Armed with more unsettling knowledge about Gavin Devereaux and her circle of friends, Camille Hart is faced with new adversities and lethal propositions when she returns to the Amaranth exile to carry out Gavin's risky crusade.
Realizing her journey through the bayou was only the beginning of her struggle to stay with Gavin, she finds that leaving her Louisiana home is the least of her worries. New evils await her on the other side, and as she and her friends press on with their mission, they are confronted with the reality that everything doesn't always go according to plan.
As secrets unfold and alliances are formed and broken, only the strongest will survive and the power of love will be tested when a war between witches, humans, and vampires erupts into an all-out power struggle and all is on the verge of being lost.
During the high of the magical indie author era that swept the nation in 2012, Rachael Wade wrote over a dozen romance and fantasy novels about broken characters with tattered hearts. She has since then retired this pen name, so you won't find her on the socials anymore, but she still welcomes rights inquiries and messages from readers via Goodreads. Today she writes horror and suspense under a different name, though romance subplots still make cameo appearances in all of her stories.
I received this book to review for the ReadIt&Reap program in the ShutUp&Read group. Thanks to the mods and the author for providing this book for us to read.
First of all let me say I was really excited to start this book. The way things ended with Amaranth made me really want to dig farther into this story and find out what else is in store for Camille and Gavin. While Amaranth took me a little while to get into, The Gates pretty much took no time at all. We are right back where Amaranth ended.
Amaranth was good, but this one is even better. The author has the same style of writing, but she also includes some things that weren't around in Amaranth. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will just say this book includes some extra spiciness between Camille and Gavin and she even added much more humor. I thought this book was funny, romantic and it had the excitement I was expecting after Amaranth.
I am not a fan of instalove, and that was my main problem with Amaranth. It seemed like the romance came too quickly even though there was a long period in between when the two characters did not know each other. I liked how at the end, though, Camille smartened up and was more on guard. With this book their love is tested, and the love feels a bit more realistic.
That's all I'm going to say for now. This book is due out in April so maybe I will include more then. If you liked Amaranth you will love The Gates. If you are looking for an exciting, fun, fast paced paranormal series to check out The Resistance trilogy is a good one. I think it's very unique and creative.
Cover: It fits. Rating NC-17 for the sexiness of it all. Thumbs Up 4 Overall: I good follow up to the first book. Characters: Very good. Plot: A few twist and turns I didn’t see coming. Page Turner: Yes Series Cont.? Yes Recommend Yes Book Boyfriend: Josh
SUMMARY (50 word or less)
This book was about a journey into Gavin’s world. Camille was along for a long bumpy journey that made me wonder why she put up with so much. But there was a pay off, so she was a better girl than I. I’m looking forward to the next one.

We rejoin Cam and Gav at Arianna's at a party to recruit for the resistance against Samila in Amaranth. Plans are made and they return to Amaranth with a little protection provided by Vivienne. They appear in front of Samila and bargain with her to get through the gates.
Once in the village they are reunited again with Gabe and Audrey in exile as humans. Gavin and company meet with the towns people, under Samira's dictate, to join in with their coming resistance forces. The plan is to rise against Samira and gain freedom at the next cresent moon. In the midst of all of this is Scarlet, Gavin's ex. She is more then happy to make life rough for Camille. Will Cam keep Gavin's love or will she forfeit to Scarlet?
Will the resistance be able to defeat Samira? What other little surprises will jump out of the woodwork? Read and find out...
I really enjoyed this book, better then the first without a doubt. Cam's character shows more gumption and growth in The Gates and we get more intimate with Gavin, yum! Definitely a must read if you have read Amaranth. I have a feeling the third and final book is going to be one hell of a fire cracker! Enjoy!
Okay, so you may or may not know I was on the fence about the last book . In the first installment, there were issues (for me) of characters coming across as victims and not seeming to stand up and assert themselves. After reading the second book in the series, I'm ready to edit my original rating of Amaranth. No more fence, Book 1 gets a solid 4 stars now. "Why?" you may ask of my changing my rating of Amaranth after reading The Gates... Book 2 was just that good. I'm fully convinced now that this series, like many other series, just suffered from "first book syndrome." Many times the first book just isn't as fabulous as the series ends up being.
My original concerns of Camille being a 'victim' are mostly laid to rest with this book. She 'manned' up and 'grew a pair'... metaphorically speaking. She really seems to grow up just so much in The Gates, her character is so much stronger and more modern. I just really, really connected with Camille in this book as compared with Amaranth.
