What will it cost him to save her from the flames?

Veteran and therapist Natalie Atkinson is all about facing fears and surviving. After all, she’s been there, done that, and she’s ready for a new future in Last Chance County. Even if it includes helping the incoming Fire Chief confront his own issues to lead his fractured team.

Fire Chief Macon James has finally come home to do the job he’s always longed for, and he doesn’t need a therapist interfering with the running of his crew. More, she’s put them in jeopardy by insisting she “train with them”—a liability that might just get them killed. The way he sees it, she’s just another counsellor, interfering in ways that destroy lives.

When an explosion destroys her car it seems Natalie is a magnet for trouble. Is she the target of a stalker? Macon has no choice but to stick around and find out. But getting close to Natalie means discovering her secrets…and risking the chance she’ll discover his.

But her so-called stalker isn’t giving up. And when his worst fears ignite, with Natalie right in the middle, Macon will have to become the leader the team so desperately needs if they hope to save her life.

The second breathtaking book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series!

Expired Hope was an action packed suspense story woven with a great romantic thread. I really liked the two main characters, Natalie and Macon. They both carried guilt over past traumatic events that impacted not only their daily decisions, but also affected the way they viewed themselves.

There was so much tension on the fire crew! It was interesting to read about the way Natalie worked with the crew to understand what they went through on a daily basis. I really felt for Chief Macon James as he struggled to gain the crew’s loyalty. The danger and suspense in the story kept me anxiously turning pages and I enjoyed the way the romance grew between the main characters.

This is the first book that I have read in this series, however, I did not have any trouble at all picking it up and reading it as a stand alone novel. I do look forward to reading future books in the series, as well as going back and reading some of the earlier novels, too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The firefighting team of Last Chance County are passionate about what they do, experience the danger of their job, and still struggle to find the balance between facing the risks and becoming a working family.

As a reader, I could feel the longing of all the characters to belong and be accepted, but also the fear of being rejected and hiding behind this wall of distance. The author handled the subject of counselling and emotional healing well, with the benefits and dangers clearly shown.

The action was never ending and created a fast-paced suspense.

It was fun catching up with the characters from book one, but you won’t be lost starting with this book since it can be read as a standalone.

Another great book by Sunrise Media. I am looking forward to continuing the series.

This second in the series focused on firefighting, suicide and counseling. A bit lighter on the suspense than some romantic suspense novels, but an enjoyable read. Look forward to continuing the series.

Can they work together long enough to stay alive?

Over the years I've read a number of Lisa Phillips' novels and I have enjoyed each one of them. When I see her name on the cover I have no hesitations and simply dive in like I did with Expired Hope, which is why...

I'll be honest, I didn't even realize that Lisa Phillips wasn't the sole author of Expired Hope until I saw Megan Besing's name at the top of the author's note section at the end of the book. The flow was so seamless that there was only a second or two when I almost subconsciously thought there might have been the vaguest of differences to the feel of the story. I was quite impressed when I figured it all out at the end.

As anticipated after reading the first Last Chance Fire And Rescue novel, Expired Hope turned out to be one exciting story. There was no let up for the characters, not even for a minute. Multiple mysteries or maybe just multiple threads of the same mystery keep them hopping and me turning the pages of my ereader. The emotion woven into the story also kept that very important element intriguing and relevant.

Megan Besing may be a new to me author but after reading her addition to the Last Chance Fire And Rescue series I will be keeping my eye out for more...

(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Expired Hope
By Lisa Phillips with Megan Besing
Book 2 in the Last Chance Fire & Rescue series
Rating: 4.5/5

Having never read anything from Lisa Phillips, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book she co-wrote with Megan Besing for Sunrise Publishing. I am a big fan of Sunrise, and this series did not disappoint. The nonstop action and high stakes suspense was so well done and kept me reading. The characters were well written and fleshed out. The romance was believable and not rushed. Faith aspects were woven throughout.

Highly recommend this adrenaline-pumping Christian romantic suspense novel that can be read as a standalone although it’s part of a series! You will want to go back and read the first book and I definitely can’t wait to read what comes next!

