bo przez całą książkę ma się wrażenie, że pisze o wszystkim, a potem łaskawie próbuje połączyć to z Darcym, bo na swoje nieszczęście wpisała go do tytułu.
Mamy tu też na przykład zachwycającą myśl, żeby czytać DiU jako wariację na temat Czerwonego Kapturka. Nie, autorka nie sądzi, że Darcy jest wilkiem. Sądzi, że jest nim Wickham. Ale po co nam to w książce o Darcym? I po co nam wzmianka o tym jednym gościu, który śpiewał w Maroon 5 i zdradził żonę? Jeśli mamy rozmawiać o Darcym, rozmawiajmy o Darcym. A jeśli nie, nie próbujmy wciskać ludziom na siłę, że o to będzie chodzić w książce.
I żeby nie było – rozumiem, co mniej więcej chciała przekazać nam autorka. Chciała przekazać nam, że jak już naczytamy się tej DiU i innych historii, w których mężczyzna jest podobny do Darcy’ego, to włącza nam się taka myśl, że jeśli ktoś jest dla nas wredny, to się zmieni, bo przecież Darcy się zmienił. To jest ciekawa teoria, ale znacznie lepiej wybrzmiałaby, gdyby autorka skupiła się nie na Darcym, ale na ludziach takich jak Darcy z początku książki. Bo Darcy nie był rozpustnikiem ani potworem, ale mnóstwo ludzi, którzy wydają się Darcym przy pierwszym spotkaniu, może okazać się rozpustnikiem i/lub potworem. Ciekawie jest spojrzeć na to, jak romantyzujemy pewne zachowania. Kolejny przykład, bardzo kontrowersyjny? Gilbert! Autorka o nim nie wspomina, ale Gil zaczepia Anię, obraża ją. Bo „kto się czubi, ten się lubi”. Jednak nie powiemy, że Gilbert był wrednym, przemocowym gnojkiem. Możemy jednak powiedzieć, że niektórzy chłopcy, którzy zachowują się podobnie, mogą się stać takimi gnojkami. Robienie z Darcy’ego złoczyńcy jest tak płytkim zabiegiem, że naprawdę niszczy całą książkę, której tematyka mogłaby być ciekawa. Wystarczyło skupić się na psychologicznym aspekcie człowieka, podając przykłady z literatury, zamiast podawać przykłady z literatury, twierdząc, że wszyscy ci bohaterowie są problematyczni. Bo w tym przypadku problemem nie był Darcy. Ani Austen. Problemem są ludzie, którzy intencjonalnie manipulują i krzywdzą innych. Darcy do nich nie należy, o czym autorka książki wydaje się nie wiedzieć.
Jedyne, co mi się podobało w tej książce? Krytyka Chucka Bassa. I hate him!!!! I znów, sądzę, że ulegamy tu temu myśleniu, że potwór może stać się dobry. Ale czy to ma coś wspólnego z Darcym? Raczej nie. Wychodzi więc, że książka podobałaby mi się znacznie bardziej, gdyby tytuł nie okazał się clickbaitem.
Zatrzymajmy się jeszcze przez chwilę na tych cytatach:
„Opiera się na fantazji o zakochaniu w Byronie”. „Nie jestem w tych tematach ekspertką, ale mam absolutną, niezachwianą pewność, że chodzi tu o s*ks z Byronem”. „Dwanaście historii, które tak naprawdę są o s*ksie z Byronem”.

