Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back

Rate this book
What is common between the censorship of the film Padmaavat and artificially high 'minimum' support prices for crops? If the police comes down so heavily on peaceful anti-CAA protestors, why did it not show the same harshness towards those violating the COVID-19 lockdown? Why is an otherwise powerful Election Commission unable to enforce free and fair elections within political parties or fully weed out criminals from politics?

The common factor is faulty institutional design, which is eating away at the foundations of our society. Leaders come and go, but institutions stay forever. Only a consistent focus on better institutions can help India have a more robust economy, media, police, parliament, internet and cultural life. Yet, discussions on institutions have been restricted to academic circles.

Keeping aside ideological biases of Left or Right, Caged Tiger brings alive the rich yet unseen story of India's institutions. It combines deep research and complex frameworks, converting them into the vocabulary and cultural context of millennials and Gen Z. It goes all the way back to the British Raj, exploring the origins of modern Indian institutions. Tracing additions by subsequent governments, from Nehru's to Modi's, it identifies policies that keep Indians suppressed and how each of us can change them. It is, in short, young India's guide to becoming smarter about the issues that matter.

Lacks quality writing and flow - one can easily tell this is an amateur writer. Also holes in some arguments particularly around why democratically elected governments should not have say in people's liberties - one of the reasons they are elected is to solve for the inability of the masses to self govern and so having certain restrictions is most beneficial (gun laws being a good example). However, some very powerful points are covered particularly need for independent judiciary and media

Another non-fiction that I picked up for this year. Caged Tiger is a book that talks about various government policies and author's views on those policies. Author expresses the negative and positive of the policies thus enforced. The book is well researched. I liked the references of the cases and citations made by the author to justify the claims made and the policies stated. There are relevant notifications stated with each context. Yes, there are points where one might disagree with author's opinion, but I would like to appreciate the fact that he dared to put out strong opinions (sometimes even against the governments). I would also like to put up that it is not against any particular government but this book discusses policies in general.

There are various policies like the data privacy policy which are discussed. I feel the need of this policy. I am of the opinion that the control should be there. Not all data can be exposed but yes the work of government is bound to be transparent. The use of RTI act should be encouraged and there should be proper disclosures, not just misleading and politically correct statement. Same goes for media houses. I agree with the point that media houses should be free but to what extend. I feel they must be free to show true and correct news and to bring out the truth through journalism but if we go for censoring the images and filtering out the abusive language then those censors should be there. We can bring out the truth in most civilized language as well.

So, for me this was an informative and well researched book. This book will definitely give you a food for thought. I took almost a month to read it because I felt the need to contemplate over things. This book is to be taken slow, maybe one chapter at a time. Consume it with patience. If you are a person looking for political - economical non fiction read, give this one a try.

Subhashish Bhadra with his profound research on the Indian economical situation and governance; through public, regulatory governance and digital rights policies; has written a book that explains governance, institutional design and its functioning in a language that is apt for our generation.
This book serves us, immaterial of our political inclination.
From the birth of our constitution to the present government, the author in his conceptual exquisite style, has meticulously done justice to the context surrounding the content.
The book is extremely engaging and thought provoking. It might resonate with our thoughts and opinions or perhaps they can negate each other, but it will indeed make us think, the thing we need the most.

" Caged Tiger " by Subhashish Bhadra is an insightful and well-researched book that sheds light on the problems facing Indian institutions and the hindrances they create for the people they are meant to serve.

The book is written on all the contemporary socio-political issues and using those real-life case studies the author has analysed the government actions. All the 9 chapters are equally significant and great however, the chapter " Cultural Revolution" make me think out of the box and really eye opening.

The simplicity of the language and the brilliance of the words show the expression of the novel ideas of the author. Moreover, the amount of knowledge that the author has to accumulate to write the book is clear in the author's pen. And I can say with confidence that you will not be disappointed if you read the book.

In conclusion, Caged Tiger is an excellent book that provides crucial insights into the problems facing Indian institutions and the role of citizens in institutional change. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in socio-economic-political changes and wants to make a positive impact on society. The author's writing style is engaging, and his analysis is well-researched, making the book an accessible and essential read for anyone interested in understanding the state of the Indian government.
Must recommend.

India's institutional design is like a grand tapestry woven with the threads of federalism, parliamentary democracy, and a written constitution. It is a remarkable system that holds the promise of delivering good governance, but it is also facing an arduous journey. The most stubborn obstacle on this journey is corruption, which has infiltrated every level of Indian politics and governance, corroded public trust and strangled the effectiveness of institutions. It is a frustrating hurdle for India's citizens who yearn for progress. But corruption is not the only challenge India's institutional design is up against. The country also grapples with social inequality and exclusion, sluggish economic reforms, and conflicts between central and state governments. These hurdles must be addressed with great urgency if India is to fulfill its potential as a modern, democratic state.

Caged Tiger by Subhashish Bhadra is a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of India's institutional design. The book identifies faulty institutional design as the common factor that plagues India's institutions and highlights the need for a consistent focus on building better institutions. Bhadra converts complex frameworks into relatable language that resonates with millennials and Gen Z. The book delves into the history of modern Indian institutions, identifies policies that keep Indians suppressed, and tackles contemporary issues such as artificially high minimum support prices for crops and the Election Commission's inability to enforce free and fair elections within political parties. The author shows how these issues are interconnected and symptomatic of India's larger institutional problems.

