Override: Discover Your Brain Type, Why You Do What You Do, and How to Do It Better

Rate this book
Think you already own your brain? Think again. Your brain owns you. It pushes you around and insists upon getting its way, not yours. Rather than having your best interests in mind, your brain has its own very specific agendas and strategies the purpose of which is singular--to make it feel good. It doesn't care that its goals are often at stark variance with your intentions or what you know is healthy and constructive in your life. Your brain is selfish, demanding, and devious. But it doesn't have to be this way. Override introduces a new two-pronged theory of serotonin types and dopamine types. Based on today's breakthrough science into neurotransmitters--the chemicals that transmit signals through our nervous system-- Override shows listeners how to recognize their own chemical imbalances, and what to do about them. One of the key parts of developing these strategies is understanding the ways serotonin and dopamine are supposed to work, and which type you fall under. Equipped with this new information, the listener will learn to recognize and reshape their reflexive behavior and develop intentional self-control. With this book, nobody is doomed to remain trapped by their natural tendencies!

I found this book to be interesting and helpful. Although classification of brain types as “swords” or “shields” is similar to other familiar classifications - pessimistic/optimistic, type A/type B personality…; the scientific backup of different brain chemistries and details in the first few chapters really grabbed my attention. After the initial presentation of the brain types, we are then walked through how to use this information to inform the different areas of our lives. It’s easy to skip around and refer back to specific chapters. As I was reading, I found myself thinking about people in my life and recognizing their sword or shield tendencies. I found the chapters on eating and exercise the most helpful and felt like the authors may have been listening in on conversations that I have with myself as I’ve tried to establish a new exercise routine! It was crazy how spot on they were when describing things a “sword” (me) might say and do! Highly recommend this book.

This was difficult because I fell equally between both brain types. For me personally, this was frustrating and felt very conflicting. Maybe others are more one or the other brain type and can better use this book to help them.

Thought provoking.

An interesting and informative read although in places, "a little above my pay grade", and, for me, a bit heavy going. Thought provoking nonetheless!

Why (Not) to read this book (Target Audience)
Interesting take on our subconscious mind. Where the book explores the imbalance that occurred in the brain's evolution. An imbalance in how we handle "threatening" situations.

How this book changed my daily live (Takeaways)
Did evolution imbalance our biological response in the unconscious search for comfort?

Arousal: stimulation off nervous system

Stress is imbalance in cortisol

Sword - You, outward, too little, seek cortical arousal - Sympathetic system - excitor - dopamine - seek reward - impulse seekers

Shield - I, Inward, too much, avoid cortical arousal - Parasympathetic system - calming - serotonine - harm avoidance - impulse avoiders
