Scarlet Lowell was my sunshine when all I could see was the moon and stars.
Until she wasn’t.
Finally free, and knowing there are apologies to make, I go to the only place that’s ever felt like home with nothing but her letters in the seat of my bike and a funny feeling in my chest.
I had a plan.
Give her the letters. Apologise. Walk away for good.
I expected her anger. I expected her to tell me to never show my face on the estate again. And I knew seeing her after so much time would fuck me up far worse than any prison sentence ever could.
But it’s Scarlet, and whilst I was locked away dreaming of the life I hoped she was living, she was lost in a completely different one.
What awaited me at the end of that lane, what I didn’t know and had missed, shattered my world into a million broken pieces.
She was my light. My good.
Now, I need to figure out a way to make them my forever.
I have been waiting to read this book since the part 1 got out. And i can say that their story couldn´t end a different way. We continue this duet with heartbreaking moments that made me cry so much, everything that the both of them went trough was so sad to read. Waverly is the best of both of them and it made me so happy to learn more about her. Scarlett and Lance will always have a piece of my heart, i didn´t know that a book could break me so much until i read their story. The wait was so worth it, as i knew, because she would never let any of us down. This book deserves all the stars in the world, my favourites now have their happy ever after after so hard times, it was about time. This book will make you laugh, cry, scream, but the best part that it´s worth your time. There´s nobody like them.
If you want to read this book i recommend reading the first in the series (The grand Pact) and The Promise Duet, but if you want to read Scarlet and Lance´s story read The Grand Ruin, it will ruin you completely.
Thank you so much to the author, J. C. Hawke for the Arc. If only she knew how i screamed when i got the mail and how many tissues i used while reading her books. She makes all her readers fell in love with what she writes.
The perfect ending 😭🥺🥺 I don’t know what to do now….
So I struggled to write this review. Not because I didn’t like it (because honestly it’s infinite stars ♾️) but because I don’t think I will ever have the right words to say how much I LOVE, like obsessively LOVE this book and series. This world she created has my absolute heart, I think it’s safe to say it’s in my top 3 if not number one out of all the series I’ve read. 💕 I do know this was my top read of the year 🫶🏼
For starters the story is so well written. I love the way JC writes, it has such a good flow and her characters are all simply amazing. To tell you than when I originally met Lance back in Grand Lies I truly disliked him. I didn’t think his character was redeemable nor that I would ever like him like at all. Lol JC said I’m going to make you eat your words, cause I absolutely adore him and he’s fighting for Mase’s number one spot.
To read Lance & Scar finally have their HEA 😭😭 literally made me cry. It was such an emotional read in the best ways possible. I was HOOKED from the start. I tried so hard to prolong the ending. I just want to live in this world. Waverly was the cutest, she had Lance wrapped around her finger… how could she not ?!?!? I really connected with these characters and just wanted them to be happy. I understood why Lance and Scar were the way that they were. Lol if you’ve made it this far, I hope you love these characters as much as I do. They’re the best and JC is the best 💜
Lance Sullivan 🥰🥰 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ Everything I could have hoped for and more. The Grand Ruin left me as an absolute sobbing mess. I was devastated for Lance and Scarlett. The moment I started this book I knew it would piece me back together. Scarlett and Lance were phenomenal together. They filled each other’s gaps perfectly. The entire cast of the series had supporting roles in this story that were written absolutely perfectly, and to top it off, Waverley. Waverley and her love for her father despite everything that had happened was what truly defined Scarlett’s character. Scarlett was phenomenal. I loved everything about her character, including her flaws. Lance was everything. He was broken in the previous book, but he was completely destroyed in this one. This was their story of healing and finding one another again. I loved it so much. I truly loved this entire series, but Lance & Scarlett are my favorites by far. Read the entire series - it’s amazing.
