The Origin's Daughter

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Raven is tormented by regret as she finds herself in the principal’s office… again. This time, she was provoked into a physical altercation with another classmate— a familiar cycle she's been stuck in since elementary school. With a troubled past of being bullied, repeated suspensions, and switching schools, Raven has always struggled to maintain her temper. Particularly when dealing with the never ending abuse she seems to suffer from her peers.

Only her adoptive parents provide a safe haven in a world where she is an outcast with few friends and even fewer allies. Everything changes when a mysterious stranger who smells of the ocean enters her anger management class. This stranger upends Raven's life, uncovering a secret world of daemons, shifters, and Obeah practitioners. She is pulled into the center of it all and learns she may hold the key to stopping an impending evil.

The masters of the daemon world have finally found her, and she can no longer run from her destiny. Raven must navigate blurred lines of duty, allegiance, and love to protect those she cares about; unlikely alliances must be made to stop the pervasive darkness. This is a gripping and thrilling journey where Raven discovers the true meaning of power, sacrifice, and love.

___ "Let us walk through worlds," he whispers. "I will teach you to move planets, how to reorder the stars, to become nighttime itself, how to speak the language of the dead. I will lay your adversaries at your feet."

DNF AT 49%.

I TRIED. The promise was there. Oh but it fell so short that every time I opened up my kindle to read, I just wanted to chuck it across the room.

This was a Booktok trap/rec and I’ve REALLY gotta be careful when it’s the books author hyping up the book.

- The writing was lackluster, the pacing was too fast in the beginning then it dragggggged
- the characters did not have ANY TIME for development, personality or chemistry. Like they were thrust into the plot without any world building.
- don’t get me started on the Jamaican character… DID NOT NEED TO ACTUALLY WRITE IT IN A JAMAICAN ACCENT. IT WAS SO CRINGY, FORCED AND CAME ACROSS KINDA RACIST.
- ugh 7 deadly sins, daemons, witches, etc… it was not building up to be a good plot line

Every character was forced, bland and this seriously read like a rough draft. The potential was there but it fell short.

THIS BOOK!! Wow I absolutely loved it! The story, the characters, the writing. Alexandra has such a way with words. I loved Raven, our FMC. She’s angry, she’s angsty and she is such a firecracker. And I only love her more by the end of the book. Can you say BADASS?! This fantasy romance was hard to put down, I absolutely flew through it. It made me laugh, if made me cry. It made me feel all of the feelings. Alex’s writing really grips you and has you caring for the characters like they’re family. There are twists and turns and the ending will leave you speechless. 10000% recommend. It was incredible!

The original Daemon’s daughter wow that was something else! So introduction into magic, and finding out why she couldn’t fit in the world. A trouble maker but like with the sweetest adoptive parents, the tables are flipped when found by Conrad and introduced to magical world and finds out about her origin things of course get all tangled up. Mix in betrayal with some other twists, and the ending chapters had me in tears- oh that hurt, a great mythical read. 0 smut so if looking for some of that action there is none- still amazing.

MINOR SPOILERS BELOW

First of all, the finale. HOLY GODS! I was turning the pages like crazy, that’s how invested I was. I am so excited to finally see Raven become a badass boss 😈

Now for the characters. I honestly had a bit of a problem connecting with Raven at the beginning, but she has grown on me throughout the story. I know I should probably hate Rycon, however I can’t bring myself to do it 🤣 Amon is without a doubt the most interesting character and I hope we get to see more of him in the sequel 🙈 Overall I loved how everyone was different and had their own characteristics.

I should mention the only bigger problem I had with the book and that was Conrad’s “accent”. I love the guy, but I had to read every single thing he said at least twice to understand what he was saying and it was a bit distracting. It’s probably because english is not my native language 😣

I anticipeted more romance, so hopefully the second book will compensate the lack of it, haha 🫶 I ship Raven and Amon like crazy so they better be cannon 😆

Well this was refreshingly enjoyable and good
4.75 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Let me just say that this book

1- was written by an indie author and for that, I appreciate all the work it took. My review would have been harsher had it been by a trad. pub. author.
2- it's a very good introduction to Low-Fantasy for those who would like to get into this genre
3- I can see where the author got her inspiration from, but I can also see where the author put her own touch and brought her own plotlines.

This is a fast-paced read for a fantasy. And because it is a low-fantasy, there is no need for world-building just an understanding of the magic (or magick) system. Maybe book 2 will be a high fantasy one. So, there aren't many descriptive paragraphs that readers sometimes find boring (like me, I don't know about others)

On this note, I wished the writer dwelled more on how Raven trained to control her powers. There is this very short paragraph like "and I trained to do that..." and that's it.

