Valor and Doyle Mysteries #6

Disrupted Engagement

Rate this book
The ring has been bought, and all Aslan has to do is create the perfect setup for a proposal. No problem. Nothing to it. Quaid deserves the best, and he plans to deliver.

After choreographing a romantic evening to officially pop the question, Aslan is ready.

But things don’t go as planned, and the evening is ruined. Quaid’s insecurities rear their ugly head, making him suspicious. He knows Aslan is hiding something, but pessimism insists it isn’t a good thing.

When Aslan gets called out of town to hunt down a long-acting serial killer, there is no time to soothe his over-anxious boyfriend’s worries or make a new attempt to propose.

Torn between a complicated case and figuring out the perfect way to ask Quaid to marry him, Aslan is left scrambling. Every idea falls flat. Every scrambling attempt fails. The more pressure he puts on himself, the more unsuccessful his efforts, and Quaid’s fears grow.

Aslan needs to solve this serial killer case and get home to straighten the mess he’s made.

Disrupted Engagement is the sixth book in the Valor and Doyle mystery series. It is a same-couple series and should be read in order. Although each book has a self-contained mystery with no cliff-hangers, the romance is overarching.

I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.

I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper.
I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.

Another book in the series I thoroughly enjoyed. The mystery was pretty good. Again, whatever crossed my mind was completely wrong. Though I have to say that it felt like the mystery took the backseat in this one. Or maybe it's just me being so invested in Quaid and Aslan's private lives. 😂

As for their relationship,

A few more things that made me happy in this one:
- Aslan and Torin working on a case again
- banter with Ruiz and Torin
- Quaid's relationship with his dad
- Quaid being super adorable with Oscar. 🥰

Nick J. Russo's narration was amazing, as always.

God! I don’t know who I suffered more with through the whole failed attempts of proposing. With Quaid conjuring up all these worst case scenarios in his head about what Az is hiding from him due to all his insecurities or Az being a nervous wrack about not getting it done right and seeing Quaid freak but also not wanting to pop the question without it being special. My heart went out to the both them.

“Are you for real? Getting married is a wet dream for him. He ain’t gonna say no. You could walk over to MPU right now, sit on the edge of his desk, and say, ‘I think we should get hitched at the justice of the peace after work,’ and he’d melt into a puddle of goo.”

Honestly, I was pretty impressed with how good Torin knew Quaid and was way ahead of Az in his assessments of the situation.

I also loved how Nicky found a new way again make Az and Quaid work together on the case once again. I always loved to see that, esp with Torin thrown into the mix.

The mystery part of the book about the serial killer was engaging if not super thrilling but I liked that the focus of this book was more on the romance part and the relationship between Az and Quaid. And ofc I loved that it had quite the hotness to it once again.

I loved to see Quaid’s dad again. We already wondered where he’d been since he was not mentioned since book 3 where everything with Quaid’s missing sister came to a close. But what a comeback it was for Abraham. I laughed my ass off!! Az promising Quaid sexual favors on speakerphone not knowing Abe’s in the background or Quaid giving him instructions on how to care for their cat while they’re away. IT WAS HILARIOUS.

Overall a fab addition to the series. Can’t wait to see them get hitched in the next one. *swoon

Second reading 11/2025
Reread as an audiobook. Let it to Quaid and Aslan to get me out of my slump, hopefully.
Those two... it was just as painful and amusing the second time around as it was the first.

First reading 09/2024
Oh dear, poor baby Aslan and the search for the perfect moment. It was painful to watch. And I have to say, this proposal is probably the strangest one I've read about so far. But oh my god was it also amusing. And I want to hug Quaid so badly and never let go, just like Aslan.
The case that Aslan and Torin are working on here is equally strange. And no, I didn't see the solution coming. I had a tiny hunch, but I didn't want to trust it and had my sights set on someone else.
Regardless of that, the case is again more of an accessory and doesn't take up too much space. Aslan's and Quaid's relationship development is so much better than anything I've read before. And I'm not normally a big fan of established couples, so it's a tiny miracle that these two can entertain me so well.
Here are a few tidbits.