The Gates also has a much faster pace, it seemed to me, than that of Amaranth. There is action on more than one level (hint, hint, wink, wink) and the entire cast of characters seem to shake up some pre-conceived notions from the first book. I found myself starting to understand and almost sympathize with some characters, wanting to scratch the face off others... it really drew me in to the story that unfolded. Some plot developments were easy to guess, and others still surprised me. I had no problems finishing this book, or wanting to continue reading; I was eagerly absorbing each page and found myself staying up just a little later than I planned (... just one more chapter!)
Overall, this is a great follow-up to Amaranth. It was so good that it even changed my view on book one. It's a definite page turner, a little steamier than book 1, and a whole lot more 'sassy' attitude (in a good way) with Camille. If you've read and even somewhat enjoyed the first book in the Resistance Trilogy, I highly recommend continuing the series with The Gates!
I received this book graciously thru the Read It and Reap group. Many thanks to the author. A delightful sequel to Amaranth. A more rounded story told with enriching detail just enough to give you a wonderful insight to the city of Amaranth and those around our main characters without the excessive over description that many fantasy stories sadly possess. The story is rich with many twists and turns to keep you from putting down your book. I enjoyed this adventure even more than the first and anxiously await its final chapter!
Once again I was amazed. Rachael Wade has created another amazing read.I absoultely loved the first book in this series and couldn't wait to read this one. Camille amazed me again with her strength and determination. She is still an awesome character and with a fierce protectiveness for those she loves. The thing I loved with this book is we got more backstory on the other characters. I loved seeing Joel and Arianna's relationship through Arianna's eyes. Arianna became another character I fell in love with. I even found myself feeling sorry for and sympathizing with Samira after knowing more about her motives. I am so happy that this book had more of a backgroung based in Amaranth. We got to see more about how the people that live there lived and felt about being there. I was great to ger a more descriptive feel and vibe for it from this book. I love that Camille and Gavin's relationship grew more and they are finally getting a happy ending eventhough they still have hurdles ahead of them. I love the new character of Cecile. She was so powerful in her own right. Overall I loved this book as much as the first book. It was another wonderful ride and another great read. I can't wait to see where book 3 takes us.
Thanks to the ladies at the Shut up and Read Group and the author for a chance to review this.
I was one of the lucky ones to receive an ARC copy of this little gem, the second book in the Resistance Trilogy by Rachael Wade.
This isn’t your normal vampire story. Rachael Wade has created an amazing world for these creatures and she does a terrific job going from our would to theirs. This book has everything, vampires, witches, spells, portals, villains, suspense, mystery, and my favorite, love.
I love reading from the male POV and was quite pleased to see some of that in this book. I think reading from the male POV gives me that extra edge because, quite honestly, men baffle me and when I get to read what they are thinking, even if is just someone’s fantasy and imagination, I consider it a treat. That might be why I love reading romances written by male authors so much. But I love it even more when a woman does it, because after all, we know what we want more than the guys do and when a female writer can do it and make it sound believable, that’s magic, and Rachael Wade knows magic. I loved the twists she weaved into this one and extremely pleased by the turn of events. Ms. Wade’s writing is spot on and solid. I’m really looking forward to the next one in this trilogy and her next book, Preservation, coming soon, I hope.
I continue to be amazed by this author’s skill at world-building, and her ability to evoke character delineation and evolution. Additionally, the suspension of disbelief so important in the genres of paranormal, fantasy, or horror is accomplished so skillfully in this trilogy that the reader never even stops to puzzle whether alternate dimensions such as Amaranth exist, nor whether it is possible that vampires are “real,” products of a “curse” which can be mitigated and return them to humanity-at least, humanity in exile. Author Wade makes all these events and progressions seem so natural that I could practically open my front door and step into the reality experienced inside these pages.
Any reader wishing to focus on character depths, superb plotting, or excellent world-building skills, need look no further than Rachael Wade’s The Resistance Trilogy-and indeed this set would be a beneficial read and study for writers wishing to learn to excel in these capacities.
My highest recommendation is on this novel, as well as the first in the series. Do not miss; it matters not if you think you are a fan of paranormal or fantasy, or not. You will never be disappointed with this trilogy. Readers, read and revel. Writers, read and study and learn.