Na samym końcu książki mamy za to szybkie wspomnienie o Dirty Dancing, ulubiony film autorki, jest przykładem mitu anty-Darcy’ego. Równie szybko, bo w zasadzie na niecałych czterech stronach, autorka wspomina o kwestii aborcji. Faktycznie bardzo poważnie potraktowała ten temat, skoro pojawił się tak na doczepkę. To jest ten powrót po pilot, gdy jedzenie stygnie. Bo skoro trzeba było złapać wszystkie stroki za ogon, to wszystkie, a nie tylko większość. Zamiast skupić się na kilku rzeczach, można wtrącić tu Olivię Rodrigo, Maroon 5, prawa kobiet, s*ks z Byronem i mnóstwo innych rzeczy, które tworzą jeden wielki chaos. Ta książka mnie zmęczyła. A szkoda, bo na początku liczyłam, że mnie oczaruje. Bo może nie chciałam się z nią zgadzać, ale uwielbiam przyglądać się innym perspektywom i sądziłam, że czegoś mnie nauczy, coś otworzy w mojej głowie. Niestety.
Na plus: okładka. Bardzo mi się podoba. I lekki język – przekład czytało się bardzo przyjemnie, jakbym spotkała się z koleżanką na kawie. Zakładam, że oryginał też czytało się w podobnym stylu! Krytyka Chucka Bassa. I ten cytat:
„Literatura, nawet dogodnie apolityczna, jak można postrzegać zwłaszcza powieści Jane Austen, nigdy nie ma charakteru neutralnego. A odczytanie literatury nigdy nie jest neutralne – odwołując się do literatury, nie szukamy neutralności. Nie po to ona istnieje”.

Kilka razy zastanawiałam się, czy faktycznie przeczytała kiedyś „Dumę i Uprzedzenie”, bo czytając jej wywody, miało się wrażenie, że ta kobieta nie wie, jak zachowywał się Darcy. Najgorsze w tym wszystkim było to, jak oskarżała właśnie jego, za to, co przydarzyło się Lydii. Ale może cofnę się o krok i wspomnę o tym – Rachel Feder postanawia wspomnieć nam o rozpustnikach i potworach i usilnie próbuje przekazać nam, że Darcy jest jednym z nich. Przy czym nic, ABSOLUTNIE NIC, nie wskazuje na to, że Darcy był jednym lub drugim. Z pewnością nie był rozpustnikiem. Z pewnością nie był potworem. To, co opisywała, było co najwyżej zachowaniem Wickhama z tej samej powieści. Ale być może uznała, że tytuł „Mit Wickhama” nie zadziała tak dobrze na sprzedaż.
Wróćmy do sprawy Lydii. Feder twierdzi, że Darcy ochronił Wickhama, a poza tym przecież obchodziło go tylko to, żeby Elizabeth zmieniła o nim zdanie, więc była to też manipulacja. Całkowicie zamyka oczy na to, że gdyby Wickham nie wziął ślubu z Lydią, to ją by to najbardziej zabolało. Ją i jej rodzinę. Darcy nie pomagał Wickhamowi. Pomagał rodzinie Elizabeth, a to, że żadne wyjście nie było dobre, to już nie jego wina. Moglibyśmy równie dobrze oskarżyć tu Lydię (chociaż pomimo niechęci do niej, nie sądzę, że powinniśmy ją krytykować. Mogła być młoda, mogła być głupia, ale wciąż pozostawała ofiarą). Moglibyśmy oskarżyć też naszego kochanego ojca Elizabeth i jej sióstr. Moglibyśmy oskarżyć jego żonę. Moglibyśmy w końcu oskarżyć samego Wickhama. Ale nie, lepiej oskarżyć jedyną osobę, która znalazła rozwiązanie. Ogromnie wścieka mnie spłycenie tej zapewne bolesnej decyzji Darcy’ego przez autorkę. Czy ona myśli, że Darcy, który musiał patrzeć na cierpienie swojej siostry, naprawdę chciał połączyć Lydię z taką bestią? Najwidoczniej Feder nie rozumie tego w taki sposób jak ja, ponieważ na stronie 138 możemy przeczytać żartobliwą uwagę autorki o tym, że Darcy’ego najbardziej nawiedza „myśl o tej jednej chwili, gdy jego siostra prawie uprawiała s*ks”. No tak, bo przecież to takie śmieszne, że Darcy czuje się odpowiedzialny za młodszą siostrę, którą chciał wykorzystać jego dawny przyjaciel.
Ktoś tu może powiedzieć: „ej, czegoś nie zrozumiałaś. Autorka przecież mówiła, że…” i wiecie co? Może macie rację. Może autorka odbiera Darcy’ego w inny sposób. Ale odebrałam to tak, a nie inaczej, bo autorka sama nie wie, co myśli. Jej opinia o Darcym zmienia się raz na kilka stron i to w tak drastyczny sposób, że nie mam pojęcia, co chciała przekazać, i jestem prawie pewna, że i ona go nie ma.
W jaki sposób na przykład Gaston zazębia się z archetypem Darcy’ego? Szczególnie że podobno Bestia jest jak Darcy. Ktoś mógłby powiedzieć, że skoro Bestia jest jak Darcy, to Gaston będzie jak Wickham. Więc czemu autorka twierdzi inaczej? I czemu wspomina o kwestii Rodrigo-Bassett-Carpenter? Naprawdę, czy autorka wiedziała wcześniej, o czym będzie pisać, czy po prostu uznała, że weźmie sobie kilka popularnych haseł, które słabo rozwinie, i wyjdzie z tego coś, co można sprzedać? Pamiętam całą dramę z Olivią, Joshuą i Sabriną i nie widzę tu nic, co mogłoby pasować do książki o Darcym. „Reakcja na drivers licence pokazuje, że niezależnie od tego, jak bardzo świadomi, też siebie, się stajemy, wirus Darcy’ego mutuje i znajduje nowe sposoby, żeby przeniknąć nam do szpiku kości”…