I ghosted a featherlike touch up and down his shaft, watching for a response. His eyelids fluttered and pupils dilated.
“What fantasy is that?”
“You at ninety-seven with no teeth sucking my cock.” I dropped my head on his shoulder and laughed.
😏🫣

I got naked, and Quaid watched the show, a drug sheen covering the surface of his baby blues. When he stared too long at my half-engorged cock and smacked his lips, I knocked two fingers under his chin, forcing his attention back up.
I gave him my stern cop face. “Forget it.”
He pouted. Quaid, Mr. Prim and Proper and Perfect, fucking pouted.
“No.”
He pouted harder, batting his lashes. I took his chin and gave his head a gentle shake. “Stop it. You’re injured and doped up. We can have all the sex you want when your head is clearer.”
“You’re no fun.”
“Boohoo.”
😏🤭

So, now comes the most difficult part, because weddings are not my thing at all, I'm curious to see if the last book can impress me as well.

I seriously cannot get enough of these two! Aslan and Quaid are absolutely perfect for each other. I did have a few eye rolls (more with Quaid) when poor Aslan was trying to setup the perfect proposal and poor Quaid was all up in his head thinking the worst case scenario. Then again, Aslan should know by now how anxious Quaid can get.

As far as the mystery part of the story was a serial killer spanning decades. It was a tough one for sure, but I’m proud of myself for figuring it fairly early.

The banter between the gang is still there, especially between Ruiz and Quaid. A big turn- around from the beginning of the series.

One more to go, but I am definitely not ready to say goodbye to these two.

I am VERY, very conflicted about the rating.

On the one hand, "Disrupted Engagement" was a fun, enjoyable ride: a classic Aslan and Quaid adventure, full of mystery, steam, heartfelt romance and banter. I've been highly invested in their relationship since their first book, and I adored seeing them reach this stage of their relationship: they belong together, and the sheer amount of love, respect and affection they have for one another left me misty-eyed more than once.

So, yes, their relationship was a definitive positive; and, of course, Aslan, my baby, I'll always love you. He can do no wrong in my eyes, even when he's being an idiot. The side characters were HUGELY enjoyable too: Torin, Ruiz even, and of course Jordyn (I desperately missed her though; I wish she had a much bigger role!)

On the other, I got kinda bored and frustrated at times: I ended up skimming some of the least interesting chapters, and I didn't find the engagement shenanigans cute or funny at all.
I don't mind the miscommunication trope, but I don't like it when it's done for no reason at all; I get why Aslan wanted to make the proposal perfect, and I get Quaid's insecurities (he's highly relatable in that regard!), but it just felt cruel after a bit, and I think it could have been handled in a different, more thoughtful way (and yes, a funnier way as well).

I wasn't keen on the mystery: it was fun and complex, no doubt, but after the emotional ride and upheaval of the last two books, I was expecting something more "more"? I don't know.
I wasn't keen on the writing: to be fair, Nicky James' writing wasn't my fave to begin with, but it felt especially bland and green here.

And finally, Quaid. Like I said, I understand why he's the way he is; I find his insecurities extremely relatable because I, too, am a neurotic, overthinking mess of anxiety and insecurity. But he desperately needs to go to therapy or at least, get some help: I've already said this, but his health and calories obsession, his constant fat-and-food shaming, the fact that he's so obsessive and the fact that he doesn't sleep nor eat enough, isn't a quirky personality trait, and I sincerely hope it all gets addressed sooner rather than later.

So yes, I did enjoy bits of this book, but not as much as I hoped and not as much as the previous books. "Disrupted Engagement" had so much potential, especially from an emotional and character growth point of view, but most of it felt kinda wasted.
I also know that a few-months-ago-Iz wouldn't have been so picky and fussy, but I feel like I've been in a reading slump for ages, I'm fed up with mediocre books, my brain's decided it only likes TV shows now (of the queer variety, preferably) (I've been on a constant GO/OFMD/WWDITS loop these past few weeks and I AM SOARING, and also suffering), so yes. *bangs head on the table*

I'm excited for book seven though! Wedding shenanigans are always so fun, and I hope NJ delivers.

