A SWEET and FUNNY romantic comedy for readers of Sandy Barker and Mandy Baggot.
When your life goes off-piste how do you climb back up the mountain?
Holly Roberts is well-known among family and friends for despising the cold, so no one is more surprised than her when she agrees to pack her bags and move to the Swiss Alps. But after getting her heart broken, spending the winter season working as a sous-chef for wealthy twins Genevieve and gorgeous Luca, is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Verbier is home to millionaires and Holly has never felt more out of place in the snow-capped wooden chalet. Thankfully new friends, chalet girl Liv and chef Xavier are there to be her guide in this new world of après-ski and fondue, and to teach her how to get off chair lifts! And then there is Luca... rich, handsome, kind but what is the catch?
She just wanted to escape her problems but could she get her Happily Ever After?
I enjoyed this debut novel from Walker and liked that it wasn’t a completely Christmas story. Instead, this book takes you away to the snowy slopes of the Swiss Alps, with Christmas just a small feature in the plot. In my mind, this makes it a perfect winter get-away.
Holly has escaped to the Swiss Alps after her relationship ended in disaster. I was a bit bemused by her character because it is implied that she has self-taught knowledge of working in the kitchen, coupled with her experience in a London restaurant. Yet, when Holly is in Switzerland, she is a full-blown sous-chef, a sommelier and apparently highly skilled in cooking. I don’t think the writer successfully conveyed the extent of Holly’s talents because it felt like her journey to the chalet also included her employment skills being improved!
Life at the chalet feels like it is on another planet. Brother and sister, Luca and Genevieve, are wealth personified. It is like “upstairs downstairs” in the chalet as Holly, Xavier and Liz are serving the wealthy clients and being ignored at the same time. The disregard that the wealthy siblings show towards others made me a bit uncomfortable and the extreme “cash flashing” that Luca does did not do much to improve my opinion of him.
Along with Luca, I disliked most male characters in the novel. They all have a creepy “ick” factor about them and I could not trust them in the slightest. I disliked Holly’s ex and could not see how she had ever felt attraction towards him. Luca clearly has hidden intentions and he is an obvious user; I was frustrated by the flattery Holly felt by Luca’s attention. Finally, Xavier is also a bit shifty with his wife being left behind in Paris and Xavier barely acknowledging married life. Sadly, I could not warm to any of these characters, making the story less appealing to me.
Despite this, I enjoyed escaping to the slopes to see Holly’s life as a sous-chef and what she gets up to over the skiing season. There is plenty of food discussed in this book – thankfully you can’t absorb the calories that are described! I think Walker vividly transports readers away to this snowy, indulgent world and I liked seeing Holly’s adventures as she is evidently out of her comfort zone. Yes, it is not the most action-packed, there is not much romance and barely any festivities, but it was still an enjoyable read to see what would happen next in this bizarrely rich world that Holly now inhabits.
Therefore, if you are done with Christmas stories but are not quite ready to depart to warmer climates, this snowy offering from Walker will be a great fit as you experience hot chocolate, face-planting in the snow and the lure of the après ski.
With thanks to Aria Fiction and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
2.5 ⭐️ After Holly is left at the altar, she leaves London to work in a private chalet in Verbier. I loved many elements of this book - Holly’s self-discovery, the found family, the descriptions of Verbier, the food and the wine - but the actual romance fell completely flat. The synopsis doesn’t indicate Xavier as the MMC but rather Luca. The book spends far too much time on a love triangle and relationship that will go nowhere and then BAM in the last 15% of the book she finds out Xavier is in a fake relationship and is free to be with Holly. It comes out of nowhere. Also after working his debt off for 3 years, he’s giving up his Parisian restaurant and moving to Tuscany?!?! A better novel would have been one where Xavier and Holly are the sole focus and the ending wasn’t a cobbled together mess.
I am afraid that this was not a book for me. It should have been right up my alley but it fell so short for me. We meet Holly in the months before she is due to get married, that deosn't happen and she is given the opportunity to go to Verbier for the winter, to work as a sous chef for a wealthy pair of siblings. She goes and makes friends with the chef and chalet maid also working at the chalet. The male sibling really annoyed me, he was an arrogant, pushy wealthy man who thought that Holly was his personal play thing. There were situations where I was internally screaming at Holly to get away from him. His antics annoyed me so mch that I skipped a number of chapters. Then there was the situation that Xavier the chef was in. For me not a good read.
