Richard Priddy’s world was one of leisure and affluence. Raised and educated on a prestigious plantation in Virginia, his was a future filled with wealth and promise. But as the fires of rebellion against Great Britain swept throughout the Colonies, this young man of privilege became enamored with ideas of patriotism and liberty. The concept of an independent, free United States captured his imagination.
Against his family’s wishes, and at the tender age of sixteen years, Richard enlisted in the Continental Army in the summer of ‘76. Within a matter of weeks this sheltered, spoiled lad found himself in the throes of deadly combat in the Northeast. He experienced for the first time in his life trials such as sleeplessness, sickness, nakedness, starvation, and death. It was only then that he realized freedom and liberty were not just romantic notions. Rather, they must come at a great cost and with great sacrifice.
Virginians and Continentals is the coming-of-age story of a young American who volunteered to sacrifice everything and endure the unimaginable in order to secure liberty for all Americans.
Geoff Baggett is a small town pastor with a passion for Revolutionary War history. He is an active member of the Sons of the American Revolution and has discovered over twenty Patriot ancestors in his family tree from Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. He is an avid living historian, appearing regularly in period uniform in classrooms, reenactments, and other commemorative events.
Geoff lives on a small piece of land in rural western Kentucky with his amazing wife, a daughter and grandson, and a yard full of perpetually hungry chickens and goats.
Geoff Baggett is an awesome story teller that includes real people and events. I love how he puts it all together in this series. These books have motivated me to learn more about my own family tree. And trying to find a connection to the Revolutionary War.
In Virginians and Continentals, you will dive deep into the characters. Some you want the whole story only about them and others you would like to sock in the nose. The places mentioned in this book are given great detail such as the Somerset Plantation you can picture what it looks like. There awesome moments captured in these pages. You may laugh. and at times despair and a few gave me chill bumps. I hope others enjoy this as much as I did. If your on the fence about reading this book or any in this series, just go ahead and take the plunge, you will not regret it
Richard had two wars. He was at war with his brother George and he was in the Virginian Continental Army in our Revolutionary war. I have read all 7 of this series. It took a bit of time before I guessed who would be the Geoff Baggett ancestor. I have enjoyed each of the books. Several of them take place in the Carolinas so the same battles are mentioned. This one is completely different as is the one that takes place in Illinois. There is one in Georgia too. There is a bit of Carolina overlap in that one but the war is the war. Its facts do not change. Each character who was either Mr. Baggett’s or his wife’s ancestor has a very different story away from their war experience. I am glad I found them and read them.
Geoff Baggett refers to his work as fictional. BUT…
As a resident of the East Coast of the USA, I was very familiar with the names of many of the locations referred to in Geoff’s novels. In fact some of the names; Ford, Mills, Bridge, Crossing, Falls, Forge, etc., are all so very common to this area that their historical importance has been lost over time. I thoroughly enjoyed following the battles and marches through areas that I previously was aware of but I had lost the reverence that should be held precious in our collective minds. Geoff’s work removed the cobwebs of time from my mind regarding the historical significance of living in the area of the east coast of this very precious USA.
I enjoyed the book, especially the Monmouth and Stony Point battles. In your epilogue you mentioned movement to Tennessee and Alabama. Did Thomas and Elizabeth go with him. Did you ever find out what happened to Anne. Was she fiction as well? It took a long time to get to the real interesting parts. That is my only complaint
As usual Mr Baggett has delivered an excellent novel that is both informative and entertaining. The characters are interesting and well developed. Time, place and attention to details is top notch. Quality of writing is excellent, particularly the dialogue between characters. I look forward to the next adventure in the series.
One of my favorite attributes of Geoff Baggett books is consistency. He’s always entertaining and, even better, well researched. Thanks for a fun read!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this, book 7, in this series by Mr. Geoff Baggett. Indeed it was one of my favorites with in the series due to its many unexpected twists and turns. I am, very much, looking forward to reading book 8. I highly recommend the entire series.
Great series, characters are well developed and you grow close to them. The only negative I can really voice is the book wasn't long enough and I wanted more
