When Kirstie watches a neighboring rancher break in new horses, she is appalled by the treatment of one strong-willed mare, Midnight Lady. Determined to save the horse, Kirstie attempts to free her. But her plan backfires and eight horses escape into the mountains. Now Kirstie is in big trouble—should she own up? If she does, will she ever see Midnight Lady again?
Jenny Oldfield was born in 1949 and brought up in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and studied English at Birmingham University.
She has written a large number of books for both children and adults, including the Home Farm Twins, Animal Alert, and Half Moon Ranch series. A horse enthusiast, many of her novels feature horses and are popular among young horse fans.
There was a time when The Horses of Half Moon Ranch were my favourite series of books. Since then I have grown older and less horse mad, which means my enjoyment of these books, whilst still existent, has plummeted. Now that I have reread this book, it will be one that I will be getting rid of, as with the rest of the series.
After seeing the cruel treatment of a horse Kirsty looks at rescuing her and ropes her friend in to help. But things don’t go to plan and instead of freeing the one horse, the girls free a group that escapes to the mountains. This is only going to mean big trouble for the pair.
This is an enjoyable read for any young, horse mad reader. Each book can be read as a standalone although there are some small plot threads than run across books.