My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

Another great read in the Last Chance County world. Megan Besing is a great author addition to this world and I can’t wait to hear more from her. This book brings us into the lives of Natalie and Macon. As you watch their relationship blossom and grow you are caught up in the action and intrigue that is going on around them. We see some favorite characters making appearances in this book and hope to see more in later books. Don’t want to spoil it so take a chance on this book.

The thoughts are my own and I did receive an advanced copy of the book for review purposes.

Fire Chief Macon James sure stepped into a mess when he is hired to lead this discordant company of the fire station of Last Chance County to serve the community. To top it all off, he is under scrutiny to determine whether he will stay or go. The final obstacle to being sworn in as the new fire chief is therapist Natalie Atkinson. She must evaluate all of the team, including him, to assess whether he can lead them or not. Given his prior experience, this is not an easy thing for him.

Both Macon and Natalie have painful pasts and at first you wonder if they will be able to trust one another and find some common ground. But, as threats escalate against Natalie, Macon finds himself wanting to protect her and desires to have more of a relationship with her. Watching them let down their guard and share their fears with each other makes you see that they are going to be a dynamic couple.

If you enjoy romantic suspense with a thread of faith throughout the story, you should read this book. It is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

What a thrilling roller coaster of a ride Expired Hope is. Macon and Natalie both have painful pasts and obstacles to overcome. Macon wants nothing more to become the chief of Eastside, but how can he be when the Eastside fire crew refuses to work together as a team.
This novel is filled with nail biting tension, romance, danger, and suspense with a lot of explosive action. Megan Besing did a wonderful job adding the topic of PTSD into her novel.

I really be enjoyed, and highly recommend this high octane inspirational romantic suspense. The reader is immediately drawn into the lives of Macon James, who is aspiring to be the fire chief and Natalie Atkinson, counselor, who is assigned to get to know and sign off on his team.

I love how flawed people trying their best can come out ahead together and because of faith lessons learned along the way.

"If he only knew who he was speaking to. "Hate to break it to you, but we're all a little broken. Some just hide it better." Like she had to." PTSD was one of the topics worked on in this story.

How the fire crew became a team and were forged through life and death experiences and eventual respect.

Readers of inspirational romantic suspense will love this page-turner by Lisa Phillips and Megan Besing! Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

Loved this one. Macon wanted to prove his worth and he was not giving up. He was a good man that was stuck in his past and just needed a little push to finally move on. The same applies to Natalie. She was strong even when she thought she wasn't. I loved them, their relationship wasn't meant to happen but it did and they tried to resist each other but couldn't. Macon never gave up on her, I loved that

Expired Hope is the second book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series, but can be read just fine as a standalone.

Right from the start, this book drew me into the action... and that action didn't let up throughout. Just when I would think the story was starting to wind down, a new and unexpected twist would keep me guessing again! And I enjoyed every single minute. A lot was going on, but it never felt too busy It was just enough to keep me interested in the action.

While I enjoyed both the suspense and the romance in this story (both were done wonderfully), I think I most appreciated how it took on the subjects of PTSD and mental health. It did so in a way that felt genuine and seemed to normalize the need for counseling and the idea that it's okay to need help to deal with the tough stuff.

Overall, I thought this was a great read and one that fans of Christian romantic suspense are sure to want to check out.

**I received a copy for consideration. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the first book in this series and was thrilled to pick up this one as well! The action and suspense are fast paced, making the story hard to put down. I thought that the authors did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life, as they struggle with their pasts and try to form a future. I love when authors team up to write a book like this, since it is interesting to see how their styles blend. Lisa Phillips and Megan Besing did a great job with this book!

This story is explosive with suspense and romance. Fire Chief Macon James is trying to do the best job he can, but Natalie Atkinson’s is standing in his way. She’s a therapist that needs to write an evaluation for his team. But she needs his help to stay alive.

I love this nice blend of suspense and romance. It’s got a bit of forbidden love mixed with run-or-your-life danger. Macon is a gruff guy that has a heart of gold, and I love how he falls for the therapist that holds his career in the palm of her hand. This is another fantastic story in the series!

Expired Hope
Last Chance Fire and Rescue #2
By Megan Besing and Lisa Phillips

Macon James feels he has to prove himself to everyone in last Chance County. After messing up as a teen, he knows it will be an uphill battle, especially when he hears that some people were against his hiring as Fire Chief. Worse, his crew is in disarray, and it isn't getting better. Can he figure out how to be the chief his station needs before they lose someone else?