I loved this!!!

I just want to wrap Quaid in a fluffy blanket and be his mental health support buddy. His flaws definitely make him feel like a real person for me, and I absolutely love him.

Aslan actually makes me facepalm in every book but he's so funny and endearing. I love the relationship between these two and I'm so excited for their wedding in the next book.

Costa Ruiz is by far one of my favourite side characters. I love how the friendship between him and Quaid has developed. I do have one gripe though and that's the dreaded Jagerbombs - it's like I could smell the alcohol 🤢

I also desperately want to see Quaid and Aslan as parents because their kitty cat lives like a king and I just need to see it transfer to a child too. I definitely see myself in Quaid's parenting style too so I would love to see them being dads.

Six books in and still going strong. The boys banter is top tier and the serial killer mystery kept me guessing. As is usually the case, I was wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️ I really liked how it all came to a head.

I’ve read a few reviews that didn’t like how Az dragged his heels with the proposal, but I have to say, I felt the exact opposite. I understood his quest for perfection - competing with Quaid’s fantasy heroes is no small feat 😅 It didn’t feel ooc and actually, it was Quaid’s insecurity and sometimes lack of trust in Az that was more annoying. I get why he is the way that he is, I really do, but Az reassured him more than once and I seriously had to question Quaid’s detecting skills 😂

Valor’s quirks, however, are mostly endearing; the care he extended to kitty kat Oscar had me laughing out loud. How good was it to see Abraham back on page 👍 I can also personally relate to the catastrophising, which I have to say was hilarious. I loved how Quaid took matters into his own hands. Handcuffs me likey 😏 That’s a Quaid I can seriously get behind!

NJ just has a way of making it all very believable though and the set-up culminated in my favourite scenes of the entire book. That being said, Az is still my main man!!! I love the way he loves and supports Quaid. I love his partnership with Torin. These two together are a riot!!! 🤣 Yet, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I would dearly love to see more of Az’s backstory/family, rather than being there to indulge Quaid. He gets more than his fair share of the limelight 😅

Despite my frustration with Quaid at times and Ruiz occasionally rubbing me up the wrong way, I loved being back with the boys again and am always left thirsty for more! Can’t wait for Matrimonial Merriment, which no doubt, will be my favourite holiday read of the year 🤞😄

I love this latest Doyle and Valor story!!!! This story was very personal and intense as Az attempts to romance/propose to Quaid in the most epic of ways only for it to combust many times. Eventually Az does succeed in his goal and in one of my favorite scenes between the two. It was heated, full of heart, and with a major humorous element.

These two are so perfect for one another, that I love seeing their relationship deepen and become something completely on another level. They are soul mates who understand and support one another in the best ways. Quaid's neurotic pessimism rears its ugly head in an intense way in this entry and Az being extremely patient and understanding does not begrudge his partner. Loved this story and anxiously await the next one!!!! I love a Christmas-themed event!!!

Aww, this scratched the itch, I really started to miss Quaid and Aslan. This is the first book in the series where the romance far overshadows the case, but I wasn't mad about it.

I'm not a fan of miscommunication, but this one was quite intentional so it wasn't annoying. It WAS frustrating but...in a nice way? I understood both Aslan's need to make the proposal perfect for Quaid, and Quaid's insecurities and anxiety making him a mess and fearing the worst. Aslan is an idiot but also a saint because it's really not easy being so genuinely understanding with someone struggling with self-worth and trust issues, and never taking it personally. My heart hurt for Quaid, but Az deserves a medal.

I never would've guessed a proposal scene would make me blink away tears, but damn. That was so sweet and heartbreaking AND heartwarming. I can't believe this is the same chauvinistic pig I disliked in the first book! It really makes me want to re-read the whole series.