Idźmy dalej! Autorka pozwala sobie pogdybać, co by było, jeśli Darcy mimo tego, co zrobił dla Lydii, nie zmieniłby zdania Elizabeth. Po raz kolejny Feder insynuuje, że Darcy manipuluje swoją ukochaną i robi to wszystko, żeby ona go pokochała. Chociaż wiemy, że Darcy nie chciał się przyznać do tego, co zrobił. To nie była jego karta przetargowa. Zrobił to dla niej, ale nie dla niej jako „patrz, co dla ciebie zrobiłem. Kochaj mnie”, tylko dla niej jako „teraz twoja rodzina będzie spokojniejsza, ale nie musisz wiedzieć, że to moja sprawka. Ważne, że jesteś szczęśliwa”. Jest to według mnie ważne w książkach, ale i w życiu, żebyśmy zrozumieli, jak ważna jest intencja, z którą coś robimy. Nie można mówić, że Darcy jest potworem. Jasne, nie był idealny, ale pomiędzy ideałem, a potworem istnieje przepaść. Ale Feder woli skupiać się na skrajnościach. Jeśli Darcy zrobił coś źle, całkowicie nieświadomie, musi być potworem. I rozpustnikiem. Nie zapominajmy o tym, że jest rozpustnikiem, chociaż dosłownie nic na to nie wskazuje.
„Pamiętaj. Darcy jest życzliwy, dopóki dostaje to, czego chce. A Darcy zawsze dostaje to, czego chce”. FAŁSZ. Ale uznajmy – tak dla zgrywy – że to prawdziwe stwierdzenie. Skoro zawsze dostaje to, czego chce, to czemu mamy do niego pretensje? Przecież według autorki Darcy zawsze jest życzliwy… no ale wiemy, że nie jest. Czyli… czyli życzliwość nie jest zależna od tego, co dostaje Darcy. Bo przecież na początku Darcy miał wszystko. A i tak nie był życzliwy. Ale bywało też tak, że nie mógł mieć kogoś, kogo pragnął. A jednak nie stał się kimś na miarę Wickhama. Więc o czym autorka gada?
Odpowiedź brzmi: o wszystkim i o niczym. Sięga po kolejne tematy, zamiast skupić się na rowinięciu wcześniejszych i w taki oto sposób czytamy przez pół strony o powieści, w której ktoś zabija wiewiórkę. Konkluzja jest taka, że autorka „nie oskarża tu pana Darcy’ego o mordowanie wiewiórek”. Na tym etapie naprawdę chciałam wyrzucić tę książkę za okno, bo po co w takim razie zaczynała ten temat? Czy ona wiedziała, o czym pisze? Bo przez całą książkę ma się wrażenie, że pisze o wszystkim, a potem łaskawie próbuje połączyć to z Darcym, bo na swoje nieszczęście wpisała go do tytułu.