Caged Tiger by Subhashish Bhadra is a thoroughly researched and insightful analysis of India's institutional design. Bhadra's writing style is engaging and informative, making it an informative and thought-provoking read. The book emphasizes the importance of transparency in governance and highlights the need for effective policies to address the issues faced by the people. However, readers who are not familiar with India's economic and political landscape may find the book a bit dense and heavy. Nonetheless, what sets this book apart are the practical solutions the author provides. The author outlines four actions - Educate, Communicate, Agitate, Inculcate - that we can take to voice our opinions and work towards rebuilding India. The author's vision for the country is inspiring, and the solutions provided are realistic and practical.

This is not your typical book on India's institutional design. It is a ground-breaking work that dives deep into the challenges faced by India's institutions, providing well-researched insights and practical solutions. You will gain a fresh perspective on India's institutions and their impact on the country's political, economic, and cultural life. Whether you're an academic, a policymaker, or simply someone interested in learning more about India, this book is a must-read. It offers a unique and accessible analysis that will leave you with a greater understanding of India's institutional design and the challenges that lie ahead.

"Setting citizens free is the surest way to create a robust and strong nation."

India has come a long way from uprooting the British and establishing its complete independence. But in order to progress towards a brighter future, the country still needs to strive harder. India still needs something more to drive itself forward.

Author Subhashish Bhadra believes that it's a strong institutional design that is the need of the hour if India wants to aim for a robust nation. And that is exactly what he strives to explain in his book "Caged Tiger" which assures that good institutions is the only way to stop the foundations of our society from eroding away.

So, keeping aside all ideological biases, the book brings to life the rich yet unseen story of Indian institutions and how they can change the future of the country for the better. But most importantly, "Caged Tiger" throws light on how the Indians themselves can contribute heavily to bring the change that the country needs.

The book explores the fallacy in the Indian government from different aspects--economic, political, religious, social and cultural, urging the youths of the country to invest their thoughts in such matters and take the rights initiative to change it.

The book doesn't merely condemn the government for its faults, but simply puts forth certain flaws in the system and suggests how the people, the government and the institutions can join together to mitigate them.

"Good institutions are needed to keep the pillars of democratic life together."

Written in lucid language and imbued with appropriate examples, "Caged Tiger" showcases the author's vast knowledge and deep understanding of the concepts and issues that the book deals with. The writer's technique of making the commoners understand the complicated aspects or Indian government is truly commendable.

Highlighting both the positive and negative aspects of the Indian government, the book attempts to make one understand the need to set up good institutions that would suit the purpose of both the public and the government to ensure a corruption free progressive future for the country.

Tracing the psychology behind Indian mindset while responding to the hardships, struggles and predicaments faced by the country, the book endeavours to instill the mind of its readers with some new insights, imploring their hearts to strive relentlessly towards bringing a positive change for their beloved country.

What "Caged Tiger" wishes to imply is that India has the potential to be a Tiger but currently it's caged under the locks of its strict government. And as an Indian it's our duty to find the right keys to open the locks without breaking them and liberate the country so that it can finally be the free-spirited Tiger that it truly meant to be.

Written with the belief that every citizen of India holds within them the untapped potential to be the master of their own destiny, author Subhashish Bhadra in his "Caged Tiger" urges all the Indians to dive into the journey that holds the pen towards writing the country's future.

"Government will come and go, but governance and its structures will stay forever."

Since the time of the ancient Greeks, Democracy has evolved both as a theory and a governance model. From direct democracy to representative democracy, where the ultimate power now lies in the hands of public representatives. But how will the rights of citizens be safeguarded? That’s where the institutions play an important role. Democratic institutions are institutions that facilitate and promote the operations of democracy. From the Parliament to the Supreme Court to the Election commission, each institution has played a key role in nurturing our democracy. They are those institutions that make democracy work. When our forefathers had drafted a robust constitution, they had envisaged a balance between powers of the state and the rights of the citizens. But gradually, the rights of the citizens have eroded resulting in a more and more powerful state. Caged Tiger rightly points out the reason for this; lack of strong institutions and also offers a roadmap on how it can be rectified.

Caged Tiger by Subhashish Bhadra is an in-depth exploration of Indian democracy and Indian institutions pointing at the weaknesses and faulty design of our institutions. Divided in different chapters, The book focuses on the different spheres of governance, from the government's restrictive economic policies to its unbridled powers to conduct surveillance and crush dissent. It also covers what ails our police force, our parliament and our regulatory bodies. The book traces the history of every institution, how things started going wrong and how they can be fixed. The book combines deep knowledge of the subject matter combined with some extensive research of governance practices; both in India and abroad. It identifies the policies that have suppressed even the fundamental rights of the citizens and recognises how ineffective institutions are responsible for most of the problems plaguing our country today from corruption to social inequality.

The book avoids legal jargon and keeps the discourse simple and relatable so anyone can understand the problems and solutions put forth in the book. The book avoids taking sides between Left or Right but instead focusing solely on ideas. You may differ on some of the ideological positions of the author but you will agree on the broad point that our key institutions need an overhaul.