OH MY FROZEN SOUL !!!! What in the world did i just finish ! Wait , thats not what i want to talk about . Agggh , i dont even remember what i actually want to talk about . I think i better get started with this review , before we get interrupted by some powerful witch , who shouldn't even be here in the first place . Maybe he'll just take a wrong turn or something . Or maybe he'll just go and ..... nevermind lets get on with the review .
Vampires with a mission are back and how !!! If you thought Amaranth was all 'Okie -dokie ' kind of thing , then you my friend are in for a surprise joyride with 'The Gates '!! I dont even know where to begin this review . I just feel like typing in "Perfect in all aspects " and just shut my mouth , but then its going to be so unfair . So lets see if i can 'conjure' up words to summarise how awesome this book was and how i've fallen in love with it .
Firstly , lets start with the cover speak . Okay , honestly i still love the cover of Amaranth more if i compare it to the gates . I guess its the colours that make it appealing and intriguing . Anywhoo , the cover of the gates had me awestruck the first time i saw it . My mind was brain storming trying to find out a possible explaination behind this cover . And a part of me was wondering what does everything on this cover mean . And then i read the book and ! KABOOM ! everything flashes right in fron of my eyes . Oh BTW , that windmill there - super significant i tell you ! * Wink wink * ... In short , an awesome cover for an awesome book .
If Amaranth was all about meeting Cam , Gavin , Gabe , Audrey and Amaranth itself , then The Gates is all about meeting them in a new light with different shades . If i could sum up what i'm actually trying to express using just one word , i would say that this book was an EVOLUTION - not only of the story line , not only of the plot , but also of the characters that are involved in this epic tale . . The plan and the warriors are ready to rock and roll . The gates to amaranth will be opened , but will they succeed in their mission or will unforeseen events strike tragedy and havoc ?? Answers to all these questions are there for you to read and find out .
Things i loved about this book : One word answer , EVERYTHING !!! Lats start off with Rachael Wade's writing style . The lady is a genius . She uses the right words , the right expressions , the right emotions - everything is just soo right . Honestly , i feel very few authors have the capacity to make the reader love or like a hated character . And Rachael manages to do just that with such a ease . Without giving away any spoilers i'll say this , i actually and i mean actually with a capital A , felt really bad and kind of 'Geez i'm soo sorry for you 'kind of stuff for one of the characters . And believe me when i say i found that character to be really cruel in the first book . * Read between the lines if you can * ! And when an author can actually do that , i think they've conquered it all . So , kudos to Rachael for that !! Next up , the story line . As i mentioned earlier , The gates is just soo well written and well sketched out , that i actually thought that this could be an awesome movie . * I was treating it like one - you know reading it with Popcorns and soda and all and i so hope we get to see it on the big screen !!! It had everything , it had me biting my nails like some super nervous freak , it had me giggling and all giddy like a school girl , and this one moment i actually fell off my chair .. The twists and turns in this book had me twisted and turned . Turned to what you ask ?? Turned into an impatient maniac . Especially the end and also the parts before the end , i just didnt see all of it coming !! I cant wait to find out whats in store for our vampiric warriors . Rachael a request doll - hurry up with the grand finale , the curiousity is definitely gonna be the death of me !!! LOL .
I highly reccommend this book to anyone who love vampires . In fact i recommend it to those who love vampires with a 'i dare to do 'attitude and that dont give a damn about tearing down your corsets and skirts when they are , well lets just say in the mood for some play time !! The resistance is finally reaching its epic end , come and be a part of it . You wouldnt want to miss this .
** This book was kindly shared by the author through 'Read It & Reap' Group for the purposes of review**
This second installment of the 'The Resistance Trilogy" was excellent! Another fast, action packed read.
Some of the characters that I was very interested in in Book 1 were definitely developed more in this book, and I was able to have a greater insight into the development of their individual stories, and how they came to join together in their quest.
It was very difficult not to see similarities with "Twilight". There is an urgency on both Camille and Gavin to bring their relationship to the next level, though only if they both join together in marriage. There is the tug of war between both characters on staying human or vampire, which I found very similar to the other series. And some of the conflicts or forces trying to keep them apart, similar to the obstacles Bella and Edward faced as well in 'Twilight'. But it didn't really take away from my enjoyment of this story. There was enough originality in this plot to help me identify it as a separate story.
Some of the reactions to situations were a little over dramatic for my taste. And some facial expressions mentioned in the book, ie. the multiple snickers, and sly grins, didn't seem to fit the particular scene as normal reactions of people interacting to the situations. It didn't bother me as much in the first book as it did in this one.