Well...after the proposal was over and done with, my attention seriously lagged. The case wasn't strong enough and the only thing I waited for was Quaid asking Ruiz to be his best man (I love that guy, he steals every scene he appears in).

Also, I need to rant a bit, and this IS a spoiler. The second Quaid was alone investigating the old man, it was obvious what was going to happen and it irritated me because it was also incredibly stupid. Quaid, honey, could you perhaps NOT discuss a possible serial killer suspect in his own backyard in broad daylight? How about you at least go back to your car and get yourself secured inside, just to be sure?? How come these detectives have zero self-preservation instinct?? Fuck, that bit honestly made me facepalm hard.

Frankly...I don't know what to expect from the next book? Is it going to be a wedding-planning theme? I feel like maybe we're starting to lag a bit, plot-wise, and I really don't want to get bored with these two...

Edit Dammit it's been a year and a half, and I STILL haven't picked up the next book, and there's the last one coming up very soon 😭 Maybe I just need to admit to myself that even though I love the guys, I'm not that interested in a whole ass book about a wedding prep, and a parenthood... 💀

Books like these are the reason I read. I laughed, I swooned, and was frustrated and tense. It completely drew me in.

No idea how an author manages to write a series like this one, and then other books that are just meh for me. But with Quaid Valor and Aslan Doyle she definitely created one of the realest couples I’ve ever read about.

Both are flawed - Aslan with his history of being an alcoholic, and his PTSD after having had to shoot a child (who was a murderer and was about to kill somebody, but was a child nevertheless). And Quaid with his deep insecurities when it comes to self worth, who obsesses about food and who would probably have an eating disorder if Aslan wouldn’t look after him.

Sounds less than thrilling if you don’t “know” them, but trust me, it is. Because the one constant in their lives is their love and their support for each other, and this love is so beautiful, that you as a reader want to bask in it, and you’re grateful to have it in your life, even if it’s only by proxy.

Every book of this series ends on a happy note, and this one is no different: throughout the entire first half of the book, Aslan (who never before Quaid was one to commit himself to another person) tries (and botches) to propose to Quaid. And while every other man would see why Aslan is so nervous in romantic settings (like a fancy restaurant, or fireworks), Quaid is too insecure for that and works himself up because he suspects that Aslan has some terrible news for him.

The proposal itself was so… them 🥰 I swooned and might even shed a tear or two, because for me, it was perfect.

Special mention to Ruiz, whom I love more in every book 😂

There’s a murder mystery again, too, and while in other books, I barely managed to solve it before the showdown, I actually paid attention for once and got a hint relatively early on, which made me want to crawl inside the book and point it out to them. But overall I was happy that we had the focus on their relationship in this book, so I didn’t mind too much that I found it out prematurely.

As for the narration - it’s Nick J. Russo at his best, hands down.

4.5 stars (because of the “easy” murder mystery), gladly rounded up to sparkly 5 stars.

Can’t wait for the wedding!

After the last book, reading this one was hard!

I have always read this book for my love of Aslan and Quaid, the mysteries are not what I focuse on because I always feel like they need work, well, I can say for sure that I read this one because of Aslan and that's sad.

Quaid really, REALLY bothered me in this one. He was a hot mess, and yeah, Aslan was keeping a secret, but I think the author blew the whole thing out of proportion.

First of all, it's disturbing how, after all of this erratic behavior, both of them are just like: well, he loves me with this shit, so I won't bother to try and get help, oh and let's get married... Toxic! Aslan did therapy, he has a sponsor, but Quaid can't go for his insecurities and toxic shit?!!! Doesn't seem fair to me, and in the long run, if Aslan were real, no matter how much he loves him, it will wear him out.

Second! Can Quaid stop with the food bullshit? If Aslan were a woman and if this book was the real world, he would develop some kind of disorder. It's incredible how Aslan, every time he eats, has to hear bullshit from Quaid, I know they take it as a joke, but is every single FUCKING meal!!!! I like food, so I don't appreciate his bitching about it.

