This was a pretty good book, but it could have been GREAT except for a terrible error in judgement on the part of the author.

Throughout the book, the hands and strategies referred to are using the 2010 American Mah Jongg league card. However, the card included in the book is the 2009 card - which has entirely different hands.

This card is only used for one small portion - a quiz at the end. This could have easily been done using the 2010 card, if such was included. Or she could have referenced the 2009 card throughout. As it was, it was terribly awkward to follow along throughout the book without the correct card as a visual reference.

Fortunately I have a friend who was playing mah jongg in 2010, and she loaned her card to me. I will give this book another read through using that card and I expect to get more out of it as a result.

Even without the card though, I did learn a lot of strategy tips that are very helpful for a beginning player like me.

Also, the correct title for this book - Winning American Mah Jongg Strategies: A Guide for the Novice Player - doesn't show up when you search goodreads. I had to put it in by ISBN.

This is a very good book to help beginners improve their game. I read the first part of it, and then put it down for several months to give myself a chance to use the new strategies I had learned. After a few months I read the rest of the book. It has helped me a lot.

I do agree with Laura Cushing's review in that at least she could have used a "sample" card and included it with the book, instead of referencing one card, and then including another. That made NO sense. That's why I only gave it 4 stars.
