For once, I thought being an orphaned slave would keep me safe. Yet when the dragon princes come for their promised bride, Lady Cordelia, they take me too. Why? Because they are immortal assholes who like to hoard. But when Cordelia is killed, the dragons have a big if they return without a human mate, they’ll lose their throne. So we strike a deal. I play bride in exchange for my freedom. All I must do is survive the bridal trials, manage the mating mechanics, and remember that dragon royals are killers, not friends. All I must do is not fall in love. Dragons’ Captive takes place in Lunos, the world of Alex Lidell’s best-selling Power of Five novels. Expect spice, fated-mate bonds, powerful dragon shifters, and a fake relationship that turns all too real. Ready to be stolen away alongside Kit? Then one-click Dragons’ Captive now!
Alex Lidell is the Amazon Breakout Novel Awards finalist author of THE CADET OF TILDOR (Penguin) and several Amazon Top 100 Kindle Bestsellers, including the POWER OF FIVE romance series. She is an avid horseback rider who believes in eating dessert first. She writes as both Alex Lidell and A.L. Lidell.
Honestly this had the potential for a good book, but when a beaten and abused slave girl runs from the princes who have been nothing but cruel to her, and then they “spank” her in public as punishment - this gave me the complete icks. I just couldn’t continue after this. No no no
Dragon’s Captive is book one in the Her Royal Dragon Pack series by Alex Lidell.
This was a hard one to read and get into. It features a master/servant theme. We have slavery and abuse.
Know one is nice to our lead heroine, Kit. She’s mistreated and sold over and over. Everyone is a jerk and no one is nice to Kit at any point and yet, she ends up feeling things for these four dragons who bought her; even though she isn’t the one who will be their bride.
No world building. No character building. Lots of erotic reverse harem.
It just didn’t care for Dragon’s Captive. It had so many cringe worthy moments that bothered me. I did finish it, but will never return.
Kit, slave fifteen years, sold by her mother. Mistreated. Evil mistress, equally mistreated. Mistress assassinated, becomes dragons (plural guys) mate. Understandably tries to run, dragon paddles her past the point of abuse. What's not to love, well so much is not to love. Found myself skipping so much. Had hopes for this, but the story is all over the place, with very little world building. And everyone, and I do mean everyone, is a jerk in the story to poor little slave girl, but her smart mouth sees her through. No I do not recommend this.
The writing is well done, as is the style of the dialogue and it’s technical flow.
However, the personalities and story’s direction didn’t work for me. Bad enough one of the male love interests murders a friend of the FMC, literally in front of her (to the point I’m surprised she didn’t get splashed by blood?).
I find it hard to understand how the FMC will get over this, to develop a relationship with him later?
Shouldn’t have worried, she’s more upset and frightened of riding a horse, than she is of the MMC’s. She even banters with one of them, mere minutes after the above event. No tears, no anger, no disgust…
I can’t get my head around this… plus, I checked out the reviews after pausing, and discovered it only gets worse, with the inclusion of training her how to please and obey them…
This is not for me.
If the details don’t bother you, and you enjoy bully story’s, with little decency or reaction from the FMC, then I would recommend it"
It seems to be very well written, with the potential of a good plot line, from what I did read.
4.6 / 5.0 To start with, Alex Lidell is one of my top 10 favorite authors. Her other series in this fantasy world, Power of Five, was the first RH I ever read and I have since reread it at least once a year. There is a brief mention of these characters towards the beginning of the book but having read the other series is not needed. A map would be great, though.
This is book one in a new series with new plot devices and new characters to adventure with. The main objective of this book is to find a compatible human female to breed dragon pups. That’s it, so you know there will be sex, smut, and all the erotic goodness Lidell is capable of writing. It is also a plot device that has built in angst and drama, so check those two off your bingo cards if you’re playing along.
