A story about three women connected by fate, each with their own story of survival and new love.
Two decades ago, three strangers—a flight attendant, a mom, and a baby—found their lives forever changed by a plane crash. Now they must reconcile their past with their future in this heartwarming and uplifting tale of love and forgiveness.
Amy Q. Barker is an author of women’s fiction. Her love stories are filled with heart, humor, healing, and happiness. Amy was raised in a small town in Western New York State and now lives on a lake in Indiana with her husband. When she’s not working or writing, she enjoys reading, kayaking, hiking, and spending time with her grandchildren.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via the author.
Lap Baby has got to be my favourite book so far by Amy Q. Barker. Amy has a beautiful way of writing and enveloping you within her characters and this book has to be her best yet. This story really pulled at my heart strings and made me question my beliefs. We follow four survivors ( Julie, Terry, Paige and Marie)who twenty years after a fatal plane crash are still struggling to function with their grief. We see many different ways each survivor has learned to cope with things in the aftermath such as alcoholism, avoidance and denial. Julie was a flight attendant who's struggled since the crash to come to terms with choices she made as the crash unfolded. Paige was just a baby passenger when the event happened (a lap baby). Marie lost her son in the crash and has never stopped thinking of him or missing him and Terry who made the choice to walk away from the crash and try to pretend it never occured. This was so tenderly written and I was stunned to realise at the end this is based on a true story. Thank you Amy for such a beautifully told and meaningful, reflective read.
This was a new-to-me author and I very much enjoyed the story and the author’s writing style. I look forward to reading other books by Amy Q Barker and highly recommend this one!!
♦The story follows Paige, Julie, Marie and Terry’s lives after they survived a horrific plane crash. They each have survivor’s guilt and the story allows us into each of their lives so that we can understand exactly how that must feel and the results of dealing with something like this.
♦Each women’s story is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
♦In the author’s notes, she reveals that this story is true and explains how she came upon it and thereby wrote the book. Very interested and I would have liked to have known this upfront, so I’m sharing it in case you decide to read it.....read the author’s notes first.
♦The four individuals in the story deal with many trauma issues, grief, self-doubt, love, forgiveness and healing.
♦There is so much in this well-crafted story to love and the character-building is so strong and powerful. You are engaged from the very beginning and feel like you know each character personally.
I love this author and this is one of her best books. It is about how a plane crash affects the lives of survivors in very different ways. I got invested in the characters early in the book and it held my interest throughout to see how their stories developed.
Ms. Barker wrote an emotional and beautiful story fast forwarding 20 years after a planet crash. Do you believe in destiny? Do you ever wonder why people’s paths cross…for a minute, a day, a week … a lifetime? This book will have you asking those questions and wondering “what if” when you just flew in a plane or when you are boarding a plane about to fly. At least it did for me. This book’s plot is intriguing and hard to put down as we read about 4 different stories, 4 different individuals. The author was always two steps ahead to keep the reader interested and on their toes not knowing what would happen next. The characters dealt with many issues thrououggt the book such as distrust, unworthiness of themselves, PTSD, self doubt and then healing. The book comes to unexpected conclusion at the end but still does not disappoint. @suzyapprivedbooktours
A plane crash reverberates into the future as we follow three women whose lives were changed forever that day. They each carry a starkly different perspective that follows them into the future as they grapple with the consequences of being a survivor despite all odds. Julie is a flight attendant who struggles with the choices she made as events unfolded. Marie is a mom missing her beautiful son who tragically didn't survive. And then there's Paige, who was just a baby, a lap baby, when the plane went down. I am a fan of Amy Q. Barker's work. Each of her books are very different. But they have things in common too. Strong character development, unique and multilayered storylines, and a quality that keeps the story rolling and tumbling in unexpected ways. I always learn something too, and find myself making discoveries right along with her characters. After reading the author's notes at the back of the book, I found out that this story is based on a true one, and that it came to her in an unexpected way. I will leave you to find out the rest. You will be glad you picked this one up.
A intriguing plot that kept me reading almost non-stop .
So WONDERFUL to read a story that has a unique and interesting plot . Amy gives the reader the right amount of believable conflict and romance to ake them want to read the book cover to cover ! Looking forward to the next reading adventure you provide Any Q. !
Emotional, heart wrenching, forgiveness, guilt.....this is the story of this book. I am gutted but yet find hope when I read each page.
