Emma Fischel grew up in the country, the middle of five children, and had a happy, muddy childhood. She now lives in London and has three nearly grown-up children of her own – two boys and one girl, all very tall, and extremely useful at changing light bulbs she can’t reach. Emma writes both fiction and non-fiction. Her books have been published by Bloomsbury, Usborne, Watts, and others.
‘Famous People, Famous Lives’ are a series of factual books that describe the lives of well known figures in history. This particular book concentrates on the life of Julius Caesar. It begins with Caesar as a child and brings us right through his life, until his unfortunate death. The book describes Rome during the wars and explains the process Caesar went through to become a ruler of Rome. He fought very hard to become ruler, until some of the people in Rome became very jealous of him and turned people against him. They plotted against him and arranged to kill him. At the back of the book there are further facts about Caesar’s life, some were already explained in the book, however the repetition will help the children understand the importance of these facts. This book, no doubt, would be very central in a history lesson about Roman times, perhaps for Key Stage 2.
This book is one of a series of books called Famous People Famous Lives. Each book tells the story of a man or woman whos dedication to a cause has changed the world we live in. The books are historical factual books recalling the place in which these people lived. In this book of Julius Caesar, roman life is described using great illustrations to help the reader to understand difficult concepts of his life and of Rome as it was then. Julius Caesar was a soldier who eventually became ruler of Rome after many wars and opposition. He was then murdered because many people were jealous of him and because they were not able to make as much money. The book explains the facts of Julius Caesar’s life very well and makes it easy to understand for young children with the help of the illustrations. There are also further facts at the back of the book which explain it even more and give extra facts about him. This book would be suitable for children aged five to seven.
I read this book to my children after we had studied ancient times. We were surprised to find that there were a few of facts in this book we hadn't learned in our studies. The information is presented very simply. Even young children can easily understand it. There is a timeline of important events. There are lots of simple helpful pictures. A fair amount of information for such a short book. This book is great for younger children learning about Julius Caesar or Ancient Rome.