It took me a little bit to realize that the dragons are written specifically to be non-human and thus not relatable in their motivations. At first I thought, well that’s toxic and highly problematic, but then I made the connection around chapter 5. I went back and started from the beginning with the adjusted mindset that I am supposed to be disturbed by their behavior, because they are not human. There is an animal instinct to everything they do. Once I made that realization the entire story clicked and flowed.
As she does in Power of Five, the chapters switch POV and narrative voice depending on who is “talking”. If the FL (Kit) is talking, then you get 1st person POV, but anyone else (the MLs or others) it will be in 3rd person POV. I know this about the author, so when the chapters switched characters at the beginning and the narrative voice changed too, I was expecting it, but a new to Lidell reader might miss that and question the readability. It’s not an issue, as she is consistent in doing this, and it gives the story a bit of a break from the “inside the mind of the character” approach to writing.
Overall, I liked it. I also like that it is different from Power of Five even though it’s set in the same fantasy world. I could do with some more detail and a little more backstory, but hopefully that’s to come. Lidell likes the cliffhangers, so if this follows her usual release formula, the next book will be out in 6 to 8 months. I am ready for it now, but know it will be worth the wait.
I received this book as an eARC through BookSprout for my honest review. Check your triggers on this one and if you’re not into reverse harems (many men and one woman), then proceed with caution. I do recommend it and cannot wait for the next book.
"Dragons' Captive" is the first book in a new series by Alex Lidell. It is set in the same universe as the Power of Five series, but it is absolutely not necessary to have read it before starting this series. I admit it was fun to get a new glimpse of this world and to meet some new characters within, but that's about as far as the connection between both series goes...
That being said: this series has soooo much of the things I love in a reverse harem series! There are dragon shifters, a prophecy, a slave girl with a backbone, royalty, men who don't take no for an answer, games of the hungergames-variety (in the next book, I assume), a high fantasy setting and so much more. I truly loved this book, even though I was really looking forward to get a glimpse of the (hunger)games and I still have to wait for that in the next book(s). Most of all I loved the dynamic between Kit and the dragon princes and can't wait to see more of that. This first book really wet my appetite for more from these characters. The only thing that bothered me a little while reading, was the switch between first person POV (Kit) and third person POV (the princes) throughout the book. It took me a little while to get used to that, but luckily the story in itself was interesting enough to keep me going.
It's hard to connect with heroes who display no compassion, empathy, or basic common decency towards servants and treat the women as disposable brood mares. It would have made it easier to like them if they showed restraint or any inclination to be different from the culture they were raised in.
I'm having trouble believing that a connection between the slave girl and the dragon brothers is possible considering their lack of empathy for those around them or basic courtesy for those considered beneath them. It feels too real. Women are to be bought and sold. Too historically real.
This is that one special snowflake type romance that means they can get away with treating every other female as less than except her, and there will never be any consequence for past behaviour.
At the time of writing this review, book 4 isn't out yet, but as an eternal optimist for the HEA, I'm hoping behaviours are confronted by FMC. As of book 3 I'm losing hope that there will be an eye opening look at how the dragon society has treated human women, I'm even losing hope that the MMC will feel remorse for past attitudes. I will see how it plays out eventually.
This is a slow burn RH about 4 dragon shifters (Tavias, Hauck, Quinton and Cyril) and one human slave (Kit) who could hold the key to everything the dragon’s desire. However, the only problem is… she is not the one prophesied, or is she?
In closing, this series has a lot of potential and I’m hoping the second book will be even better as the trials begin and their relationships progress. I also can’t wait to learn more about each of these characters and hopefully there will be a lot more of Kit’s spunky attitude and a whole lot more chemistry between Kit and her dragons.
This series is worth reading for those who love RH shifter stories as much as I do.
I have received this book through Booksprout and this is my honest review!
