Unshakeable: Trauma-Informed Mindfulness for Collective Awakening

Rate this book
A holistic system for gaining and maintaining the stability of mind needed for personal and social transformation, even in the midst of trauma—with simple, body-based exercises grounded in neuroscience and mindfulness, inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh

With three decades working in marginalized communities in the US, Israel, and the West Bank, mindfulness teacher and psychotherapist Jo-ann Rosen offers a wealth of wisdom and gentle humor in supporting people to access their inner strength and stability—even amidst outer chaos and catastrophe. Rosen draws on the example and practices of her teacher, the peace activist and Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, who founded Plum Village mindfulness practice centers worldwide as places of healing and restoration, to show how meditation can aid collective awakening.
Time and time again, even in places where trauma is commonplace, Rosen has seen that a regulated nervous system allows an individual to move from overwhelm and despair to stability and engagement. The Plum Village approach to well-being cultivates resilience while recognizing the unique social and ecological challenges of our times.
In Unshakeable, Rosen shares the methods by which we can broaden our resiliency, calm our nerves, and positively impact the collective consciousness. By following the practices in this book, we can find an unshakeable source of strength within, not only as individuals, but also as members of strong communities for positive change.

Rosen's book skillfully integrates neuroscience and Buddhist teachings to offer insights and tools for personal and communal well-being. Drawing masterfully on Thich Nhat Hanh's inspiring approach, Rosen links neuroscience and contemplative practice to provide a deeper understanding of both.

A particular strength is the body-based, trauma-informed approach to healing reactivity, aligning with Buddhist psychology. Such practices can ground us in our senses when we fall into ingrained reactive patterns. Rosen outlines concrete instructions for finding calm amidst inner storms.

In addition to personal practices, group techniques facilitate harmony. The open-hearted approach encourages resilience via neuro-informed contemplative methods. After establishing fundamentals of inner work, Rosen addresses interpersonal connections using sensible, effective communal practices that help co-regulate stress and inspire service.

Rosen offers trenchant analysis of collective dysregulation symptoms manifesting as social/environmental injustices, even in well-intended communities. I appreciated the allusions to Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beloved Community and Rosen's vision of an inclusive contemplative community.

In closing, despite wrestling with global problems, Rosen inspires us to stay grounded in our well-being via her neuro-informed approach. Final reflections elegantly explore the meaning of caring deeply for our world even amidst vulnerability and pain.

Overall, Rosen makes a valuable contribution integrating neuroscience and contemplation to cultivate personal and communal resilience. The diverse, trauma-informed practices offer concrete tools to find calm and connection. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in understanding and improving human flourishing themselves and others.
