Summer vacation arrives and Komura has plans with Mie. They’ve got big plans, in fact, if Mie ever contacts him. But when things get pretty fishy, will the series even resemble what it’s ostensibly about?

I’m very, very perilously close to being won over by this fluffy story with its ludicrous conceit after this volume, which remembers what it’s trying to do with its premise, but not to the extent that it stretches the bounds of plausibility.

And as much as Komura is such a nothingburger of a protagonist that he should license himself to Weight Watchers, there is, it must be said, something about a loser character who gets the girl who is entirely, completely aware that he is a big zero in terms of personality.

As usual, mothers know what is up. The conceit that we don’t see any of the adults’ faces is not unwelcome - it’s a subtle way of indicating that these kids do not yet occupy that world. But they still know their children well, especially at that age.

I mean, Komura’s mom might be blowing a little smoke up his butt, but she definitely has some words of wisdom and encouragement that he probably needs as he grinds himself into paste agonizing about whether Mie will contact him.

Said date, once it happens, is, in fact, very fidgety and very good. And that’s saying something when it’s the one hundredth aquarium date (give or take some wanton hyperbole) I’ve read in the last two years. Oh, but it isn’t a date. In that ‘it totally is’ sort of way. And it doesn’t hurt that in addition to being cute, it also has moments where it’s funny as hell to boot.

That’s not something I’d have imagined from this series, but Mie coming out of her house without her glasses and going right back to get them is a great touch that made me chuckle. To say nothing of Komura’s brief flirtation with bondage that made me actually laugh out loud.

There’s a lot to this aquarium set-up that pays off all over the place. It is a beautifully plotted piece of work, honestly, with lots of Komura trying to come to terms with his abysmal self-esteem and pining for Mie, while she is ably gaming her own inability to remember her glasses to hold hands with the boy she likes.

It’s basic stuff, but it’s done well and, honestly, it’s done exceptionally well compared to some of the underwhelming fluff this has doled out before. The fact that this art is so flipping good doesn’t hurt either.

There’s no question of why Mie is the apple of Komura’s eye; some of the composition here is stellar and positively adoring of its subject. Conversely, the story does not utterly sexualize a grade schooler, opting for adorable instead, which is very, very welcome.

4 stars - every manga that I am just okay on almost always has a moment where they nail it 110% and become a thing far beyond its initial inspiration. At such times, I seriously suspect the series has reached its apex. And so too has that moment arrived here, but I wouldn’t be sad if it stayed this enjoyable either.

A date at the aquarium? In the heart of summer? Please and thank you.

Komura's emotional disinclination is starting to eat at him. Frustration and uncertainty over the young man's inability to make visible progress with his crush means Komura's capacity to fully complete rudimentary (e.g., assigned homework) or essential (e.g., sleep) tasks is nonexistent. The girl who constantly forgets her glasses is a kind and simple girl, but the guy who has so earnestly fallen for her is the most self-conscious fellow the world has ever seen.

THE GIRL I LIKE FORGOT HER GLASSES v7 pulls readers into the early weeks of summer break. Komura, driving himself nuts over any number of idiotic thoughts, pings Mie and asks her out for a day trip. He doesn't think of it as a date, though. And, funnily enough, neither does Mie. The two dorks simply over-rationalize their meet-up as a summertime escapade best had in the company of a friendly classmate.

The current volume is an easygoing romp that focuses on a few nuances to the characters' odd dynamic. Mie, for example, occasionally spurs her femininity to the fore, but refuses to forsake her forehead wrinkles and hard, questioning gaze when things don't seem quite right. When the two pass an arcade on the way to the aquarium, Mie makes an impromptu detour, recalling her buddy enjoys game centers and the like. Sure, Mie sucks at games, but she always enjoys spending time with a good friend.

And yet, the emotional tumult threatening to undercut such simple moments isn't so easily forgotten. Mie is a bucket of nerves, but she's so lighthearted and whimsical that it's easy to forget the near mental breakdown that Komura has in the volume's earliest episodes. Komura openly acknowledges that his lack of self-confidence is holding him back. He even asks his mother for help (then promptly withdraws the request). If not for a random text, a pitstop at an arcade, and a few tender moments reflecting in the glow of some jellyfish tanks, Komura's depressive attitude might have turned the young man in an entirely different direction.

The best volume yet as Komura and Mie go on what is clearly a date but they still have yet to say how they feel about each other.

They’re in the midst of their summer break and don’t know if they’ll have time to see each other with the studying they have to get done, but Mie finishes quickly and they plan an outing to the aquarium.

It was incredibly cute and seeing their young love is so sweet and a good reminder of what it’s like to be so young and love sick. It makes me a little sentimental for those days of starting out with a new crush… but also makes me even more glad I’m grown up and married so I don’t have to deal with that kind of anxiety again. 😅

This was nice! We get a very focused volume about a day date between Komura and Mie. There are a lot of sweet moments and the story stays focused on the developing feelings they have for each other. I hope the series is more like this moving forward.

Cute anime aquarium date. It's the typical anime tropes and I glad that they didn't use the "forget her glasses" plot like as much in this one. Pretty relaxing volume.
