Ruth Kelly is a journalist who has ghosted a string of Sunday Times top ten bestsellers – with The Prison Doctor, having sold over 250,000 copies, and The Governor, going straight in at number one on the Amazon charts and number five in the Sunday Times bestseller list.

Holiday destinations feature heavily in Ruth’s thriller writing having spent most of her life traveling and exploring the world. Her family relocated to Papua New Guinea when she was seven-years-old and the travel bug hasn’t let up since. The simmering threat of what lies beneath the surface, the dichotomy of how paradise can also be hell fascinates Ruth. Making a destination a character in its own right - both a friend and an enemy, not someone to be trusted – is a thread explored throughout her writing.

Serial dater of unobtainable men, and news reporter, Laura, finds herself thrust undercover on
no-holds-barred reality show The Villa, set outside of regulatory oversight at a secret location, and relayed solely on the internet. The show promises to break all known boundaries and promises to be a sensation. The story begins with a detective interviewing Laura after the death of one of the contestants, and then goes on to tell the story of The Villa alongside the post-death interviews by the police.

This absolutely does what it says on the tin; with a double grab of attention from the start, with the reporter infiltrating the reality show; and the detective questioning Laura about the yet to be identified suspicious death. I wolfed this down whilst walking, exercising, travelling, a light read that needs little concentration but makes a compelling read. I must admit to being a huge fan of fictional portrayals of reality shows, so my view is likely biased. Not the best written, characterised or plotted yet that in a way is apt in line with the nature of reality TV itself? A must-read for lovers of summer blockbusters, a firm 8 out of 12, fabulous Four Star read.

2023 read
Also for number one Swiss reviewer Zainab, I got to say that this one is almost a murder-mystery-romance! Indeed!

The Villa is a pacy, dark and suspenseful read that kept me turning the pages. Definitely a great read!

🍹 Storyline 🍹

Laura is a struggling journalist who dislikes her job working at a trashy celebrity gossip magazine. She's offered an undercover assignment by her boss to star on a popular reality dating TV show (very clearly based on the reality TV show "Love Island") and get the scoop on what really goes on on these kind of shows. Laura is hesitant and her worst fears are confirmed when she's accepted onto the show. The contestants on The Villa are filmed 24/7 for a week and the viewers get to decide what happens to the contestants. The ten contestants are all hiding secrets and they'll do whatever it takes to get their hands on the prize money...

🍹 Strengths 🍹

-The story had me hooked. There was a lot of suspense and intrigue. The darkness, drama and backstabbing kept me hooked.

-The twist at the end was very clever and shocking! I did not see it coming!

-The story line and premise was extremely clever and unusual. I've not read a fictional book based on reality TV before.

-The book has many themes that are extremely pertinent to society especially the obsession with reality TV. The story really highlighted the dangers of reality TV which has been an issue raised in recent years especially when it comes to the mental health and duty of care towards contestants. There have been real life cases of former contestants of reality TV shows who have suffered poor mental health as a result of the show and some have even committed suicide.

The story just shows how manufactured and scripted these shows are and what impact viewers have on the narrative. I used to be a bit addicted to shows such as Love Island and Married At First Sight (MAFS) but I stopped watching them after realising how fake and contrived they are. Shows like MAFS claims that couples are matched according to experts and psychological profiling but it's definitely not true. The contestants are purposely mismatched for entertainment value.

Shows like MAFS and Love Island aren't really about love. Very few people on these shows find love. These shows attract contestants with narcissistic personalities or those who are vulnerable and have mental health issues. A lot of the contestants are on the show to boost their profiles and to become famous.

-I liked the psychological depth of the novel and how the psychology of the characters and how they were chosen were explored.

-I liked how the book was told from different perspectives including the viewers of the show, the producer and Laura.

🍹 Weaknesses 🍹

-There weren't really many. Initially I wasn't too keen on the main character Laura. She was weak and insecure, relying on validation from men and lusting after unavailable men who treat her like rubbish. She does grow towards the end of the book though.

🍹 Conclusion 🍹

A well-written and insightful book that explores the dangers and toxic world of reality TV. I definitely recommend this espe those who want to read a gripping psychological thriller.

🍹 Grading 🍹

Characterisation: B+
Ending: A+
Setting: A+
Suspense: A
Writing style: A

Overall grade: A

🍹Will I add this to my bookshelf? 🍹: Definitely! It deserves a spot.

*Obsessive Curiosity*

My pet hate are shows like ‘Big Brother’ ‘Love Island’ and a whole host of reality shows. I am the type if I start watching them they get addictive then I get annoyed and wound up so I prefer to steer clear.

This book is about a reality show that was supposed to be like no other. The audience have total control, they even have access to the heart rates of each contestant. The prize money grows according to how daring things get. No one gets voted off and they all leave when the winner is chosen. There are 10 contestants that seem to be randomly chosen and one amongst them is a journalist undercover trying to discover what secrets lay behind the show.

There is a dark feel as we get the sense that each contestant seems to be hiding secrets that are buried including the journalist but in this high pressure situation, what will come bubbling to the surface.

The producer driven by money, fame and seeing her ideas realised May end up rueing the day this show ever happened when tragedy strikes who will be implicated? The audience she so craved are as flippant as the show….

Plot idea sounded really promising, but the execution was terrible. Two stars because I ploughed on to the end, and finishing a book but rating it one-star says more about me than it does about the book.

If you like massive plot holes and one-dimensional, unlikeable characters, then this is the book for you. If not, give this a swerve.

Ummmm, THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. It kept me guessing the entire time as there were so many secrets popping up everywhere that my mind was always working to figure out what was real or if something was fake. Between the dual timelines of the past and present we try to piece it all together to find out just what’s happened at The Villa, which for me wasn’t easy as there were so many twists and turns in the plot that my head was spinning.

