From USA TODAY Bestselling author Xavier Neal comes an all-new, best friends to lovers, forced proximity, bodyguard romance...
The assignment is simple.
Don't let the client get kidnapped.
Don't let someone kill her.
Don't confess that I've secretly been in love with her since we first met.
It's the last part that complicates what would otherwise be a fairly routine operation.
Well, that along with having to move said client aka my best friend into my penthouse because pretending to be a couple is now part of our cover.
All of these things make my mission significantly harder.
As does her ex boyfriend who just so happens to be our boss.
As does my partner who gets a kick out of making things uncomfortable for me.
As does my best friend herself when she has us crossing a line we can't uncross. To the company I work for, my main objective is to stop an unidentified threat from eliminating one of their most valuable assets.
But to me?
My only job is to protect the love of my life - or die trying.
(This is book 1 of a duet. The story will conclude in book 2, Shockproof)
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trope: friends to lovers Angst: 😱😱1/2 Smexy: 🔥🔥
Look at Xavier Neal trying to 🔪 us with the cliffy, lol. I hate duets. I hate trilogies. I never subject myself to them because: 1) brain fog makes me forget the deets (menopause is a beech) 2) I'd rather just have a really long book 3) Did I say brain fog yet? 😂 😂 But there's a couple of authors I'll willingly torture myself for and Xavier Neal is definitely one of them. I relate to her quirky heroines WAY too much to skip one. Slater is super hot and completely gone for his bff. I honestly don't know how he lasted so long, lol. The military references and humor were en pointe (super appreciated). Arley is my favorite kind of heroine: kinda odd and willing to take charge, lol. I loved them together and they completely made sense. Well written with great banter, Shatterproof is an action-filled, friends to lovers slow burn that you're not going to want to miss!
What the heck, I wasn't expecting that cliffhanger!!
I was hooked after reading a few of Xavier's books. I love her writing, and you fall in love with her characters. Wait until you meet Slater and Arley; you will love them. 🔥
I am trying to stay away from duets and series because the cliffhangers are 💀 me, but of course, I had to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Yes, this is a slow burn, but with everything going on, you hardly notice. I have so many questions, so I need her to hurry up and put out Shockproof now!
Shatterproof is the first book in the Shatter & Shock Duet and Book 2 in the Haworth Enterprises series by Xavier Neal, featuring a riveting best friends to lovers/bodyguard romantic suspense story. Slater Wahl redirected his well-honed military skills into the private security sector for Haworth Enterprises, where he met Arley Carmichael, a brilliant analyst with the most intriguing quirks, several years ago. They immediately became best friends, but are actually secretly in love with each other. As she is monitoring irregularities in her system she stumbles upon a glaring pattern that must be reported. Shortly after she does that, she gets attacked. Slater rushes to her side, worried that he waited too long to confess his love, only to find out he’s not the only man there who’s worried. Arley had once dated their boss and never told him! Slater declares himself her close protection bodyguard, and moves her into his penthouse as his fake girlfriend. Can he figure out who’s after her before it’s too late? And will they finally realize they are meant to be together?!
Wow! I couldn’t put this one down! There was tons of action, angst, the suspense/intrigue aspect kept me glued to the pages, and I absolutely adored the dynamic of Cowboy and Angel Cake!!😍 I swear the slow burn was driving me insane!😂 The poor man could not be more obvious about his feelings, but she doesn’t catch on!🤦🏼♀️ I get so frustrated when I read and characters just refuse to communicate!! But in this one it feels different. Maybe because of her sensory issues or something, but I just love them! Trust me though, they have the chemistry! They’re hot together!! But watch out for that cliffhanger!!👀 What is happening?! I hate cliffhangers. I didn’t do my research on this one. I may not make it!!😩😂 But whether you read this now or wait a bit, READ IT! I’m betting Shockproof will be worth it!
I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Xavier Neal once again delivers a couple that just took over my heart. Our H, Slater Wahl, has that alpha trait that sends shivers and excitement through my body while our h, Arley Carmichael, has the fierce attitude and soft spot for our H that makes my book heart soar. I am in love!!!
