The Winds of Fortune #1

The Gods of Chaos and Chance

Rate this book
Most people in Aleksey Rider-Mikkelsen’s life would probably assert that at fifty honest living and sobriety were long overdue. But recovering in bed from the lingering after-effects of his leg injury, bored, in pain, and feeling entirely irrelevant, Aleksey doesn’t much care what Benjamin Rider-Mikkelsen thinks. He doesn’t appreciate the close monitoring either. Fortunately for Aleksey, therefore, the devil reliably makes mischief for idle hands with too much money. No one said he wasn’t allowed to buy an island, did they? Of course, he’s not planning to do anything nefarious in his new kingdom, but equally, Aleksey doesn’t expect such a thoughtless purchase to plunge them both into a nightmare of old allegiances that puts all his new promises to Ben to the ultimate test.

4.25 stars from me for this totally unexpected [colour me gobsmacked 😵] but nevertheless very welcome addition to the Nik/Aleksey and Ben stories. There were laughs aplenty, and our two MC's seem to be as much in love as ever 😍.

A few typos crept in I have to admit, and the little foreword at the start of the book which is attributed to 'Anon' is in fact by Max Ehrmann [1927] and was used in a song/spoken monologue thing by Les Crane back in 1971 named 'Desiderata'...which even *I* can remember and should've been easy enough for an eagle-eyed editor to follow up on [Google anyone 🤔]. The main setting of the story, on the archipelago of the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall was delightful, and threaded throughout was a little mystery involving Phillipa, Nik/Aleksey's ex wife, the 'Firm' and connections to ...you know what? Discover for yourselves, and while you're at it, uncover some of Aleksey's thoughts on the Ukraine war and the seizing of Russian assets. Radulf and PB are well in this one, and all I can say is I'm keeping my eyes on Mr Scar in future stories. The Path Less Travelled comes out next month.

Ok

At this point, I’ve accepted that nothing in this series is ever going to top book one for me, but that doesn’t stop me from devouring every single installment. This series is like a soap opera; pure chaos, endless disasters, and Nik (aka Aleksey) and Ben constantly fighting the odds. And I have to see it through to the end.

Gary Furlong’s narration adds so much to the experience. I genuinely enjoy the books more when I listen as I read along, his delivery just works for this series.

As expected, the banter is still sharp and entertaining, and the wild plot twists? Absolutely loved them. Seeing Nik and Ben continue to grow as a couple, now 15 years into their relationship, was one of the best parts. But man, Ben’s habit of scheming behind Nik’s back with Tim and Squeezy instead of having an actual conversation? So frustrating. If he has concerns, why not just talk to Nik instead of making these passive-aggressive side comments? It’s a pattern that’s always annoyed me, and it definitely stood out here.

That said, it’s still a solid 4-star read. If you’ve made it this far into the series, congrats!
Stay strong.
The finish line is in sight, and we can make it!

Ben Rider-Mikkelsen and Aleksey Rider-Mikkelsen keep me entertained.

John Wiltshire’s writing is magnificent add the voice of Gary Furlong you get a 10-star book and audiobook.

How John Wiltshire devises and presents these books is rather unbelievable, there are plots within plots, a history that is making the reader wonder!
Secrets now coming out!

I love their banter, Aleksey can be quite cutting but also so humourous.

Ben, who can give back as much as Aleksey gives.

Molly - adorable.

All the crew is 100% perfect.

I am on cloud nine when listening to and reading these books.

Garry Furlong is perfect. Congratulations John Wiltshire!

Definitely will be recommending this book and audiobook.

It's good. There are a few typos but there's an interesting twist.

I wish there had been a glossary or something, to refresh readers minds as to who the heck all the side characters are!

You might think this story could end and did in the previous series, but there is apparently so much more to be said and done with these characters and in this world. This is a great slice-of-life novel with a little suspense thrown in at the end. It’s not like the first series (at least so far), but it was surprisingly lovely and mostly light and quite heartwarming. Definitely looking forward to more.

Definitely entertaining. I mean, I’m sorry but they are my favorite couple so of course I have to read it. ❤️ Not quite sure why this wouldn’t just be book 10 as you’d never read this as a stand alone series. And if you tried, shame on you.

There were quite a few editing issues and at times I felt some sections could have been cut back.