There are 4 survivors of a plane crash many years ago. Over 100 died in the air disaster and somehow the 4 survivors' lives are forever changed. Julie, the stewardess, tries hard to fight for change, as her guilt haunts her on the loss many, but especially trying to cope with Maria's son, who was a "lap baby". Paige was the only "lap baby" that survived, but at what cost. Julie wants change in how the protocol of dealing with a possible air accident and when children, especially lap babies, are on flight. There is a 4th survivor as well, that really comes full circle...but in which way? Will there be forgiveness and healing after 20 years have passed?
This story was fantastic women's fiction that really felt real....and the epilogue just choked me up as I am trying not let my tears flow. This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend this book.
4.5 stars Lap Baby is an original, unique, engrossing and refreshing read. Lap Baby was inspired by a segment of a TV show making the story that more intriguing not to mention I actually learnt something. I have not read any of Amy’s work before and I am glad I picked this book up. Amy carefully entwines the stories of three women who find themselves connected and experiencing love, pain, loss and forgiveness and the harsher realities of life. The characters are wonderfully developed that felt real, relatable, likable and easy to connect with. They may be surviving but they aren’t living, they are much stronger than they think. It is an emotional read that will tear at the heartstrings. Tissues may or may not be needed. But a good strong drink will be. I would highly recommend this book.
“Once You Hear My Story, you’ll never fly on a plane again without thinking about me.” This is the first sentence of the book and it got me! You are thrown into the lives of the survivors of a plane crash. You see how everyone is navigating this shared situation and how different the characters are dealing with the aftermath.
Amy Q. Barker had me so invested in these characters. I could not help but fall in love, get angry, and feel all the emotions. This is one of those books you keep thinking about after. Can’t wait to read more by this author!
This is a new to me author and I was rapt from the beginning. Right from the prologue and describing the plane boarding process, I could feel it as I too have done it so many times before.
As we follow the four crash survivors and their different approaches to their life, I was reminded of coworkers that too survived a crash where many perished. I am amazed at the strength some people possess. It was an emotional read for me as I read their struggles and how each one handled things differently. There were a few unexpected moments that kept me wanting more. What a unique story and I appreciated the author’s description of her inspiration in the acknowledgements.
The Premise In the aftermath of an unspeakable tragedy, three women who survived it are still shattered in many ways 20 years later. The youngest, Paige, is now a young woman who stumbles into a relationship with her first love. Can she find a way to escape her past? Homemaker, wife, and mother Marie has never recovered from her loss and grief — is it too late to save her marriage? And finally there’s Julie, a divorced flight attendant who is still fighting to make a difference decades later — a losing mission, but her only way to channel her own grief and guilt over what took place that day. Can these woman each find a way to not only survive, but also thrive in their lives and forgive the past?
The Pros & Cons This was another amazing read by an author who blew me away with her last novel. Here again, she deals with crippling grief and a tragedy that has forever marked the lives of these women. Each story occurs in the same timeline but almost entirely separately, with very little crossover at the beginning, and then we dive into their individual stories before it culminates in their reunion at the end.
For each woman, living and loving is a challenge. From the divorced Julie who ruined her own relationship after the tragedy she survived, and isn’t sure she can open herself to love again; to the still-married Marie who ignores her husband and family’s needs to wallow in her own grief; to the young and naive Paige who isn’t sure what love is as yet — love at different stages of life is depicted with an honest, raw intensity that keeps you feverishly turning the pages to see how their stories will turn out.
As with all of this author’s books thus far, I came away with an overwhelming sensation of having learnt something. In this case, it’s that regardless of what took place in the past, it’s never too late to heal. It took these characters decades to reach to that point of truly overcoming the past and forging a new way forward, and the wait was worth the while and hugely satisfying.
As it is a five-star-read I struggle to find any hiccups here, but I do remember there was a moment very near the end where a sprinkling of a “steamy” moment for one of the characters seemed unnecessary — though I’m positive many readers would have loved it, LOL! I absolutely loved all the earlier steamy bits that sprung up though — the author writes these very well with such tastefulness and care; it’s just that for me at that stage of the book with just a few pages left to devour, it felt like a bit much. Also, honestly, there is so much here to love in this novel that even as a clean romance, everything would’ve still worked beautifully. Each woman’s story is a fantastic story in its own right, and it only gets better when everything ties together in the end!
Conclusion This was another well-crafted novel that explores a shocking, rare tragedy and it reverberations decades later, and yet there is so much levity and sweetness at the same time that it makes your heart soar. Again I must mention my favourite thing about this author is that there are no tropes here; no cookie-cutter story whatsoever. Each story of hers is entirely different, so you never know what to expect, and this was another great surprise that wowed me. I absolutely loved it, and look forward to the next one!

