Deal Coin is dead. So is Tyson Gore -- the crypto company's rockstar CEO. Homeless addict Reggie Jones stands accused of his murder during a botched robbery in the heart of Salesforce Park. San Francisco Public Defenders Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez race against time to uncover the truth. From gleaming office towers to powerful venture capital firms on Sandhill Road to tawdry strip clubs catering to Silicon Valley's elite, they follow a trail of betrayal, greed, and corruption. DEAD COIN is a story of San Francisco. It’s a tale of hope and greed, innovation and speculation, progress and decline. It’s a story that’s still being written.
An intricate plot, engaging characters, powerful suspense, and a touch of humor are Sheldon Siegel’s hallmarks. In DEAD COIN , the fifteenth installment of his New York Times bestselling series, readers will discover once again why Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez are two of the most compelling characters in contemporary crime fiction.

I like the Daley/Rosie series a lot. The characters are great. You know what you are getting when you open one of the books and that is not a bad thing. Comfortable read and feel like you are just catching up with old friends.
Sections of this book were repetitive, if not the exact words or phrases, descriptions of events, characters of previous book. I’ve read the entire series and loved them all, but this book was stuck in a time warp with a different defendant with slightly different plot.
I love the series. I feel like I am reading about my own family. It is a good read and I found out about Cryptocurrency. I had heard a lot about it especially when it wet bust in November 2022 but I wasn't really aware of it. So thank you Sheldon for the mini-education.
I look forward to the next book in the series. Maybe Grace will have a child, Rosie and Mike will be grandparents, and Sylvia will be great-grandmother again.
Sheldon always gets to the heart of everyday problems and makes good reading time.
I have read all the Mike Daley stories. I keep coming back for the nostalgic look at San Francisco, the fast paced court procedurals and the characters. There is usually something current in the plot, as in this one with crypto.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series. Having lived in Northern California all my life, San Francisco was always “the city” and “The Chronicle”the paper of choice. One of my dearest friends was a lawyer and his son a judge. Each one of Sheldon Siegel’s fascinating books taught me a little moe about our legal system, San Francisco, and People of all kinds. Thank you to Sheldon Siegel! “Dead Coin” by Sheldon Siegel. #15. kdh
Another great thriller NY Sheldon Siegal. I can't wait to read another one of his books. I recommend this for everyone who enjoys legal thrillers. Its filled with interesting twists and turns
I just love this series and anxiously await each new book as it comes out. The characters and so interesting and I love this genre of a legal thriller. Mike Daley has taken on the case of a dead founder of a crypto company - his client is accused of murder, but there are several suspects as this man was on the verge of bankruptcy and his investors were going to lose millions. Mike pulls out all the stops to bring a satisfying conclusion to this case! Keep writing Sheldon Siegel!
Book #15 was mostly a cut-and-paste from book #14. Many of the Mike Daley books have some repetition because of the nature of dealing with the same personalities doing the same thing, but book #15 went over the top in repeating things. I returned to #14 to ensure I wasn't rereading the same book. The defendant and the crime were different but there was a lot of repetitive filler. Disappointing. It's time for the author to end the Daley/Fernandez series and start a new series.
4 solid stars for book 15 in an enjoyable legal series that I started reading 8 years ago when a friend lent me book 1 in the series. This series can be read as stand alones, but I have been reading them in order. Mike Daley is now the co-head of the Felony Division of the San Francisco Public Defender's Office. The book starts with Mike defending a client on a case which has only a minor connection to the main plot. Mike is then asked by his boss, Rosie Fernandez, also his ex-wife to take on a felony murder case because the other co-head of the Felony Division is pregnant with issues and must go on immediate maternity leave. Rolanda Fernandez is also Rosie's niece, and Mike's ex-niece. Reggie Jones has been sitting in jail for 6 months, and he is deathly afraid of getting Covid. The book takes place at the height of the Covid pandemic. Even though Mike has only a week to prepare for trial, Reggie demands an immediate trial. There is very little evidence to prove Reggie innocent. Mike calls on his brother Pete, a private investigator, to find something to prove Reggie innocent. By now I have come to expect certain things to happen in these books. But I can't post more w/o being a spoiler. I read this book in 2 days. This was a kindle unlimited book. Both my wife and I recommend these books. I like the realistic character descriptions and the plot progression. One quote from a toast by Mike at his daughter's wedding: "You want three things for your children. Be healthy. Be happy. Be safe."
Another good one. Only problem I had was how similar many parts of this book were to the previous (Double Jeopardy). Some of the same phrases and nearly entire paragraphs, however, it isn't as though being an attorney your different arguments won't be the same as the last.