But it’s Nik/Aleksey and Ben and they are in a place of bliss and so am I. *sigh* ❤️❤️❤️

I'm pretty invested in the characters from reading the previous series. This one was about Alexi buying an island from his ex-wife's family. They wanted a quiet, private sale and made he and Ben sign non-disclosure agreements about anything they were to find on the island. There was a storm and they found pics proving that Hitler hadn't died in 1945 and that the royal family helped hide him (I think.) Then, Ben and Alexi were kidnapped by the head of the International Bank (or something) and he turned out to also be Hitler's son. He wanted the pics and was going to kill them as soon as he got them. They killed him and the 2 men with him (I think.) They had to swim a long way and then hunt and kill their own food and fish for a few weeks until Squeezy came for them. I feel like the author spent a bunch of time on things before the incident, and not much time with them while they were fending for themselves after swimming. Alexi is questioning whether or not he's actually dead and continues to hallucinate. I feel like this series might've been written as one long book, broken into separate books. It's not clear if the whole Hitler danger has passed. I'm hoping the next book will be better.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Narrated by Gary Furlong. *le sigh* I loved this story. It was so good to be back in this world, with not-as-dim-or-gooffy-as-he-seems Ben and not-as-sneaky-as-he-think-he-is Nickolas/Alexei. The plot seems light at first, but it quickly becomes deeper with threads that will come out more in the next books. I adore Gary Fulong’s narration. His voice is delightful with Ben’s English accent, Nikolas/Alexei’s Danish-Russian accent and the other supporting characters. I am looking forward to the next book.

Amazing!

There was never any doubt in my mind that this was going to be fantastic. I have loved these characters for years and really anything they get up to is going to work for me.
This time a new plot for Aleksey and Ben, but with their same crew to join them.
I can’t wait for the next two.

It's so good to revisit Alexei and Ben again. I find these two characters very intriguing, and they do seem to get into the most precarious situations, all while dealing with their insecurities with each other and themselves. This one ended quite satisfactorily,

I was NOT disappointed! Oh this was everything I had hoped for and more! It felt so normal at first, so calm and happy compared to the previous books that I thought this might just be a slice of life book for a change but OH BOY WAS I MISTAKEN! I did not see THAT coming! Everything was perfect! Absolutely perfect!

I would never imagine I could be bored reading ANYTHING related to these Characters. I enjoyed the 'More Heat Than The Sun' series so much! But this spinoff or whatever has so far been a slug fest. I'm at chapter 33 and had to struggle to get here because it's been nothing but Fluff. NOTHING is happening, it's like reading a never ending epilogue. Other reviews imply that there is a twist but trudging through the thousands of examples of perfection and extreme levels of happiness in Ben & Aleksey's lives now is almost painful. I mean, the point was made! THEY'RE HAPPY! Did we really need 33+ chapters to explain that? OR! at the very least can a 1 or 2 actual events be thrown in between the repetitive routine of them waking up, eating, thinking about how happy they are, having sex then going back to bed before doing it all again the next day?..... I just don't know if I'll make it to whatever the twist turns out to be.

This was a whole new experience for me, reading the Novel instead of listening to the audio, (not to mention how distracted I got by JW's creative use of the English language) and I'm not sure I'm ready to rate it until I hear Gary's voice sweep me away into another reality. As always, I enjoyed my time with the boys, but there were a few weak points; mainly the short-lived, mustache-twirling Dr. Evil. I was hoping for more of a build-up for both him and the story's climax. Also, as much as I enjoyed seeing the softer, kinder side of Aleksey, I missed the razor-sharp wit of Nik. Hopefully, we'll see the 2 parts of him come together in the next installment.

One last thought: What became of Scarface?

I listened to the audio as soon as it was available, but put off finishing my review. GF was awesome as always, and I did enjoy the book more than when I read it. I will continue to follow Aleksey and Ben through all of their crazy adventures, but I figured out what's missing for me. #1- The hunger is gone. The boy's relationship has grown over the years, as it should. Their obsession over each other was one of the driving factors in MHTTS, and now it's gone. #2 JW is great at chaos and relationship issues, but not so much with the adventure part of the story. Perhaps collaborating with an action author could help.

Aleksey is a Mastermind, ok?

Me recuerda, a esta canción:

"What if I told you none of it was accidental
And the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me?
I laid the groundwork and then, just like clockwork
The dominoes cascaded in a line
(...)"

And..

"No one wanted to play with me as a little kid
So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since
To make them love me and make it seem effortless
This this the first time I've felt the need to confess
And I swear
I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cause I care"
Mastermind, Taylor Swift.

🥺🥺🥺

"No. There was a silence. Aleksey waited contentedly then continued, amused, ‘Because I would not be giving anything up. You are seeing it all wrong. You are my light, Ben. I have told you this. If I did not have you illuminating it, my life would be nothing but a dark illusion."

