Sappy Romance Omitting the Horror

I read 50% of this story, hoping it would pick up the pace and become more than a sappy romance novel. The setting, an old Victorian mortuary, wasn't utilized by the author at all, so I found the story very disappointing and hard to read through. It was a DNF for me.
I could try to be objective and review this story as a romance novel, but even as romance, it was cloyingly sappy and amateurish with very juvenile writing. The story itself was shallow and barely transitioned from one thought or scene to another. The characters couldn't get out of their own heads to enact the story.
Except for some of its content, I would recommend this novel to YA readers. If you're looking for an excellent funeral home story with just a small dash of romance, try TETHERED by Amy McKinnon.

I read 50% of this story, hoping it would pick up the pace and become more than a sappy romance novel. The setting, an old Victorian mortuary, wasn't utilized by the author at all, so I found the story very disappointing and hard to read through. It was a DNF for me.
I could try to be objective and review this story as a romance novel, but even as romance, it was cloyingly sappy and amateurish with very juvenile writing. The story itself was shallow and barely transitioned from one thought or scene to another. The characters couldn't get out of their own heads to enact the story.
Except for some of its content, I would recommend this novel to YA readers. If you're looking for an excellent funeral home story with just a small dash of romance, try TETHERED by Amy McKinnon.

Guidroz can do no wrong in my eyes. This was a great balance of romance and horror which is a mix that we don’t see enough of!

boring disappointment
I feel cheated by the marketing off this book. It was advertised as a horror erotica/ horror romance but there was nothing thrilling about it. The major selling point of this book was in fact just a brief twist near the end and most of it as actually just your run of the mill small town romance. There was no tension, no angst, no psychological /body horror. Don’t waste your money thinking this will be anything like this author has wrote before. Oh and to top it off there was several grammar mistakes throughout which was so annoying.

I’m never going to be the type of girl that reads clean cut romance. It’s just not me. I like a bit of danger, a bit of spice, a bit of risqué with my flirting. I also think that I've discovered a new kink-Morgue spice. I’m now desperately trying to find other stories that are set in morgues, understandably, there aren’t many!
Dani has escaped the clutches of her abusive mom and boyfriend. Although her mom isn’t directly involved in the abuse, she doesn’t do anything to help her either. That is almost worse than the abuse, almost. Our parents are supposed to be our biggest supporters and protectors and to see the level of victim blaming from Dani’s mom, made me literally mad. I very nearly threw my kindle across the room.
She’s left her brother with her mom while she gets set up in Ripville, a small town that has a gothic feel. Everyone knows everything about everyone, but there’s a real sense of community. On the very first day she meets, Jasper, a real silver fox with manners to match. He’s daper, sophisticated and Dani can feel her loins quivering. There's instant attraction and Dani can’t help but be attracted to this mystery man.
When it turns out he’s her new boss at the Mortuary she vows to keep it professional, but can she?

I loved this book!!! It had the right amount of spice (for me… I’m not a ‘spicy/smutty’ reader but this was perfect), eerie-ness, ghosts, paranormal, not to mention somewhat inspirational and meaningful…. And I love a book with meaning, especially if it’s my preferred genre…. it was absolutely amazing. And I love how we get to read from both Dani’s and Jasper’s point of view. I started and finished it within 2 and a half hours. I couldn’t put it down. 10/10 definitely recommend.

A kinky mixture of Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison and a cutesy love story.
I love C.M. Guidroz's' writing style and dark sense of humor/dark mind. With my favorite novel being It's Me, Charlie... I was waiting eagerly for Love & Formaldehyde to release. I was not disappointed. The bonding between the character and reader and the overall shock factor I experienced with the twist in the plot was so worth the wait! However, I thought the paranormal element was maybe not as well-thought-out as the rest of the plot. It just got a bit confusing and jumbled towards the end. All in all, this one is a must-read.

WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST READ???
I could not put this book down. Where has this author been all my life?? This book talks about some tough subjects, but also teaches us how to overcome them.
Jasper.. Why oh why!?😭😭 he was so deliciously mysterious.. I cannot fucking wrap my mind around this!!

In my recent years I was aspiring to be a mortician , I learned quickly why more women are hired in the profession now than men. And as someone with a dark aesthetic this book blew my mind. Each detail and i was intrigued. And i loved that this book came with a twist I was not prepared for. it really kept me on my toes. I definitely will recommend this book to fellow dark ravens.

Love and Formaldehyde absolutely scandalized me. Every so often I crave a book that delivers the spice, that can bring the heat, and boy, oh boy, did this fucked up little novella deliver just that. Honestly, this book is just pure vibes, the cozy small town feeling is right there mixed in with all the dread and disgust you can imagine.

This was so dark and creepy. Dani was a boss FMC. She was taking care of herself while rescuing her brother. Jasper was almost perfect. I was surprised by the ending. It was a welcome surprise considering some dark romance, but as far as fiction goes, Jasper is a big would for me. I would absolutely love to find a weird guy minus some of the other stuff🤣