Such a cozy, fun read around this time of year. Thoroughly enjoyed it, I could predict where the story was going at some point but that didn’t matter as it was still nice to see how everything unfolded!
Holly absolutely despises the cold and everyone knows it. So when she packs her bags to move to the Swiss Alps everyone is surprised, including herself. But after a heartbreak, it’s exactly what she needs. Where she is going is the home of billionaires and she feels out of place. Luckily, she makes new friends Liv and Xavier and they show her the ropes in the new and cold place. And then there’s Luca, handsome and rich but where’s the catch?
Escape to the Swiss Chalet was a nice, fast, and light read. There’s drama and romance, all things enjoyable in a romantic comedy. If you’re looking for something sweet, this will hit the spot.
Thank you NetGalley and Aria & Aries for the ARC and the chance to read and review it honestly.

My Opinion
First of all I would like to draw your attention to the stunning cover. This really appealed to me so I knew that I had to give it a read. For me this was a great debut novel, there is a lot going on and there is a real pace to the story. With plenty of wintry weather this is an ideal book to read curled up on a cosy evening.
Carrie Walker has given us some gorgeous descriptions of food, so make sure you have snacks on hand whilst reading. This was a nice, light-hearted book to read that whisked me away.
If you’re in the mood for a light, fun, and heartwarming read with great food, skiing, and a love for the mountains, this book is exactly what you need. And if you’ve ever read Sophie Kinsella, you’re going to love it even more!
I went into this one not knowing much about the author, Carrie Walker, and it turns out this is her debut novel. I actually picked it up because the second book, Escape to the Tuscan Vineyard, is part of a reading challenge, and I had to start with book one first. And honestly? I’m so happy I did 😍😍😍
At first, I wasn’t fully into it because it didn’t match the energy I was looking for, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. The story follows Holly, who moves to Switzerland after her fiancé ditches her at the altar (yikes). But instead of dwelling on the past, she takes the time to rediscover herself—what she loves, what she wants out of life, and how to be truly happy. She throws herself into her passion for cooking, makes new friends, and finds confidence in herself again. And maybe she finds love along the way too 🤭🤭🤭
If you’re in the mood for a cozy, feel-good read with this kind of vibe, I totally recommend it!
This had a cute cover, great food descriptions and an interesting setting (the Swiss Alps) but the overall story was just mediocre for me. I liked the learning how to ski scenes but the actual romance between the two MCs lacked chemistry and there was a huge miscommunication last minute break up that was annoying/felt too contrived. The story also ended weirdly abruptly (but maybe my audio copy was missing some files??). Either way it was a miss for me, wouldn't not go out of my way to recommend.
I really wanted to like this one!. The premise was an interesting idea, a girl who hates the cold most in the world moves to Switzerland after a bad break up to work at a ski resort, but it took so long for something to actually happen I got pretty bored. I made it about 25% though the book before I Dnf'd.
3.75 rounded up. Thanks for the e-arc! I genuinely enjoyed it! It was funny and sweet, and Xavier had my heart melting. I just thought it wrapped up so quickly at the end. I would have liked a nice quick Tuscany epilogue.
A book about what happens after life goes wrong. How impulse decisions can have big life changing consequences. Full of romance and joy and some tears. It’s the perfect curl up with hot cocoa book. I loved it.