Third! The stupid proposal. Aslan, you don't know your man? REALLY????! SERIOUSLY?!!! NAH! He knows his man. The author just had to fill gaps instead of doing a shorter book. Seriously, when I read: sorry, I'm afraid of fireworks since I was a child, oh, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHY??? I thought the author ran out of ideas to stretch this. It was ridiculous, at first ok fun, but there was a point were I had enough of it.

And what I find incredible is that they both knew what was happening. Aslan knew that he was making him nervous, and Quaid knew that he was acting out, but no one acted sane, and no one talked of therapy.

Bitch, no! Get help, Quaid seems so selfish it bothers me, cause my favorite is Aslan coño!

Fourth, what an anticlimactic serial killer. And what's with kids and old dudes being the bad guys? It's ridiculous. Yeah, he killed since he was young, but he still killed in his 80 or 70, girlllll hell no!

Nope!

The mystery part of this book should’ve had me giving it 5 stars but I was a bit letdown with who did it. I don’t know why but I felt like there was so much buildup that went nowhere.

This book was more about the relationship and how Quaid is still so unsure that anyone could completely love him. Aslan has grown immensely from the immature guy in the prequel. I had actually started the audiobook for book 1 and I was cringing at how unprofessional he was and thinking that he needed to be reported to HR. I am glad that nonsense went away even though Quaid “flirting” with Ruiz skirts the line a tiny bit. But their friendship is cute and not a main focus.

I didn’t mind the interruptions when Aslan kept trying to propose but I do think that will make a lot of readers annoyed. Quaid should fully trust Aslan by now but insecurities run deep and unless you’ve been hurt like Quaid has it is hard to understand his feelings.

This was not my favorite of the series but I did still love a lot about it. Quaid and Aslan are adorable together and I can’t wait for their wedding!

[3.4] i’m just a bundle of conflict with my ratings lately, but i blame it entirely on real life being a butt nugget (top-tier insult, i know) and forbidding me from consuming stories in just a few sittings.

i absolutely loved the Big Event in the title - it was played out in such a characteristically Valor & Doyle way that had the whole gamut of emotions flipping through my body with every other paragraph. they’re too precious, and i’d offer more terms but everything feels spoiler-y so i’ll refrain 😉

but the one thing i will say is, the back-and-forth in the first half was drawn out a good two yards past my personal patience gauge. the last book’s ily conundrum, while ostensibly ridiculous, was something i could personally connect to coming from a culture where love is expressed through home-cooked meals and fresh fruit cut and delivered to my desk as i’m slaving over work, incessant but equally concerned scolding to wear more layers and socks, and acts of sacrifice - *never* through words. at least my feelings were more spread out between the two characters, but seriously, Aslan? let me shake him like a maraca. this time it did feel ooc that he let poor Quaid steam so long in escalating doom scenarios, but that’s just my take on the sitch. ymmv but be prepared to make some concessions for sanity’s sake!

Quaid is a hot mess. He ruined Aslan's surprise (to be fair, Aslan should have known not to draw out the suspense).

He's also orthorexic. Stressing about healthy food choices to such a degree isn't a quirk. It's an eating disorder. The man doesn't need to be coddled; he needs help.

Ah, well, he's Aslan's problem.

This series is addictive. I've enjoyed every mystery, although Quaid standing within hearing distance of the serial killer's house and loudly explaining his theory to Aslan and Torin over the phone was beyond ridiculous.

Quaid is supposed to be smart, so I found it difficult to believe he'd do something that stupid.