Lap Baby tells the story of three women who survived a plane crash twenty years prior. Each woman has coped with the crash in a different way as they try to move forward and overcome their grief. Paige was a baby, a lap baby, when the event occurred and was adopted after the accident. She is happy and just wants to forget that it ever happened. Marie has never gotten over the loss of her son who died in the accident and needed to blame someone for the crash. She has decided that it was Julie’s fault and wants revenge as the anger and hatred eats away at her. Julie was the flight attendant on the plane who had had to live with the choices she made during that day. She lives with the guilt and the consequences of her decisions. Each woman has learned to cope in a different way as they try to heal. They struggle with issues like alcoholism, PTSD, and self-doubt, that have a ripple effect through their lives.
This author was new to me, but I know that I will be looking for more of her writing. This book was based on a true story, which I did not know when I started to read it. It was compelling, heartfelt, heartbreaking, and hard to put down. The author did a beautiful job of sharing the stories of the survivors of this horrific plane crash and how it affected their lives even years later. The characters are beautifully written and relatable, so it is easy to get invested in their individual lives and story. This is an emotional read that will tug at your heartstrings and have you reaching for the box of Kleenex. I highly recommend this book!
This was an emotional story with an original and intriguing storyline which had me hooked from page one. The story is set twenty years after a plane crash and centres around three women who survived. Children under the age of two, known as ‘lap babies’ are instructed to be placed on the floor of the plane during an emergency. This is what flight attendant Julie Geiger told five sets of parents to do just before the plane crashed, and she is now living with the guilt. In order to try and heal and gain forgiveness Julie is trying to get the rules on lap babies changed. Meanwhile Marie Stanley who lost her son on that flight blames Julie. Marie knows she needs to move on and not let her hate fester, but she can’t seem to stop feeling vindictive towards the flight attendant. Then there is the lap baby who survived, Paige Montgomery, however, her parents died and she was then adopted. Paige just wants to forget it ever happened. All three women are dealing with the consequences of that fateful flight, whilst also trying to move on with their lives. Paige is happily at the start of a new relationship and wants to learn to forge her own path, whilst Marie needs to let go of her hate if she’s to save her marriage, and Julie is so full of blame and involved in her cause, that she can’t see love fitting into her life. This is a heartwarming and at times heartbreaking story, which took me on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it. I felt instantly engaged with the wonderfully detailed characters and along with the descriptive narrative I was fully immersed in the story.
Lap Baby by Amy Q. Barker is an emotional women’s fiction story, and the first book that I have read by her. The title grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it, and when I read the blurb I became intrigued by the promise of a touching story- so much so that I found myself putting aside the book I had been reading to leap into this emotional tale. I found Ms. Barkers writing to be captivating, warm, and inviting- while also tugging on my heartstrings and giving me all the feels. Her characters are really well-developed with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. The whole ‘lap baby’ aspect of the story added an extra element of interest, and angsty emotion- and proved to be quite thought-provoking as well. We meet Paige, Marie, Terry, and Marie who all survived a horrific plane crash. This tragic event has made a massive impact on each of them, and we follow as they navigate their lives and deal with the issues the crash has caused- such as survivor’s guilt, heartache, trauma, grief, and self-doubts. But this story isn’t doomy and gloomy- it has some real heart-warming and inspirational moments- making this a very memorable read for me. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Ms. Barkers work in the future. Happy Reading…
Lap Baby by Amy Barker is available now in eBook and Physical Book ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐ Book Review
Lap Baby is a heartwarming, inspirational woman’s fiction novel about redemption, forgiveness, and finding oneself after a tragedy. 20 years ago three women Julie, Marie, and Paige were the only survivors of a horrific plane crash. Julie was the flight attendant on duty that day and lives with self doubt and guilt daily. Her only focus the last twenty years has been to have the rules of a flight changed with no success. Will she ever be able to let the actions of that day go so she can live her life to the fullest?
Lap Baby is told by all three women who survived the plane crash. With the story being told from all three perspectives the reader understands how each person can be affected so differently from the same tragedy. The characters are well developed, and the story line believable. This emotional story had me on a roller coaster ride from the very beginning. My heart ached for all three women for many different reasons. I so badly wanted all of them to forgive Julie and understand that accidents are called accidents for a reason. This was my first time reading a novel written by Amy Barker and I am glad that I picked this one up. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a heartfelt summer afternoon read.
