Nolēmu palasīt, kas noticis tālāk Nastjas Kamenskas dzīvē pēc atvaļināšanās no dienesta. Viņa nolemj strādāt pie paziņas detektīvaģentūrā un uzņemas risināt pirmo lietu kā civilpersona. Šķiet, ka Mariņina aizvien vairāk iegrimst problēmās, kas ir ārpus detektīvlīnijas; šajā romānā uzstājīgi atkārtojas Kamenskas trauksme par novecošanu, kas tā īsti viņu agrāk nebija uztraukusi. Detektīvs bija izveidots sakarīgs, vienīgi varēja mazāk par tām sievietes metamorfozēm.

The now former Colonel Kamenskaya is officially retired. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she starts working for her former colleague as a PI. She is hired to investigate murders at a House for the Elderly by the millionaire who own it. 2 murders, both connected to the legend of an old noble house and women dying from a broken heart. The marks on the murders are the same, it's the same modus operandi and there are corrupt officials who are trying to take away the land from the House for the Elderly. Yet Kamenskaya isn't sure it's a maniac operating inside a small town.
A lot of Marinina's later books are laden with a great deal of philosophy and moralising. This book is the 4th last in the long series so the moralising is kept to a minimum. Instead we're treated to difficulties the always busy brilliant Colonel faced when she retired. It's through her fears I begin to understand what retirement means to many people. It's almost like your identity is discarded and you're no longer needed, yet you didn't change because your age has higher digits.
Kamenskaya has retired early, the retirement for policemen in Russia is earlier than most workers, so at 49 she doesn't feel like she can hang up her towel just yet. She still goes through the grief of the abrupt change of no longer being allowed to do what she loves. The one thing about the heroine is that despite her dislike of change, she is willing to do so, if not for herself, but for her husband. She is not afraid to admit that her priorities have changed and she must adapt.
The novel also addresses first impressions, the two detectives working the case where one is so much more personable and honest than the other, yet through the novel the impressions are deconstructed and the author almost throws a point in the reader's direction. You don't have to like someone for them to be good at what they do.
All in all, a solid book from a famed Russian detective writer and one where the solving of the murder is still a priority, unlike her later books.

Интересный сюжет, но мы снова видим повторение твистов. Снова сюжет с собакой. Снова сюжет с новой прической. И Каменская забывает будто, что уже был в ее жизни Парень, и что уже отстригали ей волосы. В следующей книге жду Короткова на диване.

Anastazja Kamieńska nudzi się na emeryturze. Próbuje być przykładną żoną i gospodynią, czym prawie wpędza Czistiakowa w ciężką depresję. Ostatecznie dostaje angaż w firmie detektywistycznej swojego znajomego i wreszcie ma zajęcie podobne do zadań wypełnianych w milicji.

Coraz bardziej nie po drodze mi z autorką, zawsze trochę kwękoliłam, ale doceniałam fabułę kryminalną, robiłam jednak coraz dłuższe odstępy między tomami. Ten zaczęłam czytać bo jako jedyny miałam pobrany ebook, dostępny bez sieci wifi. Tym razem naprawdę autorka mnie zmęczyła domorosłym filozofowaniem, kartkowałam do końca właściwie by się dowiedzieć czy wzięła do domu Kumpelę. Albo to był ostatni mój przeczytany tom, albo muszę zrobić sobie dłuuugą kwarantannę od autorki.