A lot of good things happened for Mike, his friends and his family. The ending was great and everything came together as it should. It'd be neat if Mike and Rosie obtained a new employee (that person is a surprise, so you should read this book and find out for yourself). It is someone readers of this series know, so that'll make things interesting.
This is the last book, but hopefully another one is in the works by Siegel. The wrap up was great, but I was pretty saddened the story is over. Speaking of saddened, there's a part in this book about someone named Lucky that made me tear up - it was very touching. I believe what Mike believes, by the way about Lucky and where he is.
My next reading choice is by A.C.F. Bookens and the book is Scripted to Slay (St. Marin's Cozy Mystery #6). I've read the previous 5, but it has been awhile. I was excited to run across the next 3 in the series I have yet to read. ☺️
Well, another 9 books have passed since my last review of this series, and unfortunately, I have come to the end of the road. I'm sincerely hoping that there will be more, and feel that the ending intimates that there will be.
Each book is a different case, and I just love the dynamic between the characters. Mike is one of those lawyers, where if he feels that his client is innocent, he goes above and beyond to find something or someone to prove their innocence. With his PI brother Pete, they are an unstoppable force. I love the balance between professional and personal and really feel that the reader gets entrenched and becomes one them.
Homeless addict Reggie Jones stands accused of his murder during a botched robbery in the heart of Salesforce Park. San Francisco Public Defenders Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez race against time to uncover the truth in this 15th installment of their adventures.
From gleaming office towers to powerful venture capital firms on Sandhill Road to tawdry strip clubs catering to Silicon Valley's elite, they follow a trail of betrayal, greed, and corruption.
An intricate plot, engaging characters, powerful suspense, and a touch of humor are Sheldon Siegel’s hallmarks.
While Mike was arguing his case, I kept thinking of that old saying: "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS." Another great courtroom drama with Mike. Rosie seems to be on the sidelines in the last couple of books but Mike is right on target as usual. What a bogus idea to arrest someone because they found a wallet near the guy. We have the same base cast of characters and some new ones. A probable nice tidy ending and the innocent guy, hopefully, on tract for a better life. Politics in the DA office may add a new character to the PD office. We'll see.
Mike and Rosie are so good together. I thought at some point they would marry again, but on the other hand if its working let it be. The family dynamic is inspiring from both sides and I love the sense of humor they both have even when it is sarcastic. Mr. Siegel's writing draws me in; makes me feel I'm right there with the family, in court, just completely involved. I have loved these legal thrillers!! Ms T
I love this series and Sheldon Siegel’s writing. But this one was a bit off. It was nice catching up on Rosie, Mike,Pete, Sylvia,Tommy,Grace, and even Roosevelt. But the sizzle just wasn’t there this time. Maybe they were post COVID weary. Looking forward to the next one hoping it comes back.
Sheldon Siegel never disappoints. His Mike and Rosie series of books are full of engaging characters set in the San Francisco that few locals know about and visitors never see. I read this latest in the series in one sitting and look forward to the next one.
This book is a 4.25. I absolutely devour these novels when the next one in the series arrives. This is number 15 for the Daley and Fernandez books. Always a great plot/legal issue and a continued look at the two main characters’ relationship. This book centers around the world of cryptocurrency and homelessness in San Francisco. Of course-a murder is added. Definitely recommend it.
Another excellent read from Sheldon Siegel! If you like a good murder mystery you'll love Dead Coin and others in this series by this author. If you grew up in San Francisco or at all familiar with The City you'll love the way the author uses sites that bring back memories.
Love watching the family and the story in it’s totality evolve.
#15 Love the series. Not sure how long Sheldon will keep the series going but it is like your favorite pair of shoes or outfit. It is your go to books as it is so comfortable. Just love to see where Mike and Rosie go to next.
Getting back into these characters was easy. Love how all the old ones 'Nick' etc manage to get wound into the story. Easy read and like putting on a pair of old slippers. Also enjoy how the story progresses past the verdict. Think this is one of the very few books that mentioned Covid, which now seems like a distant memory.
As a criminal Defense defense attorney, I find Mr. Siegel’s work extremely realistic. He emphasizes that court work is theater. As a 43 year veteran of Court lawfare, I heartily agree. Ordering the next volume right now! Tom Marsilio, only living attorney to ever cross-examine a Saint in a US Court of Law (St. Teresa of Calcutta, 1991)
The outcome of the case in the center of the plot has been obvious from the first few pages. It paints SFPD and SF DA as totally incompetent too - nobody would go to trial in SF with a case this slim.
I have read every Mike and rosie book. In Sheldon thank you I hope that doesn't mean the end of these stories. You can always feel good about reading these stories. Not to gory and enertaining!
The author is good delivering a fun story to read His talent is creating the tales and excellent background for the characters The background of San Francisco makes the readers think that they live there too