I stewed over the rating for a while. This is set in the same world as the Power of Five series, which is the first RH I ever read. And this started with those same vibes and I was so happy to be back in that world, but there’s a scene where Kit tries to flee and when she is caught and brought back, she is humiliated and has her ass beaten pretty relentlessly by a belt by one of the Fae that’s set up to be in her harem. That’s not really my vibe and every time she was aroused after that I felt icky. It’s set up to be like… kind of dubcon but not really? Idk I’m just nervous but I’m going to read the next book when it comes out and maybe I’ll feel differently by then.
I'll be honest, RH are not my normal go-to genre. I was wary of them for quite some time. I decided to give one a try and ended up liking it. When I picked up the author's other RH series, I was completely enthralled with the entire story.
The same thing happened with this series. The moment I picked it up, I was pulled into the book and couldn't put it down. I intentionally took time out to read and asked everyone to leave me alone. I was that into the book.
One of the things I absolutely adore about Alex's PNR books is that she puts so much detail into them. We're given so much information but it never feels overwhelming or like an info dump. Which for me is HUGE in these types of books.
I felt like I'm wrapped up in the story of Kit and her dragon princes' as they fight the bad guys to get to the point of reaching their land and facing the bridal trials. Not only that but along the way we get great insight into each of the character's inner dialog. Kit wants her freedom while the others are battling their own demons so to speak.
I'm incredibly excited to see where this goes! Bring on the trials! Bring on all the steamy goodness woven in between the fascinating journey these characters are going to travel.
Absolutely would recommend it to anyone. Fantastic story!
Plot: 3.5/5 • Smut: 2.5/5 ———-> This left so many unanswered questions. I’m so frustrated. Zero resolutions, even more questions arise. The slave fmc VS four dragons. What could go wrong?
HUGE fan of Power of Five and AVID lover of everything dragon shifter.
So is this like my bread and butter? ….Uhhhh stars yes it is!
I love the character personalities and the banter back and forth as the story progresses. Kit has some sass in her and when that spine of hers wants to make an appearance…she can bring an alpha dragon prince to heel. 😎
I loved this story and cannot wait to see where this goes next. Plus the nod to Power of Five had my squeeing out loud and grinning like a fool. 🤗
A rh romantic fantasy with powerful Fae dragon shifters, royalty and slave trope, only horse, a pull to each other, fighting, steamy scenes and an upcoming battle to secure the throne.
Multiple povs. Kit’s pov is in 1st person and the dragons are told in third. (Sounds weird but I have found I love it and want to read more this way)
Main character group- Kitterny- aka Kit, human slave the dragons took to hoard Tavias-amethyst fae dragon shifter, heir apparent, fire magic and mind magic Cyril-blue dragon, former heir apparent and water magic Quinton-silver dragon, assassin and blood magic Hauck-yellow/gold dragon, green or earth magic, aloof and haunted by past love
Dragons' Captive is the first book in the Her Royal Dragon Pack series by Alex Lidell. I love Alex's books, and her favorite series of mine is her fantasy reverse harem romance- Power of Five. The exciting thing about the Her Royal Dragon Pack series is that we get to travel back to that same fantasy world or Lunos. I absolutely loved this book. I devoured it so quickly, and I already want more! If you are a fan of why choose romances, dragons, mates, magical powers and competitions, Dragons' Captive is a book you will not want to miss.
In Dragons' Captive, we meet our main character Kit. Kit is a breath of fresh air. I loved how spunky she is, even when faced with scary dragons, a scary journey and the total unknown, she never backs down. The book is told in multiple points of view- mainly Kit's POV but each of the Dragon shifter princes- Quinton, Tavias, Hauck and Cyril, also have chapters scattered throughout. I am hoping to see even more from each of their POVs in the next installments.
The four dragon prince's have come to claim their human mate, who has been trained her whole life to compete in the brutal Equinox trials. But when the dragons get there, they are each taken with Kit (even if they won't admit it) so even though she is a lowly slave, they take her along as well to add her to their dragon hoard. But along the way, things start to change between Kit and the guys. And that is all I am going to say about that. You need to read this one for yourself if you like swoon worthy moments and possessive dragon shifters. I loved this book and I am desperate for more! The Equinox trials have not started yet, but I am equal parts terrified for them and super excited them.