Bhadra's writing style attempts to educate and engage, focusing on ideas rather than ideologies and individuals making it highly informative. Citing real life examples, it examples how any arbitrary policy is potentially harmful and how it can be remedied. The book not only offers solutions but encourages the readers to Educate, Communicate, Agitate & Inculcate which I found both refreshing and practical.

Overall, Caged Tiger is an extensive and thoroughly researched book that explores the weakness of India’s institutions and offers a fresh perspective on how we strengthen our democracy. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in governance and making a contribution to strengthening Indian Democracy.

Subhashish Bhadra's well-researched and perceptive book, Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government is Holding Indians Back, examines the status of institutions in India and how they are holding the country back. The book makes intricate frameworks and in-depth research understandable to millennials and Generation Z.

I was quite interested in reading this book since I have a strong interest in politics and political institutions. It goes without saying that it was a success. The author is obviously well-educated and has a good understanding of and analysis of the present political situation. All of the arguments made have been thoroughly investigated and supported by fact. I was extremely moved by this book's insights and became much more concerned than before about the world I live in. Some of the stories in the book were quite depressing to read, especially when it came to subjects like sexual assault and baseless charges. I learned a lot about my country's political structure through this book, which was enlightening for me.

According to the author, most of our difficulties may be resolved by three crucial factors. First and foremost, we want clearly worded laws that are applied uniformly and openly. In order to guarantee that everyone is held responsible for their conduct, these regulations must also be transparently followed. Third, there should be impartial supervision to make sure the government is carrying out its mandate.

The book also emphasises how the Indian government frequently exhibits excessive ambition and is preoccupied with time-sensitive activities, which causes them to overlook routine components of governance like meeting basic requirements, preventing bribery, resolving famine issues, and undernutrition issues of the populace. It should be the goal to accomplish little but the best, according to the author.
Every person who has ever experienced defeat will find inspiration and hope in Tarun Raj Arora's outstanding book, Defeat. Tarun demonstrates to us via his personal experiences and the tales of twenty prosperous businesses that failure is not the end but rather the start of a fresh road to success.

The stories in this book are up-to-date and motivating, and they'll give you the hope and bravery you need to advance in life. The reader is fascinated from the beginning to the conclusion because to Tarun's motivating and captivating writing style.

Your anxieties, concerns, and unfavourable ideas can be banished with the use of the excellent resource, Across Defeat. You must read this if you want to succeed and lead a happy life.

Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government is Holding Indians Back by Subhashish Bhadra is a well-researched and insightful book that explores the state of institutions in India and how they are holding the country back. The book presents complex frameworks and deep research in a way that is accessible to millennials and Gen Z.

I agree with the author on several points, particularly in economics. The author believes in the free market and privatization policies, and I think the Farmer Laws 2021 were a brilliant move. The privatisation of the Air India airlines is also a good move, as it will help to improve the efficiency of the company and reduce the burden on taxpayers. The author's arguments for reducing government intervention in the economy are well-supported and make a lot of sense.

I have a different perspective than the author on the issue of surveillance. While the author argues against government surveillance, I am in favor of it to some extent. I believe that basic privacy is a right that everyone should have, but in today's world of heightened threats, government surveillance can help prevent terrorist attacks and other crimes by monitoring suspicious activities and identifying potential threats before they occur. Additionally, government surveillance can play a crucial role in protecting national security by monitoring foreign intelligence services and their activities, as well as identifying and prosecuting criminals by providing evidence of their activities. However, I agree that strict laws should be drafted to prevent the misuse of surveillance, which can result in violations of privacy rights and civil liberties.

One area where the author could have expanded on is the government's control over temples. The author argues that the government needs to loosen its control over institutions to help them thrive, but the author could have mentioned that religious places of other religions are already in private hands. The government's control over temples is an issue that needs to be addressed as well, as it affects the religious freedom of Hindus.

Overall, Caged Tiger is a book that offers a unique perspective on the state of institutions in India. It is well-written, thoroughly researched, and thought-provoking. The author's arguments are well-supported and make a lot of sense, although there are some areas where I disagree with the author. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the state of institutions in India and how they affect the country's development.

“Government that embody the true spirit of democracy are willing to question their very existence and often come out stronger as a result.”

India, with its diverse culture and robust network is one of the countries thriving to make it to the top but something keeping it behind. Although we've come a long way, some common factors like faulty institutional design is eating away at the foundation of our society. If looked deep into, the trace goes way back to the British Raj. The origin of colonial rules and subsequent formation of government based on ideologies originated from the then prevalent social and cultural mindset, that keep Indians suppressed. 'Caged Tiger' brings the rich narrative of India's institutions and how we can break free from it.

'Caged Tiger' is a nonfiction book that narrates the story of India's institutions and how too much government can be hazardous sometimes. If you are a person who believe nonfictions are boring then this book is here to prove you wrong. My reaction after reading this book was "we need more powerful books like this." This book meticulously describes the loopholes in our institutions and how that is hindering India's growth in every aspect. A well reasearched account of India's strategy that not only affected its past but continues to influence its present. The noteworthy point is the author's clarity of thought and unbiased judgement. He divised a wonderful technique to drive his point home with data and information without making it monotonous. The book itself is a collection of thoughts and dialogues combined with research is a unique testament to a different India quite different from mainstream POV. The author has selected some crucial areas of discussion which gets ignored by the mass. I like the framework of this book. Everything is laid down with methodical precision and goes like a story.