Part 1- Scarlet & Lance Scarlet is Mason’s sister, sick dad died, becoming a doc Lance is Masons friend. their friend grp has Elliot, Lucy, Charlie and Meghan too plus Mason and Ninas son, Elle. Scarlet & Mason fall in love over a span of a year, Mason doesnt know other friends do. Last scene of the novel- Ninas mother wants money and shoots Nina, Scar and Joey are in the room too scared. After Nina is shot Scar tries to give her chest compressions meanwhile Mason, Lance & paramedics arrive. Nina is taken to hospital. Lance thinks Joey standing w a gun shot Nina and put Scar in danger so he goes mad and shoots Joey, though he is innocent. Final ending of the book- Lance is going to prison. Charlie drives him to meet Scar at the Lowell estate. Shes waiting for him next to her parents graves. They tell each other goodbye and promise to remember each other. Lance makes her promise she wont be scared, will move on become a doc and remember falling in love with him at the sunsets.
Scarlet and Lance. Where do I even begin?!? I couldn’t wait for this book to come out and now I don’t want it to be over. Each time I swear the couple I’m reading about becomes my favorite, but Lance and Scarlet… nobody deserves a happy ending like they do!!!! I am so thankful JC was able to mend our broken hearts after the way the first book ended. I don’t want to put too much into my review and spoil anything. If you have ever thought about reading any of JC’s books I HIGHLY recommend reading every single one! You will not be disappointed!! You will fall in love with every character. 10/10!!! Thank you for allowing me to once again be an ARC reader.
If Part One of The Grand Rise broke my heart, then Part Two put it back together.
Every installment of the Grand Men series gets better and better. Lance and Scarlet are my absolute favourite couple. I think I highlighted half the book on my kindle. There are some pretty epic quotes.
We were left with a bit of a cliffhanger in part one when Lance rolled up to the Lowerwick Estate on his bike after spending seven years in prison. This book focuses on him and Scarlet finding their way back to each other, earning the trust and love back that they once shared with each other. No one ever loved Lance like Scarlet did, and you can see in this book that even after so many years apart, that short time together changed him. He’s still a broken man, but his love for Scarlet is just as steadfast. The MAN JUST WANTS TO LOVE HER AND BE LOVED BY HER. It is so hard to be angry with Lance. Even Scarlet thinks it’s hard. You just want to root for him. It’s so obvious they love each other.
He loved Scarlet so endlessly before. He worked so hard to protect his friends. He went to prison because he was protecting the woman he loves. He shut everyone out because he felt he didn’t deserve them because he was raised thinking that.
I think one of the most poignant quotes in the book that sums up this conclusion to the duet is, “𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚, 𝙎𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙣. 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙨.”
There’s a few huge/important plot points I’m skipping over because of spoilers. I think you just need to read it. Some of it won’t be a shock, but either way it’s damn enjoyable. Let’s just say I sobbed my way through bits of this book, laughed out loud at others, and felt complete adoration for Scarlet and Lance in parts. The ending nearly killed me.
I think lots of people will swoon over Lance but let’s not sleep on Scarlet!! She’s an absolute gem of a character. Smart and funny, surrounds herself with people she loves and a trusted female friend group, hardworking. Ugh. I love her. She’s so soft and rock solid at the same time. “Because good men exist, we sometimes find the very best of them, but good girls? Those bitches are for life.”
My heart now lives within the pages of Lance and Scarlets story.
I don’t think anyone has the power to rip me up and sew me back together with words quite like JC Hawke does. She’s done it with every couple she’s written about but this story was just so damn special.
The world that JC has created within her books is quite frankly one of my all time favorites. These people feel like home. They feel like my own chosen family. It’s not easy creating a fictional world that feels so safe but she manages to do it so flawlessly. To make me feel so so deeply. To make me feel so many emotions.
This second half to Lance and Scarlet had me bawling my eyes out within the first page. The mention of one name. The start of this story was a homecoming both on page and for my soul.
I have very few words for what this book did to me because it’s left me speechless. I feel both so complete and so empty. It’s rare I finish a book feeling that way but this book is the definition of one I could have kept reading for hundreds more pages.
I should have savored this one a little more. I ate it up in a sitting and I already can’t wait to go back and relive my favorite parts.
I have been waiting patiently for the second part of this book since May and let me tell you it was worth the wait. I was an emotional wreck throughout most of this book. Jess has outdone herself with this one! It was just the perfect ending to their story.
