A Girl Called Brodie – Primrose Island Novellas
“Don’t make your home on Lonely Street, Brodie. Take it from me. It’s not a good address for a girl like you…”
Brodie McColl drives a vintage van all over the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, cutting old folks’ hair and spinning them tunes from her vinyl collection to remind them of the good old days, and their biggest, grandest, most swoon-worthy romances.
The thing is, Brodie herself is already well into her thirties – and she’s beginning to wonder if any romance at all is going to be on the cards for her. Like, ever.
And for the record? She’d be quite happy with a smallish, common-or-garden, every-day-beige kind of romance.
Because she gets it. She’s not the kind of girl – okay, woman – for whom big romance… big love… and all that swoon-worthy stuff… is ever going to happen.
I found Holly Wyld's books in a promotional newsletter I am subscribed to, and since I was already a Kindle Unlimited user, I decided to read all of her books in this series. I don't regret that decision.
I loved the cover design for each. I liked Holly's writing style - the use of italics and full stops in order to express the gravity or the surprise of the situation. It made the reading experience enhanced because I could "hear" the thoughts of the characters. It was immersive in that sense.
This particular story is about Brody who has spent all her childhood being tossed from one foster home to another, and is twistedly used to NOT putting down her roots anywhere, but also not finding love. She is adopted by a gang of four oldies in a senior-living facility, and they have taken it upon themselves to find her romance. Brodie is also made to stay in a cottage overlooking a lake, and has a neighbour who is single, but decidedly unavailable. They strike a friendship and then..... :)
The story felt believable enough, cute and not overdramatic. The chapters are short and fly fast. The characters are likeable too and keep appearing across the series. Brodie's character, her feeling unloved is relatable, and the story is short but I cried several times, because the writing conveyed her ache well.
I love the locales mentioned and have now added Scotland to my travel wishlist. Apart from that, the small community feel, the overcoming of personal obstacles in order to be open to a romantic interest and the non-romantic relationships that support the characters were all heartwarming.
This is a charming story about a woman whose older clients (that have become her makeshift family) decide to take her dating life into their own hands. They want her to live La Vie En Rose, so they set up dates for her in their small village and allow her to live at a cottage. She meets and become friends with the neighbor, Jamie, and she seems to have more fun with Jamie than any of her dates.
This novella made me both laugh out loud, and cry in different scenes. I found myself rooting for all the characters, and would welcome a chance to spend time with them again. A wonderful, charming tale, that I was able to read over the span of two lunch breaks and a bit of time after work. I highly recommend this for the warm and fuzzies!
This novella was cute. I honestly just needed something a bit short for once, as I’ve been reading, nothing but 600 page books I feel. I also wanted some thing upbeat and happy because everything else I’ve been reading is negative and heart wrenching. Even for a Novella, I feel this move just a tad fast for me, but got the job done.
I loved the first 2 books in the series but I couldn't get into this one, wasn't giving me the same cute cosy vibes as the others and the romance wasn't as good.
This was a short, rather sad read. The main character has never ever been in love, not even a heavy crush. Those around her want her to find that someone special. Not a push towards marriage, but dating someone special who would treat her right. This then becomes awkward dating in a small town.