“Democracy is not merely about electing a government every five years and then giving it full freedom to rule the interim. It is about governments constantly seeking public opinion and creating policies in the best interest of the citizens.”

Writing style is great, like I said it flows like a story. Wonderfully planned out. The remarks are powerful. It's an important book if you want to educate yourself about your country. This book delivers a large part of the missing chunk of modern Indian history. Recommended to everyone.

Author- Subhashish Bhadra

My Rating-⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My Review-

"While the Indian youth is becoming increasingly restless, nearly two third of us still have either little or no interest in politics."

Anyone who is interested in knowing about our country will definitely pick this book just by seeing the cover page and the title itself speaks a lot about the book because we find a question that most Indians are eager to know… HOW TOO MUCH IS GOVERNMENT HOLDING INDIANS BACK..  And I must say that this book is something that every Indian must read…

When I read the blurb, I was fascinated by the information I'm going to learn from this book and to my expectations this book has so much to take away in 250 pages which is really fabulous and important information that every Indian should know.

There is no way to take this book as a light read, this book talks about a lot of serious things that need to be known, discussed and understood by the Indians and also the government to know its flaws and strengths that can change the future of India. This book speaks about the Indian institutions, its significance and history right from the British Raj and till now, the works of different governments after the independence, their policies and laws that influenced various institutions and a lot more.

This book takes time despite the reading speed we have as there is so much to take and so much to understand what the author wants us to know. This isn't fiction, everything the author discusses in this book are facts, researched information and solutions for the problems that can change the fate of India which takes time to get in our minds. This is a heavy read but also an impactful read for me.

I know there are many people who aren't interested in politics and may not show interest in the book and even I was less fascinated to learn about politics, but we still feel to learn about what is happening or has happened in our country and this book shows its views in an unbiased lens. This book is a vision for India's development which is also Indians development in the future.

I highly recommend this book for all my bookish friends despite your interest in politics and economics to give this book a try. Learning takes time and it's one of the best things we can do for ourselves. Happy Reading ❤️😊…

The book "Caged Tiger" by Subhashish Bhadra is an eye-opening account of the problems that plague India's governance system. The author makes a compelling argument that excessive governmental autocracy is holding Indians back and that blaming the government without addressing the deeper institutional issues is not helpful.

One of the most striking observations made by the author is that there is an absence of independent authority over governmental action in India. This lack of oversight means that the government enjoys far too much power without any real accountability. Moreover, the trust that we place in the government as elected representatives are often misplaced. We compare ourselves to our neighbors who are not at par with the basic standard and stick to the "chalta hai" attitude, which leads to complacency.

The author suggests that three key things can solve most of our problems. Firstly, we need tightly written laws that are enforced transparently and consistently. Secondly, there needs to be transparent adherence to these laws, which will ensure that everyone is held accountable for their actions. And thirdly, there should be independent oversight to ensure that the government is doing what it's supposed to be doing.

The book also highlights that the Indian government is often too ambitious and focused on time-bound tasks, which means that they ignore the everyday aspects of governance such as basic needs, stopping bribes, starvation problems, and undernourishment problems of people. The author argues that the aim should be to do little but the best.

Furthermore, the book also delves into why India has not progressed and why things fail to work in India. The author points out that finger-pointing between parties will have no fruit because the conditions prevail across all party lines and leaders.

Overall, "Caged Tiger" is a well-researched and thought-provoking book that offers valuable insights into the problems faced by India's governance system. The book is filled with several well-researched examples and references that make the arguments even more compelling. Anyone interested in understanding the challenges faced by India and how they can be addressed should read this book.

The book titled "Caged Tiger" by Subhashish Bhadra is an insightful book that explores the faulty institutional design of India's society. The book takes a deep dive into the origins of modern Indian institutions, tracing their evolution right from the British Raj to the present-day policies implemented by Nehru and Modi's governments respectively. The author identifies the policies that keep Indians suppressed and alternatively provides solutions for how each of us can change them.

One of the strengths of this book is its ability to convert complex frameworks and deep research that is aptly supported by excellent insights into the cultural context of millennials and Gen Z. The author's writing style is engaging and easy to understand, making it accessible to a wider audience. The book highlights the importance of focusing on better institutions, which can help India have a more robust economy, media, police, parliament, internet, and cultural life.

The author has also used some of the incidents from recent times such as the censorship of the film Padmaavat and artificially high 'minimum' support prices for crops, which are relatable to the everyday Indian. The book raises thought-provoking questions about why the police came down so heavily on the peaceful anti-CAA protestors but does not show the same harshness towards those who are blatantly violating the COVID-19 lockdown norms. The author highlights the importance of enforcing free and fair elections within political parties and fully weeding out criminals from the social fabric of politics.

Overall, "Caged Tiger" is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the faults in India's institutional design and how to contribute and move towards making a positive change. In a way, the book serves as a young and bright Indian’s guide to becoming more intelligent about the issues that are of relevance and pertinent matter. The author's objective approach, on top of his rich first-hand experience after having spent over half a decade in public policy space and then keeping aside the ideological biases of Left or Right, is commendable and makes this book a valuable contribution to the discourse on India's institutions.

"Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people".

The 16th president of the United States, Sir Abraham Lincoln, famously quoted this line in 1863. It has since become immemorial, immortalized through countless documents, textbooks, and discussions. It very well is true. The institutions of the government created, amended, and protected to serve the tenets of ‘Democracy’ indeed must be influenced by the needs of people, created to help them, and amendments carried out to pave the way for the future democratic landscape to exist peacefully.
But both you and I know readers that today when we talk about government and its representatives, our voices are more than often, full of disdain and despondency. The very institutions of the modern government that were made to serve us have let us down in some way or another.

Author Subhashish Bhadra examines these institutions of the modern government through the objective lens to dissect microscopically policies and acts carried out by them from their inception to the modern-day forms. And he does it masterfully without any biases, biases that a common man harbors in political matters.

The language is simple, kept so keeping Gen Z in mind. Every facet, opinion, problem of the institutions, and solution is quite expertly explained. You may or may not agree with the author’s opinion on several political topics but, the author incorporates ethos, pathos, and logos wherever necessary in his arguments which makes them quite enjoyable to read. His way of reaching the readers is to engage them and make them aware of any political loopholes.

This book is indeed the product of deep research well done and expertise put together. I may not love non-fictions based on political topics, nonetheless, I liked reading it well. I may have lost focus on several occasions since I remain apolitical and stay away from anything political since it is rooted in my disdain for the unfairness of the Indian political system. Hence, I liked the objective view of this book. I liked what the author tried to do. If you’re someone who’s politically charged and loves to discuss on political topics, this book is for you.

Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back by Subhashish Bhadra offers an insightful exploration of India's intricate institutional landscape, highlighting its impact on diverse aspects of society. Bhadra adeptly delves into pertinent questions, drawing parallels between seemingly unrelated issues like film censorship, agricultural policies, law enforcement, and political integrity.

The book delves into the crux of these dilemmas, revealing that their common denominator lies in flawed institutional structures. Whether it's the disparity in police responses to protestors or lockdown violators, or the challenges faced by the Election Commission, the underlying issue is the inadequate framework governing these institutions.

Bhadra's work masterfully underscores the indispensability of robust institutions, which endure beyond political transitions. His call for a sustained emphasis on bettering these foundational systems presents a compelling argument for a more resilient economy, media, law enforcement, parliament, and cultural environment. The book bridges the gap between academic discourse and contemporary understanding, making the concept of institutions accessible to younger generations.

Steering clear of ideological biases, "Caged Tiger" provides a captivating narrative that unveils the often overlooked evolution of India's institutions. By artfully simplifying intricate research and complex frameworks, Bhadra presents the material in a language and cultural context that resonates with millennials and Gen Z. The book's historical journey, reaching back to the British Raj and tracing developments through subsequent governments, encapsulates the gradual evolution of Indian institutions.

Furthermore, Bhadra's work identifies policies that perpetuate societal constraints and offers insights into how individuals can contribute to change. In essence, "Caged Tiger" becomes an indispensable guide for young Indians, empowering them to comprehend, engage with, and navigate pressing issues. It encapsulates the essence of a society's transformation, driven not solely by changing leadership but by the revitalization of its foundational institutions.

✓Being an economics student, I was always interested in the economic metrics of the world. Gradually, I developed an interest in the political and governmental metrics too. Thus, when I came across this book and the great reviews its getting lately, I knew I had to pick it up.
✓The book talks about "How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back." I must say that the content has been well-researched and the source citations proves it. Even while reading various concepts and beliefs, I found that the author has provided several relevant examples to prove his point. I appreciate the author's effort in doing so. It not only made the content realistic and relatable but also made it easy to understand. A lot of lesser-known and valuable information has been incorporated. For example, the author has mentioned about the 1773 British Tax Policy Protest and the birth of United States of America.
✓The author has confidently stated his perspective, which impressed me. A lot of information from the economic perspective has also been mentioned. The author has shown how the government has unnecessarily interrupted media projects and exploited broadcasting in order to change human perspectives for their own benefit. Interruption in movies and books raises a question on the freedom of speech. Revising history and limiting sexual content has also been used by the government for their objectives. The disheartening case of Ali Mohammad Bhat has been mentioned. It was something that I was unaware of.
✓The book will clearly make you think whether democracy is threatened in our nation. The author clearly shows that the root cause of all this is that we have given too many liberties to the government. I would like to clearly mention that I agree with the author's most of the statements and beliefs but there are a few portions that I hold a different opinion about. However, it didn't disappoint me at all because this book is a book of opinions and the author has done a remarkable job at gathering relevant information. The rich vocabulary and relevant examples make it a lot more interesting and meaningful.

With a deep research, the book has been written elaborately all about our government and the institutions of our India. It includes logic, argues, discussions, insights, in-depth information, analysis of institutions and principles of constitutions. And there are many inputs have been added by the author precisely. It raises so many questions to the readers as they read one by one. The author also gave answers to those questions and how to get back our lost freedom too. It talks more about various government policies and the author's views on those policies in both negative and positive aspect.