P.S. I cannot wait to see more of this "frenzy" take place in the next book. I loved the scene with Quinton, Hauck and Kit at the end of the book.
The series is entertaining but has three main issues:
1. The MMCs are basically the Power of Five guys. Blond internally tortured assassin, check. Brown haired tall stoic leader with inner uncertainty. Wild card extroverted antic guy with tormented past. etc. There's a place for recycling, this isn't it.
2. When he "spanks" her for trying to escape. I realize that on one hand, being true to the societal view that slaves are there to command and "discipline" plus the factor that dragons barely view humans as sentient beings, it would be hypocritical for him NOT to beat her. However, that's a no-go for the power dynamic and relationship between a FMC and MMC(s).
3. The entire premise that these dragons have to "prepare" the female with vaginal stretchers, and that some of the female candidates don't qualify because they can't physically accept the size. Come the fuck on. We birth babies with heads the size of small cantaloupes. The vagina does not need stretching and it doesn't maintain it lolol.
(also psa for people who buy into bodycount bullshit and think that a woman IRL who has had a lot of lovers has a loose vagina. The vaginal canal is a canal of muscle. What happens to muscle when you work it? It becomes firm. Not saggy. That is misogynistic bullshit we have been taught and need to unlearn. Does a man's dick get wrinkly when he sticks it into too many pussies? Come ON.)
Interesting storyline! The story has potential but unfortunately the influx of slavery soured the story for me early in the book. Cold blooded murder of a young female slave was a bad start for me. The writer has talent but not sure why the book or the author was on my suggested listing. Could be my reading choices of reverse harems occasionally.
Another downside, IMO was the cliffhanger. I read for pleasure not to be manipulated into buying another book by an author that has a fascination with slavery which does not smoothly connect with romance. I will make a hard pass on any books by this author in future.
One of the benefits of Kindle Unlimited is the near perfect recommendations of books and authors I would enjoy. I read over 100 books a year and like the convenience of books recommended to me. Thank you Amazon for providing such a wonderful service.
3.5-4 stars so I just gave it 4. I don’t know if it’s because I just came off a bad book reading run or if this book was really good but I enjoyed it. Multiple POVs, dragons, it was a fast read for me. The were atleast 3 sex/play scenes but not once did any of the guys get off. It doesn’t have to be so one sided. FMC did at one point (the first play scene) ask/offer to aid the MC but he declined. This offer never pops up again lol.
I wish the book was longer or that book 3 was available but ohwell I’m off to read book 2.
The writing was ok, if not great. There could have been more world building, but I didn't finish, so maybe there was.
I had absolutely no desire to read anything further about the princes abusing Kit and I absolutely detest bully "romances". She was a slave and they treated her like it, which is far too toxic a relationship for me to ever enjoy.
3.5 ⭐️/2 🌶️—The author’s books always have alternating narratives, but the FMC is in first person and the MMCs are in third person. I don’t know why this bothers me slightly but it does.
Alex Lidell is the queen of the Reverse Harem! She is my favourite author in the Reverse Harem genre and, as this new series proves, for good reason. This book had just the right balance between plot, character development and incredible sex scenes. The key to a good Reverse Harem novel is ensuring each different male love interest is a unique, fully developed character and Alex Lidell does this so well (both in this series and her previous ones). Her characters are so enticing and intriguing they nearly jump off the page. The author also does a brilliant job of starting to develop the individual relationships between the male love interests and the heroine, ensuring that each bond is different and engaging for the reader.
I finished this book in under a day, I couldn’t put it down.
Fans of her previous series Power of Five will love the return to that world, with all new characters. In fact, the males are a little darker, a little crueler, and consequently, a little sexier.
I loved how this series started, with the heroine kidnapped by the males to be part of their dragon hoard, almost as if she was an afterthought. They treat her almost like property (to begin with, before they get to know her better.) It was a very sexy, enemies to lovers style beginning and helped to build the sexual tension.