Slater and Arley are best friends and coworkers. Slater is an agent for a security firm and his role of a rescuer is more than just a job for him. And Arley’s role of an analyst is what makes the company tick along. And with her sorta unusual condition of reception, she gets a “feel” for people that helps her better understand more than most. Their relationship has this easy vibe. Each knows the other, well except for the teeny tiny fact that they’re in love but neither knows it or will admit the possibility. I love all the classic signs and yet, they didn’t see it lol. But when someone makes a move on Arley’s life, Slater goes from best friend to protector. No shortcuts. This assignment is the only one that counts, protect the woman that owns his heart.
Now enter the drama, her ex/their boss wants Arley back, someone in their company can’t be trusted, meddling friends, and pretend play leads to crossing lines that have both Slater and Arley realizing they have more than a friendship to work with.
I love how Slater was putty in Arley’s hands all while being her shield. And Arley was just different, the real woman, with Slater. He simply got her.
I’m anxiously awaiting Book Two for this couple’s outcome.
Slater and Arley have got me deep in my feels and perched right at the edge of my seat! This book offers up a vibrant tale that is rich with lush emotions, sultry heat, pulse-pounding action, and keep you guessing suspense. Trust me when I say that the thrills are every bit as ample as the feels and swoon in this book. These characters have amazing chemistry and give off wicked strong meant-to-be vibes, that have you fiercely in their corner from the start and I adored them both as individuals. Each has their baggage and that makes them super easy to connect with and feel for. This is book one of two, so yeah try to prepare for that looming cliffy that hits hard, leaves you gasping and anxiously anticipating the end of their story. It cannot get in my grabby hands fast enough to make me happy.
"Shatterproof" by Xavier Neal, the first installment of the Shatter and Shock Duet, is an exhilarating read that mirrors the intensity of an action-packed movie. The story effortlessly keeps readers engaged, even during quieter moments, reminiscent of a captivating on-screen adventure. The lively banter among the characters, especially our protagonists, injects the narrative with humor and charm, reaching a hilarious peak at one point. Slater, the charismatic southern gentleman, exhibits unwavering protectiveness towards his endearing "Angel Cake," showing that he is willing to go to any length to ensure her safety. Meanwhile, Arley's intelligence and quirky nature are showcased alongside her ability to take control of any situation. The chemistry between these two characters simmers like a pressure cooker, culminating in an electric explosion of tension that will leave readers breathless.
The book's unrelenting pace, filled with action, suspense, and a touch of angst, makes it nearly impossible to put down. The dynamic between the characters, playfully known as "Cowboy and Angel Cake," is a highlight, and the slow burn of their developing relationship adds to the compelling narrative. Get ready for a captivating chemistry between them that sizzles throughout. However, readers should be prepared for a cliffhanger that is as unexpected as it is tantalizing.
Xavier Neal's storytelling is precise and instantly captivating, inviting readers to fall in love with the characters. Slater and Arley's charming personas draw readers in, leaving them eager to uncover the next chapter of their journey. Neal's skill in creating relatable characters and a plot filled with twists and turns ensures that the sequel, "Shockproof," is a highly anticipated addition to the series. Whether you dive into this adventure now or wait in anticipation, this book is undoubtedly a must-read, promising a rollercoaster of drama, banter, and romance that will keep you hooked until the very end.

Tropes: Contemporary romantic suspense, best friends to lovers, bodyguard romance, workplace, forced proximity, fake relationship
The assignment is simple. Don't let the client get kidnapped. Don't let someone kill her. Don't confess that he's secretly been in love with her since they first met. It's the last part that complicates what would otherwise be a fairly routine operation. Well, that, along with having to move said client, aka Arley Carmichael, his best friend, into Slater Wahl's penthouse because pretending to be a couple is now part of their cover. All of these things make his mission significantly harder. As does her ex-boyfriend, who just so happens to be their boss. As does Wahl's partner who gets a kick out of making things uncomfortable for him. As does my best friend herself when she has them crossing a line they can't uncross. His only job is to protect the love of his life or die trying.
