The Difference Between

Rate this book
Elf-Orc Man-Love Erotic Fantasy! Rotic was a whore when his father found him, a warrior of some renown when he became a leader of the Chieftain's Orc Army, and a confused half human hybrid when he was gifted with a consort. But Rotic always knew his place in life and nothing would ever take his position away from him. Ogun was a whore when he was brought to the castle of the High Orc Chieftain as a broken used tribute, named Consort when he met his partner, and lost in a whole new way of life before the sun had set. He had a new position, a growing relationship with his new partner, and the best sex of his life. Nothing could ever ruin this. But with treacherous humans threatening the Orc Nation, magical and cultural land mines to traverse, and the advent of a wife being added to the mix, Ogun and Rotic felt their lives changing faster than they can blink. Now with little time to prepare and several personal issues to overcome, Ogun and Rotic have to learn to adjust and overcome before the differences between them become an insurmountable mountain that can destroy them both.

I really enjoyed the first two thirds of this book very much. The characters were so different and the world building was fantastic. The Orc society was explained well. They are fierce warriors with simplistic views on whether someone is fit to continue to live or not. They are very loyal to those who have proven themselves whether in battle or just strength of character. The Mother's were a force to be reckoned with and were rather funny. I have to say that my main problem with this book has nothing to do with the writing just personal preference. The last third of the book was about the MC's finding a wife that is suitable for them both and while there was no sex, I felt like it really detracted from the MC's own story. Their relationship was so new and I would have been happier had that been explored more. It still was an entertaining book that I enjoyed.

Stephanie Burke writes very interesting and well thought out books and I have enjoyed everything that I have read of hers, this book included. Instead of having the much more common idea of the Orc’s as the brutish enemies of the good guys in this story they are the (sort of) good guys. Although this book follows Rotic, a partly human character who is adopted by an High Orc Chieftain it becomes a lesson in Orc culture as imagined by Ms. Burke. I was absolutely fascinated by this world that she has built and I really hope for more books about this group because I always want to know more about what happens. However I do like the diversity of her writing and I like the fact that she doesn’t keep writing essentially the same book over just with a different couple as the focus. It’s so hard to know what to wish for. Whatever she comes up with next I will be an enthusiastic reader as I am perfectly willing to gobble up anything she writes. If you have not encountered Ms. Burke’s books and you like mm romance then I can’t recommend them highly enough to you. Dive in and enjoy.

Rotic and Ogun's Story . . .

** 3.5 Stars **
This was an interesting story where we learn a great deal about the Orc culture and what they value. Human Rotic lived as a slave and was rescued and adopted by High Orc Chieftain Vizri. Being Vizri’s adopted son, Rotic has become a powerful warrior and leader of the Orc Army. He is gifted with a male consort by the dark elves, likely meant as an insult, but he is confident in himself and his abilities so it doesn’t bother him.

Ogun is a broken slave delivered as tribute. He is named as Rotic’s Consort and a strong relationship began to build, giving him hope. But nothing ever goes smoothly. Can they rise above the issues with the treacherous humans, magical and cultural landmines, and a surprise new wife added to their relationship? Is their love strong enough to deal with all of this?

[The Publisher notes that this book was published previously by another house -- I think this Goodreads version is the older one -- and it has been extensively edited for re-release, so you may find a slightly different version on other sites. Amazon has the newer release.]

I really enjoyed this story- beyond my liking of the characters, but of the world itself. Great world building in this book. The Orc systems, culture, and traditions are very different from human ones. They are hard and unforgiving, but at times fair and I was fascinated seeing where it could go. I was also struck between the differences between one culture which could keep someone as the very bottom of worth, at the lowest point and used as a whore, while another can elevate that same person just based on their characteristics and temperament. It's just a different way of life- one that the hero of this book Rotic adapted to and thrived in when rescued and adopted by Orc Chieftain Vizri. While he may be human in body, he has the mind of an orc. When he is gifted a hybrid consort who was considered the lowest before traded away, the similarities in their initial upbringing are easy to see. I liked the dynamic between them. I would love to read more books from this world should this turn into a series. 5 stars.

Don’t fight the mothers, because you won’t win!

Oh, man. I loved this book. For once, the Orcs are an honourable race, honest and to the point, full of integrity. I can’t say how long I’ve wanted a story like this, and Ms. Burke delivered fully.

It is hot and saucy, with the scenes between Ogun full of love and laughter, plus plenty of misunderstandings about how the world goes around. I loved that it was the humans and the Elves – okay, Dark Elves, but you get where I’m coming from – that were the ones causing trouble.

As for the mothers, well. That was love, pure and simple. They loved Rotic and only wanted the best for him. Luckily, that included Ogun. I am hoping to return to this so I can see how they treated his ‘wife’, plus how Meti got on with his consort and wife too.

A brilliant story that was over too soon for my liking. Absolutely recommended by me.

This was a tough world to live in. The author did a really good job of creating the world within which these characters exist and she did a nice job of introducing the orc as a protagonist. We learn about orc culture as Rotic, a hybrid human character that is gifted to the orc high chief gets to know where he now lives. There are battles and there is a love story between Rotic and Ogun. As the story pulls you in it made me hope that this will not be a standalone but is the precursor for more stories about this place and these characters.

I loved The Difference Between by Stephanie Burke. From the first word to the last, I was hooked. I loved the world the author made and all of the supporting characters, especially all of Rotic's mothers. I also loved all of the action and battles, in addition to all of the hot scenes between Rotic and Ogun. I'm hoping there will be another book that follows this one as I would love to see how everything works out now that Rotic has picked his first wife since you have a male consort and multiple wives in the orc world.

Engaging book with detailed world-building for the Orc Nation and it's customs and culture. I liked seeing the orcs elevated to a more noble position vis-a-vis the humans and dark elves. It was interesting to watch Rotic and Ogun adjust to each other and to the changes occurring around them. I would love to see another book focused on these two.

A good fantasy-M/M romance novel with an interesting plot, good world building and unusual characters. Additionally, there is the the possibility of it being the start of a series. The possibility occurred to me as I feel the novel is not quite complete - the bulk of the story was concluded but there were a few threads left hanging. It also needs to be said that while this is a M/M romance, there is a definite leaning towards it becoming a MMF novel by the end, although the novel finishes before it can actually do so.