My only criticism is that when the book ended it felt like the book that only just started, but I also know that it’s because the author is setting up the story for a larger series. It just means I absolutely cannot wait for the next instalment in the series.
I would 100 recommend this book, especially if you like Reserve Harem novels. For those readers who have never tried the genre before, this is a great series to start with. Alex Lidell introduced me to the genre and this book is a great example of the genre done well.

WARNING! Cliffhanger! It’s mostly a book hook type, since Kitty and the Princes’ story is far from done, but it’s probably only a 3/5 on my trauma scale.
It’s a brutal introduction, but Kitty still somehow manages to capture the eyes of the four dragon princes who have come to the human world to take the daughter of the house, Cordelia, back as their bride. She’s surprised when they decide to take her too, but as a slave, she has little choice. And then when Cordelia is killed, she makes a bargain with them to take her place…
Set in the same world as Power of Five (which is briefly referenced), we are introduced to a new quint; this one with four dragon shifting princes, and a human female slave. Dragons don’t think like humans, and don’t really consider them very much either, as is savagely shown by our not-quite-heroes. It’s a bit of a perilous journey for Kitty, but she’s a survivour, and that’s what keeps her alive. There’s not much to recommend the dragons as yet, but we do learn a little about them and the dangerous political world in which they live, and in which Kitty now finds herself.
It’s an engaging read (as I have come to expect from Alex Lidell), with a fast moving plot and plenty of action. The reader is drawn in despite themselves, as we are introduced to a new side of Lunos. The world is an interesting one, and the subplot that is arching through the series is intriguing enough to make you want to keep reading. This is an enjoyable read for the RH fantasy fan, and for those who like their romantasy goth spicy and on the darker side.
I actually enjoyed reading this book despite it being problematic. This is a high fantasy dragon shifter reverse Harem with a human woman as their slave/captive/treasure. Kit is a slave in a noble human household when 4 dragon princes come to collect their intended bride who might fulfill a prophecy, the cruel Lady Cordelia. However, Kit and her friend are caught talking badly about the Lady Cordelia and so the princes punish Kit's friend to the fullest extent, but take Kit to be part of their horde of treasure because she catches their attention and baser instincts. So, Kit and Lady Cordelia set off with the princes on their journey (I love the travel trope and the sharing a horse trope). Although Cordelia fits the description of the woman on the prophecy, and Kit doesn't the dragon princes are far more interested in her. However, they display a mixture of friendliness and cruelty towards her. They have a violent indifference towards humans, and unfortunately put Kit through quite a lot. The stuff Kit goes through should have her hating the dragons, but her attraction and budding friendship (which is questionable) continue. This is a very steamy book with a lot of chemistry between the characters. The plot is interesting, and the tropes are familiar but good. I believe this book will either work for you or it won't based on your triggers. So, I will list the following triggers with spoilers:
TWs: murder of fmc's friend by mmcs in front of her, taking fmc as a slave, mistreatment of fmc by mmcs, public humiliation/punishment of fmc by mmcs, belting the fmc by mmc, fmc's life threatened by mmcs, violence, blood, illness, murder, strangulation play, CNC
DNF- quit @ 64% I really had a hard time with this book. The writing style is weird, a lot of the inner dialogue is done in third person style, which is something I hate. I also hate that this a “bullying” type romance. I usually avoid the bulling kind of romance, I could forgive with some of redemption, but never forget or even want the bully(‘s), though I didn’t realize this would be that kind of romance. I will avoid this author in the future, though I’ve read other books from her, too many weren’t to my liking.
At my age (62), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
Dragons captive we get to go back Lunos but this time we are taken into the world of the four Dragon princes.