Natalie Atkinson's life is in rebuild mode. First, her Army career was over after she didn't see the signs of a soldier in distress. Then she had to deal with a patient who turned into a stalker. And now, she has to evaluate the fire crew that just rescued her from a burning building. Could things get any worse?

Unfortunately for both Macon and Natalie, things are about to get even more complicated. And they just might need what the other has to offer if they hope to heal from the past and do what they need to, to move on. But there are some lines, such as admitting to past failings, that are just difficult to cross. And vulnerability is something neither does well, ever.

Expired Hope is the second book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series and it takes up shortly after the conclusion of Expired Return. But there are a few months between the two books - enough time for things at the station to get even more problematic than they had been. So there is a bit of unknown that is referred to as the story progresses, helping to explain the tensions that all are feeling. I find it interesting that Natalie is as much in need of her own services as Macon and the other members of his crew.

As hope of improvement seems an empty dream or promise, a crisis just might be what they all need. But how do you plan an event to draw people together without widening the chasm that has driven them apart before they ever got a chance to come together?

This was a page-turner that did keep me up way too late (as in no sleep at all), but it was so worth it. The story moved at a good pace and definitely threw in some unexpected twists so that one could not determine just who was a threat. I would recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense. This book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone title, but it would read better if you read Expired Return first. But no matter how you read the book (or series), this one will draw you in from the opening scene!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This is another great installment in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series. Natalie Atkinson is veteran and therapist. She is suffering from PTSD herself, and she has self-tortured herself about the loss of a fellow soldier for which she feels responsible. She is at the home of a patient when she and the patient's son are trapped in a bedroom due to a fire. Fire Chief Macon James saves the day and their lives from the fiery house. This is their first meeting.

When Natalie is assigned to evaluate the firehouse, they have their second meeting. He is unpleasantly surprised. Macon James holds a therapist from his past responsible for the destruction of his family, so he does not put out the welcome wagon. Natalie immediately senses the tension in the firehouse amongst the crew. They have suffered the loss of a fellow firefighter, and they cannot get their mojo back. Macon is holding the position of fire chief as a probationary status and Natalie literally holds his future in her hands. He also feels that he has some firemen/firewomen who do not respect his authority and do not want him in Last Chance County.

The authors are not afraid to avoid touchy subjects like suicide, drug abuse and PTSD, but they handle these issues with grace and delicacy without downplaying the seriousness of each issue. The characters are very realistic with real world problems and flaws. There is plenty of suspense with exploding cars and hostage situations, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. The crew at the fire station had their own struggles, and they needed to learn to work as a cohesive unit. This made the character engagement and development more interesting as you saw each character grow throughout the book. A couple of shocking twists will throw you for a loop.

The characters were flawed, but learned to lean on their own strength, the strength of those around them and their faith to carry them through. There were times that the emotionality of the story and the characters' stories brought me to tears. It is a satisfying read for readers who love a romantic suspense novel with tension between the characters, and a little mystery mixed in.

Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am in love with this series! It’s definitely full of action and suspense plus a good dose of romance as well. Nothing you wouldn’t expect to see in a Christian fiction novel though. It’s all good and clean.

This is book two of the Fire and Rescue Series but we’ve seen some of these characters in the Last Chance County series as well. All the books are amazing just in case you need something to read.

In this book, we follow the new fire chief and his journey. He’s having some issues with his team and the powers that be have decided they need a review with a psychologist. Of course, that doesn’t set well with him because he had had a bad experience with a therapist before. So, he’s a bit hostile and has no reason to trust her or even want to work with her.

Things start escalating though and they’re thrown together more and more as someone keeps trying to kill Natalie.

NATALIE HAS HAD A HARD TIME IN LIFE TOO.
She was in the army and had to get out when some bad things happened and she didn’t follow protocol. And now she’s just trying to live her life. And keep everyone away from her.

I really loved this book. In fact, I have loved everything I’ve read from this author. The characters are superb. They reach out and grab you and make you part of the story. It’s like you’re sitting down with your best friends instead of merely reading a book. You really need to get your own copy of this book but do yourself a favor and get the first book and read it first. You should always read books as a series. And if you have some extra reading time definitely grab the Last Chance Country series too!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

"She lifted her chin. 'Tomorrow your crew is going to teach me how to be a firefighter'."

