Father David and son Daniel Hays write in turns about their voyage in a small 25 foot Vertue class yacht which they jointly built for a large part themselves, ensuring the best options for harsh conditions going round Cape Horn. The account of their adventurous journey shows the writing skills of both father and son. It is not the usual quite dry account as found in a logbook, but provides a great narrative of their experiences in a very personal way, not sparing themselves for frustrations and different views, which at times is quite hilarious, but also sometimes also sad. The book is at the same time an account of a very well-prepared voyage, from construction of the yacht to finally making the journey based on extensive sailing and navigational experience of both father and son. I can only recommend this book to all (would be) sailors that are currently considering sailing a much larger yacht and think twice. The Vertue class ships are truly a class of their own for safety and can be handled by a small crew, often single handed.