Escape to the Swiss Chalet is a lovely novel, perfect to read during the winter with some hot chocolate…or maybe a glass of wine. You will be tempted to try the many drinks, main dishes and desserts that Carrie Walker so aptly describes. The story moves along fast and without glitches, starting with a very hopeful Holly counting the days until her wedding. After a painful and mostly unexpected breakup, she moves from London to the ski town of Verbier, in the Swiss Alps. Quite a change for someone who couldn’t stand feeling cold! That’s how she describes herself: “Maybe it was being a winter baby; I came into the world snuggled in a blanket and zipped into a onesie and not much has changed in twenty-seven years. Soft, warm and cosy was how I liked it.” Holly’s transformation into a ski bunny of sorts is funny and heartwarming. And I could certainly identify with her first attempts at skiing and snowboarding. As for the romance part…there are two handsome men around, but you may find yourself asking Holly to stay away from one of them, no matter how good looking! Walker’s descriptions of Verbier are also superb…you will feel like you are there, either in the middle of a fun après-ski party or inside Rachael’s good smelling pâttisserie…or making your way down the piste while the mountain is lit only by torches. I also loved the use of French throughout the story, enough to give it the right flavor without ruining understanding. As it happens with all good books, I was a little sad when it ended. But thankfully, Escape to the Tuscan Vineyard is ready for preorder. Can’t wait to continue reading about Holly’s adventures!
Thank you NetGalley and Aria & Aries for the ARC extract of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This story seemed to be setting up for such a sweet and enjoyable winter holiday romance! From the bright and beautiful cover that captures winter’s beauty and magic to the fun lightheartedness of the story, it pulled me right in!
In this extract, we learn more about the FMC, Holly’s, backstory of job loss, and how she ended up at her current job through her passions for food and wine. But we know where she’s at in life isn’t her end goal. We catch hints that perhaps she deserves more than her relationship with George, who we meet drunkenly sprawled on the steps of Holly’s workplace and know. Has a dislike for her beloved cat. There’s more out there for our Holly!
The writing was a little too casual for me, for example, at one point the acronyms “ffs” are used outside of a text message. I feel like it could’ve been written out in full form or normally. Additionally, the writing in some places didn’t flow very well as there were a lot of metaphors jam-packed on one page or kept coming one after the other which would take away from the impact of some of them. However, this didn’t put me off the story entirely as I’m still curious to see what happens next!
So far, I enjoyed the story and I think the excerpt gave us enough insight into who Holly was and is, her and George’s dynamic, while also sprinkling in the side characters who will hopefully come more into play, like Margot. It always is a good sign when those side characters stand out to me or the things they say, as she did!
When I finished the extract, I found myself wishing I had the rest of the story, desperate to know more and to find out what was in store for Holly’s future. Because of this, I will definitely be picking up this book when it is released to see where this story goes!
There was a lot of potential for this book. The scenery was beautiful and well written. Sadly, the winter wonderland background was the only thing I enjoyed about this book.
Holly is a woman in her late 20’s who is unfortunately left at the altar right before she is supposed to walk down the aisle. She is blindsided by this change in her life (totally understandable), but then goes on a pity spiral for 2 months. During this pity party she doesn’t go to work or communicate with anyone unless they come to her bed at her parent’s house. Her old boss randomly recommends her for a spot as staff at a chalet in the Swiss Alps working for a rich family during ski season. A trip and experience of a lifetime that is all expenses paid. Sounds like the perfect way to recover from heartache and to rediscover herself. It should have been perfect. Instead Holly spends the whole time not understanding that she is working for the family and continues to be upset that they don’t see her as a friend or possible girlfriend. There were a lot of hard cringe moments that made me put the book down for a while. The ending felt very rushed and abrupt with several main plot points changing and then boom last page.
Thank you to Aria & Aries and NetGalley for an eArc of this book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Aria & Aries and author Carrie Walker for providing me with this eARC
After being left on her wedding day Holly gets the opportunity to go to a Swiss Chalet for the season and learn from a Michelin star chef to improve her cooking skills. There she meets new friends, new romance and rediscovered who she really is.
Overall I really enjoyed Escape to the Swiss Chalet. It was a fast, light read with drama, romance, friendship and self-discovery.
There are some little things that REALLY annoyed me. And I know they are small details and I’m nitpicking but things like these immediately take me out of the story: - our MC paying in Euros - we do not and have never used Euros in Switzerland! - a french chef using pint as a measurement - a french dude having the thermostat for his wine cellar in Switzerland set in Fahrenheit - the MCs room apparently being 3 sq meters but fitting a wardrobe, a dressing table and two twin beds, when the twin beds alone take up more than 3 sq meters of space… magic?? - the shorthand WTF, FFS - super jarring!