Excuse me. What? Fire Chief Macon James thought that he heard Natalie Atkinson say that she was going to shadow his crew through their training drills. The stubborn woman. . . . . . and he couldn't do a thing to stop her, her professional evaluation of his team's relational health was crucial for his job security. If only there didn't seem to be some sort of invisible tether between them, or was he just imagining the connection, ( he had saved her life, there was that )because a therapist was the last person he should be attracted to.

When a series of adverse events continue to befall Natalie, Macon is afraid that her independent streak will ultimately put her life in danger. She doesn't have to face hardship on her own, but wait . . .. isn't that what he has been trying to do?

"God's the perfect one. . . . You're not responsible for the things people do . . just what you do in response. . . . God is trustworthy. . . Let Him have the brokenness . . ...He's the only true Healer. No therapist can do what He can."

As Natalie and Macon struggle to lay down the guilt that they have been carrying on their backs for so long, feeling like they are never enough, readers will be caught up in their story . . . . Last Chance County has survived its name for a reason . . . . hope. . . . . that never expires.

Expire Hope is a Christian Suspense Romance by author(s) Lisa Phillips and Megan Besing. It is installment #2 of the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series.

Wow, each book gets even better in this series. Expired Hope begins with drama inviting the reader to keep reading. A house fire, PTSD from both war and duty and a little boy named Joey. Joey had been through a lot at his tender age and was still going through a lot.

Plus, readers will once again meet up with Allen Frees, Chief Macon James’ boss. Natalie Atkinson was a take-charge counselor for firefighters and was the chosen counselor for Chief Macon James’ crew. Chief Macon’s job was on the line depending on the counselor. Natalie had not expected to interview the man who had saved her life.

Expired Hope is the story of Chief Macon and Natalie Atkinson. It is also the story of PTSD, suicide, and drugs. I appreciated the tender way the authors wrote. I give Expired Hope 5*/5*.

Okay, full disclosure I was really confused when the book first started. I think it was because it was not the beginning I expected and the fact that so many characters were thrown at me at once. (Notice I still gave it 5 stars. Keep reading, LOL)

This is book 2 in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series, but I read it as a stand-alone. Beginning aside, I understood everything. It just took a little bit of rereading. If interested, I highly recommend reading the first book and then coming back to this one because it was amazing.

Now for my review:
I absolutely loved this book. I have never read anything by Megan Besing or Lisa Phillips but I can say that I will be searching for more books by each author. I finished this book the same day that I picked it up. I immediately was intrigued by Natalie as she seemed to have so much more going on then she let on. Macon was also a complex character that I immediately fell for. There is so much trama, but also so much healing.
This story was such a great Christian Romantic suspense and I am Here. For. It.

Such a great job well done.

Expired Hope is book two in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series. This is a joint effort between Megan Besing & Lisa Phillips. I have read the first book, but you can read this as a stand alone. It was good to see the Last Chance Fire and Rescue crew again. This is the story of Macon and Natalie.

Veteran and therapist Natalie Atkinson is assigned to evaluate newly dubbed Fire Chief, Macon James when there is tension after a death of a crew member. Both have baggage and secrets and neither want the other to see the flaws. Natalie is trying to start fresh away from a former patient who had no idea what boundaries were. However, Macon and Natalie's paths continue to cross when it appears that she has a stalker. Macon is determined to not let anything happen to her - even if it means he loses his job.

The authors did a great job in writing this story. The action is heartpounding. The book has some twists and turns that I was not ready for. I cannot wait until the next book in the series. Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

I enjoyed this exciting story with a lot going on, from fires to a possible stalker to an explosion and kidnappings! I liked how we got to know the characters at the fire station through a therapist's eyes as she tried to understand the dynamics between them and with Macon as the new chief. She and Macon also felt very drawn to each other but both were running in the opposite direction at first. Natalie really struggled with trying to help everyone, even people who weren't her clients and needed to realize she couldn't save everyone. Macon had similar struggles as he felt immense guilt for past mistakes. I enjoyed watching them realize that only God could be all they need while they also let themselves fall in love and imagine a happily ever after. I enjoyed the action as we saw multiple fires but also some harrowing situations in Natalie's life! I didn't feel lost with this being book two and not having read the first one. I would recommend this book!