This story was another great example of why I love this author so much. It had killer action-packed scenes, epic banter, spice that's oh so nice, hilarious moments, characters I easily loved, and a plot that made it impossible to put down. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on book two. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
This ARC was kindly provided by the author and DS Book Promotions. All thoughts and opinions are my own within this review.
This book is a romantic suspense friends to lovers story following Slater and Arley (or Cowboy and Angel Cake - so cute!) who both work for the same security company. When Arley is targeted at work, she is given a bodyguard and who better to watch out for her than Slater, her best friend who has been in love with her for years?! And even better, why not add some forced proximity and have her move in with him?
Reading this book was like watching an action movie because there was always something keeping me engaged, even when there were slight lulls in action. The banter between all the characters but namely our protagonists had me cackling, but especially the hospital scene! Slater is a charming southern gentleman who is so protective of his Angel Cake and would do absolutely anything to ensure her safety. And Arley is so smart and a little quirky, but she will take charge like it's nobody's business. I absolutely adored both of them and the tension between them was like a pressure cooker but once it finally exploded it was electric! I will say that there were certain times I wished we could have seen more of their relationship being defined, but considering the insane cliffhanger this left off on, I trust Xavier Neal to give us all the drama, banter, and romance in book 2!
I will be recommending this to all of my friends and encourage those who love action movies, the bodyguard trope, fake dating, or friends to lovers to read this! There is quite a while to go until book 2 is released, but you won't want to miss the incredible world-building, well-rounded characters, and dizzying action of this duet!
Slater Wahl is ex military turned private security. He now works for Haworth Enterprises with his best friend, Arley. He’s great at what he does, but when Arley is in danger & needs protection, he drops everything, bc there’s no one better to protect the one he loves than himself.
Arley Carmichael is a research analyst who seems to be knocking on the wrong doors in her research. When she’s attacked leaving work one night, she finds herself trying to remember the self defense that Slater has taught her, so she SINGs.
After her attack, Slater finds that he can’t live life without her & vows to profess his feelings. This plan comes to a screeching halt when Arley’s ex-boyfriend, Harv/Harvey/Number Seventeen, who happens to be their boss, decides he’s made a mistake by leaving her.
Though Harvey feels that Wahl is under-qualified in this protection detail, Arley will have it no other way. Their forced proximity situation being locked away in Slater’s penthouse causes rising tension in areas these two have never explored. Their chemistry is palpable & undeniable. Both have unrequited feelings that blossom & become obvious. Harv doesn’t stand a chance.
This best friends to lovers / coworkers / bodyguard read was exciting, suspenseful, tension riddled, and hot! Though their story is unresolved, I just know that these two will have a great love story. The cliffy ending leaves me wanting so much more, as if the sparks between Slater & Arley didn’t already do that.
Holy hades, what was this adrenaline-fueled, edge-of-the-seat romantic suspense I just read?? Well, part one anyway, because this one ends in far more questions than answers, and we'll have to wait a year, A YEAR, for the rest of Slater and Arley's story. But the wait will be worth it, I’m sure, and a good chance to reread this one in preparation for Shockproof in August of ’24.
Slater Wahl and Arley Carmichael both work for Haworth Enterprises, a multifaceted securities company. He's an tough operative, she’s a brilliant analyst, and they’ve been best friends since the day they met.
When Arley is attacked leaving work one night, Slater insists he’s the best man to protect her, despite the protests from their boss, who is also Arley's ex. But time locked away from the world together in Slater's apartment gives him the chance to wipe any thoughts of Arley's ex from her mind and show her his true feelings while keeping her safe.
Though wordy at times, I flew through this in one sitting because it was impossible to put down. These two truly are made for each other, and their banter is so much fun, while the tension between them is electric. I love these characters and can’t wait to see what happens in the second half of their story. So whether you read this one immediately and hang off the cliff with the rest of us or wait until the second half is available, either way, you won’t want to miss it!
Xavier does it again…..this story, these characters, the action, and adventure is fantastic!
This book is filled with some of my favorite tropes - friends to lovers, suspense filled, and workplace romance.