So I still love these doofuses but I could not stand Aslan’s dithering over proposing. I was just about ready to tear my hair out! And poor poor Quaid was such a massive ball of anxiety throughout. But aside from that, I still loved seeing these two together and am looking forward to reading the next book. While the mystery started with a bang, the ending was a bit of an anticlimax.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

At that moment, I didn’t care how needy it looked, I collapsed in his arms, and my topsy-turvy world righted itself. All the anxious thoughts that had taken up residence in my brain without permission vanished. The constantly moving negative energy swirling around my daily life, causing chaos and distortion, settled. Aslan centered me like no one else had ever been able to do. I closed my eyes and absorbed the sensation of his tender, loving arms surrounding me.

Okay. So. 6 books in and I finally cried like a baby. If you’ve read this book you likely know which part got me. I wasn’t excited about going back to more relationship angst, but it ended up being one of my favorites in the series. The touch of angst made things interesting, and I thought the murder mystery was way more exciting and intriguing than the case they solved in book 5.

I love Quaid a lot. Like so much. He’s one of my favorite book characters ever, probably. So it goes without saying that he can do no wrong in my eyes, and whenever there’s a problem, I take Quaid’s side in the fight, lol. Aslan really has had some great character development throughout the series, but sometimes… My god, he goes from a 43 year old intelligent homicide detective to a blob of goo with zero emotional intelligence.

I loved him to death, but some days, I wished he wasn’t so overanxious and prone to vulnerable moments like this.

Like, what do you mean?? Of fucking course he’s anxious and vulnerable, you just lied to his face! You’re literally the problem here! 😣 I do love Aslan too, but my god he’s an absolute wet rag sometimes.

Anyway. I cried a lot. Actually laughed out loud when Quaid’s dad overheard Aslan on the phone tell Quaid he’d tongue fuck his ass. Got super excited by some mortal peril. Happy tears, too. Book 7 might wreck me. I hope it does.

I showed him how much I loved him, hoping it would be enough to sustain us, praying he wouldn’t one day get bored and leave. It was my greatest fear.

Feelings update ⬇️

Aslan: already mentioned, but what an idiot. It’s like he suddenly forgot every single thing he knows about Quaid. Thankfully we know he’s not mean or cruel, because I’d cross worlds to kick him in the shin for what he put Quaid through
Quaid: perfect, perfect bebe. The best cat dad. Endearingly neurotic and just about double the intelligence of every other character in the series
Torin: started the book loving him and ended it thinking he’s the biggest idiot around, which is impressive with Aslan in the fold. Quaid asked Torin how he’s even a detective, and I have to agree
Quaid’s dad: not dead!

Extra note: I’m sad the awkward phone sex didn’t happen

“Are you for real? Getting married is a wet dream for him. He ain’t gonna say no. You could walk over to MPU right now, sit on the edge of his desk, and say, ‘I think we should get hitched at the justice of the peace after work,’ and he’d melt into a puddle of goo.”

“Motherfucker,” he muttered—not as quietly as he thought.
“How’s it going, son?” Dad called from the table, still snickering as he placed the pieces on the board.
“It’s… going,” Aslan said, the shame evident in his tone. “How’s the hearing, old man? Any chance of recent degeneration? You know, rotting ear canals? Clogged ducts? Senility? Anything like that?”
“Nope. Sharp as ever.”
“Wonderful.” Aslan sighed.

3.5 stars - This was definitely not my favorite of the series, but I'm so invested in all things Aslan and Quaid that there was very little chance I wouldn't enjoy this book to some extent. And I did. With some caveats.

I kind of wish the proposal mishaps would have leaned more towards humorous than traumatizing. It felt like Aslan, who had always been mindful of Quaid's insecurities, completely lost the plot. Every botched attempt made me sad because of what it was doing to Quaid's mental health. It was so strange that everyone seemed to understand that except for Aslan. In the end, I felt like Aslan did his best in an impossible situation, but Quaid deserved better.

I also found the mystery in this book a bit lackluster. When I saw that it was about a serial killer I got ten kinds of excited, but I knew who the murderer was waaaaay before the detectives did, and that never happens. I usually guess wrong a hundred times before clocking the criminal and it's always around the same time everyone else has figured it out, so it's not like I've gotten better at this.