Lap Baby was an amazing story, one of my favorite reads of the year. I love that it was lightly based on a true story (I googled the Lap Baby laws mid book; and the blurb at the end explains the inspiration). I was hooked instantly, and it got better as the story progressed. The author got the idea for the book after watching a documentary about Lap Babies, those under age 2 that fly on their parents lap. The story surrounds a terrible accident, where there were Lap Babies on the flight, and it crashed. The protocol states the babies should be placed on the floor between their parent's feet. The flight attendant, and one of the main characters, Julie, felt terrible giving these instructions. The parents were not happy with the decision either. The flight had just 4 survivors, and this book shows their lives 20 years later. That one day shaped the survivors life, and each handled it differently.. Paige was my favorite story, but I loved Marie and Julie as well. I love the way Terry stayed distant through the years, but was brought back in, in a twist that was lovely. I did not love the epilogue, found it a big cheesy, but sweet. I look forward to reading more by the author, because if they are half as good as Lap Baby, I'll be happy.
How beautiful and serene is this cover !? When you look at it , it feels like you are sitting with each of the characters and you’re listening to their story you feel their heartache and anguish ….
What really hit me is that this story is loosely based on true events and that in fact there really is a policy where children under the age of 2 were in fact on parents laps and in case of emergency they had to be placed in the floor .., I know as a mom I’d want to cling to my baby and ensure that he / she feels safe in my arms I cannot even begin to imagine the anguish these woman went through …
So we follow the story of the 3 survivors , 20 years later . Julie , the flight attendant . Paige , the only baby to survive . Marie who survived but her baby didn’t and has blamed Julie for her loss .
We follow how each of the survivors had to deal with remorse , regret , resentment , grief and trauma . While there is alot of sadness there was also healing , redemption , forgiveness and moments where I wonder if I could walk away like these women did … this is one of these reads I want every woman to read 📚❣️
This tale of three women facing life after a tragedy is wonderful and horrible. Each having to find their way in the world after, each having to figure out how to live life after. What does that even mean?
Julie, the flight attendant, has to find purpose in her life after fighting a fight to change the rules that no one wants to change. She also has to manage to live after following protocol, but that doesn’t take away the guilt.
Paige, the toddler, has to figure out who she is while living under the shadow of the tragedy. The physical remnants of the accident will always remind her but will they also keep her from moving forward?
Marie, the mom, has to determine who she is after losing part of herself in the accident. Filling her life with kids’ activities, chores, errands, and stuff doesn’t fill the hole, but is she missing out on what is really important? Marie needs to focus on the life she has in front of her, her husband and three kids, not what is missing.
Wonderful storytelling that weaves the connections and tears in these women’s lives.
I have found a new to me author that I absolutely love!
This book was such an amazing women’s fiction read. I loved the multiple stories of three women that took place within the pages of this book which were all tied together by a twenty year old plane crash.
The book is told in the points of view of three out of four plane crash survivors.
Julie was one of the flight attendants and followed protocol which haunts her every day.
Marie was a new mom who lost so much.
Paige was a miracle. A baby saved. She is now a young adult trying to find her way.
Each woman lost something in that plane crash and have dealt with that loss in different ways. Twenty years later and it’s time to let real healing begin.
This book is stirring and blends so many emotions. I enjoyed that complexity and the way the author portrayed each character in the book.
The fourth survivor does play a part in the read and it’s great how this book all came together and gave me a satisfying ending
Emotional is an understatment for the sentiments of this book. I've not read anything by this author before but I'll look for more by her.
This is the story of Julie, Marie, Paige, and Terry. They were all in a plane crash over 20 years ago. They were the only survivors on the flight that crashed when an engine failed during a blizzard. Julie was the flight attendant on that flight, while Marie, Paige, and Terry were passengers. Julie was instructed by the pilot to go into emergency mode so she did as she was trained. She had the lap babies moved to the floor between the feet of their parents. Julie fought for years to have this policy changed after the loss of life that took place on this flight.
This is a story of redemption, forgivenesss, and moving on. Each person has dealt with this situation very differently. They each have their own demons that they must face. There were a few times that I thought the story lagged on too much but overall, was a very good story.
This book is a work of fiction, however it is based on truth for the children who fly under the age of two. It made me think. It also haunted me much like the characters who were haunted for 20 years. This book was so good! There is one explicit scene at the end of the book. I loved the prologue and how the story started. Julie Geiger is a flight attendant who was working during a horrific plane crash. She was one of 4 survivors; the story follows the lives of these survivors. Paige was a “lap baby” during the crash, and the only baby who survived. Marie’s baby did not survive, and she blames that loss on Julie. Julie and Marie (and to a lesser degree the other two survivors) find their lives on hold for twenty years, unable to move past the plane crash. I loved the growth in the characters and how they learned to move forward. There was a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming and was awesome too! This book is a fantastic read and worth every minute of your time.