Slater and Arley are two of my favorite characters that Xavier has written. The banter and sass between these two is off the charts and the slow burn…good lord…the slow burn is delightful. The shower scene is my favorite…prepare yourself!!
This book is faced paced and will have you binge reading so you can see what happens. We are left with quite the cliffy (but we know that going into this duet)…counting the days until the second book is released!
Love this read so much! I was pulled into this story, taken on the journey with them and I enjoyed every moment! Slater and Arley have an amazing friendship, best friends, and their banter throughout is on point. I laughed, I loved, and I held my breath at those intense suspenseful moments. This is such a great story and I am on the edge of my seat for more!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Get ready and hang on tight cause Slater and Arley are gonna take you for a ride in the first installment of this duet!!! Action, danger, angst, with hotness 🥵🔥 and cute pet names…it’s all in here. So buckle up buttercup and let’s get ready for book #2
When you’re forced to fake a relationship to keep your best friend safe, you’ll find it harder not to act on your feelings. She discovered something that someone wanted to keep hidden, and now they are after her. It’s hard to know what she needs protection from when she doesn’t know what it is or who is after her. Since then, Slater’s been stuck living with his best friend and trying not to act on his feelings, even though Arley feels the same way about him.
Working for Haworth Enterprises, Slater Wahl is putting his military training to good use. Despite the dangers of his missions, he has always been successful in rescuing people and bringing them home.
The two hit it off after getting stuck in an elevator together one day. Arley Carmichael is a brilliant analyst at the same company as Slater. Fast forward and the two are best friends who have feelings for each other.
Best friends turned lovers, bodyguard romance and forced proximity aren’t the only tropes you’ll find in this book. Shatterproof is the first book in the Shatter & Shock Duet. It ends on a cliffhanger. Although the story ends on a cliffhanger, it is still a must read for fans of bodyguard romance and fake relationships.
Unique characters are one thing to get you sucked into reading a book, but having more than one trope added to the mix, and this book will have you ensnared. I loved the banter between Slater and Arley. The chemistry between them was palpable, and it was really entertaining to read how they interacted. Their relationship was definitely the highlight of this book.
Arley was attacked one day, and since then, Slater has been acting as her bodyguard, making sure nothing happens to her again. I liked the forced proximity and how they had to fake a relationship to keep Arley safe. The book felt short but filled with many scenes that hook you in. I want to know who is after Arley and what Slater will do next. The ending left me wanting so much more.
I’ve enjoyed every other book by Xavier Neal wrote and will read more of her works in the future because I am dying to know what happens next with Slater and Arley. Her characters and way of writing are brilliant and unique. Some of her other characters from previous books were mentioned in this book and it's also a part of the Haworth Enterprises books, which explains why the cover looks similar to Bulletproof.
This author popped up on my radar when I was invited to review another book and unfortunately at the time, I was unable to. I was lucky enough to be invited again to review this one and boy am I glad that I had an opening to be able to help. This book was fantastic and very well written. The opening sentences of this book had me hooked. There's a casual, relaxed type of writing here that instantly makes you sit up and take notice. In explanation, the writing feels natural, nothing has been forced, and words flow. The banter, between these two characters couldn't be better. Their personalities really jump of the page and I love Arley and her quirks and differences. That's such a unique thing and makes this story even better. Slater on the other hand comes across as a big 'ole softie for Arley but when it comes to protection, he is possessive Alpha. While this book does have a bit of inner monologue, and it almost reads like a field report Slater has handed in after one of his ops, I absolutely love it! It makes the story, it makes the book and it's fitting. The personalities of these characters bleed from the pages and I can picture vividly everything that is said. It's a bit of a slow burn, we spend the first part of the book watching them tip toe around their feelings for one another, each too afraid of telling the other for fear of rejection and affecting what they have. I do think it's cute, but a smidge frustrating too! Slater's attitude changes after Arley is attacked however, but I'm surprised that Arley can't actually 'see' how he feels through his words. This book felt like I was watching an edge of your seat thriller with non-stop action. While I would have liked more spice, the anticipation and lead to when they finally crossed that line from best friends to something more was totally worth it! I loved how different and unique these characters were, and how perfect they are for each other. I loved the whole premise of this book and it has a really good storyline. That cliff-hanger had me frantically trying to turn my page because "no! It can't leave me hanging like that!" This is one of those books that I'd recommend to anyone that loves a slow burn, best friends to lovers, book that has plenty of action and excitement, with a sweet unique FMC and an Alpha hero with a southern drawl that will do anything for the woman he loves. Well done and thank you for the ARC, I cannot wait for the next one!