Me recuerda a esto:

"One night, a few moons ago
I saw flecks of what could've been lights
But it might just have been you
Passing by unbeknownst to me
Life is emotionally abusive
And time can't stop me quite like you did"

Y esto:

"Ben lay back on the grass, closing his eyes and some of the brilliance of the day went out for Aleksey."

Me recordó a esto:

"This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen
I searched aurora borealis green
I've never seen someone lit from within
Blurring out my periphery"
Snow at the beach. Taylor Swift.

"I wanna set off alarms, deal out the cards
Smoke Cuban cigars, get kicked out of bars before two
But only if it's with you.

Get kind of reckless and have wild, wild, wild sex under the moon
(...)
And I got some baggage, let's do some damage
I am not made for no horse and carriage
You know I'm savage, you're looking past it
I want that late-night sweet magic, that forever-lasting love
But only if it's with you"
-You. Miley Cyrus.

Amo a Aleksey, mi vida mi amor, te extrañé.

I've been hoarding this second series like a miser hoarding gold. There just isnt enough from this author. I hadn't forgotten how brilliant this author is but I had forgotten how funny. I was snort laughing almost from the first page. This series brings together all the many years of utter chaos the previous decade and half has been for these 2 MC's and their den of misfits. Aleksey - aka Nik - and Ben (jamin) have settled, really settled into their lives together. They have hit a new plane of existence together which is perfect for them. They have vowed to stay away from the dangers that once found them everywhere they went, and live a sedate and loving life. Until Aleksey buys an island. They promised no more surprises and no more holidays.... but they trip off to their new Light island for a non-holiday...... and straight into another adventure that threatens death and destruction.
I love this authors work and I as usual, I'm devouring each page. Seriously hope there is another series in the making..... of anything

I absolutely love spending time with Aleksey and Ben. Their love just keeps growing stronger and stronger. They are meant to be together, through thick or thin, for better or worse.

Aleksey is still recovering from the events at the end of the last book, and Ben is worried about him. Ben knows that Aleksey is hiding something and he is, therefore, reluctant to leave Aleksey alone.

The predicament that these two get themselves into is a doozy. Great suspense and action. And, of course, the outcome of the events will go on to shape what they do next.

Once again I listened to the audiobook and Gary Furlong was brilliant.

This is definitely not a standalone.

I had no idea what this series would bring. A spin-off? But these five books are just one epically long Book 10 in the More Heat than the Sun series and I loved this loooong slice of life epilogue.

These books are more from Alekseys POV after we got more of his side of the story in Book 9 and at times I missed some of Bens confusing thoughts and actions :D
Very classic, very fun, very ridiculous, at times maybe a bit too OTT () but would it even be More Heat than the Sun if it wasn't?

Oh man! I don't even know what to say!! Great story. I actually put it down for a few days because it felt so soft and slice of life-like that I was afraid of when the shoe would drop. When it did, I was not ready! I appreciate all the connections and references made to what ended up being the threat at the end. My brain was firing like "Oh this was mentioned briefly previously" and that was fun.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Ben and Alecksy deal with what was introduced in this book.

This first installment of season two was knocked out of the park. Aleksey and Ben should never go on vacation, should never mention the word vacation because they seem to find themselves in trouble and this time around it was a doozy.

I have several favorite couples but Aleksey and Ben are my favorite. I’m only on the first book of season two but I’m gonna hate when this series ends.

Aleksey and the family are back in yet another adventure. They really seem to have the worst luck when it comes to holidays. I’m kinda really confused about the lighthouse and it’s significance. like damn I would’ve just knocked that door down who cares about finding the key. I also wanna know who lit it up. Was the figure really a figment of his imagination or was someone sneaking about on the island??? This took me far longer than I would’ve liked to read but I enjoyed it!

Aleksey & Ben and their entourage never disappoint. John Wiltshire's books are my Comfort Read par excellence. With the recent addition of An Island of Adventures! Anyone growing up in thrall to Enid Blyton knows the appeal. Of course Wiltshire is not a children's writer but we do not outgrow our love for lighthouses and islands or wild lonely moors. I do as an adult fully appreciate the comforts Aleksey's money can provide, as does Ben. Wiltshire's are pretty much the only Romance novels I can read. Can't wait for more.

This was a very promising start to the second series. It was wonderful to see Aleksey & Ben grow as people and as a couple. I dry much enjoyed the story and couldn’t help but laugh when the author had to throw a bit of absurdity in.
