Vincent came to the countryside to buy an estate and convert it into a hotel. He met Kate, who had been living there for almost 20 years. They had ONS, then two days passed. The earl of the estate told the people living and working there that Vincent bought it. Kate was blindsided by this news. She got mad, but only for like 2 days, and then she accepted it eventually.
I struggled with the pacing, characters, and dialogue in the story. I think the plot was great, but the execution was lacking. I was done with the first half, yet I still couldn't connect with the MCs. There's no buildup or sexual tension between them; even their ONS was meh. It's... underwhelming to say the least. 😐
Kate, I think she has an agoraphobia; she's scared of stepping away from their town because of her childhood experiences. Her mom believes she's a gypsy, and she used to travel a lot, bringing Kate along with her. This didn't build stability in her life, and she missed a lot in her childhood, like going to school and making friends. This also developed her fear of traveling or going away. But her grandma adopted her and gave her stability in that small town. So she developed the idea that staying there was the only thing she would ever need. When she goes to a place even an hour away from their town, she gets panic attacks all the time.
Then there's Vincent. People say he's a commitmentphobe, but that's not really true. He's the most committed person I've ever read, with his goals, company, people, and family. The issue with him is that he's afraid to be abandoned. When he was young, his father left him and his mom. So he vowed not to get attached to anything or anyone, so when they're taken away or they decide to leave, he won't be hurt. He never stayed too long in a place because he didn't want to put down roots, and I don't think he stayed long in a relationship. Not giving a manhoe vibe, but I think all his previous relationships are surface-level.
If you look at Vincent and Kate, they don't seem to work. He's always traveling, while she hates leaving their small town. Yet when they got into the FWB, they started to question things and their ideals, or if they could be flexible about them.
Then, when it became too much, feelings and emotions were already included, Vincent left all of a sudden because he got scared. They were separated for a few weeks.
Then the hotel sent the managers to London for training, and this was a struggle for Kate, but she made it. At the same hotel where they're staying, Vincent also made a reservation, wanting to talk to her, and apologized for his abrupt departure.
I'm not sure if I want a grovel from him; I'm still thinking about it. Kate's friend made her realize that maybe one of the reasons Vincent left was because she never gave him a reason to stay. She didn't assure him that she'd never leave him like his father did. While on Vincent's side, his cousins made him think that he should've made a compromise to make it work with Kate, but instead he up and left when the tough got going.
When they finally saw each other again after their separation, they both decided to apologize to one another, and they had the same idea to propose. Obviously, they got back together and got married that same day, I think. All this happened in the last chapter before the epilogue.
Overall, this didn't work for me. I don't know what it is, but I just didn't connect with the MCs. Maybe this will resonate with other readers.