Shatterproof by Xavier Neal, is the first book of the duet The Shatter & Shock, here we meet Slater Wahl, he is a man trained as part of his military life, after leaving that life behind, he works at Haworth Enterprises, as part of their team offering security privately, when we meet Slater he is on a Rescue and Recovery mission, and although he would do it without having to charge, he was kidnapped as a child and knows what a terrifying fact like that marks someones life, It's the money he receives as payment for rescuing kidnapped children from wealthy families that allows him to give his mother a dignified and peaceful life, his life is his job and although he is in love with his friend Arley, he has never dared to tell her what he feels, since he believes that he is not up to the man she deserves and settles for being her best friend. Arlette "Arley" Carmichael, is this sweet, beautiful and super intelligent girl, who works at Haworth Enterprises, just like Slater, but she is part of the office staff working as an analyst, she is also secretly in love with Slater but never she would dare to tell him anything since he would never notice someone like her, and she settles for being her best friend. One night when Arley is working late, and she approaches her car, she is attacked and ends up in the hospital. Slater runs to her side and although no one knows what happened and she does not remember it, for him his instinct does not fail and he knows that there is something wrong with what happen to her and is something else behind this apparent fall. When he begins to investigate, he realizes that Arley is in danger, there is a hidden enemy with connections and money, which makes him even more dangerous, wanting to hurt the woman of his life, so he will do everything possible and impossible to protect her, beginning by taking her to live with him. All this will be the perfect climate for these two to discover their feelings, but when we thought that we would soon solve the mystery, oh how wrong I was! The author leaves us at a climactic moment on the edge of our seats and we will have to wait for the next book to get the answers we so badly need. This story is my first by this author and I was pleasantly surprised, it caught me from the first pages and I couldn't stop reading it, with angst, suspense, action and many sweet and love moments, I already want the next book. Highly recommended! *Thanks to Xavier Neal and DS Book Promotions and for my ARC. I voluntarily leave my honest review*
Altamente Recomendado! *Gracias a Xavier Neal y a DS Book Promotions y por mi ARC. Dejo voluntariamente mi reseña honesta*
When a brilliant analyst for a security company is targeted by a sinister entity, her best friend, colleague, and number one protector comes to the rescue. But is he too late?
I adore Slater and Arley’s relationship. As best friends, they know each other’s quirks, likes, and dislikes. But they are both fighting their true feelings for each other. Their love is so obvious to everyone but themselves. So, when Arley’s life is threatened, Slater, in no uncertain terms, appoints himself as Arley’s bodyguard and moves her into his home. Watch the feelings play out and the new sexy undercurrents take charge. Hot, hot, hot!
I’m normally not a big swooner, but Slater is my exception. He rescues little kids for a living. Amazing! The little things he does and says to Arley are so precious and heartfelt as well as alpha all the way. Yum! The comfortable mutual respect and trust between them is magical, and their hilarious banter is delightful. I can’t tell you how many times I laughed out loud at their wit and sarcasm. Watching Slater’s jealousy over her ex is a beauty to behold, and I was on Slater’s side all the way.
Arley’s mind is a wonderful thing. I had never heard of synesthesia before where Arley’s senses are crossed. For example, she can see words and hear colors. Her condition is advantageous to her job as she uses her unique skills to match client needs to security agents. Needless to say, her condition makes her different from the rest of the world leaving her isolated and reserved among people. The one person she can rely on is Slater who understands what she needs before she needs it. Except for the tampon thing. LOL
The suspense is off the charts as Slater displays his exciting and outstanding 007 skills to protect the woman he loves most. The man has guns everywhere in his house…including the bathroom. Yeah, that scene is hot and funny at the same time. But, I digress. The tension builds as Slater and friends get closer to the person frightening his woman. Do I have guesses about who the suspect is? Yes. Will I find out in this book? No…there’s a cliffhanger and it’s a doozy.