Even with those gripes, I still had a good time reading this book. Nicky James is a fantastic author and it would take a lot to make me abandon Aslan and Quaid at this point. They are too sweet for words and I can't wait to boo hoo through their wedding. Also, I'd be remiss not to mention the star of the show, Costa Ruiz - overworked IT genius, family man, ex-jock/frat boy, Quaid's BFF (no qualifier necessary) and Every interaction with him in this book made me smile. He also managed to make me cry a little during a conversation about strippers, which is a first for me. I'm so glad we don't have to wait long for the next book and I hope it's not the last. Surely we'll get to see Quaid as a dad, right?

i literally screamed every time aslan tried to propose. i loved this so much.
(however i am terrified since the next one doesn’t have a mystery and i fear i might need it.)

taking off one stars for two reasons:
-this mystery wasn’t that exciting. not as spelled out as that other one, but also not that difficult to understand who it was. maybe i’m understanding the author’s mind too much.
-i genuinely can’t believe that health nut, disordered eater quaid drinks alcohol. the man refuses to eat pretty much everything because it’s bad for you. i just know he would have an aneurysm even in alcohol’s close proximity. (and yes, i know he has some qualms with alcohol, but that’s because of aslan)

I wish I’d had the time to review this book before reading the following one because the main thing I wanted to say about it is in direct contrast with my reaction to Matrimonial Merriment, but here we are, so…

Once again, this couple of characters surprised me with their ability to make me like narrative choices that I usually find annoying and frustrating. Take Aslan’s
While I was reading the whole thing, I noticed that I was enjoying the exact things that would’ve usually driven me up the wall. I love when that happens. 😊
I also appreciated the mystery part of the story, , and Torin and Ruiz’s roles in the whole

I'm so TORN! It's hard to wait for this book's release after binge-reading the other 5 books and I'm sad that it wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. 💔

Overall, I liked and enjoyed this book enough but I didn't love it as much as the others. I think the long wait contributed to my disappointment and it's just a ME problem. 😭 I still look forward to the wedding, though, and the potential of them having kids and expanding their family. 🥰

I’ll admit that after having read book 5 in this series, which was the one
I enjoyed least, I became a bit hesitant for this one. Of course Nicky James is a quality writer, she’s one of the best in the mm romance genre, to my opinion. But the 5th book seemed to lack the attention and enthusiasm it deserved and what I’m used to getting while reading a book written by Nicky. To me it felt a bit like a book written because readers wanted a new Valor&Doyle book as soon as possible, and I think it was an excellent idea of the author to take a break and write something else instead. Because when she got around to write this 6th book, it turned out to be one of my favorites in this series. It felt like Quaid and Aslan were back to being themselves again- the banter, the fun, Quaid’s insecurities and Aslan trying to take them away. Abraham, Quaid’s father, was present again too, and that was a treat on its own.
It was quite an emotional read as well, got me all teary eyed at several moments, but it was funny too. And the mystery was so good! It kept me constantly on the edge of my seat and I didn’t guess the bad guy almost until the end of the story. It was very well done!
All in all this new addition to the series is one that makes me look forward to the next book.

I loved being back with these two

Another cracking good suspense story with another murder mystery I failed to guess properly so that makes me very happy.

What didn't was poor Quaid and his insecurity. I just want to wrap him in the world's comfiest blanket and tell him things will be okay.

Because, after Aslan stopped mucking things up, they did get so much better and then Quaid's joy was a thing of beauty.

I adore this pair, they couldn't suit each other more if they tried.

Another awesome and compelling mystery solved. Six books in, and I still can't get enough of Quaid and Aslan! I hope this series never ends. I can't fully express all the feels I experienced from this book/ series, but I'm just so in love with it, and Aslan and Quaid. As well as all the side characters. The hilarious banter between everyone, the relationships evolving, and the cases they work are all spectacular! Nick J Russo is truly amazing in their performance and captures all the characters perfectly! I'm beyond excited for the next book!