A big thanks to NetGalley and the author for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
For a debut novel, I feel like this author really has a great grasp of her unique writing style. I loved the integration of French and English, and feeling like I was really there, drinking the wines and tasting the food. I feel like the story was interesting, and well written too. It just didn’t feel very much like a romance novel, more like adult fiction.
There was a vague sense of longing from one of the characters, but overall just several different awkward encounters that somehow budded into a relationship in the very last chapter. I kept wondering when the romance, that I assumed I would be getting lots of from viewing the rom-comy cover, was going to kick in. And while there were several sweet gestures, I found that I was kept waiting.
Granted, I don’t feel like this was a bad read, I just wouldn’t go into it expecting a mushy sort of romance. Or spice ;)!
I really enjoyed reading it. It has been such a cozy read for me. The storyline is also quite heart-warming and I had a great time Reading it on Netgalley.
I really love the cover photo of this book and that is what caught my eyes before anything else and I knew that I had to read it.
I am so excited to buy my copy of this book. It has been such an immersive read for me.
Escape to the Swiss Chalet by Carrie Walker is a heartwarming tale that takes readers on a journey from the familiar comforts of home to the breathtaking beauty of the Swiss Alps. In this delightful book, we meet Holly Roberts, a woman known for her aversion to cold weather. So it comes as a surprise to everyone, including Holly herself, when she decides to embark on an adventure and relocate to the snowy landscapes of Verbier. The catalyst for this unexpected change of heart is a devastating breakup. Seeking solace and a fresh start, Holly finds herself working as a sous-chef for the wealthy twins, Genevieve and the enigmatic Luca. As she settles into her new role, she discovers that the winter season in the Swiss Alps holds more for her than just a job; it becomes a transformative experience. One of the novel's strengths lies in its vivid portrayal of Verbier, a place bursting with opulence and inhabited by millionaires. Holly initially feels like a fish out of water in this world of snow-capped chalets, but she soon finds solace and friendship in her fellow chalet girl, Liv, and the talented chef, Xavier. Together, they navigate the intricacies of this unfamiliar environment, teaching Holly the joys of après-ski and the art of conquering chair lifts. However, the true allure of Holly's new life lies in the magnetic presence of Luca. Described as rich, handsome, and kind, Luca becomes a central figure in Holly's journey. But as the story unfolds, the reader can't help but wonder: what is the catch? Carrie Walker skillfully builds suspense, keeping readers engaged and eager to unravel the mysteries surrounding Luca and his intentions. Escape to the Swiss Chalet is a delightful blend of romance, self-discovery, and the beauty of embracing new experiences. Carrie Walker's writing effortlessly transports readers to the picturesque Swiss Alps, making them feel as though they are right there alongside Holly, breathing in the crisp mountain air and marveling at the stunning landscapes. The characters are well-developed, relatable, and their interactions add depth to the narrative. In conclusion, Escape to the Swiss Chalet is a captivating novel that will warm the hearts of readers. It takes us on a journey of personal growth, friendship, and the power of embracing unexpected opportunities. Carrie Walker weaves a tale that is both enchanting and thought-provoking, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Holly's life.
After being dumped at the alter by her fiancée George, Holly needs a change. That change appears as the role of sous-chef for Genevieve and Luca in the Swiss Alps at their chalet in Verbier for the winter season. Holly may not be looking for love but it has a funny way of creeping up on you when you least expect it.
If you are looking for a cosy read and a book that you can escape into then this is that book. As soon as I started to read I was transported to the Swiss Alps and Verbier with Holly. I love snow so it was nice to visit a place where snow wasn’t in short supply. The story had everything I wanted in a cosy, sweet and easy read. It had a picturesque location, a funny main character, some comedic moments and a dash of romance.
Holly was a very likeable character. She’s been through quite a lot. Holly was with her fiancée George since they were at university, their lives pretty much revolved around each other and they had a plan. But when Holy is jilted at the alter everything she thought she knew and that life plan was thrown away in an instant. So I think it was quite brave of Holly to take up this new role, but she embraced this new challenge and everything that went with it. Some of my favourite scenes were when Holy was learning to ski and snowboard which involved falling many times but she never gave up. At the same time she has the chance to learn from top chef Xavier and develop her culinary skills. The descriptions of food and the dishes being created sounded utterly amazing and mouthwatering.
