It’s been two months since Piper and her Gran relocated to Bitter End, Florida, as part of the witness protection program, and things are only slightly looking up. That is, if you don’t count another murder.
Piper has taken a bartending job at a dive bar that’s shadier than a palm tree at night. Dealing with questionable characters comes with the territory, but she’s used to that. After she threatens one of the patrons with a knife, she stumbles upon his dead body in the alley later that night. She is not used to that.
She is content to let the police deal with it, but then, on the corpse, she finds a note with her name on it—her witness protection name—which will now need further protection! Piper is then propelled into a high-stakes pursuit of uncovering her mysterious connection to a total stranger-turned-murder-victim.
Between launching her own investigation, meeting new shady characters along the way, and dealing with foot powder and garden gnomes at the retirement complex where she lives with Gran, Piper has her hands full.
Not to mention Ryker, the hottest PI around town and then some, who seems to have made the phrase “bad time to show up” a mantra he lives by.
One thing’s for Piper has to untangle the web of clues and deceit before her real identity gets caught in it!
Bar None is perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich, Jana DeLeon, Gemma Halliday, Liliana Hart, and JB Lynn.
Piper Harris and her Gran are settling in at Bitter End. After all the retirement community where they live isn't too. Piper likes Edie, their next door neighbor. She's a unpredictable character. Unfortunately Piper keeps finding bodies which is frowned on by Witness protection. The latest victim is behind the bar where she works. Now Piper is determined to find out who committed this murder. Piper finds herself working with the neighborhood PI. This is a recipe for disaster. Or is it. They have a connection. I enjoyed the latest mystery. Piper, Gran and Edie are always involved in some high jinx. They make me laugh. Piper is a great detective. She's able to follow the clues and get to the truth. Deany Ray has written characters that are filled with sassy humor and a mystery that keeps me guessing. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
Toxic foot powder, naughty gnomes, a dead body and a surprise kiss lead to a fun and interesting story. Piper Harris has a bad habit of stumbling over dead bodies, not a good thing to do when you are in witness protection. Piper has taken a job in a bar in the shady side of town. When she takes out the trash she stumbles over the body of a customer she had an altercation with earlier and is surprised to find a paper with her name on it on the body. She has to find out why . Piper, Gran and Elsie end up teaming with a shady P.I. named Leonardi to solve this mystery. Ther are run ins with " Sourpuss", a wild car chase and other hijinks. Can be read alone but better if you read the other books in this fun series. I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my freely offered and honest review.
Piper starts work at a bar in the seedy part of town. Only to find a dead body by the bar's dumpster. It is up to Piper and company to solve the murder. Fun fun fun.
This series is about a grandmother, her granddaughter, a busybody neighbor, and the senior community that they live in. The grandmother and granddaughter aren't normal people taking it easy. They are there because they are in the witness protection program, having been active members in a criminal motorcycle gang. With that history, they have some unique skills and attitudes. This book is the next in a series. Although you can read and enjoy this book on it's own, I think the reader will enjoy the book more by reading at least the first book in the series.
The series has a lot of dead bodies showing up. Although Piper and Gran work on the mysteries of the murders, the series is very funny. They are misfits, even though they are bright and talented. Think Stephanie Plum with a bit of an edge.
If you're looking for a lighthearted, comedic, cozy mystery series, you really should try these books.
I received an advance reader copy of the book. This is my honest review.
Piper continues to stay within the WITSEC lines, but seems she's skating on thin ice when she takes a job bartending in a skeevy dive bar. But at least it's the kind of place that nobody cares about, so she should be off the radar. Until...
Another funny book with hilarity sprinkled in unexpected places with unusual reasons. Remember the foot powder? It's back... The book was diverted from the Bitter End Independent Living complex by Piper's job, however plenty of time and energy was left for hijinks and hilarity involving "Sourpuss" mostly. I love the premise of Grandmother and Granddaughter ripped from their biker life and thrown into Florida's tongue-in-cheek answer to hell on earth in their minds.
A fabulous book that was enjoyable and full of surprises from page one. I can't wait until October for the next book! I laughed so much! I loved it.