That being said, that is the only negative thing that jumped out at me in this novel. I enjoyed the development of all the characters, and the plot line. It was well written and interesting. The action scenes were flawless and fit the storyline. It was all well connected and fluid.
It was a really enjoyable read, and I look forward to the third installment of this trilogy.
I have so much to say about The Gates, but I am going to keep it rather brief so that I don’t spoil anything for those of you that have been waiting to read it.
I waited rather impatiently for months to get a chance to find out what happens to Camille and Gavin in the second installment of the Resistance Trilogy. I felt like I was left on edge after the completion of Amaranth, wondering what would happen next. After reading The Gates, I feel exactly the same - I can’t wait for the next installment so that I can find out what happens!
Twists and turns keep the pages turning (even when you’re still up reading at 4 am because you can't put it down until you find out what happens next). It’s also very easy to become invested in the story, which is what I love the most about Rachel Wade’s writing. Her stories are not merely stories, they are journeys. Her characters are so very real and you can’t help but ache for Camille and Gavin, loathe Samira and adore many of the characters in the Resistance group. Above all, I love how you can’t predict the next page. I grow very bored with stories that seem to follow a predictable story line – The Gates does anything but.
Overall, I would recommend The Gates to anyone who loves vampire romance novels but is tired of the same-old-vamp-romance-story. The Resistance Trilogy takes an interesting approach to the vamp romance and the action is definitely more suspenseful than many of the other books I have read in the genre.
I would like to add one other note, however. I would not recommend The Gates for younger audiences. There are some explicit scenes in there – not enough to qualify it as erotica, but definitely some hot and heavy stuff that you wouldn’t want younger readers exposed to.
Rachael Wade has done it again. The Gates is another fantastic addition to the Resistance Trilogy.
First of all, this book really steps up the romance. I felt the romance between Cam and Gav was a little lacking in the first book but Rachel has certainly remedied that. I loved the heat and passion between Cam and Gavin. Hot! Hot! Hot!
The plot was excellent. Rachael has also stepped up the action in this one and it was a thrill from cover to cover.
And even with the romance and action, Rachael can still make you laugh. I loved the scene where Cam gets drunk! "Please, let me take you home. You're drunk." "I am not." I shoved him, spilling some kind of delicious poison on him. "Go home and have a wild time with Ms. Scarlet. In the bedroom. With the--" "Okay, you're starting to talk board game. Let's go home, babe."
Also, my thoughts on the cover. I love how Rachael has related this cover to the book: I rushed toward the windmill as I eyed the strange red sun, peering behind me every so often to make sure I wasn't being followed. All it would take was one witness for word to spread to Scarlet of our meeting. "Gavin?" I whispered as I stepped inside and secured the wooden door behind me, pulling my cloak's hood down to peer around
All in all, a wonderful read. If you liked Amaranth, you will love this one!
I received this book for review from the Shut Up & Read group on Goodreads.
As you may know, I absolutely LOVED . Rachael Wade has a way of pulling you into a story and making you feel like you're along for the ride.
Same thing goes for The Gates. We hop back into the story where we left off and it's non-stop from there. Camille and Gavin's romance heats up and gets tested in ways you wouldn't even think of. We find out more about the characters that we were left wondering about in Amaranth.
While reading Amaranth, Camille came off a little too much as a victim but we get to see a side of her in book 2 that is a nice change. It's not enough that it's unbelievable, she's growing and it's completely natural.
I would recommend picking this book up the second it comes out. Which, by the way, is April 25, 2012. And if you haven't read Amaranth already, what are you waiting for?
Back to patiently waiting for the third and final installment.. *sigh*
I received a copy of this book from the ReadIt&Reap program in the ShutUp&Read group here on Goodreads. This is an excellent program, in which authors provide free copies of their ebooks in exchange for honest reviews.
Overall, I enjoyed this second book from The Resistance Trilogy. Like Amaranth, this book is a short, fast paced adventure. On several occasions, I thought I knew where the story was going, but Rachael Wade went in a completely different direction. It kept me on my toes throughout the entire book. The relationship between Camille and Gavin heats up, taking this into the Adult category (whereas Amaranth was Young Adult). The characters all seemed to develop naturally and react as I would expect, given their circumstances.
As with the first book in this series, I have an issue with the continuity of The Gates. For instance, on multiple occasions, the story is moving along and then the next paragraph - not next chapter, not next section, next paragraph - is weeks later.