So you have your typical princess of magic of some sort, hidden amongst the humans, not knowing of her own power and origin. When suddenly all hell breaks lose and she is thrust into this world of chaos where she has to learn to use her powers or all will end, and all that jazz

However, what made this story different was the facts that

1- Raven, the main character, has a flaw. She is quick-tempered and an act-before-you-think kinda girl. I liked that, especially after knowing that the writer has ADHD (like me). Her behavior is typical of a person who has that syndrome. I also loved that for a 17-year-old, she was acting like a 17-year-old and not 30.

2- She wasn't presented as this "exquisitely beautiful creature " who every male falls for (insert role eye)

as a matter of fact, there is not much of her physical description except for her Black hair.

3- The POC representation was very nicely done. Conrad is Jamaican and I particularly loved how the author kept his dialogues in the Jamaican accent.

4- The first-person POV worked very well here. I do not like 1st PPOVs in fantasy in general. I would have rated low if this was a romance fantasy. However, since this book is NOT a romance fantasy, Raven's POV effectively showed her story and struggles. But, if book2 does have the "enemies to lovers" the duet promoted then I'm expecting at least a dual POV

5- I loved how the story progressed from light to dark to VERY DARK towards the end, so maybe some TW??

6- Though this book does not have an intense description, it did not need it. The writing style showed beautifully the connections between the characters especially Raven and her adopted family.

7- There were some twists along the way. Some were obvious others a complete surprise. And did Amon have Rowan-vibe? (silver hair, green eyes??)

Here was my only problem

Meredith

she was acting pretty suspicious. She was the one who gave Raven Triquetra that dampened Raven's powers. She hid a lot of information from Raven. She was acting weird in Clair's house. all these signs led me to believe she was conspiring with the evil side, which turned out NOT. So why did she give her the Triquetra that was used against Raven???
This didn't make sense to me

other than that, I loved the story. It is definitely a story-driven book. and I will continue to read book 2

This book shocked me with how I was automatically gripped to it.

How this book isn’t all over book insta or TikTok I don’t know, I loved every last bit of this.

Big up the author, I’m half Jamaican and she made one of good semi main characters Jamaican and even had our language in the book was brilliant (Gwarn Conrad).

The flow is easy and at a good pace, no hard complicated names to try and pronounce, short chapters. I am gutted that I don’t all the books cause I need to keep reading.

DNF at 35%. I really hate not finishing a book I started but this just wasn’t my cup of tea… Everything was just happening so freaking fast but at the same time nothing happened, if that even makes sense? Raven just accepts everything thrown her way, and Conrad? I get he has an accent but it was hard understanding what he was saying, I skipped most of his dialogue.
Yeah, do not recommend

This was a great start to this fantasy series! I actually think this a perfect book for those wanting to start reading fantasy and don’t know where to begin! This is a NA fantasy with some darker moments and lots of magical elements blended into the story! I love the Canadian setting and how it made me feel nostalgic of my years lived in Toronto. ❤️

We follow the story of Raven, a young girl who’s always felt like an outcast. Suddenly her life is turned upside down as she is thrust in this supernatural world full of daemons, shifters and elemental magic! Fans of the found family trope will love it in this story. The characters are definitely one of my favorite parts of this book (Conrads accent was a bit tiring but still love him). There isn’t much romance yet, but I’m hoping this will pick up in book 2 as I see some potential love interests brewing 👀 Rycon is my newest book boyfriend addition! I love his nickname “kitten” for Raven 😭❤️

The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger so I’m excited to get my hands on the next book!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy for review!

"I will teach you to move planets, how to reorder the stars, to become nighttime itself, how to speak the language of the dead I will lay your adversaries at your feet."

This was our first buddy read pick for @NoShelfControl.engagement Book Club & Buddy Reads!

I enjoyed it!I had a bit of a difficult time getting into it, and a couple of characters were hard to follow because of the accent added into the writing and conversations. But, even with me finding myself slowly going away from YA Romance, I really liked the story, and the magic involved was very unique.

"I will teach you to move planets, how to reorder the stars,"

Ok, first and foremost, I don't read fantasy, hardly ever.. this book had me HOOKED!

This was the easiest book to get pulled into that fantasy world because you aren't stuck world building first thing. You aren't left confused! This starts out in the real world and gradually introduces you to the supernatural elements.