When Gran was placed in the witness protection program, they moved her and Piper to a retirement community in Bitter End Florida. It’s a totally different life than what they were living in Oregon! They’ve been given new names and new backgrounds, and their old life should just be forgotten. Not that easy! Piper has taken a job as a bartender in a dive bar. That’s just asking for trouble, and it comes in the form of a dead body behind the bar! To try to stay off the police radar, Piper, Gran, and their neighbor Edie try to find the killer. Added to the investigation, the seniors in this retirement community are always up to some kind of mischief that will keep you in stitches! I love his series! There’s never a dull moment so I just can’t put them down!
This is a fun series. Piper and her grandmother are in a witness protection program. They're living in a retirement community in Florida. Completely different than what they are used to. In this story Piper is bartending at a seedy bar and while taking the trash out she finds a dead guy. He had earlier caused problems in the bar and she had thrown him out after using her knife to scare him. She sees a piece of paper hanging out of his pocket that has her name on it. She decides she needs to investigate as she has never seen him before that night. There's also stuff going on with Sourpuss a hateful lady living in the community. Read the whole series to enjoy this the most!
What can I possibly say... Book 3, read consecutively and let me just say that Edie is getting on my nerves!! I can totally get why Gran threatens to shoot her all the time, lol. But I guess she means well 🤷♀️ (I'm Southern, so that's basically Bless your Heart because I can't find anything nicer to say.) This story had me guessing who "done it," all the way to the very end and I never saw that one coming!! This is another book that flows well and is a quick easy read for as many pages as it has. I still recommend this series. I just wish Deany Ray push the time line between books a little farther apart. I mean, seriously 3 dead bodies in 3 months. But it is what it is.
This is my fourth book by DEANY RAY! And I love love, love her books. They are absolutely laugh out loud books.. when a book makes me laugh out loud you know it is a fabulous wonderful book. I absolutely love Piper graM and EDIE. I love the whole retirement group. This book is hilarious exciting easy to read and every page I’m laughing.? I highly recommend these books. I bought all of them and they are just wonderful. I love it when old people and young people have fun together because old people are a riot.. buy this whole series. You will not be sorry. I love you Deany Ray for riding such a hilarious series of books! Piper is just like me and I love all of them and you are a great author
After reading book three of the Piper Harris series, I read the short author's bio. Deany Ray lives in Cologne and was born and raised in Europe, also. The bio also said English is not her native tongue. So how does she sound so American and so similar to Jana Deleon? I do not believe a European wrote these books. I read too many books by authors of other nationalities, and they all have a distinctive style. That being said, I enjoyed the first three books and the escapades of three unique women who manage to get into sketchy situations without trying very hard. This author's style is so very similar to Jana Deleon, I could believe it is actually her. I'm just not convinced the author is not American.
I enjoyed the first two books, but this third installment really missed the mark for me. It repeatedly rehashed the same details from book one the missing leather and motorcycles, the Falcons, WITSEC and it felt more like a recap than a new story. Understand references and summary for new readers, but what about the readers who have been here from the start? It is whinny and getting old real quick. I would have liked to get to know the new characters coming into storyline, or develop the characters already around (foot powder anyone IYKYK). Because of that, the plot never really developed further than superficial, and the mystery ended up feeling predictable and flat.
What's Piper gotten herself into this time? Well, she got a paying job but proceeded to find a dead body almost right away, so of course, Gran and Edie wanted in on the investigation. Meanwhile, a seedy PI kinda befriended her and even had a job proposition eventually. I was actually a little blown away by the whodunit, but the showdown was another Gran-epic one, lol. Seniors for the win again! I can't wait to read the next book and see what Piper decides to do. That PI was actually her type of people, ha!
Despite not having read books 1 and 2 in the Piper Harris mystery series (which I’m going to rectify ASAP!) I was immediately sucked into the world of Piper and her kick-ass gran, who’re both in Witness Protection and hiding out in a retirement village in Florida. Piper, who’s working in a local dive bar, soon finds herself embroiled in a mystery when an odious character who she’d had a run-in with is found dead in the alley behind the bar, and he’s got PIper’s name on him, written on a slip of paper! Highly recommended, a fantastic and engaging read.