Broken Lance hurt my heart, he missed out on so much whilst he was away and honestly it was so emotional. The way he is with Waverley, the love he has for Scarlett and how he feels like he doesn't deserve any of it. 😭 Scar is such a strong FMC for all she went through whilst he was away. She overcome a lot of her struggles and insecurities, but she's so afraid to let him back in again because she's doesn't think she will survive, if he leaves a second time.
It was beautiful to watch him meet Waverley and grow as a father. And Waverley is the sweetest 7 year old. The scene with the baby bird had me cracking up and her speech in Bora Bora had me crying my eyes out. I loved all the found family vibes and seeing them all again with their own families. It got me so excited for Charlie's book, I loved what we saw of him and Lissie and I can't wait for their story.
I can't say too much of the plot without giving it away, but if you've read Grand Ruin, you will know your guna have to go through some pain before Jess fixes you.
The emotion Jess brought to this book was perfectly done. I loved how Mason stepped up as big brother while Lance was gone. I loved how close her and Nina become over the years and how Nina supported her when Waverley was born. I just LOVED everything about this duet.
It's no secret I've been waiting for this book since @authorjchawke released Grand Ruin and broke us all.. these two characters just have such a special place in my heart and Jess has absolutely done them both justice here. ♾️✨️
This book is part two in the duet & whilst the duet could be read as a standalone I'd highly recommend you read the Grand Lies/Love Duet & Grand Pact first as the time lines interweave and Jess has done it so cleverly and to perfection 👏🏻
Watching these two make their way back to each other was like going home. I love the whole friendship group so much, it's like your a part of them & all you want to do is root them all on. 💕 Loved watching Lance rebuild all of the relationships he let go. The trip he takes with Charlie & the after effects had me ugly laughing, & Waverley was an absolute cutey.. her little Bora Bora speech! IYKYK 🥺💜
Loved all of the little details that we were given on Charlie & Lissies future story too and you'll now find me in Jess' DMs pestering her already for this to be released immediately 🤭

Once again i felt like i was home going back to The Lowerwick Estate, I love Mase even more than i ever did and Man oh man does Jess tease us even more with our Charlie Boy…. that man intrigues me like no other…
Lance Sullivan won me over in The Grand Ruin but truly and fully captured my heart in The Grand Rise. He embraced Waverley with such warmth comfort and love and i could feel the awe he had for her. Their relationship and bond was heart melting and a joy to vision. And Scar - what a woman, her backstory and her journey through those seven years will truly break you, every bit of empathy is seeped deeply into you.
JC Hawke is fast becoming the queen of Angst. Her writing is even more incredible every time. The Grand Rise is beautifully, heart-breakingly flawless. She absolutely floods you with emotions like a tsunami. I sobbed my eyes out from start to finish. Your heartstrings won’t be just pulled they’ll be fully yanked. Some stories consume us but Lance and Scar is more than compelling, it’s obsessive and every spare second let alone minute you’ll have your head deep in these amazing words.
So deep breaths, prepare yourself for this magnificent Journey of love reunited.
Warning: you will need a whole box of tissues for this one!
I am speechless… I have been waiting since June after I read the whole series for this next one to come out. I am so blown away by this book and I am soooo very lucky to have been able to read this before it came out. Scarlett and Lance are definitely my favourite couple. They are meant for each other and their love for each other runs very deep. Not only did this book make me cry but it also made my heart happy.
JC Hawke has become one of my new favourite authors and this series will be one that I am definitely reading again. You will not be disappointed with this book. She out did herself with this book.
This is the second part of Lance and Scarlett’s duet and their love story will stay with me. I love the found family that JC Hawke has created and would recommend you read all of the books in the series in order starting with Grand Lies. It’s such a great series and Scarlett and Lance are my favourite couple of the 3 so far, they deserve all the happiness in the world. It was also so great to see the other couples with their kids in this book and I’m so so excited for Charlie’s story next
This story is another example to me as to why I love the second chance romance story so much. We had to work so so hard for Scarlett and Lances happily ever after and it was so worth it.
