We close our eyes to the truth…some stay closed forever… When an antiques dealer takes a short cut through a nature reserve in Horncastle, nobody will see Michael Levy alive again. The missing person report sparks a wave of action that lands on DI Freya Bloom’s desk at the worst possible time. Her team is being torn apart from above, her new boss is looking a way to fire her, and the man she adores has found love elsewhere. In short, the new life she has built in Lincolnshire is coming to an end. But as her team unravels a series of suspicious events, the missing persons case is escalated to murder - a body has been found…only it’s not Michael Levy’s. Who does the body belong to? Where is Michael Levy? And is this the break that Freya needs to regain control of her life? One Deadly Night is the tenth book in the addictive Wild Fens Murder Mystery series, perfect for fans of Joy Ellis, JM Dalgleish, Rachel McLean, and JD Kirk.
I love the regular characters. But will at least three of the team be moving on? The story is a real thriller, moving on at a reasonably good pace. There's some humour too. Not laugh-out-loud humour, but gentle episodes. The team moves on as a close-knit group. And there's a big surprise ending, way beyond my expectations.
There's plenty to satisfy crime readers here. Maybe the book is a tiny bit overlong, but this story can take it.
Freya, Ben and the tea and trying to find ways to work with their new DCI but he’s far from popular. A missing person case comes in and he makes the team look into it but it turns out to be a murder and his undoing. However Ben learns something he doesn’t want to know about Freya. They are both promoted when DCI Standing is found to be the murderer and rapist. Well worth reading.
This was another enjoyable British crime thriller full of twists, turns and surprises; thoroughly enjoyable. Of course, it was disturbing but very well done.
The writing style was fast-paced, while the characters suited the plot. I enjoyed the developing relationships and the humour.
There was a great sense of place and I liked how the clues led the plot and the anticipation of the outcome.
This is a blockbuster. Right from the start Standing has it in for Freya and her team, with much ill-feeling all round. But as the complex plot unfolds there are plenty of surprises in store, some for those who don't expect them. I won't give away the ending but it held me in suspense right to the very end. Looking forward to no. 11. Julian Tremayne, Pocklington, East Yorkshire
I have read the 10 stories in this series and I wish there were 10 more. The main characters are great. You really care what happens to them. The plots have twists and turns and keep you guessing. These stories are real page turners. It's hard to put them down. Looking forward to reading the next one.
Wow, this was great. The plot had more twists than a bowl of spaghetti. I was keen to get to the end to see if Standing got the shove somehow but I definitely wasn't expecting the outcome. Freya was magnificent in her leadership of the team. Ben's love life takes a turn and finally Freya gets promoted. I'm so looking forward to the next book!
Well thank goodness this case came along. A man who has been abusing his partner & her daughter is beaten to death in the forest. But through on of the busiest of spiderwebs, Freya and the crew will discover a way to finally have some security in their jobs and find out the truth. Not to give anything away but thank goodness 2 of my least fav characters will finally be gone.
Congratulations to the Author on yet another brilliantly written book which once I started reading it I could not put it down. I Absolutely enjoy this Author's style of writing and the characters especially Freya and Ben. I would definitely recommend to other avid readers like me.
I have enjoyed every book in this series. They seem to get better with each book. I like the team and how well they work together. The descriptions of the area is great. I look forward to reading many more books!
Another brilliant book from Jack Cartwright, I really didn't expect the twist at the end it was awesome, every book in the "Wild fens" series has been 100° and every one is a guaranteed brilliant read.
Jack Cartwright what can I say, you have excelled yourself! I did not see that coming, well done!
I have enjoyed this series and I can highly recommend the series to you !!! If there had been 20 stars available it still wouldn’t be enough ! Eagerly awaiting the next one !
I adore the way Jack Cartwright writes his books there are always twists and turns you’re not expecting and this was no different. Yet another brilliant read - on to the next one :)
Bloom is saddled with Standing as her boss. A rapist and paedophile gets his deserts but Bloom identifies the truth culprit from a small amount of information. Promotions loom.
I really enjoy all the books in this series. The characters continue to develop with each one. The plot lines are all good, with twists and turns. I look forward to the next one.
Much like the previous story. More of a soap opera less crime/police story. Found some of the character relationships strange. Felt the plot was a bit convoluted. Not sure if I'll continue with the series.
Probably one of the best no les I have read for a while! Great storyline, lots of red herrings, and a denouement that would have made Agatha Christie proud! Hercule, meet Freya! A great 5-star read!
I’ve had this book for a while and just couldn’t bring myself to read it. The reason for this is I just really don’t like Freya especially for Ben. I really hope you don’t plan on Ben getting romatically involved with her again. I was so glad to see him with Micaelah.
