This was the book handed to me when I interviewed for a job at a bookstore in DC. The manager said my reaction to the book would decide whether I got the job. He was weird, but I got the job and loved the book.

One of my all time favorite novels, I sometimes drive through parts of Cumberland County and wonder if Billy Riley ever truly shook the sand from his shoes and got the Cape Fear water out of his blood.

It took me a long time to finally actually read this book, it’s not what I typically read but once I started I really enjoy it. I wish there had been a sequel because I would have liked to know how Billy Riley’s life turned out.

As a native of Cumberland County, NC, this book so accurately describes that sandy place in the world that others need not try.