After reading this book, I am definitely looking forward to the final book in this trilogy. I give The Gates 3.5 stars.
Over all I thought this was a good book with a creative, original plot line and back story. It was a nice quick read.
The relationship between Gavin and Camille is very well established and the reader is able to see with clarity, how they feel for one another. I might have enjoyed seeing a bit further into Gabe and Audrey's relationship as well.
The action scenes and the villain Samira deliver and the little twist with her in the end is quite nice and not expected.
Aside from a little more character development for the extras my only real sticking point was Vivienne's accent. And I certainly won't criticize that very much because let's face it, typing any accent is difficult, but typing a cajun/ voodoo woman accent has to be daunting at best. I live in South Louisiana so I know quite well what it sounds like but translating it to paper seems like an intimidating endeavor. It was just a little off for my tastes.
March- So looks like I didn't have to wait until April! Wow I must say that was even better than the first. I do not want to give anything away considering it doesn't come out until April, but by golly that was good. There is a bunch of action and a BUNCH of love.
Gavin and Camille never seize to amaze me. Their relationship is true and honest. In The Gates, their love will get tested. And oh it made me mad but that's all I'll give away!
The second book was just as great as the first book. I really like the way that this author keeps the plot from getting boring and generic. The characters were fully developed. It was east for me to read and enjoy. I liked the mixture of voodoo and vampires. It was nice to see a twist on the vampire world. One twist was the vampires being able turn back into humans. That was definitely not something that I would have thought of to use for a vampire novel. I am excited to read the last book in the trilogy. I cannot wait to see what becomes of Gavin and Camille's relationship.
Now folks I know that some of you may have read my mini-review back in February when I finished the book. But I also know that there will be those that didn't. So if you are one of the ones that did, please bear with me if I seem to be going over the same things as I did back then.
Firstly, my cover-art magpie side tells me to address the cover for THE GATES. So, let's get to it. The cover for this is slightly darker than that of AMARANTH. This has a less ethereal quality to it than Amaranth did. It's slightly more edgy. I didn't understand the symbolism of either cover at first. It wasn't until I read the stroies I understood their covers. So for me, having read this, I now look at the cover with fresh eyes. It really appeals to me and I love the things that were chosen to depict this great story.
"She's gone on long enough about the cover" I hear you shout. Okay, I will get on with my review.
As with the cover, the story itself was slightly darker this time. Though just as alluring as Amaranth was. It was an action packed story that had me on the edge of my seat and staying awake late at night just because I was so captivated and couldn't stop turning the pages. THE GATES has a mixture of love, happiness and joy, sadness, loss and sorrow. For me, it is the perfect amount of all of those things. It's not too 'fairy-tale love, fingers down throat etc'. But it's also not too much the other way either.
I love the whole Gavin and Camille relationship. They have a love that transcends everything. They may not have been together long but they are strong and battle ready. Which really is a good thing when you add the nasty little wretch Scarlet into the mix. I can't tell you who she is, or why I hate her. All I can say is well done Rachael. I hated Scarlet. I think she was added in like putting a cat amongst the pigeons. You'll never achieve a sense of equilibrium with Scarlet around. She was a minx and I despise her, but she was written well and the character fitted perfectly within he story. I hope we see more of her, but I also hope that one day Cam gets to tear her limb from limb. That would be a sight to behold! (hint hint Rach)
Her Majesty, Samira, is just as evil as she ever was. If not worse. We get to find out a secret she has kept from Gavin for many years. It reminded me just what a horrible woman she is. She brings a whole new meaning to the term cold-hearted *****!
The main bright points for me were the times when Gav and Cam were able to be alone and show each other that throughout anything and everything, their love can remain strong. It brings a new meaning to the phrase "Love Conquers All".
This book is action packed. Full of twists and turns that shock not only the characters but the reader too. The tear flowed for me at just past the halfway point. I swore I would not cry but my eyes betrayed me. The phrase "It never rains, but it pours" springs to mind. There was never just one thing to get over, instead there were almost too many. I didn't think my heart could take any more of a beating. But just when I thought it couldn't take any more, the story was over and I was going to be okay after all. I stayed up late into the night to finish this and found myself shattered and owed a big long sleep. I just couldn't put it down. Even when I knew I was tired and must go to bed, I still pushed myself beyond that. Such is my dedication to a good book? Yes. But also, such is my impatience to know what happened next!
