Vicki was a borderline alcoholic bartender who was only babysitting two little kids when the zombie apocalypse hit. She knew nothing about zombies and even less about caring for kids.
Zombies used to be something of science fiction horror, but they now control the world. Vicki does what she's done all her young life, keeps herself alive. Soon, she realizes she's one of the few left, but being alone isn't anything new for her.
When her neighbor pounds on her door and leaves her kids, Vicki realizes that the nightmare of the apocalypse had just started for her. As supplies dwindle and the dead start to fill the halls, she knows her apartment is no longer a safe place. And despite her hopes, the mother was never returning for her children and now she had to do what she could to keep them alive.
Leaving the apartment, the only plan Vicki has is to try for a safezone she heard about during the last live news report on her television. However, hiding from zombies isn't as easy as she thought, with a crying baby strapped to her a back and a five-year-old in tow.
Will Vicki be able to overcome the challenges she faces and get her young charges to somewhere safe? Or will they fall to feed the undead?
A tense prequel to the upcoming Babysitter of the Apocalypse series, that's full of dangers including zombies and not knowing how to deal with an opinionated five-year old. This is the second series written by best selling post-apocalypse author Courtney Konstantin. Don't miss the start of Vicki's survival adventure by one-clicking today!
As a child, Courtney always had aspirations of being a writer. She participated in journalism in school. At home, she wrote short stories, poetry and filled diary pages. Somewhere along the line becoming an adult took priority over her writing and she went to work in business operations.
Now as a mother to three beautiful children, she tells them all the time to follow their dreams, be whatever they want. Those lessons reminded her how much she loved writing. She finally opened the door to making writing a real priority in her life.
Living outside of Portland, Oregon she loves the green and beauty Oregon offers. When she’s not matching wits with her children, her crazy Siberian Husky or her bi-polar cats, she enjoys binge reading, hikes and touring wineries. Courtney and her husband, the love of her life, enjoy traveling the world whenever they can get a free moment. And cruises….she loves cruising. She’s especially fond of life, laughter and sarcasm – and she’s excited to share all of that and more with her readers!
I am already a big fan of this author and this prequel to a new series definitely did NOT disappoint. I really enjoyed the main character and the action was non-stop. I found myself amused more often than not at the main character’s thoughts and cannot wait for the next episode in this series.
This was a whole new twist on zombie apocalypse stories for me. For a mostly functioning alcoholic to be thrust into the role of babysitter/caregiver by a neighbor, she does not know was unthinkable. What kind of mother would leave her two & five year old with a stranger to go look for her sister during a zombie virus outbreak. It's true that people really do the unthinkable in these end of world situations.
Vickie, for all her problems, really steps up & does everything she can for these two kids. Their mother never returned & after over a month, they were forced to leave the apartment for supplies & the hope of a safe zone in Canada. This may be a short story, but it was packed with scary, dangerous stuff & not just of the zombie variety. I enjoyed it very much & will look for more of this authors books.
This post-apocalyptic story was unique; the heroine had serious flaws and was definitely not prepared. So the storyline definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. It was the writing that was terrible. The worst part was the constant changing of tenses, from present to past even in the middle of sentences. There were also way too many unnecessary commas also. At least once, an incorrect word was used (she “extracted” herself from them, not “extradited”). But, I will continue to read the series, as I’m intrigued…although, the safe zone in Canada certainly reminded me of Alexandria in The Walking Dead. Not a bad thing; it made it easier for me to picture. I really hope Vickie figures out, soon, that she needs to take better care of herself so that she CAN keep the kids alive!
If this book hadn't been so short, I would have DNFed it. Though it's not marked as a novella, it only took me an hour or so to read.
Set during a zombie apocalypse (yawn), due to the most unbelievable of reasons, a nearly alcoholic bartender ended up with a stranger's kids (a 5 years old and a 2 year old girl).
Even though I have less than zero interest in zombie apocalypse stories anymore, I think I picked this one up because the idea of dealing with it while trying to protect kids was at least a somewhat new idea. Too bad the writer's skill just wasn't up to the task of making this a good story.
This is a unique look at a zombie apocalypse due to the MFC suddenly becoming the caregiver for two young children. Even though they are in danger and then a dire situation I found the author’s wit amusing at times. It’s a prequel, so it’s short, and it needs a proofreader but I still intend to read book 1 of this series.
Disclaimer: I received this ebook from BookFunnel and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Hmm dump your kids on the local barmaid heavy drinker to go search for your sister. Through zombie filled streets. I guess those helpless children weren't worth much to their mom. Good thing that barmaid has a heart bigger than she realises. Terror and danger on every page. You won't want to put it down. I didn't!
When the neighbor leaves to find her sister, I kid agrees to watch her kiddos. The world is in a zombie apocalypse, good read of the flight to safety. Her goal is to keep kids safe, fed, cared for. There is humor throughout story, the 5 yo ‘adult’ who is opinionated little girl. Love this prequel.
Quirky, funny, action filled with a lot of heart.,
This book was totally not what I expected. The main protagonist, Vicky, tells the tale in a quirky, quick and sarcastic manner that brought a smile to my face if not a full laugh. Lots of zombies of course. But how do you take care of two kids who were thrust upon you on a temporary but permanent way? Read on to find out.
This book was not what I expected. After reading the description, I thought it would be more humorous than thrilling. There is plenty of humor in this book, but the story unravels the forming of a bond and trust between the main character and the kids she cares for. It was an enjoyable read.
This is a good short story. I got very wrapped up in the story line and really wish it was longer, hopefully there will be more to it and picks up right where this book ended.
Enjoyed the character, but this isn't really a book, just a short story and one that needs better editing. Some typos, but mostly because the author weirdly mixed verb tenses.
Loved this prequel novella! And excited to read the actual book! Was a good zombie book for a gal who loves all zombie things! It’s hard to find a good zombie book that pulls you in and I hope the book is just as good!
I have a question... " In the several days she was traveling with an Infant, she didn't once Change a diaper!! How'd she manage that??? I won't be buying the follow up story. The story was just not realistic.
I like Courtney Konstantin's Sundown series, so I was pretty sure I would enjoy book 1 of Babysitter for the apocalypse. I am looking forward to the next book.
I couldn't get into it due to the constant tense changes, I dnfed at 12%. It seems like a good story start though. It's worth checking out if you can overlook the lack of editing.