The story follows Raven, a troubled teenager who slowly discovers that everyone she loves has been keeping secrets from her.

It was action packed, and had me wanting more from the very first chapter. Also, Rycon might be my favorite so far, and I'll happily be his kitten any day 🤭

I will definitely be diving into boom two ASAP! This was incredible.

Spoiler-free review. New favorite author alert! The Origin’s Daughter was so good, I could not stop reading it. I took it on vacation to Las Vegas and I found myself wanting to spend less time sight-seeing and more time reading. The characters feel immediately familiar but not in the sense that you’ve read dozens like them, but in the sense that they are all deeply relatable and you connect with them right away. Similarly, the story gives you all the familiar ‘vibes’ and emotion of your favorites (like ACOTAR, or Hunger Games, or Harry Potter) without feeling in any way derivative- it’s all fresh and new, I’ve never read a story like this. The story has bits of fantastic realism, straight up fantasy, mystery, romance, adventure, a bit of a dark/horror element, and plenty of emotion. I cried happy tears, sad tears, and tears of pride. I laughed out loud. I was so anxious/nervous in parts that my hands were shaking. You think you’ve figured everything out but that’s just what she wants you to think! This author has mastered what I call the last-line-hook. Not every scene is a cliffhanger but she writes in a way that keeps you invested and eager to know what happens next. The FMC is one of my favorites, ever. And I love all of the ‘supporting’ characters so much I genuinely could not pick a favorite. 10/10 will re-read this multiple times, suggest it to all my friends, and sing it’s praises to anyone who will listen. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series. NOTE: for parents or those concerned about content, there is some mild language sprinkled here and there but nothing crazy and there is a love story within the greater plot so there will be sexual innuendos and situations/language but I would be comfortable recommending this to a teen reader. Younger would just depend on how open you are with your kids about that- my mom would’ve let me read this at any age and just been there to answer any questions.

Rating 4.5 stars – Spice 0/5 for now

THE ORIGIN’S DAUGHTER is very an “introduction” book, but oh my it does so beautifully! Once I started reading, I had a hard time putting it down. It’s definitely a book that will appeal to fans of urban fantasy with found family, elemental magic, shifters, demons and the Seven Deadly Sins. The story also hints at a potential enemies to lovers relationship for the future books with a very slow burn that’s going to leave readers sizzling (me included!)

There were so many things I loved, but the characters have to be my favorite part! Raven, the protagonist, has elements that are both familiar and very rare among female protagonists of the fantasy genre. She discovers she has an incredible amount of power, but this doesn’t magically make her capable of using it. Raven struggles, both with her powers and with this new situation that forces her to open up to people, to trust, which is something an outcast like her doesn’t know how to do easily! I loved that she was a little on the grumpier side, and that—even when she failed—she always kept fighting.

The secondary characters were just as lovable and interesting, especially Rycon, my beloved mercenary shifter (he has dark hair, earrings and shifts into a panther, people, I’m a goner!) and the Prince of Pride, Amon, whom I feel will play a much larger role in the sequel (my enemies to lovers senses are tingling).

This is a book that spares no punches. There are twists around every corner, betrayals, heartbreak… The fantasy element is interspersed with a bit of a mystery about Raven’s magic and her identity, which feeds perfectly within the world building. There’s a lot of information already given in this first installment, but the author did a great job at spreading it out, weaving it within relevant conversations and making it nice and simple for the readers to grasp.

In short, obsessed! I cannot wait to dive into the sequel (which is already available) and see where this story is headed. Super recommended!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

If you're looking to get back into reading with a gripping fantasy novel, then I highly recommend checking out "The Origin’s Daughter". As a fan of fantasy books and historical fiction, I was not disappointed by this book. From the first page to the last, I was captivated by the story and its characters.

One of the standout features of this book is its character development. The characters are richly detailed and feel like real people with their own distinct personalities, flaws, and motivations. This alone was enough to keep me from putting the book down, as I was invested in their journey and growth throughout the story.

But it's not just the characters that make this book a page-turner. The plot, suspense, and development of the storyline are all top-notch. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to see what would happen next. And despite being a relatively quick read, I never felt like the story was rushed or incomplete.

In fact, I was so engrossed in the story that I finished the entire book in just two days. If you're looking for a fantasy novel that's similar to the greats like Tolkien, Narnia, and Harry Potter, then look no further. This book has everything you could want from a fantasy story and more. Highly recommended!

4.75 ⭐️ rounded up!

