Soul Ties: A Ghetto Love Story

Rate this book
Soul Ties is a story of love, loyalty, and betrayal. Will Chance and Nina be able to escape this web of deceit unscathed? Will their love be able to withstand yet another trying test, or will they watch everything they built crumble before them?

True love and loyalty are hard to come by. Chance McKnight and Nina Singleton have just that. Nina, a multifaceted beauty, and Chance, an ambitious hustler, are two lovers from Charlotte, North Carolina, whose souls aligned at a young age. Together, the couple amassed $5 million of dirty money over the years and finally set their sights on beginning a new life in Atlanta.

On the day of their move, the couple is ambushed by a foe from their past. Dire circumstances compel Nina to start a new life in Atlanta without Chance by her side. Nina meets a mysteriously handsome stranger, Yasin, who quickly takes an interest in her. A few months later, the same enemy from Nina's past threatens her life, and she is rescued by the person she least Chance.

Secrets and lies tear Nina and Chance apart yet again. Nina remains in Atlanta and begins a family of her own, while Chance sets up shop in Miami, where a bigger threat lurks. Years later, Nina shows up on Chance's doorstep with a secret that will not only reunite the two lovers but also put a target on their backs.

This book took me on a nostalgic journey back to my middle school days when I devoured stories like these. I stumbled across this book at my local library. After spotting the title, I couldn't shake off the nostalgia, eventually caving in and grabbing it before the library closed – a decision I don't regret.

It's a tale of hustlers, brimming with lust, toxic relationships, and unresolved trauma. Nina, the feisty bombshell, and Chance, the gritty hustler, are destined lovers whose journey tests their bond. However, as the story unfolds, their chemistry feels forced, especially after Chance's fake demise shattered their connection. Despite the author's intentions for a romantic reunion, the events leading to it – from false miscarriages to potential sibling revelations – felt contrived.

I found it challenging to root for Nina, lacking depth beyond her beauty and displaying wishy-washy loyalty. Her character flaws, including her inconsistency and tendency to tear down other women, left me wanting more. Even her entrepreneurial endeavors felt tacked on, barely explored until late in the story. Similarly, Chance's supposed brilliance and depth were mere mentions, never fully realized.

What kept me hooked was the story's pacing. It was fast and drama packed and I read the entire book in one sitting. Yet, the static character development disappointed me. Aside from Tiana's partial growth, no one truly evolved, despite facing significant challenges.

The book's most thought-provoking aspect was its portrayal of the allure of hustling, despite my personal disagreement with its culture.

Overall, it was a fun and entertaining read! I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 coffee cups. :)

soul ties was a great urban overall — right from the jump, you’re thrown into chaos and drama, and it stays steady all the way through. i’ll admit, i wish some of the characters moved smarter, but that messiness is what made the story entertaining. nina and chance’s love felt real and complex, even when it was frustrating. and while i’m not the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope, it definitely kept the tension high and the pages turning.

chance’s infidelity (if you can even call it that, since they were technically on a break 👀) shaped a lot of the conflict. the book also touched on loss and redemption in a way that added emotional depth, especially surrounding the miscarriage moment. i also appreciated the intentional diversity in the cast — even the portrayal of the cops as yt added to the realism of the story’s environment.

somewhere in there, nina’s son went from nasim → nasir → nasim again, which made me laugh out loud 😂 and that cliffhanger? WILD. i’m a little mad book two isn’t out yet, because the way this ended… i don’t want to forget the storyline so soon 😤

pacing-wise, it’s a medium-paced, drama-filled mix of plot and character focus. the tension around chance not handling the nino situation the first time had me side-eyeing him — because had he done what needed to be done, they might not have been in this mess at all 😭

if you’re in the mood for a ghetto love story that mixes loyalty, betrayal, and generational mess, soul ties will give you just that — with a side of frustration and a whole lot of curiosity for what’s next

Twists and Turns

I am just Luke warm about Nina. Sometimes she appears whiny. She's ready to fight sometime and at other times, she appears innocent and in need of protection. Story slows at certain intervals. Drama rises near the end.