Every successful country will need a balance between the power of the constitution and the rights of individual citizens. The author urges us to reimagine our politics, not in favor of strong leaders but in strengthening existing institutions. This book will make you see a different India. The ideas and the views of the author will give you a clear picture of the brightest part of our future India. While the others are hesitant to trust big banks, governments and institutions across the world, we Indians, are trusting the government more than the media and other private organizations. This book helps us to understand the analysis of institutions in revitalizing Indian democracy.

It is an important book with an engaging narration which is a very essential reading for every citizen of India. A few part of it would lack the presentation when there is a complex idea have been discussed which made the read to go slow that might pull our interest down for a while.

The title "Caged Tiger" was chosen wisely in relate to the discussions within the book. The cover was neatly presented. Language used has been intelligible. Though there are some contradictions with the author's view at certain concepts, we finally can understand that then only we can learn about the potential solutions for the problems. So this book is totally based on India and its regulatory policies and cages in the nation.

It is a must read book for anyone who wants to understand how the Independence and accountability of institutions shape our everyday life and freedom in India.

Caged Tiger
5/5

"The equality that we created on the voter side is not matched on the candidate side. While each of us can vote, not all of us have an equal chance of being elected. That makes our democracy less equal than it appears at the surface."

As someone greatly interested in politics and political institutions, I was very excited to read this book. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. The author is clearly well-educated and has thoroughly understood and analyzed the current state of affairs in the political sphere. All the points presented are properly researched and have the legitimate backing. This book was deeply insightful and caused me to care much more about the world I live in than before. It was truly disheartening to read some of the stories presented in the book, especially when it came to matters like sexual assault and false accusations. This book was an eye-opener for me and taught me a lot about the political system of the country I live in.

However the book also offers hope and promise that we as citizens can make the future better for all of us. The author clearly outlines plans of actions for specific problems that our political structures are facing, and solutions to fix them. Throughout the book, the author reiterates the three principles of good institutions - tightly-written law, transparency in procedures, and independent oversight - that will shape the future government. Although it currently seems like our institutions have no hope at all and have to be completely dismantled, Caged Tiger offers hope for the future and properly states the procedures to follow for a government.

After reading this book, I am much more well-informed about my country, and in the upcoming years I hope I can help the people striving to make a difference in our flawed institutions. Caged Tiger offers suggestions, but it is up to us as the people to make sure these suggestions are implemented and followed through with. I hope that years from now, we can truly achieve the aim of "minimum government, maximum governance".

I believe every resident of India should read this book to understand the problems with our institutions, and measures we can take to improve them. It is so easy to simply criticize poor governments, however actually achieving substantial change is not so simple a task. Reading this book will at the least inform you of the state of the world, and it may even inspire you to become an activist and fight for political change.

Governments will always play a huge part in solving big problems. They set public policy and are uniquely able to provide the resources to make sure solutions reach everyone who needs them. They also fund basic research, which is a crucial component of the innovation that improves life for everyone.
- Bill Gates

So, rightfully Bill Gates said these lines. When it comes to our country we have 'n' a number of policies but the major problem arrives in the implication of it as lots of people are unaware about it.
This book tells us about these policies in a very simplified manner and after reading about it one can take advantage of it for sure.
This book has touched on varied political issues but the best part of it is without favouring or criticizing any of the current government or other current. The author has stated his viewpoints.
Covid - 19 has been the worst phase of many people's lives. Many people have lost their near and dear ones not only this but inflation was also at the top at that time. Apart from it, mental we suffered a lot, government institutes planned varied policies - schemes about it and many of us are quite unaware of it.
This book not only talks about the current political leaders like Modi Ji but also Nehru Ji and various other important faces of Indian politics.

Suggestion -
There were varied things in the book where my viewpoints were different from the author but that is normal as we are different individuals with a different mindset.
So, it's a suggestion to the readers to not take the contradictory viewpoints negatively.

Pros -
. The research work is indeed good.
. It will enrich your knowledge about various subject matter.
. The title of the book in itself is of huge value, the word tiger denotes strength and the cage implies how this strength has mitigated because of varied restraints and it's on us to overcome that.
As our constitution not only gives us fundamental rights but there are also fundamental duties too that we need to follow.
Moreover, this book is an eye opener.

Indian Politics and Governance is an epic drama of democracy, power plays, and a dash of chaotic brilliance. It's a sort of a rollercoaster ride where you can strap in, grab your popcorn because of course you possibly cannot do anything. Indian youth may have extravagant discussions about current societal norms, issues pertaining within the marshlands of Indian governing institutions but honestly we don’t even know where to begin to make a change. This book might have just built a roadmap for us.

There’s a particular chapter in the book that I reread because it made so much sense.
‘Controlled Cacophony’ - Once, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prominent Indian nationalist was convicted under the British India sedition law. Tilak's crime? An article published in his newspaper that boldly condemned the oppressive actions of the colonizers.
In current India, a girl is vandalized for her free speech and another company is policed for tagging a political post as misleading. It prompts us to reflect on the perplexing reality that even though the British left long ago, certain repressive legal frameworks remain in place.

