She’s got a gypsy spirit too, and she’s not keen to stay in the small town where she grew up, but her heart is in no condition to be broken again.
Will Tony and Cat be able to work past the obstacles keeping them apart to find their off-beat brand of happily-ever-after?
This is a sweet/clean contemporary beach romance in the vein of your favorite Hallmark movie by USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson.

3-time USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson writes adult contemporary beach romance. She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! Unless it's a sweet-and-sexy cowboy - read those under her pen name of Liz Isaacson. Or an emotional, heartfelt women's fiction novel - read those under her pen name of Jessie Newton.
The Day He Left Town by Elana Johnson is the first book in the Hawthorne Harbor series. Anthony “Tony” Herrin is the youngest of the Harrin brothers and followed the family tradition into public service. He never expected to live in Hawthorne Harbor and eagerly awaits news of a job with the Forest Service. Catherine “Cat” Magleby didn’t want to be back in her hometown but after a humiliating break-up, she had no choice. She also definitely didn’t want to run into her ex-boyfriend. Despite their mutual love of the outdoors, Tony and Cat seem to be on different paths while still being drawn to each other. Can they find a second chance at a happily ever after? I like Elana Johnson’s clean second chance romances. They are fun, inspiring and a great weekend read. Unfortunately, The Day He Left Town didn’t have the same feel. It was a short read, almost too short. I felt as if I didn’t have time to get invested in Tony and Cat’s relationship. I didn’t care for Tony and Cat as individuals, at first. By the end, I enjoyed seeing them together. I was interested in the side characters which will probably be featured in future books. Overall, Tony and Cat’s story was enjoyable and I am interested in reading the rest of the series. I recommend The Day He Left Town.
The Day He Left Town is available in paperback and eBook
I read this book as part of my research in clean romances. Based on the author's credentials and reviews of the book, I had high hopes.
Those hopes were dashed by the end of page one.
Perhaps my expectations for good writing are inappropriate for modern romance novels, particularly clean romances, as I am not well-read in these areas, but I will honestly say that this book, along with the other clean romances I have recently read, make me believe that the reason why romance novels have such a poor reputation in the broader field of fiction is that they are so poorly written."
For this book specifically, I could not get into the story. I did not like the characters. I did not care about them. I found their chemistry unconvincing. I was constantly told how they felt rather than shown, having their backstories shoved in my face in a truncated fashion to try to produce "mystery", descriptions felt like almost blow-by-blow deary-diary entries of things that happened rather than scene and event building. Honestly, more was done to describe the main dude whistling to his dog Alfie than the build-up of chemistry between the main characters. The sentences were poorly constructed as well, making it hard to get into the book because it was jarring. The pacing was... ugh. For example, on their first date a fair amount of page time was spent describing their car trip to the restaurant as they reconnected, then suddenly "dinner is over". Erm what??? Did I miss them arriving and eating at the restaurant? Maybe I did. I skimmed a lot.
Like another clean romance I read, it felt like the author smashed out a first draft of the novel to make sure all of the plot was down, went through and spell-checked it, then got it published, rather than going back and fleshing it out.
Right now I feel very jaded about clean romances. I don't know if there is a need for decent writing in this area, or if readers genuinely want to read half-baked, uninteresting garbage. If you read this review and have recommendations for well written clean romances, please send them my way.
"Tony amava le cose dinamiche che non sembravano così pericolose come in realtà erano, come il fuoco. Come l'acqua. Come l'amore."
This is book one in the Hawthorne Harbor Roamnce Series.
Okay, I liked this story. It was a cute story, even sweet of a second chance between Cat and Tony. It's a short easy clean romance. For the story itself, I'd gone it 4 stars.
What I didn't like was how this story was formatted! This book is about 175 pages long. The first 112 pages are about Tony and Cat. That makes it a quick story and, to me, there's pieces missing from their story . And that's annoying!
But the rest of the book has a "bonus" section. Now while I love bonuses, this was done in such a way that I found it frustrating. This bonus consists of 5 chapter of the events around Tony and Cats wedding.
Having the characters' wedding at the end is awesome! I always like to see a finish like that in a story. What I didn't like was how little of those chapters were about Tony and Cat.
Instead they were about Tony's brothers. Now I understand that story loops are an author's advanced storytelling tool, I get that but when I read entire, long chapters about another character and not the main one I want to be reading about, especially when i have sooooo many unanswered questions, i get annoyed.
Okay, I know these chapters are great lead ins for the upcoming books, but to me they detracted from Tony's and Cat's story because, in this case, they took too long.
And because of that I would only give this a 2 star rating. To average it out, it'll be 3 stars.
Romance trope: second chance Series: Hawthorne Harbor Length: 175 pages
Plot: Tony is finally making a move that will help fulfill a dream. He's applied for a job with the Forest Service. But now the girl that got away is back in town and he and Cat might have a second chance at their young love. What will happen when he moves away this time?
Commentary: What a couple of weirdos! In a good way? Usually, it's "she's not like other girls" (and that's an annoying trope), but they're each that (he's not like the other boys, obviously - we're definitely hit over the head with that throughout the whole book). I guess there couldn't be anyone else for each of them because this is a case of nobody else understanding them. The thing with the shorts! Her randomly wanting to be a nurse for the Forest Service (who even knew that was a thing!). Both of them unable to settle down - wanderlust galore! It was such a strange romance at first - he almost seemed to have an attitude of "yeah, good enough." By the end I believed they loved each other, but it was close for a while. At any rate, I hope the police chief brother gets the woman with the kid that he was helping - I wanted to see that more than anything. And I don't intend this meanly (although they are just fictional people (even if the author is not)) - I just found the couple to be so strange. I couldn't tell what was more important to them - each other or joining the Forest Service.