I can easily see this being turned into a TV series or movie, and I’d 1000% watch it because I couldn’t get enough of this book. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Thank you to Pan Macmillan for sending me a proof of this awesome read!

Eén villa, afgesloten van de buitenwereld. Tien deelnemers met geheimen. Ruim negentig camera’s.

I’ve mixed feelings on this. ¾ of the book is a decent beach read, easy, fast paced. The last quarter feels disjointed and loses momentum. Overall I would say it’s fine as a poolside book, but it’s very predictable with stereotypical two-dimensional characters. I had higher hopes given the premise and the authors background. A little reminiscent of Ben Elton’s Dead Famous but not as good.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Brilliant.
An outstanding, addictive and compelling read that grips the reader into compulsively turning the pages.
Anyone who saw the early Big Brother, Love Island, and I’m a Celebrity, will have watched with fascination the media circus as contestants and washed up celebrities break down, go on the attack, and destroy their own lives and careers to an audience of millions. It was compelling viewing that we all participated in. We knew it was base. As entertainment goes, the lowest common denominator. The contestants vulnerable, unstable - we relished every lurid moment like a Victorian freak show.
Unraveling and disordered personalities, locked in together, in an environment designed to ramp up stress, lower inhibitions and detach spiralling inhabitants into forgetting the cameras, the outside world, and personal consequences- what could possibly go wrong? Much did.
In this novel, a woman is found floating face down in a swimming pool on the set of the latest reality show set, watched by millions. None of the contestants are who they seem. All have been pushed to their limits by a voting audience baying for shock, spectacle and blood.
I loved this story because it holds up a mirror to the ugliness, exploitation, and social regression that is prime time entertainment at the beginning of the 21st century. And like those early seasons of Celebrity BB, you won’t be able to tear your eyes away.
An easy 5 stars from me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was fun and enjoyed it. A journalist joins a reality show in a remote, undisclosed location where the viewers decide on what the competitors have to do. The rules change along the way and we know from the start that it ends in death.

From the first chapter I was like “yep I’m deffo gonna enjoy this” the drama THE ANGSTTTT😭😭like something was always happening up until the very end I was like damnnnn but honestly it was so good. Deffo like love island/big brother on crack. I swear psychological thriller (reality tv trope) it so underrated but goated authors should write more reality tv psychological thrillers cause I was INVESTED. the contestants were insane and the plot twistsssss were crazy but overall I loved it

This was an enjoyable holiday read. Great premise based on the popularity of reality TV dating programmes. The twist was the extent to which the viewers could influence the behaviour of the participants. The interest for me lay in the different perspectives- participants, producers, viewers, police. The action accelerated towards the end when it gathered pace and revealed secrets which really took me by surprise. A satisfying conclusion.

4.5* - AD/PR - it is PERFECT if you love a thriller and a reality tv show! I’m officially calling it as my thriller of the summer - it was brilliant! Sooo juicy and full of sun, sea, sex, danger and death!

Basically, I was hooked. Flew through it in one day and couldn’t get enough of all the drama and thoroughly unlikeable characters! There are important messages about toxic media culture and how far it pushes people, and also how we forget that these contestants we judge and obsess over are actual humans. There were some lovely doses of karma dished out and some brilliant twists. You seriously want this in your beach bag this summer!

This was such a fun an interesting concept, so it’s a shame I have to rate it so low. But honestly, I hated it.

Firstly, glaringly: both characters POVs are completely unlikeable with few to no redeeming qualities, Laura is absolutely insufferable. Needy, jealous, naive, fooling around with a married man, always jumping into any relationship, stupid, doing nothing but whining about her lot in life… it’s genuinely hard to read, because she’s so frustrating.

Hell, I hated the way every woman was portrayed in this. It fed into all the worst stereotypes about women and there were literally no redeemable characters, except perhaps Angela.

There was far too much relationship drama. I expected a thriller, particularly playing up the viewers involvement with things that happened in the villa. There was so much potential there, but we got boring love triangles instead and more whingeing.

The writing style also just felt very… childish. I’m fine with simplistic writing, but this read like a particularly long English creative writing project for school. And it absolutely did not need to be 430 pages.

Still gets a star for being compelling and a really cool concept. Just wish it had been executed better - being glad when a book ends is never a good sign.

To be honest this was really not my type of book. I scored it a 2* just on the basis it was easy to read and I got through it quick.

I found the whole thing a bit cliched and obvious. Every character was predictable as was the story line and whilst I think it was trying to let us know about the destructiveness of reality TV I just found it all a bit obvious.

okayyyyy but I loved this!!

read via audio

If you love LOVE ISLAND or any of those reality love shows where people just do it for the plot, then this is the book for you! A reality show that gives similar vibes of Marina Abramović's performance art piece, "RHYTHM 0", where she gave spectators full control over her.

here's what to expect
- one dimensional characters, but I feel like when you're writing about a reality show, that's the deal; misogynistic men, catty women
- jealousy, bitterness, backstabbing!!
- secret secluded island setting
- the reality show is actually happening, and not just a small feature of the book
- a whiny, insecure, co-dependent FMC, but again, I think that if she wasn't, this story wouldn't have worked out
- multiple POV's, and dual timelines
- if you're looking for the next great American novel, this is not it. Heavy and dark themes, but still, this is a summer popcorn thriller, so treat it as such

one star off for Laura giving grace to Cameron at the end for what he did bc no!!! straight to jail

"Love Island" z morderczym twistem.

4.5 - 5 ⭐

Another great read.

The Villa is told from different POVs.

Love Island gone wrong, a dark, gripping and suspenseful page turner.

Short chapters made this a quick and easy to read book.

The ending..... Didn't see it coming!

Would highly recommend 💕