But this isn't just a book about problems—it's a guide to solutions. It's a call for us to come together, regardless of our political leanings, and demand better institutions. It reminds us that leaders may come and go, but it's the institutions that shape the course of our nation's destiny. By focusing on building a stronger economy, a more accountable media, a fairer police force, an effective parliament, an inclusive internet, and a vibrant cultural life, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come. The author has done meticulous research which makes the book introspective yet interesting. Academic jargon or detached analysis tends to make me feel lectured, but the parallels drawn by author @subhashish Bhadra has left me questioning the status quo. Needless to say, it was a great read !

Democracies sometimes go down the path that make them democrazies. Caged Tiger by Subhashish Bhadra is an account of how too much governance has stolen from the Indian citizens their fluidity of choices.
The research for this, I must say, has been done very vigorously. All the scenarios, all the examples and events talked about are logical. The writing is effortless and comes natural, as you would expect from a University of Oxford alum. He uses his education, his experiences and the situations of this country to weave together a book where he discusses how the governments, both state and central, can have amendments in their functioning and rather, their ideology to push Indian brilliance to its limit.
But however much I understood the logic of the author, that is exactly where I felt the book missed me. It was more about logic than morality. It might have been my stupidity to expect that from a polito-social book, but I need to put it up here. Specifically the pages where he questions the nationwide porn ban, citing how there were no evidences of porn being the cause of sexual assaults in the nation. That felt betraying to me as I have read articles and watched documentaries of the horrific porn industry and how it's just abuse being filmed on a professional level. To add to this, the alcohol ban in Bihar and Gujarat was questioned by Bhadra, as he said that the taxes from booze would help the nation build infrastructure and better healthcare. It seemed insulting to the lakhs of families who suffer due to alcohol issues of a family member.
The book is very well written, with a clear motive to discuss what our governments can do better. Only if the West wasn't placed on an immortal-like pedestal where everything the US and UK does it immaculate, it might have created a better impact on a common Indian student like me.

The outstanding and meticulously researched book "Caged Tiger: How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back"by Subhashish Bhadra scrutinizes contemporary India. Through copious evidence and illustrative instances, the writer substantiates their assertions regarding governmental and commercial factors.

An interesting inquiry, the writer transports the audience on an intriguing voyage extending to the era of British imperialism in India, unveiling the roots of current Indian establishments. Proposing an extensive comprehension of the measures and overhauls that have driven development while simultaneously upholding basic persecution, the writer carefully outlines the impacts of progressive administrations, starting from Nehru's rule through Modi's residency.

The wordsmith skillfully intertwines various facets of our existence with the edicts constructing our civilization and gauges their relevance in his comprehensive report. The wordsmith articulately depicts situations where individuals were incapable to utilize their liberty as they ought to have through a diversity of authentic happenings. The wordsmith furthermore drafts intriguing analogies betwixt Indian decrees and those of other realms, proffering thought-provoking outlooks on how miscellaneous lawful systems might have managed comparable circumstances.

An exceptionally endorsed volume with the ability to stimulate inner transformation is Caged Tiger. It capably imparts the concept that we must all reassess the function of the administration in our lives and dares us to gaze impartially at our establishments. I forcefully counsel you to make the most of the opportunity to peruse this book straightaway if you have an eager interest in compositions that are worried about the public and social interests.

Highly recommended.

The book I recently read is an eye-opening account of the economic, political, and cultural lives of people in India, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The author brilliantly discusses how misinformation spread through social media and the government's lack of transparency has affected the people of India. The book touches upon sensitive topics such as the government's inability to disclose the basic details of tax collection and COVID-19 funds, which has led to public distrust in the government's functioning.

The author also sheds light on the past economic conditions of India and how nationalism of banks and law amendments have affected the economic growth of the country. The book is a well-researched and informative account of the drawbacks of society, and the examples given are insightful and relevant. The author also highlights the violation of human rights and injustice by the police force, which is a concerning issue that needs to be addressed. The book covers a wide range of topics and provides a comprehensive understanding of the economic, political, and cultural conditions in India. The author has also done an excellent job of highlighting the drawbacks of society and how they impact people's lives. The book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the current state of affairs in India and how it impacts the lives of people. The only drawback of the book is that it can be a bit dense and heavy for readers who are not well-versed in the economic and political landscape of India.

All-in-all, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the social, political, and economic conditions of India. The author's detailed research and insightful analysis make it an informative and thought-provoking read. The book highlights the importance of transparency in governance and the need for effective policies to address the issues faced by the people. The author's writing style is engaging and informative, making it an easy read despite the heavy topics discussed.

What an absolute delight! I always tend to reach for a non-fiction book between longer fiction reads to break things up, and this book was just ideal. I'm not sure what compelled me to pick up this book, but that's true of many books I read. I simply felt like it was something I needed to read at that moment, and I'm very glad I did.

CAGED TIGER: HOW TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT IS HOLDING INDIANS

-SUBHASHISH BHADRA

From the progress made by the government to how the system has grabbed the roots of the nation and is pulling it down{ in the name of upliftment and development}.
You might feel like you already know a lot of things but the author backed it up with his research and with reasons and the hidden intentions. It surfaces a lot of things and also assures you about what you know. This is aimed to bring a little transparency between the very known public servants and the public.