Slater’s fellow agents and good friends are funny and ruthless in their job and Blu’s woman Aviva (the bug lady) is a treat. Also, I really liked Slater’s unsuccessful date, Lily, who pegged Slater’s love for another woman with no animosity. In fact, she gave him great advice. Last but not least is Harv, Arley’s and Slater’s boss and the man who dumped Arley years ago. What’s he up to? I’ll have to see in the final book.
From the action-packed opening pages to the surprising heart-stopper ending, this book had me turning pages as fast as I could. Pick up this thrilling, romantic, and amusing story, you won’t be disappointed.
Thank you to Ms. Neal for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
Shatterproof is the first book in the Shatter & Shock Duet by Xavier Neal, a USA TODAY Bestselling author of romance novels. It is a friends-to-lovers, forced proximity, and bodyguard romance that follows the story of two best friends who have to pretend to be a couple as part of a covert operation.
The book is told from the alternating perspectives of the two main characters, both employees of Haworth Enterprises, a company specializing in security and protection services. The male protagonist is a skilled and experienced bodyguard who has been secretly in love with his best friend since they met. The female protagonist is a valuable company asset with a mysterious past and a dangerous enemy. When she becomes the target of an unidentified threat, her best friend is assigned to protect her and move her into his penthouse. As they live under the same roof, their friendship turns into something more, but they also face challenges and risks that could jeopardize their lives and relationships.
The book is fast-paced and suspenseful, keeping the reader engaged and invested in the story's outcome. The author does a great job of creating realistic and likable characters who have chemistry and banter. The book also has some steamy, romantic scenes that spice up the plot. The book ends with a cliffhanger that leaves the reader wanting more and eager to read the second book in the duet, Shockproof.
Shatterproof is a book I would recommend to fans of romance, especially those who enjoy the forced proximity trope and the bodyguard theme. The book delivers on its promise of being friends to lovers, forced proximity, and bodyguard romance with a twist. It is a book that will make you laugh, swoon, and gasp as you follow the adventures and emotions of the two main characters. It is a book that will shatter your expectations and shock you with its twists and turns.
Mrs. Neal delivers with her Steamy and Romantic stories that leave you gasping towards the end.
So, I went into this completely blind and obviously didn’t pay attention because I had no idea this was a duet. Shatterproof is the first book in the Shatter & Shock Duet, and it starts off with a bang and ends with a crazy cliffhanger, so be prepared.
Slater and Arley both work for a security company and have been best friends for years since they got stuck in an elevator together. They have been mutually pining after each other for years, but they both feel like the other is out of their league, and they don’t want to ruin their close relationship. They had such a close friendship that felt real. I think this is the perfect friends to lovers but also focused on the suspense elements when Arley is attacked.
Slater basically appoints himself as her bodyguard and moves her into his place till they figure out who is targeting her. Now we have a great forced proximity situation, which finally forces them to acknowledge their connection. I loved their banter, and the dynamic between them was so sweet. Things really got spicy, and I could feel their chemistry.
🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
I was lucky to receive the ALC from DS Book Promotions. Troy Kain and Sable Lyn did a fantastic job with the banter and connection of the characters. It brought excitement with all of the suspense in this book, and I listened to this in one sitting. Some parts felt a little choppy, or the pacing didn’t flow with the female narrator. However, I loved Troy’s performance, especially during the action scenes and sexy times.
Thank you to DS Book Promotions for providing the ALC.
This book has seamlessly claimed its spot as my favorite read from this author this year. Slater and Arley had me teetering on the edge of my seat, hungrily devouring each page of this rollercoaster of emotions, heat, action, and suspense.
