Wild and ridiculous fun in a serious, high-stakes story following up the original Metal story. It’s been a few years since this story came out and it’s always been on my radar, but I was waiting for the omnibus to come out to read all together. Almost from the beginning I was brought back into this Metal world and I was enjoying every panel. Throwing elements from Watchmen into a story really boosts a book for me just out of sheer fanboy-ish excitement and love for that story. Along with that, there is so much cleverness utilized when it comes to altering slightly so many characters and aspects of the DC Universe and putting them in this story. I really enjoyed the deeper dives into some of the less popular DC characters through some of the one-shots in this one. Overall, a pretty solid, metal read.

A fun ride from start to end, this really feels like an amalgamation of all the crisis events that have ever happened all culminated in a final major, all out war, event. (Though we already have had another crisis event so scratch that thought out). This book feels like if DC had an endgame this would be it, just an all out war on a cosmic scale with everyone fighting to survive, and I mean everyone. Love the inclusion of lesser known character and the one shots spread throughout add depth to the story and backstory that flesh out our heroes and even villains. This story feels like it’s takes everything that started with Rebirth way back when and gives it a solid book end (even though in the comic space we know nothing ever truly ends). I can see how others would find it easy to get confused and definitely wouldn’t recommend it to newer comic readers, heck even I had some moments, but overall I found it a very interesting read and a nice bookend to all of rebirth for myself. Now to go read some simple low scale stories for myself for a bit.

A DC crisis event in disguise that ended Snyder’s reign not with a bang, but a whimper. Shallow, quite boring, and full of bad characterizations, it tries to prove its legitimacy by citing previous events and aping Morrison’s nonlinear narration style and concepts. The problem is that it only gets confusing and void of the Scottish author’s highbrow ventures, stretching too long without a real reason. The good aspects? The gorgeous art from people like Capullo, Hitch, Russo, and others, an end to Superboy Prime’s story (we can only hope) and especially the end of the overhyped, ill-conceived, stupid concept called The Batman Who Laughs (may everyone forget about him forever). Of course it was meant to put an end to DC’s constant reboots, but as of now we already have had another crisis event, so we know better.

This was a ton of fun! I really enjoyed the issues during the “calm before the storm” moments of the last few issues of death metal which contained plenty of character moments. The secret origin of super boy prime stood out for me.
