Wow, great artwork but not a whole lot happens in the second volume. I'm starting to get the sense that Tyler Crook doesn't have a whole lot to say in this series.

Howard and Lupe need to get rid of this magical sword. On a road trip they find themselves in a small American town which is getting attacked by a large wolf, the large wolf is protected by a small boy in a wolf mask. Lupe goes off to help while Howard is waiting for car repairs.

Basically just a pit-stop in the journey to get rid of the sword.

This was a decent story, but did nothing to really build to the world from the first book. I don’t know that I’ll be interested enough to continue with this series with further releases, though I do really enjoy the art, so maybe that’ll be the deciding factor when another one comes out.

It deserves those five stars for that bloody massacre. Does not matter to me that the story did not move forward much.

Howard and Lupe continue to evade the hellish forces hunting for Howard's mysterious and mystical blade, while Howard's former church initiates their own hunt for the sword. In "The Wolf Child", Lupe comes across a strange little kid who wears a wolf mask and seems to be in need of assistance. Following the found family theme from the first volume of The Lonesome Hunters, Lupe feels the need to make sure the wolf child is taken care of.

There's a lot of moving pieces in this volume, as we see various factions and new players coming into the action, but I did find the overly decompressed nature of this volume a fair bit annoying. Despite the substantial number of characters established in "The Wolf Child", there's very little development of the core plot. But Crook's artwork is still just as tremendous as it has been with the fantastic use of muddy and dark watercolors. The horror aspects of the book are really great, and the sparing use of violence really has impact. I'm enjoying Crook's solo take on the rural gothic horror tale and will continue to read on, but I do hope the following volume picks up a bit of the pace and we establish some greater stakes.

The Lonesome Hunters continues with the old man and the kid taking the magical sword across the country to some mysterious destination (). This volume is a bit of a pitstop as the kid encounters an injured werewolf and her child and demands that the old man help them.

There's a subplot with a band of church members who are on the hunt for the sword. And we encounter the local farmers who injured the werewolf. But mostly, this volume is a chance to learn a bit more about the sword and its dark energies.

The art and storytelling flow continue to be great. My main concern is I'll have forgotten all of this by the time the next volume comes around because these little glimpses of the story are so brief.

Probably a 3.5, but we're rounding down today.

Our heroes from the first series are on the run, and come across a strange child that needs help - but it's not for him, it's for his mom. Who is a giant wolf. As you do.

I thought we might get a bit more plot development here. The whole series takes place over like two days, and it's only been a little while since the last series ended. We don't find out much about the histories, and even Lupe doesn't get to do as much as she did in the last volume. Maybe there's a longer term plan here, but I'd have liked a little more substance.

Of course, without substances comes style, and Tyler Crook's art remains wonderful. His beautifully painted pages are well worth the price of admission.

The Lonesome Hunters- The Wolf Child. Tyler Crook.
2nd volume in this series. Supernatural yet grounded in humanity. Old man, young girl, on the run, ancient artifact. Epic entertaining read.
#1- "Like I said, we are all just trying to stay alive."
#2- "I have a hunch about where those wolfs are hiding."
#3- "Wasting your time reading about rocks!"
#4- "You are both kind. I hope you don't die."

The art and colours are really great. The story is fine to good. Has a couple of good emotional beats.
Unsure whether to buy the library edition now or not. This could be the ground floor of a Hellboy universe (with or without the spinoffs). It has a lot of promise.

I grabbed this off the shelf not knowing it was a vol 2.🙂‍↔️ But the story seems interesting enough and go back and read the first one, however, from the reviews it doesn’t seem to matter much.

Review is for the first two volumes read back to back

New issues can't come fast enough.

The story is gripping, the art intriguing, and the possibilities endless.

Fine story, beautiful art, hears rumble online that this will not be finished which is quite annoying (nothing to do with Crook, but rather because of the publisher...)

Not very much world building in this one. Our two main characters come across a kid that needs help along with his giant wolf mother. It's a strange, roadside attraction story that doesn't advance the story much at all. Crook, of course, makes it look great. But it does leave me wanting another story with more substance.