Firstly, THANK YOU SO MUCH to Alexandra for kindly sending me this book as a gift.

I knew I was going to enjoy this story from the blurb, however I did not expect to laugh AND CRY, and become so invested with every single character and fall in love with them so quickly.

• Witches/shifters/demons/mages
• Interesting magic system
• Elemental magic, auras
• Morally grey characters you can’t help but love
• Courts names after the seven deadly sins

I absolutely loved Raven who is our FMC and who the story is told from. I feel like so many things in the origins daughter were setting up for book two, the dominion of sin, without straying from the actual story line in this book.

Absolutely loved Prince Amon who didn’t actually have that much air time in this book but someone please tell me why I am already obsessed?

Rycon is one of those typical characters that is a walking red flag you should stay away from, but naturally I bloody loved him in this book EVEN WHEN I SHOULDN’T.

Conrad and Meredith also very sweet and I’m just really excited to see where the story goes. (hopefully it’s not as traumatic as the ending to this was…)

I have absolutely no idea what type of crack Alexandra put in her debut novel but whatever it is, I am fully hooked.

I started this book and finished it within a few hours… and let me tell you, I plan to devour book 2 tomorrow.

The origins daughter is a Paranormal, Urban Fantasy story with a splash of found family, a dash of romance and a hell of a lot of action. It is well plotted, well written and super engaging to read.

This story started out fun and interesting, and I was feeling a 4/5 star read from about the 100 page mark. But then it just got better and better and i honestly couldn’t give this less than 5 stars if I tried!

I was feeling very shout-y by the end of the book (in the best possible way!) but also super emotional- there’s a hell of a emotional rollercoaster for the last 20% of this book and when I tell you I was messaging the author saying “HOW COULD YOU DO THAT” 👀

This book is an easy read, not filled with overly complex world building that you tend to find in high fantasy books, which allowed the story to really build based on the emotions of the FMC and what is happening in the world around her. It is extremely fast paced, with not a-lot of room for breathing time meaning you’re constantly engaged with one plot like or another.

Amon is the Shadow Daddy and I will hear no different.

That feeling when you’re suddenly done with the book and you want MOAR.

The Origin’s Daughter is the type of book you sit down to read and can’t stop. I inhaled it in just a few sessions, and would have definitely lost myself in its pages if I didn’t have to do things like adulthing *shudders* It was such a fun read, with familiar fantasy tropes and darker elements that made it all the more captivating.

Mystery and secrets are some of my favorite elements in a story, and the author did a spectacular job of setting up the mystery of Raven’s past and her magic. I especially loved how her story is entwined with the Seven Deadly Sins!

One of my favorite things about this book, however, is the found family aspect. I loved Raven’s relationship with her adoptive parents and the one with her new group of friends, especially Conrad, who I loved instantly!

As fas as the romance goes, there isn’t much of it in this installment, but I do have a feeling there’s going to be a romantic arc going forward. I’m especially interested in Amon’s (the Prince of Pride) role in the future, because there could be some very fertile ground for an enemies to lovers romance!

Super excited for the next book, which is already out!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

This book started on the slower side but wow did the last 100 pages make up for it 😳 magic, demons, shifters, a veil to the other side. Need I say more?! Raven has struggled all her life to fit in, even her own birth parents left her to be adopted by Jeremy and Clair. Raven soon finds out why she never fit in with the humans she was surrounded by. This story line was so unique and I loved the different kinds of magic throughout this book. I gave this a 4⭐️ due to the lack of romance and Conrad’s Jamaican accent was hard to read at times. The end of the book was SO good and left me really excited to find out where this story will go in book 2! I’m excited for Amon and Raven to become more 💕
Raven is going to be SO badass in the next book, all the suffering and rage that finally accessed her full power 🙊

So at first I couldn’t get into it but I stuck to it and I am SO glad I did! I loved it sooo much!

Im going to be in the minority when I say that I loved Conrad’s dialect, I wouldn’t have pictured his accent if it was written normally whereas this really helped. I thought it was a great touch and made it so much more fun trying to pronounce it how he would’ve. Was great reading something in a different dialect this was new for me.