"The Grand Rise" by JC Hawke is an emotional rollercoaster that continues the gripping journey of Lance and Scarlet from the first book in their duet. Easily landing in my top reads of the year, this book stands out as some of the best writing I've read. Lance's return reveals a man torn apart since book one.
Without giving away too much, the book is packed with emotions that require a nearby tissue box. JC's writing beautifully captures the complexity of scenes between Lance and Scarlet, leaving me so feeling torn.
Scarlet, a character known for putting others before herself, finally gets the ending she deserves after selflessly giving to those around her. The ending of this book, is hands down one of my favorites. It is the BEST ending to their shattering journey. Rooting for Lance and Scarlet throughout, seeing them overcome so much hurt left me feeling so so happy for them!
"The Grand Ruin" and "The Grand Rise" belong on everyone's TBR. Trust me, these books are a must-read!
We are back with more Lance, Scarlet and their addition to the world! What an emotional rollercoaster this book brings us on… I don’t even know!
I loved it tho.
Second chances are my favorite, because you see two people fight to get back together. And that’s what happens here, and it was beautifully and had me in tears sometimes.
These books just have my whole heart! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of any character that JC Hawke comes up with and I know it’s not possible but I just wish this series and these characters could last forever. Scarlett has always been my favourite, even when she wasn’t a main character so this book and part 1 before have been an absolute joy to read. I’m looking forward to the next instalment with the next set of characters!
I have no words. This is a masterpiece. My heart is now fixed. I'll admit it was a bit touch and go at points. But I'm so pleased. Lance and Scar's story is stunningly beautiful but so full of hurt, pain, mistakes and finally acceptance. I will not say anymore but no one will be disappointed! Jess you are amazing!!
J.C. Hawke has done it again!! I have been waiting for this book ever since I read Part 1, the wait was worth it as this is everything and more that I needed.
This story continues with Lance and Scarlett, book 1 broke me and this story fixed me back together. Lance and Scarlett's love for each other is so well written that you want to climb into the book and be apart of their journey. This story had me gripped from the start and devoured in a few hours (I don't think I have highlighted so many moments in a book previously to this). To see them overcome so many obstacles to get back to the love they deserve of each other and themselves.
'You could break me, and I'm pretty sure I'd crawl back in pieces asking you to do it again'
If I could give Lance and Scarlett (and J C Hawke) all the stars I would. This duet will forever have my heart, if I could have a love like theirs it would be end game! Lance is so deserving of love and to see him broken was the hardest thing to read.
'where do we go from here?' 'Home, Evan if it takes us a lifetime to get there. We make it a promise, no matter what comes at us, to always make it home'
I was gifted an ARC read of this but as soon as the special edition paperback is available, I will be the first one to order!! The way J C Hawke writes her characters and hooks you in, is a gift that not many have!
If there was one series I would recommend to anyone who likes friends-lovers, heartbreak and healing, brothers friend, found family, all the feels - it would be this series.
Congratulations JC Hawke, I cannot wait for everyone else to be able to read the words you have wrote for a couple that feels so real.
Firstly, please ensure you've read book 1, The Grand Ruin, before this one...
I don't want to give away any spoilers, so here goes.
This book was everything I needed and more for Lance and Scarlet. As I expected before I could fully heal, I needed to be torn apart a little more before those jaggered edges smoothed out and everything became whole again. I cried, smiled, laughed, and felt every emotion that I read, even the anger.
This book drew me in and held me captive until I finished it.
Lance and Scarlet are the definition of soulmates. Even on their darkest days, their love kept pushing through no matter how hard they fought it.
The tests they face to their happy ever after were painful and bumpy, but they got there.
This series from JC Hawke is one I highly recommend.
This is perfection. My heart feels complete once more for these characters.
WOW just wow! This is probably my favorite book this year! There was so many emotions. I can’t tell you how many time I cried! Lance I did know I would love you more than Mason and Elliot. I letters were probably my favorite part. This man made her a library!!! I think the way they make there way back to each other is so perfect for them. They always had stuff in there way of being together. This showed them they would love each other no matter what and would come back together. 💜💜💜 JC Hawke it was hopelessly fucking wild!💜 This has definitely made my top 10 favorite books of all time.