Tavias , Cyril , Quinton and Hauck are the fout Dragon princes and they have gone to the estate of Lord Agam’s to collect the 15 year bargain, which is Lady Cordelia. She has been trained all of life and to be prepare for when the Dragon Princes come to get her in always imaginable. She is to go back to Lunos with them to enter the Equinox trials to try and win the elixir in order for her to conceive pups as there is a Prophecy, that the Dragons believe in, and they feel that Cordelia is the woman in their prophecy But while there they come across a slave called kit who they all feel a pull towards, and Hauck decide he is going to take her as his treasure and kit is taken along with them on the journey back to Lunos While on the way to Lunos things change for them, and they have to start to rethink how they’re going to be able to go and take part in the equinox trials as everything has changed.
I love this story. I can’t wait for the next book to find out what happened to the five of them and how their relationships will grow crack under pressure and will they all survive the equinox trials
Dragon shifters need to mate with human females to increase their numbers, but magic is required. The females must go through difficult trials that they have been trained for and the winner receives that “extra” fertility elixir to make the remainder of the ceremony possible. So four royal princes are dispatched to bring back the bride who has been trained to fight for them and survive the mating process. In addition to the bride, Lady Cordelia, they grab Kit to appease their dragons, and it was a fortunate decision for them. Very quickly in the story, Lady Cordelia is killed off, but Kit has not been trained for the ordeal she will be facing as the replacement bride. Will she be able to enter the trials? Can she win? Or will she be unable to survive the dangerous ordeal?
If you take out the references to spanking and swatting the bottom, which repulses me, I would have enjoyed the story far more than I did. Can you imagine, as I do, a big enormous dragon spanking a tiny human female? Trust me, I feel no desire to read any more after that. I have absolutely no idea why anyone wants that kind of nonsense in their stories. But skipping those parts, the trials were exciting.
How do I say I fell hopelessly in love with this book and cannot wait for more.... Well I guess I just did.
I would 100 percent recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy reverse harem which involves dragons! I'm a sucker for a good dragon why choose.
This story follows Kitterny, an abused slave, and these 4 mighty dragon princes, who lost their so thought part of a prophet.
Ultimately, I fell in love with this book and all the characters widely intrigue me with their different attitudes and reactions to certain bits. They all have their own going and reaction and the character development in this single book alone was magnificent. First time in a while I can fully say I am happy with the plot as it wasn't ignored and very well executed.
I won't lie, I am completely hurt by the cliffhanger as I just need more! However, the beginning completely threw me off, I won't say what happened, but how was it completely ignored in Kitterneys mind? It was briefly mentioned and quite ignored for being a friend.... But other than that I loved this book and definitely will read the next.

Alex Lidell is one of my all time favourite RH authors and when I found out that she had another series coming out set in the same world as Power of Five, I was already sold on it, add the fact there were dragon shifters, count me in.
I thoroughly enjoy the way Alex writes, by creating a world which I am more than willing to dive into, the characters, the plot, and the relationship development between Kit and the dragon princes were all really well done.
Having the books written in multiple POV means that we not only get to see Kit’s thoughts (which are written in first person POV), but also the guys (which is in third person POV) which may feel a bit confusing to start off with, however, I felt it worked really well and I’m always a sucker for getting to see what the love interests are thinking and feeling.
This was an amazing introduction to this new series and I am really looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

This is definitely erotica. If you like reverse harem mixed with dubcon, you'll probably like this. The author does very vivid and complex characters. Come for the sex, stay for the story and you'll be fine. Come for the story, hoping to skim the sex? Yeah, good luck. This isn't "girl agrees to join queen competition and falls in love / gets adopted into dragon pack." The competition isn't even in this book. And the competition apparently involves being able to successfully have sex with multiple males simultaneously. No one involved is within bowshot of emotionally healthy. Our heroine agrees to all this because she wants her freedom (she is a slave) and it's kind of the only way to not die (due to some dragon idiocy). Looks like things are only going to get worse in this series going forward-- so I won't be (going forward to the next book)... which is oddly disappointing, given how well the story sucked me in (even though it's really not my cup of tea).