I won't tell you more as I find my fingers are itching to run away with me and become too 'spoilery' and I know you would never forgive me for ruining it for you. All I can say is, I am really very happy that Rachael gave me an ARC. I am forever grateful to her. However, the one downside of having a book so early before its release, I will have to wait even linger for the next one!
I cannot wait for The Tragedy of Knowledge (book #3). Knowing Rachael, she will make it one hell of a kicker so that the trilogy goes out with a BANG!!
Sometimes trilogies suffer from second book syndrome, you know what I mean? Brilliant first book, highly anticipated second book that ends up being a little big of a let down. Well never fear, Rachael Wade's second book in The Resistance Trilogy is smokin' hott (yes, with a double T ).Wade never fails to amaze me, with the storyline hotting up, relationships sizzling and some fabulous world building going on, you will not be disappointed with this amazing second instalment.
Camille Hart now has the knowledge about what her boyfriend and his friends truly are and that hasn't frightened her off. Returning from Amaranth the plans swing into motion, to return to Amaranth under the pretence that Gavin will do as commanded and return to exile to do Samira's bidding, whipping the people back into submission, all the while earning Samira's trust.
Meanwhile the rest of the resistance will be preparing themselves to enter Amaranth on the next Crescent moon, to overpower Samira, ultimately getting their curses lifted and being free.
But as you can imagine, things never run smoothly. Scarlet, someone who was trusted and travelled to Amaranth as part of the Resistance, puts a spanner in the works. She gets wind of the Resistance's secret weapon 'Arianna' (Samira's daughter) and starts blackmailing Gavin to get what she wants, which is Gavin himself. Much to poor Camille's heartbreak, Gavin has to comply or risk the whole operation.
There are tons of twists and turns throughout the book and the last section is one big shocker. I absolutely cannot wait to see what Rachael Wade has in store for us in the final instalment. Bring on 'The Tragedy of Knowledge.' I highly recommend The Resistance Trilogy, if you haven't yet picked up the first 'Amaranth' then what are you waiting for? :)
My favourite characters:
Scarlet: I always love a villain and Scarlet is definitely one of those. She is warped, twisted, venomous and will use all the pawns at her disposal to get exactly what she wants. She is an ' IT ' girl and to be honest I would love to throttle her myself, what more could you ask for in a villain?
Gavin: I think Gavin really developed and came into his own in this book. We got to see a deliciously dark and seductive side to him, that I would really like to see more of (Hint Hint, Rachael LOL ) : D
Just some thoughts on the cover:
I always love the covers of Rachael Wade's books and once you read one you will see why. On the covers are always something significant in the book, like the first book: was the entrance to Amaranth, in all it's beautiful detail. The second book: Is Camille disguised in her cloak and the windmill hide away where she meets with Gavin in secret.
*Special thanks to Rachael Wade for the review copy*
If you have read Amaranth, you know that Camille and Gavin are quite not in a good situation. To be honest, it is really bad for them right now. They are going to rise up against the ruler of the magical world, Samira. They have plans, a lot of plans to make that work, but everybody knows how plans like that end. Bad. And even worse…
I liked Amaranth. I really did. I liked Camille as the main character and I liked Gavin, I liked the story lines, and I loved the cover. So I was really excited about the second book, and I got what I requested: more action. Even though this is romantic vampire book and I know it, I was kind of not interested in the love lines. They are good, and you can really enjoy reading them, but I didn´t. I was simply focusing on the adventures and actions scenes. I know that Camille and Gavin are important in the book and if course in the series, and their relationship is the main power moving the story, but I didn´t felt so strong for them. On the other hand, there also were a lot of scenes I really enjoyed, and I laughed and even cried. That much they were great. But there were also scenes I was just trying survive as soon as possible, because I didn´t like them and I wanted to get to more interesting ones. And then I got them, I mean the action ones and they became my favourite scenes in the whole book. They had everything I need from great adventure: passion, speed and power. But when I looked back to the story as one piece, there is quite nothing wrong with it. The bad parts are quickly changing into the better and book is one big ride.
There was one thing or maybe better word for that would be element, which is as perfect as in the first book. And that is author´s writing style. I fell in love with it in the first book and my love became stronger in The Gates. I admire her that she can spread that great with words everything she wanted and you will enjoy reading it.