""You don't have to save the world alone." Her words faded into a murmur, and she didn't know if she was talking to him or herself."
Natalie is a counselor who has been tasked with evaluating the fire department team in Last Chance County. There are just a couple of problems: one is her past which has made her fear aspects that fire fighters face, and the new chief, who seems to be the one she needs to evaluate the most. He intrigues and challenges her, making her wonder if maybe they are more alike than she knows.
This story kept me on my toes! It was so exciting and suspenseful- I couldn't predict what would happen next, or where the threats were coming from! I enjoyed the characters, especially Natalie and Macon. The team at the fire department were wonderful secondary characters, flawed but learning how to work as a team. I am looking forward to reading more in this series and enjoyed getting to read this installment!

Natalie Atkinson is the therapist assigned to evaluate Fire Chief Macon James and his crew before he can officially be sworn is as the new Fire Chief of Last Chance County. The action starts at the very beginning when Natalie is rescued from a fire by Chief James. The crew has several issues with becoming a team but that isn't the biggest problem, someone is trying to kill Natalie and the Chief is determined to keep her safe. Battling their personal demons from their pasts, she has PTSD from her time in the military and he has unresolved family issues that he blames himself for, the two work to overcome them and be the people that God wants them to be. They learn to trust each other and his crew learns to trust each other and be a "family." The story is full of action, suspense, romance, inspiration, plot twists and turns, redemption, second chances, and forgiveness. A great second book to the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series.

Okay, first, an explanation. I LOVED this book, okay, I really, really did! The only reason that I knocked it down a star, was because it took awhile for the story to get moving! It felt like we kept circling the same doubts and conversations over and over again.

And then, about 40% of the way through, the action picked up.

And it never let up from there! It was fast paced, it was character building and it was sooo so good!

I loved Natalie and Macon. I really enjoyed watching them grow throughout the novel, overcome their insecurities and become stronger by relying on God. By the end of the novel, you could see that they were ready for each other. I just loved the whole character arc.

I also really enjoyed getting to know the rest of the Fire & Rescue team! They are a complicated group but I was cheering them on the whole way! I loved seeing them come together as a family and I cannot wait to see what the next book has in store for them!

Expired Hope is full of action and keeps you on your toes to the very end. Besing takes you on such a fun journey, and of course having a hunky fireman makes it even more exhilarating to read! But not only is it intense, it’s got great character growth in it. Macon and Natalie have some things in their past that they just need to deal with – not necessarily in person, moreso mentally. And Besing weaves it perfectly between the pages of the book.

If you love fast paced story lines, nail biting scenarios, twists and turns, romance, and firefighters – this is the book for you. You don’t necessarily need to read book one in the series in order to follow along, however I would recommend reading it anyways because it’s great! I highly recommend Expired Hope. I can’t wait to see what comes next both in this series, and from Besing as a writer!

My thoughts: EXPIRED HOPE is the second book in the series. I didn't read book one, but this book stands alone. It is a slow read, one that takes time and doesn't come and go in a heated rush. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, though I didn't like Natalie at first. Therapists drive me nuts when they ask all those How do you feel about that? And Why does that bother you? type questions. However, she did turn into a likeable person when she started paying attention to the individual and not the list of questions. I liked the hero, he was hurting, and Natalie did help him get over the pain of the past. There is a suspense in there, though it too was slow and not really the highlight of the story. If you like firefighter stories with a touch of suspense and a romance, you might love EXPIRED HOPE. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.

I’m enjoying this series that takes us back to Last Chance County as we follow the Fire and Rescue Squad.
Not yet sworn in fire chief Macon James is trying hard to get the team to work together and get along when he’s given mandatory psych evals for the whole house. Macon isn’t a fan of therapists and would prefer he be left alone to lead as he sees fits.
Veteran and therapist Natalie Atkinson finds herself in need of rescue and comes face to face with Chief James. Will she be able to keep things strictly in the professional corner while she evaluates his team?
She wants to help people. He wants to rescue people. What could possibly go wrong? Or is it going right?