Mamy tu też na przykład zachwycającą myśl, żeby czytać DiU jako wariację na temat Czerwonego Kapturka. Nie, autorka nie sądzi, że Darcy jest wilkiem. Sądzi, że jest nim Wickham. Ale po co nam to w książce o Darcym? I po co nam wzmianka o tym jednym gościu, który śpiewał w Maroon 5 i zdradził żonę? Jeśli mamy rozmawiać o Darcym, rozmawiajmy o Darcym. A jeśli nie, nie próbujmy wciskać ludziom na siłę, że o to będzie chodzić w książce.
I żeby nie było – rozumiem, co mniej więcej chciała przekazać nam autorka. Chciała przekazać nam, że jak już naczytamy się tej DiU i innych historii, w których mężczyzna jest podobny do Darcy’ego, to włącza nam się taka myśl, że jeśli ktoś jest dla nas wredny, to się zmieni, bo przecież Darcy się zmienił. To jest ciekawa teoria, ale znacznie lepiej wybrzmiałaby, gdyby autorka skupiła się nie na Darcym, ale na ludziach takich jak Darcy z początku książki. Bo Darcy nie był rozpustnikiem ani potworem, ale mnóstwo ludzi, którzy wydają się Darcym przy pierwszym spotkaniu, może okazać się rozpustnikiem i/lub potworem. Ciekawie jest spojrzeć na to, jak romantyzujemy pewne zachowania. Kolejny przykład, bardzo kontrowersyjny? Gilbert! Autorka o nim nie wspomina, ale Gil zaczepia Anię, obraża ją. Bo „kto się czubi, ten się lubi”. Jednak nie powiemy, że Gilbert był wrednym, przemocowym gnojkiem. Możemy jednak powiedzieć, że niektórzy chłopcy, którzy zachowują się podobnie, mogą się stać takimi gnojkami. Robienie z Darcy’ego złoczyńcy jest tak płytkim zabiegiem, że naprawdę niszczy całą książkę, której tematyka mogłaby być ciekawa. Wystarczyło skupić się na psychologicznym aspekcie człowieka, podając przykłady z literatury, zamiast podawać przykłady z literatury, twierdząc, że wszyscy ci bohaterowie są problematyczni. Bo w tym przypadku problemem nie był Darcy. Ani Austen. Problemem są ludzie, którzy intencjonalnie manipulują i krzywdzą innych. Darcy do nich nie należy, o czym autorka książki wydaje się nie wiedzieć.
Jedyne, co mi się podobało w tej książce? Krytyka Chucka Bassa. I hate him!!!! I znów, sądzę, że ulegamy tu temu myśleniu, że potwór może stać się dobry. Ale czy to ma coś wspólnego z Darcym? Raczej nie. Wychodzi więc, że książka podobałaby mi się znacznie bardziej, gdyby tytuł nie okazał się clickbaitem.
Zatrzymajmy się jeszcze przez chwilę na tych cytatach:
„Opiera się na fantazji o zakochaniu w Byronie”. „Nie jestem w tych tematach ekspertką, ale mam absolutną, niezachwianą pewność, że chodzi tu o s*ks z Byronem”. „Dwanaście historii, które tak naprawdę są o s*ksie z Byronem”.