This was really emotional and heartwarming story. It deals with loads of things from love and loss, finding happiness, moving past hate and the need for revenge, finding the path to forgiveness and learning how to overcome guilt over circumstances we can no longer change.
This book is told from the views of 3 different women. All of them went through the same tragic event, a plane crash which killed everyone on board apart from them and it has effected them right up to this present day. This is the story of their journeys as they overcome their demons and find ways to live a more peaceful life. The characters development through this book was great and reading through there struggles although at times heartbreaking also gave you hope that things can change and you can find peace no matter what you go through. This book is emotional so I definately recommend some tissues but its well worth reading the sad times to see our characters bloom.
This book is an emotional ride with gripping characters who are all affected by trauma. How would you cope if you were only one of four survivors of a major plane crash that killed 142 individuals? Would this one tragedy stay with you and change your whole life by being a constant reminder of that day, or would you be able to walk away and push that day aside to move on with your life? This is what Julie, Marie, Paige, and Terry must decide in "Lap Baby" by Amy Q. Barker. Here we get to see three of the four survivors' first-person journeys and how their lives have been changed. This was such a fascinating read that had me wanting to know more about these people, their lives, and honestly had me upset and heartbroken for them. This story and these characters were so well thought out and written that I honestly questioned if this was a biography at one point! If you want an engaging, emotional read, check this out.
I was very invested in the book from the start because it draws you in immediately. I also felt connected since I am personally familiar with the area in which Paige lives. I smiled with how accurate the description of Paige’s hometown and job and past times and how they resonated with me also growing up in a small town.
This book has some amazing lessons and really shows the ways different individuals deal with trauma and showed the separate perspectives and struggles after the plane crash. It is a nice reminder that what you believe is important may not hold the same value to someone else and that people process things uniquely. Grief and loss from different ages and points of view is both heart breaking and thought provoking. How life does (or doesn’t) move on after loss is a real thing that should be discussed more openly. There is no one-size-fits-all reaction to trauma or loss.
"Twenty years ago. A plane crash. Three women survivors inexorably connected by fate, destiny, and a cause. Did you know that lap babies (children under the age of two) are instructed to be placed on the floor of a plane during an emergency? Sounds crazy, but it’s true. Julie Geiger, a flight attendant, told five sets of parents to do just that. Now she must live with the consequences. Will changing the rules bring her healing and forgiveness? And where does love fit into her life now? Marie Stanley lost her baby boy on that flight. And she knows exactly who to blame. Julie. " How will the survivors cope, anger, resentment? How will the person blamed feel guilty, sad, depressed? Will have to read the story to find out the journey. First time reading this author. I give the book 4 stars. Plan to read more of this author's stories.
What and emotional book! The author wrote in such a way that I could feel the frustration that Julie, a flight attendant, who is dealing with an experience she can never forget. Julie told 5 families with very young children to put their babies on the floor of the plane during an emergency. What happened to those babies and the families when the plane crashed? How can Julie live with her knowledge of that experience and knowing nothing has changed in the 20 years since that crash? What if anything can Julie and the families do to change the emergency training or process so families don’t have to go through an event like this again.
An emotional story of sadness, hope for changes, strength, and so much more the characters work through after this tragedy they never expected to face during their lives.
A plane crashes in a snow storm, leaving 142 dead. Only four survived. It follows three of the characters through the book, one didn't really make his presence know after the fact. Julie was the flight attendant for that flight, Marie was a mother with her child on the plane, and Paige was the only surviving baby of four on the flight. Julie keeps in contact with the surviving four, after taking the matter of lap babies on a plane in her own hands. After 20 years of her trying to get the rules changed, it left Julie busied and broken. All of them are still working through the trauma but within this book you get to see their lives starting to heal. A very emotional ending, that proves even when you have gone through something as traumatic as a plane crash it takes time to heal all wounds, those that are physical and mental. But it is possible to heal.
This is my first book by this author which I enjoyed reading. One of the things I enjoy most about this author is their ability to pull me into the story and keep me engaged throughout. The characters are connectable and had me coming back for more. This is an emotional story about three women and one plane crash. How will they rebuild their lives and find themselves after a tragedy. I enjoyed watching their growth throughout. Their story is one of emotion and one you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed what they brought to the story and how they made it easy to read. This is a fast paced story that is hard to put down. You don’t want to miss what happens with these three women. I highly recommend this book.