I am now three books into the series and am invested to see if Piper and Gran can continue to become more acclimated to their new lives, so I feel like I can’t stop now. However I felt like the book gave more or less then same background as the second book did to the point where I found myself skipping over the flashbacks. If this is the first book you read of the series, you will definitely still know what is going on.
I am still waiting to see Piper and Ryker get together!
I'm just about ready to DNF this series, which I rarely do. It's cute but absolutely predictable. If I hear about Edie's dolls, Rykers ass and tattoo, how Piper misses her old life, flip flops, Dorothy not dressing for FL weather, and their fude with Sourpuss I may chuck the book across the room. 3 dead bodies in 2 months and nobody from WITSEC came to give them a lecture or at least a conversation. I'm reluctantly moving to book 4... But kinda secretly hoping they're forced to move... Lol
Piper takes a job at a bar in the bad side of town. There is a man murdered there whom Piper had threatened shortly earlier to protect a female patron, and when she checked his pockets, her name was there with a high dollar amount on it. Now she needs to find out if the members of her former biking game have found them, or if it's something else entirely
This story has developed characters, a bit of humor, and a bit of intrigue.
Deany Ray has done it again, she has written a charming and delightful cozey mystery that will draw you in and won't let you go until you've reached its unexpected and climatic conclusion. This time it's personal and Piper won't stop looking until she has all the answers to why she's found a dead guy behind where she works and you're never going to believe what's coming. Acquire " Bar None " today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. Kat
I love the characters in this series of stories. Piper is at it again when she discovers the man she threatened dead in the ally behind the bar she works at. She discovers a sheet of paper with her name on it when she checks his body. Piper has no idea who this man is, so why is her name written on this paper? I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Fun, easy read. Not so certain I can contend with the "woe is me" mentality and internal monologues much longer. I'm hoping the characters start to settle into their new reality and stretch out some. I know they've only been in Florida for 3 months so I'm trying to give it a little grace, but it's time to find a way through. There are some laugh out loud moments though - that's keeping me coming back.
3✨ Unfortunately, this became a DNF. The premise of this series is so good and it has a lot of fun and interesting moments, but I wasn’t able to keep going. Gran is a bit too much of a hardass, and there are only so many times I can have Piper say that she knows Gran cares before I start wondering why Gran never shows it. I also really wish Piper had less I’m not like other girls energy. It doesn’t pop up often, but it happens enough that it makes it more challenging to like her.
Of the three first novels in this series, this was the read I enjoyed the most. It isn't that the first two weren't good, just that this one had a great deal of action, and the reader got to see the real personnalitiy of Piper the most. Piper and her Gran, along with neighbor Edie, get into multiple adventures. From seeking around exchanging gnomes with x rated version, to investigating murder, the action keeps coming up to the end of the book.
A prank goes wrong but with lots of laughs while a night of bartending goes wrong. Then someone finds a body and that spells trouble for everyone. And while someone is using names from the retirement center the puzzle is to figure out “who “ and “why”. But there is still a killer on the loose- but not for long !
This was quite entertaining. I stayed up late just to finish it, so I definitely enjoyed it. Another murder needed investigating. During that progress, a cheek got kissed, she got injured, a battle settled the question of who killed the guy, and a possible new career path is considered. It was a good read.
Book 3 in this series proves being in a retirement community is a lot less boring than you would think, especially if you are a thirty-something woman in Witness Protection with her grandmother. But be prepared to see "tooth gap" about 50 times while reading. I am not sure if I exaggerated the number or not.
I absolutely adore this series...The character's were something else & funny! I love Piper & her feisty attitude & her gun toting grandmother....Like Edie & Ryker hope Piper & him hook up! Keep this series going...Thanks for the enjoyable read....M.L.🙂
The book captures your interest right away. Hard to put the book down. I will tell all my book reading friends about Deans Ray books. I can’t wait for book #4. I hope Ryker and Piper hook up.
I love this series. There are varied, quirky, smart characters. This mystery has twists and turns and fun side trips. It is enjoyable from start to finish. I look forward to the next book.
Still funny as heck though. Glad the author decided to “somewhat” stop using the Lord’s name in vain. It’s really unnecessary and cheapens the writing.
Nice little mystery. I have lived as an adult in Florida for 49 years and there are a few things the author got right and a few things wrong. I am enjoying the mystery but I could do without Ryker.
