I would call it a YA novel. Although it is not a genre that I read anymore, since it is written by a great writer of the 1930s Generation, a classic book from a different era, I read and enjoyed it.
Of course this book does not necessarily have the YA label.
I read Venezis back in school. Last year I read Μ. Karagatsis for the first time and this year it was Myrivilis.
So I said before reading "The Novel of the Four" written by the three aforementioned authors along with Terzakis, I decided to read something of his own first, to get acquainted with his writing.
So in early June at the used-books bookstore in Limassol, Cyprus I found this book (along with others of course).
There's no ISBN or edition details but I guess it's from the 50's since the handwritten dedication on the first page is dated 26/11/56. So this book has both literary and value as an object.
When I started reading this book, I was carried away by Terzakis' lyrical writing and the atmosphere of nostalgia that it brings out. Simultaneously mixed with a melancholy and an existential twilight.
The protagonist is Glafkos a teenager of 14-16 years old, who came to the countryside with his aunt for the summer holidays and because he has a weak health.
He is acquainted with the plains, the nature, the the celestial bodies, and three other teenagers around his age, one of whom will fall in love for.
There is also his unnamed Friend with whom he corresponds while he is on the farm in the countryside.
I do not know how real or imaginary this Friend was.
It feels that this friend was the more mature version of our protagonist from the future.
But I might be wrong.
The sure thing is that I enjoyed this small novel and I'm looking forward for more by this author.
