This is book six of the Charassi’s Fae Queen series and the main characters are Bone Queen Ophelia Monroe, a human now with magic after she bonded with dragon Sunny (Sun in the Black Sky), and King Corrin, High King of the Fae and bonded to dragon River (Shadow on the River), plus Sunny and River’s young hatchling Starstriker, whose very existence is linked to a great evil and a prophecy of old. An ancient evil being, Kaliban, who was created by the six Ancestral Forces, ended up locked away in the Heart of the Realms after they realised how dangerous he was. Unfortunately, the birth of Starstriker has formed a bond between the young dragon and Kaliban, leaving Kaliban able to drain power and very life from Starstriker, in his attempts to escape his prison. The whole of Charassi and all other realms could be destroyed if Kaliban manages to escape and seeks his revenge on the Ancestral Forces themselves. Their previous journey to the Heart of the Realms left one of their trusted friends, Triel, under Kaliban’s influence and armed with an artifact he used back in Charassi to gather more people to Kaliban’s army, brainwashing them.
Corrin and Ophelia have to find a way to break the brainwashing spell put upon all these people, but have only had success one to one with pixies specialising in Mindwalking, able to bring people back to their normal selves. Those struck by Kaliban’s influence are suddenly able to use magic and a sudden accidental discovery means Ophelia’s human family members may be key to battling this magic! Young Starstriker is weakening as they ponder what to do, leaving his parents Sunny and River devastated. Ophelia and Corrin seek answers and solutions to the Kaliban problem, but he was created by ancient powers and whilst they have had one period of assistance from the Ancestral Forces, it seems they are unwilling to assist and interfere with mortal’s issues. Ophelia’s young sister Cricket (Amelia) steals the show for large parts after she runs away from a bully at school situation and crosses the portal between their Earth bound home and the palace in Dominion, Charassi, looking for her sister and to get away from the upset. Ophelia is shocked to see her there, but sends someone to pass a message to their father Jason, whilst Cricket gets a bit of a talking to! Cricket’s love of young Starstriker can’t be denied and ends up being a key part of the story. Breaking the bond between Kaliban and Starstriker may be too late as he weakens the very fabric between his prison and their realm. Their realm is becoming unstable and other realms will also be affected if Kaliban continues in his journey for revenge.
Lots of build up to the final epic battle, with new allies found and family brought into a danger zone, all in an effort to survive and protect those they love. Only at the end do you realise how young Ophelia herself is, as well as what she has had to contend with in the last few years since she met Sunny and Corrin. The finale has Ophelia and Corrin take part in many situations, from trying to find a high fae brave enough to even face the baby dragon in an effort to find a rider to bond with her, to figuring out how to stop more people following Kaliban and Triel, to persuading the dragons to join them and help mere mortals, and trying to stop any possessed fae being killed as they try to stop them. They know how easily they have been brainwashed and that they aren’t really their enemies, and are innocent in reality. Minor skirmishes go on all the time, as they try to work out what to do and try out each solution they can figure out along the way. Some romance, a surprising bond between young Starstriker and another, plus difficult and heartbreaking decisions to be made. If you love them enough, you must let them go, a very pertinent message from a widower to King Corrin, as he has to allow Ophelia to follow her own path. Sad to see it end, but lots of laughs and action along the way and a great storyline to follow.