Camille is really good heroine. During the reading, you are not thinking about the situation between you, Camille and a big pan. You actually can stand her and you like her, because she is strong and thinking heroine. Gavin is fine too, but there were a few bad moments with him and I am not happy about him as I could be. I sometimes do not like his behaviour to Camille. But when he is like really him, that great guy, he was much more acceptable and I like him. The other characters were really good too. Almost everyone has his space to show up, so you can pick your favourite one and love him…
The Gates is really enjoyable read and you can find whatever you like on a book in it: romance, super characters and really good adventures. Just to wait for the third book and her explosion...
3.5 Stars Camille is determined to stand by the man she loves as he works to save his people. Gavin is a vampire and he is leading a resistance to overthrow Samina, their powerful queen. But to do so, he and his small band of supporters must venture across the veil to her kingdom and the realm of Amaranth, where vampires go to reclaim their humanity.
In their travels, they reunite with old friends and uncover new enemies. But the relationship between Camille and Gavin is the driving force of the story. Unfortunately, Gavin refuses to seal the deal until they are married. He says he wants to prove to her how special she is to him. This was not only bad news for Camille, but bad news for me as well. Instead of striking a romantic chord, it left me irritated and frustrated. This was even more true after the introduction of Gavin's ex, Scarlet, who makes no secret of their sexual history or her desire to have him back.
I empathized with poor Camille, as Gavin pushed away her advances and ignored her concerns about Scarlet. And frankly, it wasn't until Camille and Gavin finally got physical that I stopped being annoyed. Not because I was dying for the scene, but because the whole waiting-thing felt so heavy handed. Like I was reading a YA book, a genre I generally avoid. I didn't like Gavin getting to make this decision on his own, as if Camille were a child or an unequal part of the relationship. And then when he did finally decide it was time for them to be together, it felt totally arbitrary, like it was an unnecessary hurdle all along.
Moving on. I'm really interested in Gavin's adopted sister Arianna and her story. (And I haven't given up hope that her man, Joel, is somehow still alive and planning a comeback in book 3.) In fact, the secondary characters are fleshed out and interesting in general, which helped when the primary romance was ticking me off. I like the world-building and I really feel like the author is building toward something big for the Resistance. She has managed to deliver some pretty good surprises so far.
Despite the whole sex thing, I do like Gavin and Camille and hopefully now that we're past that issue, I can enjoy them together. I look forward to see how the trilogy will end. 3 1/2 stars.
I had also read & reviewed Amaranth, the first book in this trilogy, and I had loved it but The Gates definitely feels like a step-up! I had been DYING to know what happened next with Gavin and Camille, since they're my favorite characters. Camille is such a kick-ass female character that you don't usually see too often (but I'm noticing more in the YA genre now, thank god), and Gavin is the hot and steamy guy character that everyone loves to read about. ;)
Once again, Rachael did an amazing job with the world and character building that started in the first book. Where Amaranth left off with a cliffhanger, The Gates picks up where the story left off and we find out what happens next, and there are again a lot of things that happen that I can't say without giving away spoilers!
I enjoyed reading this one more than the first book, probably because as with every 2nd book in a series, you already have the backgrounds/info on the characters, so you can just jump right into the story. I highly recommend this book, especially if your craving for action and romance.
First things first. This sequel rocked! The story grabbed me from the start and just kept getting better from there. Gavin and Camille are back. They are on the brink of organizing a resistance to free the Amaranthians from Samira's hold. With the help of some hoodoo magic, Gavin, Camille & other vampires are able to travel back to Amaranth safely. With this magic, it prevents Samira and her servants from harming them while in Amaranth. Their mission is to round up support from the Amaranthians, all unbeknownst to Samira. The war is indeed coming. However, among their group is a traitor, a true villainess. As the story progresses, it becomes pretty obvious as to the identity of this hussy. Ok, so I'm not really hiding the identity well, but I can't help it. She just made my blood boil. Ugh!
The story takes a few twists and turns along the way, but it was all extremely entertaining. I love the main cast of characters. Gavin, Camille, Audrey, Gabe and Josh were all excellent. The story was brilliantly told and I cannot wait for the third installment. :)
I received a copy of this book from Rachael Wade to review. I reviewed the first book and loved it. The sequel lived up to my expectations. =) I'm so glad to be back in the comfort of Camille and Gavin. I love those two together. Although, in this book, they went through some trials. I felt terrible for what Camille was put through because of certain female that Gavin used to be with showed up in this book and made it difficult for both Gavin and Camille. Camille took it very well though. I'm very impressed the way she was in this book unlike, the first book when she had been put through hell in relationships and would just run away from the situation. In "The Gates," she stands up more for herself. She even helps Gavin out with the Amranthians. "The Gates" is all about preparing for the Resistance. It's also all about going into Amaranth and getting the Amaranthians on board with attacking Samira. They're forced to deal with situations that they weren't expecting though.
