Wataru Yoshizumi (吉住渉) is a Japanese mangaka. She was born as Mari Nakai (中井 真里, Nakai Mari) on June 18, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan. She graduated with a degree in economics from Hitotsubashi University.
Yoshizumi started her career as a mangaka while working as an office lady. Her debut manga was a yomikiri (short story) called "Radical Romance" that was published in 1984, in the summer issue of Ribon Original. She is known as a social mangaka, and is a good friend of fellow mangakas Naoko Takeuchi, Ai Yazawa, Miho Obana, and Megumi Mizusawa.
Yoshizumi currently (as of 2007) has her works published in both Ribon and Chorus.
P x P was my first read and purchased work by Yoshizumi Wataru. And I'm glad that I gave her other series a try afterwards as this particular work did not exactly blow my mind. Don't get me wrong - it's ok. There's not much worth mentioning but there's also nothing gravely wrong with it. The volume includes the title story P x P along with another short story Baby, It's You - of which the latter is definitely my preferred story!
P x P follows high school student Ruri who has made a hobby of becoming the school's thief for hire. Of course, her identity is kept a secret and the mysterious thief 'P' soon becomes a school legend. Ruri is a cute character but not very remarkable. I mean, the story is just way too short to go anywhere. There doesn't seem to be much of a plot beside Ruri stealing a couple of items for classmates. I can only assume that the author might have had more ideas and cut it short.
Just looking at the title - Ruri's thief alias 'P' stems from her nickname 'Princess'. And because her friend's nickname is 'Professor', some make the assumption that he is 'P'. There was some minor romance between the two which is why I assume 'P x P' stands for 'Princess x Professor', which then again leads me to believe that the author really did have more ideas. The romance between the two was such a minor part of the plot that I find it strange that the title would even be related. Then again, my title theory could be wrong altogether.
Baby, It's You isn't even half as long but delivers a much more solid plot. Kumi is tall and popular and has been asked to perform in a Takarazuka, a play that is performed solely by female actors, as the lead male character. Kumi is not all that thrilled but agrees to do it anyway. To her dismay, her maths teacher, whom she has feelings for, promises to come and see the performance.
It's a cute and your not-so-untypical story of a girl who has feelings for her teacher. The Takarazuka was a nice and interesting bit to read about - too bad it was more of a background element. I also preferred the art of this story - for some reason, P x P's art was different from Yoshizumi's other works...
As long as you don't expect anything mind blowing, this manga is a fine read for in between.
This was a cute, but ultimately forgettable story about a high school girl who steals worthless things for people (things that have some worth to them, but are not valuable). I like some of the author's other works, but this wasn't her best.
While the art is not particularly bad, just like every regular shojo manga, the story is poor and most characters are too cliche. The main idea (having a burglar high school girl stealing certain objects in order to solve other highschooler's problems, while she's secretly in love with the teacher who helps her) lacks a proper introduction and it just shows several stories that end abruptly.
This particular manga shows that Wataru Yoshizumi is an author more suited to long stories rather than short ones.
i really liked the last story (excluding the weird student-teacher relationship) and i wish it had its own proper volume. i wasn't expecting that plot twist at all and it left me wondering if something would happen with hikari :')