This duet was exactly what lance and scarlet deserved! It was amazing to read how they find their way back to each other and how their love never went away even with all the time spent apart! There daughter had me laughing and crying the whole way! Especially the scene with the bird! This entire grand world has me captivated and I’ve loved reading everyone’s story’s and I cannot wait for the next one!
Thank you so very much JC Hawke for the ARC I jumped and ran around so excited when I got the email I was going to get to read it early! I can’t wait for what magic you bring to Charles story!

Essentially I have no words…..if that could be the review that would be it, but I promised J C I would try. I have loved this world since the very beginning and have always held these characters close to my heart. They are one of my absolute favorite found families and will forever feel real to me.
Before getting into the actual story I need to comment on the epic writing style that Jess has accomplished. There is this way that she conveys feelings, deep emotions, all encompassing environment and elite banter……it’s so impressive how seamlessly you feel enveloped by her stories. My heart was so full, so broken and then completely healed by this epic love story. I believe I felt so deeply because we had time to truly get to be invested in these two before it was their time because of their part they have played siince the start of the series.
Lance and Scar….what two amazingly developed characters. Both are so broken, yet completely and utterly perfect. There is such a sense of protection that you feel as a reader for these two and their journey’s separate and together. They are the epitome of “we must protect at all cost.” I was so in awe of the way they loved. It was so raw and at times felt so incredibly real. I think what resonates with me still is how I felt as though I was listening in on, spying on, these epically important and deeply emotional moments between two people who were fighting so hard to understand their love and their future.
Grand Rise picked up 7 years after the ending of Grand Ruin..although you got a sneak peek at the beginning of Ruin in the prologue. Lance has returned after years away and he is met by an extremely upset, yet unnervingly calm Scarlet. Lance knows what has happened was unfair, but he never wanted Scarlet to feel stuck. What Lance doesn’t realize is that she still hasn’t moved forward despite his efforts. The 7 years apart found Scarlet thriving in a new career but still stuck in a place fighting to breathe through the loss of Lance. Even though she has an immense amount of support through family and friends and a life on her family’s estate that is bustling with activity…she isn’t Scar. She is thriving, but not living….if that is even possible. So when Lance returns…..having him back is disrupting her life and Scarlet doesn’t know how to feel about it. She is so scared to allow herself to feel safe again with him, but she also doesn’t know how to NOT fall for him again and again.
Lance, this man….he has been dealt some awful cards in life. It took him so long to allow his heart to accept a love he never thought he deserved. The most heartbreaking moment for me was recognizing how much he reverted back to that man who thought he didn’t deserve to love or be loved. He didn’t think he was someone worth people waiting around for. Lance was so broken in so many ways and Scar was literally all he wanted and needed in order to be “saved”, but he loved her so much he didn’t want her to carry that “burden”.
They fell hard in Ruin, but I think I fell harder in Rise. I read this book in three sittings and each time I picked it back up I was able to be thrown right back into my emotions. The amount of tears I shed for these two was honestly a little disturbing, but I felt these feelings HARD.
I received the book at midnight. Needless to say I did not reach the suggested 8 hour of sleep that night. Anyone that read the first book and wait months for this would understand. I reread it a few weeks back though for a fresh up and I strongly suggest you doing the same. You can’t read this without reading Grand Ruin first!
“I was happy before you. But then I met you, and that happiness I felt paled in comparison. It was insignificant compared to the way you made me feel.”
In the journey of Lance and Scarlet, the first book left me immersed in a whirlwind of emotions—swooning, crying, laughing, and everything in between, ultimately breaking my heart. However, the sequel mends those shattered pieces.
Let’s talk about the Lowell-Sullivans ladies and gentlemen😉
Lance and Scarlet navigate a turmoil path to their “Happy beginning,” delivering on the expectations set by their journey.