Morally grey is my faveee. The obvious future love interest, i need more of him. The few scenes he was in made me want to read more of him! I cannot wait for the next book to find out more about him👀 I need his side of the story is he actually a villain or misunderstood? I NEED to know! I will love him either way👀

I know I should probably hate Rycon but I currently don’t I find him oddly charming🤣 (maybe I’m being delulu) yes he puts them in situations that only benefit him but it sort of gives me Enzo from the vampire diaries vibes. You sort of know what you’re getting with him and he didn’t owe Raven any loyalty 🤷🏻‍♀️

Raven gave me Oli from J Bree’s Broken bonds series. Especially when her powers unleashed. Love a unhinged FMC😅

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

I actually loved this so much. Has been on my list to read for far too long

The FMC is angsty and an absolute firecracker, I can't wait to read her develop more in the second book. While I feel like we get some background and then thrown into the plot. Her character grew on me as the book progressed.

I feel like I should hate Rycon, but I just can't. His whole demeanor has me in a chokehold, can't wait to read more about him in the next book.

Amon I found intriguing and I hope there's more character development for him in the second book. What he did at the end?! Uhm, ok!

I love the aspect of found family mainly with Conrad and Meredith, although I really struggled reading Conrad's dialogue. I know he has an accent, but it made some parts really hard to read that I wanted to put the book down. Glad I pushed through because the story was great.

So many twists and turns throughout that had me absolutely gripped. There wasn't a huge amount of romance, although I'm holding out for the second book 🙌🏼

HOLY FIVE STAR CANNOLI.

First, let me say that this author is a truly beautiful soul. She loves her readers with her whole heart. She loves her books. She loves writing them for herself and for us. She’s just an amazing human who I’m blessed to have gotten to know and can only hope to continue to do so.

If that alone isn’t enough of a reason to read her books, this will be. This book was so dang good. You know those books that you can’t put down? That when you have to adult, you are thinking about? That wrecks your soul but soars to be a favorite book of the year and one of your heart books? Yeah, this is one of those. Her writing is stunning. I was lost in the pages. I was lost in the unique magic system. I was lost in the characters.

The ending. Jeez. Let’s just say, have book two on hand because if not, you’re going to be kicking yourself. Speaking of, if you need me I’ll be reading it.

Raven has trouble controlling her rage and it exploding has caused her to get suspended from school again. She lives with her adoptive parents, Jeremy and Clair and they both have tried to work with her to see what is causing these issues. Then strange things start happening and Raven is visited by magical beings. As these people attempt to teach Raven what she needs to know to protect herself as well as work with her power, other forces are attempting to harm her. Can these new friends help keep Raven safe or is she doomed to be harmed and her power drained?

I liked how once Raven found out what she was that the drama just gradually built until the final battle (well, the final battle for this book, I am sure that there are more to come). She really hasn't had a chance to discover who she is now that she knows what she is; she's been running the whole time. I can't wait to read the next installment.

I could not put this book down. This is the first book in an on going series. This was the perfect first book, giving us an amazing look into what more is to come. I fell in love with Alexandra’s writing from the very first sentence. You are following a girl named Raven trying to navigate life through high school and not knowing why everyone distances themselves from her. You soon find out she is the daughter of The Origin. I absolutely cannot wait to immerse myself into this world more with book two. I absolutely loved the magic system and the different “beings” such as daemons and shifters. If you are looking for a fast paced fantasy to get into, this is the one for you!!

I flew through this book, this story line is unlike anything I have on my shelves and I loved it.
A powerful half demon FMC sign me up!! I really got along with the writing style as well it really sucked me in.
The world building was so smooth and built up the images in my head.
There were some parts where I was needing a bit more information especially on the witches and their covens.

The only thing I wish was that the formatting was different, the gaps were too big between paragraphs and unnecessary. It broke up my reading a bit.

This was such a solid “first book in a series” and I loved every minute of it. It’s an urban fantasy with a fantastic cast of characters…and I think the characters were my favorite part of this story! The really embodied the “found family” trope and when done well like in this book, that trope is just so precious. I LOVED our FMC Raven. She’s fierce, angsty, and really comes into her own by the end of the book. The secondary characters are just as enjoyable to read as well! Especially Amon…who I’m hoping is an enemy that becomes a lover 👀

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

You will laugh, cry, and scream at this read. I could not put the book down, and loathed when I had to.

You follow Raven as she finds herself in a world she never knew existed right beneath her nose. This book leaves you on the edge of your seat with each twist and turn of the words on the page.

You have: Hidden power, Seven Deadly Sins, Elemental magic, and morally grey men who know how to steal your heart.

What a masterpiece with everything I look for in a read. A true escape.

This book is wonderfully written and the story is fantastic! I fell in love with the characters, so much so I actually cried. Always a good sign in a book when a writer can actually are you feel emotional over the characters and story. I highly recommend! Almost finished book 2! So so good, even better than the first!