Fajna rozprawa z mitem. I piszę to jako fan wszystkich filmowych i serialowych adaptacji powieści Jane Austen - ponieważ do jej powieści mam już większy dystans. Z racji stylu.

No dobra, mam problem z tą książką. Opieranie całej książki na Darcym i przedstawianie go jako jakiegoś dziwnego potwora, no nie, nie siedzi mi to dobrze. Szczególnie, że autorka stawia znak równości między nim, Connellem z Normalnych ludzi, Christianem Greyem, Chuckiem Bassem i Heathcliffem. Gryzie mnie to, bo i Darcy i Connell to bohaterowie, którzy pracowali nad sobą i widzieli gdzie leżał problem, natomiast cała reszta widziała tylko czubek swojego nosa.
No i wszystkie pytania, które autorka zadaje sama sobie pozostają tak na prawdę bez odpowiedzi, bo analiz jest tu mnóstwo, ale finalnie nic odkrywczego z nich nie wynika.

I am thoroughly disappointed in this book, for multiple reasons.
The theory that the title poses: I have a whole separate write up brewing for it. It's going to take me a while to write it and post it. It's not something that can be done quickly because I want it to be concise and make a point without undue repetition. Plus, the book gave me SO MUCH material to waffle on about. But ultimately, to blame a fictional book for our behaviour in the real world is preposterous. It implies that women read a 19th Century romance novel and then expect real life to behave the same way, today. The way our lives go has nothing to do with books or expectations set in fiction (let me repeat that: fiction). We have our own brains that we need to use to deal with reality. We choose for ourselves, let's stop blaming literature. You end up in a bad relationship, don't blame Darcy, he didn't decide for you.
The examples through which Feder analyzes the hardships of love (or, horror and terror of love as author says) for women are from Pride and Prejudice (book), Bridgerton (TV Show), Gossip Girl (TV Show), Twilight(book) and Taylor Swift song lyrics. The scene Feder brought as an example from Twilight was so over analyzed I could not help but think about that example which goes along the lines of: 'sometimes blue curtains are just blue curtains'.
Would I recommend this book to others? Sure, if you're young and exploring the world. I firmly believe in looking at things from every possible angle so one can make their own informed decisions and take a stance on something.
Was the writing good? Yeah, I mean, Feder made her point. But, personally and as an example, I disliked how an English professor decided to 'level' with the cool kids and use terms like 'fuccboi'. The language used can be a massive factor in credibility for a wider audience. For me, the 'leveling' discounted much of the theory. There's no need to make discounts on language itself to level with the readers. It just made me stop in my tracks, it was unexpected and I'm not novice to a good session of swear words. But everything has it's own place and time. And maybe I am not the intended audience for the book. I don't listen to Taylor Swift either.
Additionally, there was a section that brought real life examples of relationships gone bad. The real life Darcy's. I don't mean disrespect toward anyone's real life feelings, but you give me a one-sided relationship story and I immediately take it with a pinch of salt. Yes, I believe there are bad people out there. I do. But if you're only presenting the woman as the victim and the male as the bad, I think of it as skewed. Last I checked, it takes 2 to tango. Last I checked, every situation has 2 sides. And if only 1 side tells their story, I believe only half of it. If you're a female, it does not make you innocent and 'do no wrong' by default'. It's good enough for gossip, it's not good enough to make a point. And herein lies my issue - perhaps I was expecting a more serious, a more academic take on this theory. To me, this is not it.
But what really pissed me off? To the point of hissing out expletives? It was that Feder, an English professor, spoiled a classic title to drive home her point and then ask the reader not to read the title, and I quote, and obviously the book doesn't have spoiler tags which I have used below:
Excuse me, but what the hell?! This is not right. Not right at all. You can tell someone not to read The Monk, by all means... But don't spoil the book to those who haven't read it! Good grief!

Nie zgadzam się w pełni z autorką, wiele razy nawet nie do końca rozumiałam, gdzie widziała problem, ale uważam, że była to ciekawa książka, stymulująca do przemyśleń i do pochylenia się nad pewnymi modelami i schematami rządzącymi światem fikcji, ale też tym naszym, codziennym. Te rozważania i przemyślenie, do których mnie skłoniła autorka cenię chyba najbardziej z całej tej książki, chociaż trzeba też oddać pisarce, że była w stanie pisać w sposób zabawny, nie nużący, odwołując się nie tylko do klasycznych przykładów, ale też tych bliższych naszemu współczesnemu światu

Czyta się szybko i przyjemnie. Autorka używa odniesień do popkultury i potrafi być śmieszna. Mam natomiast poczucie, że wszystkie tezy i argumenty są pisane zbyt powierzchownie. W zasadzie wszystko jest pisane pod główną tezę przez co całościowo wygląda to trochę niewiarygodnie. Finalnie przemyślenia autorki skłaniają do własnych w temacie kreowania romantycznych wzorców w społeczeństwie. Dlatego też mimo wad zachęcam do zapoznania się z tą książką. 3.5/5