“You really did a number on me, asshole. Maybe I’m crazy. But I know that there will never be another one for me if there is a you. […] I love you. Your sunshine”
Scarlet’s struggles are portrayed with authenticity, showcasing a love that endures even in separation. (and her letters to Lance really didn’t keep my eyes dry)Witnessing her as a mother adds an extra layer of warmth and to her character. Whilst here way of loving Waverly and Lance is genuinely sweet and admirable.
“You don’t have to fight anymore, sunshine. I’m here”
Lance, reprising his role as the perfect book boyfriend, introduces a new layer of charm, while the delightful addition of Waverly enhances the enchantment.
Moreover, as Lance and Waverly navigate this newfound connection, the narrative delves into the intricacies of their interactions—the shared laughter, the hesitant conversations, and the tender moments that gradually build a bond long overdue. Waverly, the adorable addition to the couple’s life, adds a layer of sweetness and innocence to their relationship, creating a dynamic that tugged my emotions.
The found family is an important part of the book, following the example of the previous books of the series. We got the witness every couple once again years after their book ended ( I adore extended times jumps in a series ) and even meet Lissie before her and Charles’ story gets released.
If I could add a few thing the mix , it would definitely be more scenes of the group / the boys all together as well as a deeper exploration of Lance’s struggles during his years of sentence. Exploring Lance’s challenges during his years of sentence could have added a powerful touch, offering a clearer understanding of his nightmares and generals the hurdles he overcame on the path to his “Happy beginning”- following Scarlet’s storyline with Waverly path.
In conclusion, the Lowell-Sullivans’ saga continues to captivate with its characters, and a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and lasting connections despite the hardships. The sequel not only mends hearts but leaves readers yearning for more🙏, making this series a true gem.
Indefinitely 🥰😉🥺

If you know me, you would know that I’ve been waiting forever for this book to be released because I needed to know more of Scarlet and Lance! Seeing the beginning of Scarlet and Lance’s story in ‘The Grand Ruin’ was a journey, I’ll tell you that, but as I read more of their story in ‘The Grand Rise’, it gives closure and it was beautiful.
If I were to tell you a quote that would most definitely describe Scarlet and Lance’s story it would be “A love like ours is a once in a lifetime thing—I'd never survive it a second time. And I don't want to.” I would go more into the details of it but I don’t want to spoil the story. Their story was genuinely beautiful and the feelings in this book really felt raw and real. It also showed most of their vulnerable moments with each other which I truly loved seeing.
Oh, Scarlet, I think my heart broke a little for her. After Lance is gone (not saying where as there are spoilers), she had became the person that she needs to be and we see bits of healing after he leaves, it was raw and heartbreaking. We see Scarlet as a mother her and Lance’s daughter, Waverley, and the way she had been such a wonderful mother for her is so special. Scarlet is such a strong character and I love her so much.
After Lance is gone for 7 years and comes back, his life is different where he learns that things had changed while he have been gone. My heart did break for him when he came back and lived the way he did. Until one day, he read the letters that Scarlet had gave him, where he finds out a (somewhat) secret which had resulted to him getting into an accident.
Moving on, there was times where my heart did break for Lance as he did what he had to do. When he is back at the estate, he also meets his daughter for the first time where they slowly build a relationship where their bond was so special. I love him.
When Scarlet sees Lance with his injury from the accident, she decides to take him to the estate and help him heal. Adding on, seeing Scarlet and Lance heal and work on having a relationship again was just written beautifully. The emotions that they went through felt raw and sometimes heartbreaking. I love Scarlet and Lance forever along with Waverley.
This duet will forever be a favourite and will hold a special place in my heart. This duet did had me in my feels so much that I won’t forget how J.C. made me feel.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series aka charlie and lissie (and I can’t tell you that I may already love them!)
I really don’t know were to begin and I’m also pretty sure I start every review on Jess’ books with the same sentence but WOW!!! Lance and Scars reunion was heartwarming, it was the perfect conclusion to their story. I was so desperate to have them back together but the fact it wasn’t sunshine and rainbows straight off the bat and was perfectly slow paced was even better.
Seeing them both adjust to being back in each others lives again both fighting to overcome the heartbreak and struggles that they have individually endured to finally become a family unit was just perfect. Lance loves Scar with everything he has and seeing him adapt to fatherhood was insanely beautiful, the bond between him and Waverly was the sweetest thing.