The Gates was an incredible sequel to to Amaranth. The book was one of my favorites of 2012 so far this year. The Gates returns with all of the characters from the first book, and a few new characters. Out of the new characters, I liked Cecile the best. She is very kind and helpful. I couldn't stand Scarlet. I think that she is more evil than Samira in the way she manipulate and deceives people. The characters have matured a lot from Amaranth to The Gates. There was a lot of plot twists and turns in this book. Some of the plot twists made me mad. Other plot twists made me laugh and cry. I think the author's writing has also matured a lot from book one to book two, which is saying something because book one is absolutely amazing. The Gates left a lot of questions unanswered. I am dying to read book three, The Tragedy of Knowledge, and get the answers to what I want to know. I recommend The Gates to everyone that has read Amaranth. If you haven't read Amaranth, you should pick up both books and read them. Trust me, you won't regret it.
This book begins where the first book ended, picking up in a big way. In my opinion, The Gates is better than the first book. Camille and Gavin’s love is tested and there are some steamier scenes. Wade developed every character; I really love that she did this because she created such great characters. The plot twists and turns were predictable at times, but truly surprised me at others. I had a hard time putting this book down and probably stayed up too late reading almost every night. Most importantly, for me, this book is not a typical vampire story. Twilight-like books have flooded the literary market in some respects, but thankfully, The Gates is not one of these books. Some aspects from Twilight do appear in this novel, but Wade navigates them in a unique style. Camille is no Bella and Gavin is not Edward. This book would most probably be most enjoyed by a female, young adult audience. It would be a good book for a club because it is so fun to read and discuss. Five stars!
This series was surprisingly good, I thought they were going to be the predictable story line between human girl and vampire boy, girl loses boy, girl gets boy back, blah blah blah but I was wrong. The second book in the series start where the other one ends and Camille who started off as this timid abused person becomes someone who fights to be with the one she loves. Gavin is the ultimate gentleman and refuses to sleep with her till they are married which sounds like twilight but there the similarity ends. An uprising is coming and Gavin is leading the charge to overthrow the queen and rescue the people of Amaranth. Arianna is the daughter of the queen Samira and there is a lot of unresolved feelings towards her mother and she wants vengeance for her lost love. Lots of twists and turns and I look forward to the next book in the series.
Oh wow how anyone can give this less than 5 stars I hated to put this down. I can't say anything without giving away the story plot so I will concentrate on the characters. I am still so in love with Gavin and Gabe, Camille is still crazy awesome. This story has such action I could picture every step from the gates of Amaranth to the fights and destruction and the looks on their faces from Samira to Scatlett and beyond the rest. I can imagine listening to Vivienne talk in her accent I caught myself doing the same. I also caught myself talking with a french accent in my at some points. So getting back to the book I so recommend this to everyone who loves action and vampires and a little Love and romance thrown in the mix. Rachael you have done well and I am looking forward to Part three.
The Gates, Book 2 of The Resistance Trilogy by Rachael Wade
Five stars!!! What a great follow up to Amaranth! Wade jumps right into the action and fills us in on enough to bring us back into her world without bogging down her fast paced storyline.
I’d forgotten how much I liked her character development and quick dialogue. The world of Amaranth is so real I feel like I can step right into it. The descriptions are fabulous without being too lengthy and her ability to evoke emotion is wonderful. Even I felt something for our evil queen when her story came to light.
I never like to give too much up about a book for fear of spoilers, so I’ll make it simple. Buy this book!
WOW! Its hard to put words together to describe how I felt when I read this book. I am so very happy! This book pushed above and beyond any expectations I had for it. Everything flowed so well, from begining to finish, it gripped me and kept me wanting more. The chemistry between Camille and Gavin was just explosive! Honestly, I thought going into the book it would be semi-steamy, that is not the case here! Marriage! Sex! "Forget The Damn Dress!" I just melted and loved every single minute of it <3 Whether you have read Amaranth or not, this is DEFINITELY not a book to miss! Iam already getting ansy waiting for the 3rd book, Tradegy of Knowlegde, to make its appearance!!