In a wildly off-brand act, I am going to give this book a sincere review because I know so many people who might be interested in reading it. This is some of the most approachable academic writing I have read in a long time. Feder asks you to think about big topics (like feminist theory I didn't encounter until grad school), in a ridiculously approachable way. There are some claims and arguments she makes that I dont totally buy, but that's the fun of reading academic writing! Engaging in a dialogue. 60% through the book I was worried she was going to lose me, but her last chapters on reproductive rights and community care really turned this book around for me. It won't be for everyone, but it was for me :)

i’ve been sitting with this review for a while, because i wanted to be as fair to this book as i could while acknowledging the fact that i walked into it disagreeing with Feder… and did not agree with her after finishing the book. while there are certainly elements of P&P, and Darcy in particular, that rub against our modern sensibilities, i think that describing him as a monster—and a monstrous type which has echoed through the ages—is unfair both to Darcy and go the concept of a monster. Darcy is imperfect, absolutely (and the implications of his actions on Lydia are concerning, though no more, not particularly more, than the entirety of her fate in that historical context), but to call him a monster both vilifies him further than the original text supports and waters down the concept of a monster in general.

It is so refreshing to be given a new perspective on the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Darcy has been a heartthrob since Pride and Prejudice first was published, but Rachel Feder challenges readers to look into why we so highly esteem this fictional character.
Darcy seems to feed into every common perception of what an ideal man would look like: elusive, has his own sad backstory, emotionally constipated, handsome, and above all, misunderstood. While her interpretations can veer into the slightly extreme (is Darcy a total monster because he funds Wickham and Lydia's marriage? He gave money to a rake and possible rapist so Wickham could marry a 15-year-old girl and maintain a respectable place in society and possibly continue to be a rake) one wonders if it is extreme enough.
We have idolized Darcy to the point that Feder's interpretations feel like sacrilege. Maybe Darcy isn't a monster, but is he only a good guy because he gets what he wants in the end? What makes him different from Henry Crawford from Mansfield Park?

Dla ludzi którzy czytali większość książek Austen i sióstr Bronte może pojawić się parę naprawdę fajnych ciekawostek i smaczków. Parę czyli może z 5 heh. Ale still, np to ze recenzje Emmy napisał Walter Scott, jakoś ciężko mi było w to uwierzyć. Dwa, teza jaką podejmuje autorka nie jest zła sama w sobie. This book had so much potential. I picked it up because the title and premise was intriguing: Mr Darcy, who we all love and know, is actually a monster in a gothic-inspired novel, and it is his fault that women fall for "bad boys", only to be disappointed or worse. Well, I can say that I went in with an open mind and was disappointed more by Rachel Feder's shoddy arguments than I have been by the "Darcy myth". Maybe that's because the myth has nothing to do with Darcy?
There is a romantic idea that a difficult partner can be "fixed" if only you ignore their red flags, a bad first impression, and love them anyway; but even though I just read a whole book about it, I still fail to see how the story of Darcy and Lizzy has set us up to invest in men who treat us poorly. Honestly, I think this argument is extremely condescending and lacks integrity.
For a start, Feder blatantly ignores the cultural and historical context of the novel. Casting Darcy in the most negative light possible, she repetitively gives the same one or two examples for why Darcy is a gothic "monster": Darcy's character and narrative provide "cover for predatory, toxic behavior" because he helps Wickham marry Lydia and therefore trapping her with a serial predator; and the fact that he kept the truth about Wickham's character quiet helped cause the scandal in the first place. For this, Darcy is a "cruel patriarchal enforcer".
I'm sure most people reading P&P are probably aware of the historical nuances here, but it doesn't seem fair to apply modern-day moral standards to a story from the early 19th century, condemn all the men in the story, and then tell us that the story has "trained" us think a certain way. To argue that THIS is the love story that has taught us accept bad treatment from men either shows an alarming lack of comprehension of the text, or Feder is interpreting the text in a deliberately inflammatory way to get sales on her book.
Either way, we're not that stupid!!!