It feels like I’ve been waiting SO long and the minute I loaded it up I couldn’t put it down I was finished by the end of the night just like every other one of Jess’ books it was ADDICTIVE! It completely tore me apart to then put me back together it was better then I could have imagined Lance and Scar deserve the world and together with their beautiful girl they have that.
I can honestly say Jess has such a raw beautiful talent with her writing she has created this little world of people that I feel such a connection and pull too that it feels like home. Jess deserves all the recognition and praise for the books she writes and I don’t think she realises how much her words impact so many people. She’s left me feeling so full and complete knowing Lance and Scar finally got the ending they deserve but also empty needing more of this found family group of friends.
Reading the snippets of Charlie has me REELING and I know I will once again been stalking Jess’ socials for spoilers so to say I’m excited would be a huge understatement. If it wasn’t obvious by my review I couldn’t recommend this book enough you will cry, laugh, scream, swoon and cry that little bit more but I promise every single word is worth it 💙
This has been one of my favorite books this year. I have been waiting eagerly to read this book ever since I read part 1 The Grand Ruin. This book is a duet and shouldn’t be read without reading the first book The Grand Ruin. I also recommend reading the other books in this in this series as it just makes the story better.
I couldn’t have picked a better ending for Lance and Scarlet. Part 1 of this duet completely shattered my heart, but part 2 found a way to piece it back together. Scar and Lance were both hurt so deeply. From scarlet and what she had to face on her own while he was away. She’s had to overcome loss, insecurities, and struggles.
“A love like ours is a once in a lifetime thing—I’d never survive it a second time.”
To Lance who pushed everyone away because he didn’t feel worthy of love and thought he was doing what was best for Scarlet and his friends. “Lance, for a man who’s known such little love, you sure know how to give it”
While their relationship has been pushed to the edge, they always seem to find a way back to each other.
It was so special getting to see him meet Waverley and just how much she contributed to truly healing both her parents. Getting to see the relationship between Waverley and Lance grow was magical.
“And now I get to watch the two of them make and mend one another.”
I also loved getting to see how the other characters have grown and supported Scarlet and Waverley. The growth of Nina and Mason was amazing and getting to see their relationship with Lance and Scarlet evolve was great. The relationship between Charlie and Waverley was only a glimpse and yet pulled at my heartstrings. I am so excited for Charlie's book, I loved what we saw of him and Lissie and I can't wait for their story.
Thank you so much to the author, J. C. Hawke for the Arc in exchange for my honest review. If only she knew how many times I checked my email, and overly excited I was to receive Arc. She has had me enraptured since book 1 The Grand Pact.
5 ⭐️ 3🌶️ Tropes: found family, second chance romance, brother's best friend
When I reviewed the first book in this duet, I said this is the first time I have rated a book five stars but also begged you not to read it. The cliffhanger was too much - it would have hurt your poor hearts. But now it's complete, so you can dig in.
📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: The Grand Ruin and The Grand Rise, books 4 & 5 in The Grand Men series by JC Hawke.
📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Friends-to-lovers, forbidden romance (best friend's sister), second chance, all of the feels.
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Scarlett and Lance were never supposed to be a grand romance. She was caught up in darkness, abandoned by her family. He was seemingly carefree, but shouldering a heavy burden he never let anyone see. They try to keep things casual, but as their feelings grow, huge life events tear them apart.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: JC Hawke has really created something special with this first series. I've loved every one of the books in it.
Like so many British writers, these books are high on the tension and the drama. I, for one, love that. I love the angst and I love those plot twists. They might not be for everyone, but I am totally here for it.
Lance and Scarlett's story kind of surprised me. I wasn't really into either character. Both have some major flaws in the other books, and while I knew I would read this for sure, I wasn't sure I would like it as much as the other books. But JC Hawke has a way of making things unbearably romantic. She also has a way of making love stories not linear - these characters lose and find each other several times, and each time it just gets better.
The Grand Rise really finished out Lance and Scarlett's story well, and I don't want to give away spoilers, but the character growth with both of them was really done well. The spice, too... perfection.
