A one night stand with consequences is one of my favorite romance tropes, so My Unexpected Surprise was right up my alley and Piper Rayne delivered big time with this story. A man afraid to let anyone get too close after losing his mother at age 10 and a woman who has always wanted a fairytale love; complete opposites when it comes to the matters of heart, but one thing they do agree on they plan to be the best parents they can be to the child they created on their one night together.
When Fisher sees Allie again at the hospital she used to work at and notices she’s pregnant, he knows he’s responsible. When Allie confirms it, he’s a bit angry that she didn’t tell him until she reminds him that she called and left messages he never returned. He had a reason for that, one that in his mind was a good one, but now all he can think about is keeping Allie and the baby safe.
While there was no doubt fatherhood wasn’t something Fisher ever planned on, once he knew he really stepped up to the plate. He is there for Allie in all ways even moving her into his home when her apartment is flooded. It was interesting to see the often gruff sheriff become a big old marshmallow over his baby mama. Fisher did fight domestic bliss as he is convinced that’s not something he wants or will allow but with each day it becomes evident his feeling towards Allie are more than friendship he just has no idea how to deal with them.
The last thing Allie ever expected was to be single and pregnant, but that’s what the universe threw at her and she’s making the best of it. She feels bad that Fisher found out the way he did, but she also knows that’s on him. Yes, she could have shown up at his job or his home and made him listen but she knew Fisher doesn’t do commitment or family so what was the point. She’s a bit taken aback by his sudden over protectiveness and his demanding ways, but knowing the story about his mom’s death helps her to understand him even more
I enjoyed watching these two who really didn’t know one another well learn so much as they went through the last half of Allie’s pregnancy together. They both were cautious; Fisher because he didn’t want to have feelings and Allie because she wanted her happily ever after, but in being honest they both found a respect and admiration for each other that built as did their feelings. It might have been a bit of a romance in reverse, but they got there in their own time and for them it worked.
As always Piper Rayne brings in all the crazy of a large family, some senior hijinks, sexy times, and a bit of a heart stopping twist that added just the right amount of angst to set everything straight.
My Unexpected Surprise was a delight and joy to read; it wasn’t a typical romance but it was nonetheless a perfect one.