Shatterproof is the first half of the Shatter & Shock Duet and serves as the second installment in the Haworth Enterprises series. This is a best friends-to-lovers romantic suspense. Slater Wahl, a former military expert now working in the rescue and recovery department for Haworth Enterprises, and Arley Carmichael, a brilliant analyst with sensory issues and intriguing quirks.
The chemistry between Slater and Arley is nothing short of spectacular, radiating undeniable "The One" vibes. The writing and flow of the book are great. It captures the authenticity of Slater and Arley connection and friendship, making the story immensely relatable and emotionally resonant.
The pacing of the book is impeccable, striking a perfect balance between heart-pounding action, soul-stirring angst, and relentless suspense. The slow-burn romance between Slater and Arley is good on its own, but the suspense held me captivated.
While I will admit that the characters' reluctance to express their feelings did induce some frustration, the overall enjoyment of the book remained unscathed. The chemistry and depth of emotion between Slater and Arley were strong enough given the moments of uncertainty and hesitation.
I am highly anticipating part two. It's promising more thrills, revelations, and undoubtedly heart-wrenching moments.
Wow!! Shatterproof is the first book in the Shatter & Shock duet and what a treat it was to read. If you enjoy friends-to-lovers, humour with your spice, then this is for you...
I loved Arley Carmichael, she is an intelligent, feisty woman, but sadly does not recognise her worth outside of her professional life. Suffering from synesthesia, she sees the world differently and it can be a scary place for her because of this.
When there is a threat and subsequent attack made against her, Slater Wahl, steps right up to the plate to protect her and becomes so much more than a bodyguard. He too has suffered trauma in his past and is a damaged soul.
These two!! Serious unrequited love as they had put each other firmly in the friend-zone over the years.
When they realised that their feelings were real and reciprocated... cue holy hotness and steam galore when they finally act on their desires. They are so perfectly imperfect for each other and are the healing balm they both need.
Blue is the colour of love and devotion
That cliffhanger was a doozie and I can't wait to find out what happens in Shockproof... deep breaths until release.
P.S. I love all the pop culture refs, they had me chuckling out loud, thanks Xavier 😊.
ARC Review Shatterproof The Shatter & Shock Duet #1
I was asked by the lovely Xavier Neal if I could review her last book, at the time I was having health problems. I told her to hit me up on her next release to see if I was doing better, and even though I am not 100% better I was better enough to be able to start reading ARC's again, so here we are.
Reading Slater and Arley's story was a breath of fresh air. Here we have two best friends who are madly in love with one another but don't think the other is interested, boy if only they knew they were both wrong.
I loved their playful flirting. That man Slater had me blushing up a storm and the nicknames "Cowboy" and "Angel Cake" Honestly, never heard the name Angel Cake used as a nickname in a book before, so that was refreshing.
This is my first time reading a friends-to-lover romance and I was surprised that I was actually enjoying this trope.
I will say it's a slow burn cause we don't get into the actual spice until towards the end which is fine because like I said all the flirting made up for that. There is also lots of action and ends with a cliff hanger so I am looking forward to the next book. It is also a short read for people who love to read something quick.
Holy moly!! I LOVE CLIFFHANGERS and something as crazy as that one was AWESOME!!!! I have so many questions and can’t wait for the next book!! I am so in love with this authors writing!!
I absolutely love Arley and Slater’s friendship! Their connection is so freaking swoon!! I fell hard for Slater from the beginning BUT then the opened his mouth about why he doesn’t tell Arley and I got annoyed….with both of them. You can just feel it in their connection when they talk to each other, I have no idea how they couldn’t see it either. They both needed a kick to their bottoms but I don’t like how things started to change. I worried so much for Arley and my worry only grew and grew each time another theory was put out there! (Also, a little suspicious of a certain bee friendly woman but that could just me being crazy.)
I thought several times the author was going to say “just kidding, it was a dream” but nope; crazy kept happening!! I loved it so much though!! I am so on edge and I was hiding last night trying to finishing! I got to the end and kept trying to swipe when there wasn’t any but AHHH, that was such a good place to stop!!