At first I had the pleasure of reading "It's Me, Charlie". Despite the shocking grossness contained in that book, I was hooked! Then I read "All I Want for Christmas is You" and knew I was going to forever read anything this woman put down on paper. And now...here she comes with "Love and Formaldehyde". I devoured this book!!!
Disclaimer: she is a completely SELF-PUBLISHED author so yes there are a few minor mistakes throughout the book. Go ahead and get over it! It does NOT take away from the story. I'm just putting it out there so I don't have to hear the comments about it.
This book gave me so many vibes. I'm a tabber and a note taker. I wrote down colonial goth as the feel of the book and the community the book takes place in. Pay attention to chapter seven and tell me you don't get "Secretary" vibes - you know, the movie with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal!!
I love Dani. She is such an intelligent and strongly written female character. Her only downfall is that she falls hard and falls fast. But I do love a good older man myself, so I can't complain (especially when I married one). In her case she forgot to learn anything about the man and finds out some horrific secrets. I won't spoil it, just know that I did not see any of these plot twists coming and that shock factor was amazing. Unfortunately, the male character Jasper, I would have fallen for him as well (if I were not a happily married spud). As soon as the author said he was dressed like the men in Peaky Blinders I was sold.
I enjoyed this book so much that this may be my favorite read from this author yet! I do want to share a few of my favorite quotes from this book. They have such an impact and I promise they are not spoilers:

I love Candy and I’ve been obsessed with her and with the two horror books I’ve read by her, Charlie and All I Want For Christmas Is You and I was super excited to learn she was doing a Horror Romance. Those are my two favorite things!
I loved the premise of this with the funeral home setting, age gap, lonely goth girl, and the creepy incidents that genuinely had my heart racing and on the edge of my seat. But I do feel like this didn’t read as well as the last two books I’ve read by her. I would have loved to see more tension/build up between the two MC’s, there were a lot of spelling/grammatical errors and I was expecting more horror craziness.
Although I will say I think this is a good starter book for those who are looking to get into horror since it’s pretty tame!

A perfect mix of romance and horror. The immediate chemistry between Dani and Jasper hooks you from the beginning and the horror elements will keep you clinging on to the very end.

First of let me say check the trigger warnings in this book. Disclosure: Love and Formaldehyde was my first C.M. Guidroz book consumed. I picked up the paperback version of this book on Amazon. Be prepared while reading to go on an unexpected walk of a struggling woman who finds an odd love in a small town.
Let me just start with I was not expecting the ending of this Story. Love and Formaldehyde opens up with childhood trauma building a solid foundation for the hero complex. We meet Dani as she is trying to carve her way out of her past by looking forward to the future. Dani who received her degree in Mortuary Science was very excited to find a job in a small town where she could have the fresh start she desperately needed. Now let's meet her boss the local Funeral Home Director and owner. There is an ominous picture that Dani can't quite see as she leads on to her new life, while establishing her new career and love interest. The Character backstory and development in this story were surprisingly well written. I am not sure I would classify this story as a Horror Book or a Romance as it has seemed to combine both genres together.
C.m did a beautiful job in writing this story. The scenes that she depicts are graphic in detail with a hint of spiciness. She managed to pull me into the Funeral home house of small horrors and take me on a wild ride. My heart does however break for Dani and you will see why, but, the twist in the ending wrapped this entire book in a present and completed it completely. I will be reading more C.m Guidoz books as she has a flowy-ness with her writing style that is easy to read. The hook lines will also grab your attention instantly.

I wanted to love this book, but it wasn't without its fair share of problems. First off, it needed to be proofread. There were a lot, and I do mean a lot of basic grammatical errors, to the point where it was distracting. Secondly, it needed to be line edited. The author's writing style was somewhat jarring to me. I enjoyed elements of her writing, and even highlighted several passages. I definitely appreciate what she was trying to do, but I don't think she pulled it off. Her writing felt stilted. The dialogue was particularly bad. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I don't like what happened to one of the characters. It was too corny and that type of thing has happened in too many movies. If you read the book, you probably know what I'm referring to. I think this author has a lot of potential, she just needs to hone her craft more and definitely edit, edit, edit. I wouldn't recommend this book, but I would say if the synopsis sounds intriguing, go ahead and pick it up. It's a short, quick read and the plot is interesting, if nothing else.

3⭐️ This story was a bit slow to start and took a while for me to get invested. And for such a short book, the pacing felt a little bit off for me.
For the first 50% I felt like the content was also a bit flat. I almost DNF at this point, but considering it’s such a short read I continued.
I’m glad I did in the end, because the plot twist was awesome. I really enjoyed the last like 20% of the read, but there wasn’t enough breadcrumbs.
For me, there wasn’t enough action in the first part to keep me going. I only kept going as someone who had read this book, was like “no you definitely need to keep going!”
I would’ve liked a bit more meat in the front end. Some more breadcrumbs to follow and hooks to get me interested. Overall it was a good read in the end.

Okay, yall ! This is extremely well written like O M G ! I was sucked into the plot, the storyline, the characters everything !
I loved the entirety of the BOOK, but just be READY for chapter 15 all the way through 17 because it was absolutely BRUTAL to read like loose your stomach contents , loose any hunger or thirst and make you lock your doors 3x -
I loved the way things tied itself up, though they could have been a little more detailed at the end there, but overall, it was a good read that definitely needed to read during HALLOWEEN 🎃!
ALSO, THE PLOT TWIST IN CHAPTER 13 HAD ME CLUTCHING MY PEARLS ! IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW !

This story quickly took a left turn exit off the highway with no exit in sight. "good luck everbody" as it crossed 4 lanes. cute small town romance with lots of build up and spicy with a sprinkling of crawlingyour way back from a hard knock life start to what could be a perfect rebuild...then bam, the exit from 4 lanes over happens.

Love and Formaldehyde had me feeling a range of emotions from anger to sorrow to cheering for a certain ending. Guidroz’s signature prose hits strong as we follow a relatable main character that solely wants a better life for her and her little brother. The story telling is immaculate as the writing unfolds to reveal the complexities of the characters.