I loved Holly’s sense of humour. She’s very funny and comedic without even trying, like when she nearly does the splits while on a ski lift and when she ends up wearing a nightie which she’d mistaken for her work uniform.
Although Holly isn’t looking for any kind of romantic relationship she finds herself involved in a bit of a love triangle with Xavier and Luca. I won’t say anymore but I knew from the beginning who Holly should be with.
A heart warming story best read when you’re wrapped in a blanket.
| This is a story that I see the possibility of pleasing the YA (Young Adult) readers, mainly because of the setting, the plot and writing style.
| I found it fun to follow Holly's story, breaking her own barriers and leaving her comfort zone at a time in her life when her choices made sense. Strengths were the various culinary moments (which made me craving for good food), fun scenes on the ski and the vast knowledge of wine. Even I, who doesn’t know anything about it, think that I learned some names by reading this book! In terms of characters: Xavier and Rachael are the ones who deserve honorable mention.
| Now, let's go to the part I didn't like. I was waiting for the romance to happen and nothing, not at least up to 60% of the book... Not even a considerable interaction. Holly's bad decisions because of a man also bothered me, especially cause he was the one that clearly didn't deserve the slightest of her attention. At several times I wanted her to realize the mess she was facing, but it didn't happen... she kept putting a lot of faith in him - and only her was thinking that he was a perfect man. Which, for me, he was one of the most boring, selfish and arrogant man I've ever read about.
It is Michelle's debut novel and I think her future works will be promising, as her ideas are good and her writing style is really enjoyable.
I was really excited about this one but unfortunately this particular book didn't work for me.
✨Thank you NetGalley, Carrie Walker and Aria & Aries for allowing me to read this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Holly and George are packing up to leave London, get married, and live in the countryside in a brand new home. They have been engaged for years and now George wants to settle down and start a family. Holly isn’t convinced that’s what she wants quite yet. After being made redundant from her corporate job, she settled in to work in her favorite French restaurant as a sous chef. No, it doesn't pay a lot of money., but she loves it. As her wedding day approaches, she’s so excited but George does a runner and jilts her. She is so depressed and after soon after her boss at the French restaurant tells her of a job working at a Swiss chalet for a wealthy duo. As she hates the cold, she’s not sure but realizes she needs to make a drastic change in her life so she accepts.
When she arrives, she is delighted to meet the chef, Xavier, and chalet girl, Liv. Holly will be working directly with Xavier preparing meals and choosing the perfect wines from the owner’s vast collection.
Owners Luca and Genevieve, twins, arrive the next day and are served an elegant dinner. They have many business people that they will entertain while they are there.
As Holly settles in, Xavier and Liv introduce her to snowboarding and the apres-ski scene.
I really enjoyed the delicious descriptions of the food that Xavier prepared. So yummy and so French! This is a fun book that imparts lots of secrets about food preparation and secrets to learning to ski. The characters are all so genuine. Enjoy!

Holly Roberts, known for her dislike of cold, decides to move to the Swiss Alps to work as a sous chef for wealthy twins Genevieve and Luca. Despite feeling out of place, she finds support from chalet girl Liv, chef Xavier, and Luca, who is wealthy and kind, but not all things are good, right?
This was an amazing cast, and I liked everyone other than George and Luca. I didn't like either of them from the start. Holly was sweet and, at times, lost because of her past, which led to her making the wrong decisions.
The setting and all the talk about food were beautiful and tempting. I wish I had my own chef to date. This book was more about self-discovery and giving life and love a chance to come your way, and it was well written.
It was a feel-good and cozy read that will have you sitting with a blanket and some wine, champagne, hot chocolate, or coffee. Trust me, you will want to get as comfortable as possible.
This was a slow read, and I just felt there should have been more romance and chemistry to make it believable because otherwise it felt like adult/woman fiction. The last chapter kind of wraps it all up, with the other chapters feeling like a stretch. However, I can see many people liking this because of the descriptions and writing style.
Overall, it was a good read.
Thank you Rachel's Random Resources for having me on the tour.