I'm giving the duet a 4.5 star rating - The Grand Ruin was a five-star read for me, and I gave The Grand Rise a four-star rating. You might think I am crazy, but the four rating comes from one thing that legit urked me the entire time I was reading: In the second book, Lance gets into an accident that breaks a ton of bones including his leg... but the book takes place within two months and the entire time that man is pretty much unimpeded. I get the plot device, but there were so many times I was like "He's riding a SLED? HE HAS A BROKEN LEG" so I had to mark it down.
📝 𝗔 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲… These books are joined weirdly on GR and Amazon. To be clear, I honestly think you'll get the most out of them if you start at the beginning - but you can read each couple as a standalone. The series starts with Grand Lies and Grand Love, which focus on Nina and Mason, then The Grand Pact is Eli and Luce. The last book, The Grand Duel, is Charlie's story which will release next year.
This book was everything and more! The Grand Ruin, book one in this duet left us with a gaping hole in our hearts. Lance and Scarlett’s love was swift and fierce and just as fast as it came, it was ripped away equally as fast, left with a mountain to have to overcome to make it to the other side.
The Grand Rise takes place seven years later. Seven years of unanswered letters, refused visits…seven years of silence. Silence because they were better of without him..he doesn’t deserve any of them, he never did…right? He let her go so should could be happy because if she found happiness, even though it would hurt everyday he would bear it for her.
But what he forgot is that family isn’t always blood, it’s the people who love you and support you because they choose you, not out of obligation. Is it too late? When Mason tells him the letters have the answer his world tilts on its axis again.
Scarlett has risen from the ashes and although she isn’t whole, she has her family, her friends, and a beautiful little girl who loves her unconditionally. She loved Lance Sullivan once and losing him almost killed her…the thought of letting herself be vulnerable to that again is unbearable but when it comes to it she can’t walk away.
He’s so close, he’s hurting, and he needs to heal. Though she isn’t ready to let it all out there, she’s pulled to him. His sanctuary, his solace, his only peace is in her and now his other precious gift. But can she let go and let herself be vulnerable to love again?
Lance and Scarlett’s story is heartbreakingly beautiful. When two souls are attached to each other, they will always fight to be reunited. Through hell and back they found each other and love like that is rare and precious.
When you’ve experienced loss, the fear of the unknown is consuming, but to live in fear is not to live at all, so when you find a love like Lance and Scar’s, jump in, let go, for only then will you not have to be afraid anymore.
This was a story everyone needed to read in their lifetime. One of the many things I loved about Jess’s writing was her power to make me feel and man I felt every emotion deep in my bones reading The Grand Rise. This was by no means an easy book to read and certainly a challenging one to write but Jess did Lance and Scar justice.
Part one ended on a sombre note as Lance bid farewell to Scar at the Lowerick Estate, facing the consequence for protecting his woman and part two followed the events that happened after prison. He shut everyone out for seven years, thinking he didn’t deserve them and hoping they’d move on. When he found out he had a daughter, nothing was the same. He realised how much he had missed and he was desperate to right his wrong given a second chance. But it wouldn’t be easy.
There was so much love in Lance, if only he knew how to accept it. The way he was with Waverley made my heart melt. Despite being lost and broken, he tried so hard to be the man she needed and deserved. They bonded instantly and it was heartwarming to see how their relationship developed over time.
Scar was the star of the show for me. I had so much respect for her, for the incredible mom that she was and for the woman she had become. Tough yet not afraid to be vulnerable. The letters she wrote to Lance completely destroyed me. It documented the happy days but also the sad times. Her emotions were so raw it broke my heart reading them. Lance did everything to make up to her.
All this time, they never stopped loving each other. It was evident in the way they cared for one another. Old scars lingered and new wounds formed, yet they overcame every single one of them together. Their love was one of a kind and I knew they’d find their way back to one another.
Words couldn’t describe my love for the world Jess had built, especially the amazing friendship the ‘Grand’ family found in each other. Her writing had elevated to another level with this masterpiece and five stars just didn’t seem adequate.