Clumsy writing, with weird changes in character focus. Why so many details about side characters? I felt like I’d turned the wrong page of a choose your own adventure story.
Unnecessary details and descriptions which made for clunky reading.
Really poor, incomplete editing to the point where a sentence isn’t finished before a new (unrelated) paragraph starts. Lots of obvious issues.
Unlikable characters that I felt I didn’t get to know.
Appalled by a character making phone calls as she drives (reaching for her phone, tapping out the number) And the behaviour of some of the characters is just horrid (those parents needed to put their daughter ahead of a family rift) and jokes about somebody in a wheelchair.
A second chance romance that's the beginning of a series. The book is set in the west with family, friends and first loves. Life gets in the way and Tony and Cat break up and go their separate ways. Ten years have passed and there seems to be chemistry when their paths unexpectedly cross again.
There is a good flow to the story and lots of scenic descriptions. There's some turmoil and angst but will love win out? There's a happily ever after in the offing along with closure. I liked that there's an excerpt for the next book in the series and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of her books and not just those in this series.
The story about Tony and Cat was very sweet. They were sweethearts when they were young and Tony’s job took him away. Cat went on her own adventures and now years later find herself back in Hawthorne Harbor. Tony has been back in Hawthorne Harbor working as a firefighter but applying for jobs on the other side of the country. But Cat and Tony accidently run into each other and they start to reconnect. Except now they are both offered jobs that are over hundreds away from each other. What will they do? Are they really ready to admit that they love each other or will they go their own ways again? You will have to read to find out. It was a good story.
Do you like second chance romances? Cat and Tony were high school sweethearts. After graduation, they went their separate ways. Now, seven years later, they find themselves back in their hometown and the attraction is stronger than ever. Both are making career changes but neither job is in the same town and are in separate states. Will their relationship survive or will they go their separate ways yet again?
I thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of this couple. They were back in their home town after many years where they had gone seperate ways. When they meet again sparks fly. They are kindred spirits and ready for whatever challenges come their way.
He left town -- does he want to go back? He left town for a job . . . and then he moved home. And found his old girlfriend on a hike. Something they love to do together!!! But then he gets a new job - and she gets a new job - both in different towns. Now what? This is a superb book of what can happen if you really want it!!
Tony has decided decided to change jobs and is planning on leaving town. He meets a former girl friend who is visiting their home town. She is also looking for a job somewhere else. What will win out, jobs or love? A cute story about two restless souls who finally decide what will make them happy.
Terrible audio: Matt, Digital voice. Ugh! This review is due to the audio, not the book. The digital voice narration is horrible on this book. It truly ruined the experience for me. Flat and monotone with no clear breaks in the narration, making a very choppy experience. I will be watching out for digital narration books in the future. To be sure that I don't waste my time or money on them. I can only assume the digital voice was used to cut corners and save money. This is a disservice to the author's time and talent.
I liked it alright. The narrator was so blah. I wanted to know more details of the characters. I am however going to be reading the next book in this series and hoping for a different narrator 🙂 I like that Eliana Johnson doesn’t go into explicit love scenes so it is a clean romance 💘 I would give it a four if…it had a better narrator and there were more details of the characters.
I always enjoy this author's books. She has a way of drawing me into a story that makes me feel like I know the characters and could be their friend. I loved Tony and Cat's story. A really great read that I read straight through.
He’s ready to move on when the woman that got away 10 years before comes home. They start dating and it’s good. Then he gets his forestry job and she gets offered a job not close by. What will they decide, split up, follow each other but which place?
I really enjoyed this second chance romance between Tony and Cat. The way the author wrote the story made you feel like you were there. I definitely recommend reading this book.
I received a free book, and this is my honest opinion.
'The Day He Left Town' was such a sweet tale. The plot was filled with a second chance at love and a monumental decision. Cat and Tony, the protagonists, worked very hard to achieve their HEA and oozed chemistry. I liked the vividness the author created. Overall, I liked the charming narrative.
A very good story about two families. Cat and Tony were high school sweethearts from a small town in Washington. Many years have passed since they graduated and followed different paths. Both have returned home and met unexpectedly while hiking a favorite trail.
I chose this book because it sounded like an easy read. I like books that are romantic. I was capable of reading in no time. I would recommend it as a night read. It is relaxing. There is no swearing nor sexual content.
This is the story of two young people who broke up to go their separate ways with the careers they had chosen only to end up back home in their hometown and getting married. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
This was a nice second time around contemporary romance. They were a couple many years ago and now were both back in town. Their first new date they both knew this wad real. A nice read.
This is such a sweet story of Cat and Tony, who are looking for their second chance and realize that they are right for each other, and both willing to sacrifice to help each other, but luckily it works out for them both and they are able to find their HEA! I loved reading this great story.
Tony and Cat go way back. Cat broke up with him and continued on with her life. Years went by , but things didn't work out for Cat like she thought. She returned to her home town and met up with Tony. Can they make a relationship work this time?