Naprawdę rozumiem o co chodziło autorce. Jest wiele złych książek (np. Uwielbiam czytać wszelkie książki o książkach i analizy literackie przystępne zwykłej śmiertelniczce. I choć nie jestem super fanką Jane Austen i „Dumy i uprzedzenia”, a już na pewno nie pana Darcy’ego, to jak tylko dowiedziałam się o tej książce bardzo chciałam ją przeczytać.
A jest to pozycja analizująca jak postać Darcy’ego wpłynęła na kulturę i tym samym jak wpływała na odbiorczynie tej kultury. Rachel Feder stawia tezę, że nasze złe wybory związkowe i ignorowanie czerwonych flag to wina… Jane Austen i jej najbardziej znanemu męskiemu bohaterowi 🤔
I co ja o tym myślę? Mam wrażenie ogromnej nadinterpretacji autorki, a założenie, że postać literacka wpłynęła tak mocno na kolejne pokolenia kobiet (winy w naszych nietrafionych wyborach szukajmy jednak w innych traumach niż w czytaniu Austen :p) i umocniła patriarchat jest dla mnie mocno naciągane. Ale zgadzam się z tym, że postać Darcy’ego wpłynęła na całą masę innych tworów kultury popularnej i te rozważania autorki w większości przypadły mi do gustu i chciałabym ich wiecej.

I went into this with a very open mind- as someone who LOVES my Darcy, I understand that Jane Austen novels are a product of their time, and sometimes it can read a bit like horror (see: Emma being groomed, which btw, DIDNT EVEN GET DISCUSSED HERE!)
This just felt very reductive of Pride and Prejudice and meandered around pop culture and other Victorian era literature, tied together with Darcy themed "segments". I really enjoyed the discussions of Austen as gothic and other gothic literature, but I think this book would be more aptly named "The Byron Myth." (Seriously, she spends like a third of the book if not more talking about Byron and vampires.) The only reason Darcy's name is at the forefront of the pages is to be used as a gimmick, to draw readers in. She even says that this doesn't necessarily have to be tied to Darcy "but it may as well be" or something like that early on. Like????
She spends a whole chapter trying to compare Darcy to Heathcliff, but then they don't really have anything in common at all and she ends up comparing Heathcliff to Byron instead.
The book was engaging, sure, but it spurns a myth based on romance novels and enemies to lovers as a whole. Using Darcy as its base felt shallow, especially given lack of evidence. (Also it kind of read like a self help dating book at times.) The text regarding Darcy is hardly examined, and the only point she can lean on (and lean on it heavily, she does) is that Darcy was the force behind Lydia and Wickham's marriage. She argues over and over again that Darcy has sold Lydia off, etcetc. This could be interesting to discuss, sure, but she never broaches the historical context despite railing on this sooo much. Is it because it's not convenient?
All that being said, I do think that it is interesting to examine how our romance stories are shaped by the society we live in and how it perpetuates the patriarchy. I just think Mr. Darcy hardly fits any of the notions that are being put onto him- he is a little rude once and other than that he is just an awkward man lol
In conclusion, the Darcy Myth is a straw man and Colin Firth should exclusively wear wet, white shirts with mutton chops. Thank you.
I went into this with a very open mind- as someone who LOVES my Darcy, I understand that Jane Austen novels are a product of their time, and sometimes it can read a bit like horror (see: Emma being groomed, which btw, DIDNT EVEN GET DISCUSSED HERE!)
This just felt very reductive of Pride and Prejudice and meandered around pop culture and other Victorian era literature, tied together with Darcy themed "segments". The Darcy Myth was a thoughtful and entertaining read that considered the darker side behind the brooding hero archetype. I didn't necessarily agree in full with all Feder espoused in the book, but my thoughts did click with hers on some points and it was interesting to read her arguments. Certain parts of the book were more fun for me than others. For instance, I did skim through the section on The Bachelor, because I hate reality TV, so the people she referenced in relation to that show meant nothing to me. But I enjoyed the discussion on Lord Byron and vampires and the look back at the Gothic influences in Austen's works. In general, fans of Jane Austen should find this an interesting read, and I am giving it 4 stars.