Slater and Arley met 6 and 1/2 years ago when they got stuck in an elevator at their work (Hawthorne Enterprises)on Slater's first day on the job. Slater and Arley both love each other and they tell each other that as well but just as best friends. They both don't think they are good enough for the other person so neither of them speaks up to express how they really feel. Arley discovers something at their job in the paperwork that puts her at risk unknowingly. She gets attacked and Slater is assigned to protect her. One high rise, 2 gorgeous people and an amazing slow burn. Xavier is amazing at really getting so much detail on a page. The fight scenes are amazing and I feel like I'm really there inside a thirty something year old ex-military man turned private sector. Even the bromance between Slater and Blu is really realistic and just how I imagine dudes talk. I highly recommend this book one in the duet. Looking forward to Book 2!
UMM EXCUSE ME!!! THE CLIFFHANGER?? I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHOOOO
Arley is a highly intelligent woman who works for a company that saves kidnapped children. She’s always had a crush on her best friend but believes he’s Wayyyy out of her league.
Slater was in the military and now works to save the children and goes on the missions. He has a crush on arley but doesn’t tell her as he feels like it’s not reciprocated.
Omg I love them so much you don’t understand. Also I need to know what happens next! You can’t just leave it there!!! But I loved this book 🥰
I want to thank Xavier for allowing me an arc to this book I am so appreciative and know people are gonna LOVEEEE it 🥰🥰
Man I was into this book. Like page after lovely page and bam!!!! The ending just left me hanging. Agghhhh..... Like why did it have to end that way.
So this book is a friends to lovers troop with rescue missions and lots of danger. It is a nonstop adventure with quirky fun and steamy love. The character line up is spot on and I think I fell in love with Slater immediately.
When reading this book I picture the movie Spy with Melissa Mccarthy. Not the actual movie, but the interactions between Melissa and Jude Law. The banter between them is like Arley and Slater. Crush and Hot Spy man. *wink wink*
Now let's talk about the slow burn in this book. I tell you, there were times when I yelled out for them to just get it on already. I mean these two tip toe around the entire book. Agh!! Anyone can see these two belong together so I wish they would just get to it already.
I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what happens next, because again that ending was epic and I am starving to find out what happens next.
I laughed, I cried, and I can't wait until the second half of their story.
Slater is an Agent at Haworth Enterprises. Arley is an analyst at the same company. They are friends, best friends. But things get complicated when Arley starts digging into something people don't want her too. After she is attacked in the parking lot Slater takes the case. They have to figure out why she is being targeted and by who. Can he find out what is going on and keep his friend safe? And can he finally admit his feelings for her? Because that might be his scariest mission yet.
I loved the couple. Slater is a southern gentleman/badass agent. Arley is a brainiac and knockout data analyst. They are their own but they gave me Penelope and Derek from Criminal Minds vibes. And I was all for it.
This is the first part of a duet and I can't wait to continue their story.
Slater (MMC) is the protective, ex-military security worker, hot best friend that every girl needs. Arley (FMC) is the sassy and intelligent woman that every man needs. When Arley’s intelligence leads her to being in the cross hairs of a bad guy, who else would protect her than her ex-military BFF. While faced with the forced proximity to keep his ‘Angel Cake’ safe, lines are crossed and steam builds with these two.
While trying to find the bad guys after his best friend, he needs to put trust in others, which has him questioning who the real bad guy is.
I was devouring this fun and yummy book that I hit the end before I was ready. I also love the humor that Xavier weaves into her books. Can’t wait for book two of this duet.
This was my first read from this author and I immediately want the second half. I was pulled into the story right away, and felt like I was waiting for things to pop up or danger to strike through the whole book. Slater and Arley’s relationship pulls at all my heart strings, as they are the best of friends and very clearly in love with one another. Arley is attacked one night, and Slater becomes her personal protection, lines get blurred and crossed. Feelings start to become more serious and real as does the threat that seems to be coming for Arley. I enjoyed this story, their friendship, and their pet names for one another especially. Anxiously, now awaiting book two, cause that cliffhanger through me for the biggest loop.