The best political novels do not directly comment on the compelling issues of the day but examine how ideology, political maneuvering, and the unbridled ambition of an individual can exacerbate existing social and cultural inequalities, thereby leading to intolerance, division, hatred, and violence.

All of which goes to explain why I seek out books about politics. Fiction, nonfiction—it doesn’t matter. If it’s credible and at least reasonably well-written, I’m game.

Sometime early in my reading of this book, I felt in my gut I had encountered a classic. This book is bleak but this book is more than its bleakness; although it is never hopeful, it is earnest, honest, and aware. Even if its bleakness (which I liked) prevents it from becoming an official classic, there is still a part of my vision that I am sure will come true.

In this intellectually stimulated and thought-provoking read, the author fearlessly exposes the institutional obstacles impeding the progress of our nation.
Spanning from the era of the British Raj to present-day policies, the book meticulously traces the origins of modern institutions. Through a comprehensive analysis of various policies implemented during the reigns of leaders like Nehru through Modi, the author fearlessly highlights their flaws while proposing potential rectifications. While leaders may come and go, the enduring impact of our nation's policies and institutions remains.
Across its nine chapters, this book dissects numerous socio-political scenarios, providing profound insights into the workings of our governance. Particularly compelling is the chapter titled "Controlled Cacophony," which presents a plethora of examples showcasing the imperfections of our institutions. The author underscores the urgency of fortifying and rejuvenating our government today to safeguard the government of tomorrow.
As evident from the extensive references cited at the end of the book, the author's work is a result of thorough research. Offering a fresh perspective on government, this book outlines strategies to overcome pitfalls and setbacks, sparing future generations the arduous task of nation-building.
The author advocates for transparency and consistency in written laws, asserting that such measures will foster public adherence and hold individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their impact.
Overall, this insightful book offers a comprehensive understanding of how our institutions function, providing readers with an alternative outlook. I rate it 4 out of 5

Have a look at the stunning cover of the book again. Now, have a look at the name of the person who had written this book. So, this book titled "Cages Tiger : How Too Much Government Is Holding Indians Back" covers a wide range of topics and provides a comprehensive understanding of the economic, political, and cultural conditions in India. Book talks about the real need of the Governance that our country needs. Blindly following anyone is not going to settle the chaos, but a proper governance that does not bind the people is what, that is needed the most.

The author explains why institutions are essential for good governance and i must say we are in great need of good governance as it is the process of measuring how public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources and guarantee the realization of human rights in a manner essentially free of abuse and corruption and with due regard for the rule of law. As such, these institutions make up the fabric within which citizens, businesses, political parties and the economy operate, and provide a framework of rules, social norms and understood processes that are both explicit and implicit.

Author also talks about the past economic conditions of India and how nationalism of banks and law amendments have affected the economic growth of the country. "All our institutions are connected by the invisible threads of societal values—they either improve or deteriorate collectively."

A well structured non-fiction that screams the maneuver of governance, the intriguing aspects of laws and regulations, and the stories of the civilians that needs to be deeply introspected, in a young and critical voice.

'Caged Tiger' by Subhashish Bhadra is a book about the nation's hidden foundations, the different institutions and how it binds us together and breaks one, as well as the success and failure of it, the culture of the government and it's policies, ample of ways and solutions for the civilians to perform the civic duty in a rightful manner, and many more such things that we as an individual living in India must understand and should work towards the construction of the Indian dream for the betterment of our country. Plus, it is the kind of non-fiction that needs to be read slowly (as I did) and must be understood with great focus to inhale the information in a correct way.

Amidst all this, the real questions are, who is the caged tiger? Is it us, the normal citizens of India or is it the political leaders that we elect? Who has the highest power? Us, the one who vote or the one who get voted? Are we using our rights properly or are the laws toying with us?

The author has versed his opinions in a truly admirable way. Direct, no beating around the bush. Well-researched and highly assertive. The dripping truth in the information provided is indeed obvious, right from Nehru's rule to the present times, the aspects of rise and downfall of the country's growth and comparison of it with other countries, the role of government during various crisis times, etc.

Recommended? Absolutely.

"Democracy, after all, is not just about showing up at an election booth once in five years. It is equally about what happens between elections and whether citizens are seen as participants in every consequential decision made by governments."

💼 Shubhashish Bhadra's "Caged Tiger" is a well researched article about the flaws in our governmental institutions and about the solutions that can be done for its improvement. I was excited to read this book as I also felt the need to talk about this topic.

💼 The title of the book itself reflects the lack of freedom which is experienced by the common people of India. The introduction begins by stating some census and information from pandemic period to establish this point.

💼 Our constitution gives unlimited power and authority to our government but fails to give such kind of freedom to it's citizens. If the common people are allowed to know and interfere in the administration process then together we can make a huge change to bring a better future.

💼 This book points out the need to establish a practical and efficient government which gives more power to it's citizen. It also talks about the power that governmental institutions have in all sectors including social, political and economic.

💼 This was a real enlightening read for me. The language was easily understandable but sharp. I think this book will be taken by only those who likes to read this kind of topics. But the facts explained in this book need to reach more audience. The solutions are highly practical if it is given necessary importance.

💼 I wish to express my appreciation and gratitude to the author for the effort that he had put in writing this book and also for the time he spend in research for the same.

Highly recommended to everyone...
