The last thing Jenna Landry wants is to fall in love. The former rock musician is getting ready to start a new job and a new life in LA, and she's only back in her hometown for the summer. Nothing could tempt her to stay any longer than that... not even the sexy doctor next door.
Michael Stone has a reputation for being as cold as ice. So what is it about his free-spirited neighbor that sets him on fire? The straitlaced MD has his hands full with his career and his teenage daughter, and even if he were looking for a relationship, he knows Jenna is all wrong for him.

I read everything, but I especially love YA, MG, mystery, romance, sci fi, and fantasy.
I loved this book. I started and finished this sweet romantic story in one night! It's almost 1AM and I'm too tired to write much more-LOL. The hero was a perfect mix of alpha and beta and the heroine was a smart and complicated woman. Based on the reviews I've read I wasn't expecting a lot of steam but I was very pleasantly surprised. So for me this book had it all and will be going on my keeper shelf!
I've read books this year about characters with commitment issues, but this, by far, tops it all.
Main male dude ( Forgive me, it's 2:00 am) wants to reconnect with his daughter, so he knocks on the door of his beautiful neighbour to help him. His daughter is a fan of his neighbour's band. Needless to say, there was instant attraction.
All in all, I finished it, so it was okay. If you're looking for a simple, light hearted read, stay away. He loves her, she loves him, and it could not be any more obvious, but they make everything so complicated.
Main male lead was not an idiot. In fact, he was the most sensible person in the book, but his daughter makes him out to be like he's eight. It is perfectly obvious that he wants a more lasting relationship with the heroine, he tells her so, but she blatantly rejects him. Why? Partly because he never confesses that he loves her. O.o say what? How could he do that when she makes clear merest thought of a relationship with him makes her cringe?
Heroine wants nothing to do with him. She tells him so many times I lost count. Then she comes back and kind of goes: 'hey, am I still welcome? By the way, I love you too'- Like she could just pop her head in and be part of their lives again and the rejection never happened.
Cute ending, but so predictable and the characters are so indecisive, you want to whisk them away from the book and slap some sense into them.
I enjoyed this book and plan to go back and read the first book in this series The Millionaire's Wish. Through the course of the book we see the scientific doctor hero, break loose and become more human as well as connect with his teenage daughter and even have the courage to ask her to stay as well open his heart and take a chance.
The heroine was part of a famous band and they are getting back together. Since, she turned 30 she is struggling with things, change actually, she sees that she has mellowed down and she does not want to lose her edge. She loves her family but she does not want to settle down since the one time she thought she was ready, she got heart-break, so despite her strong chemistry with the hero she does not want to act on it, she is leaving soon and wants to be friends and make him more adventurous as well as strengthen his bond with his daughter.
It was great seeing these both struggle to remain friends and fail. The hero is more conducive to change but it takes the heroine a long while as well some distance to see that she could indeed balance out things in life and did not have to get a personality transplant.
I enjoyed the unique storyline of a heart surgeon hero, "Michael," and the heroine, "Jenna," who happened to be an ex-rock star and also his neighbor. (Oh, if life could be that convenient!) As luck would have it, Michael's 14 year old daughter, "Claire," helps draw these two complete opposites together, as she recognizes the infamous, "Jenna Landry," from the band, the "Red Mollies."
Fire ignites between the pair and life's challenges start to rear it's ugly head for them both...although, not before several steamy, (really steamy), love scenes! Phew, get me a drink of water!! Anyway, I enjoyed this book very much and it kept my attention the entire read! The $.99 price was a welcomed sight, too, which made the experience even sweeter!! Grab this book for a quick, sexy getaway and ENJOY!
My last book of 2012. CROSS MY HEART was a sweet read about the choices we make and where they can take you in life.
Former lead guitarist in the bad Red Mollies, Jenna Landry never wants to be confined in one place. When she turns up back in her home town for the summer teaching music and house sitting for her aunt, she’s not expecting to be pulled in by her next door neighbor and his daughter.
Michael Stone is a leading cardiac surgeon, but when it comes to his 14 year old daughter, Claire, he’s totally lost. When he picks her up from the airport for her annual 2 week stay, it starts out like any other, with total silence and awkwardness.
That changes when Claire recognizes Jenna and for the first time, she talks to him non-stop about Jenna’s career. Never seeing Claire light up like this in a while, he’s determined to do something about it.
Going to Jenna’s door, he’s prepared to beg for her to come met Claire, but Jenna is game and accepts his dinner invitation.
Just like that, the three hit it off really well. It’s not long before Jenna and Claire are fast friends and Jenna comes up with music to help bridge the gap between father and daughter.
Jenna and Michael on the other hand seem doomed from the start. With Jenna totally against being held back, a previous experience taught her never to give up her dreams for someone, it seems like the only choice Michael has is to accept Jenna’s stance especially when one amazing night doesn’t change her mind.
Except for a certain 14 year old who’s determined to give her dad dating advice on how to win Jenna over. I really liked the fact that Claire was important to the story and that she liked Jenna just as much as Michael.
As Michael struggles with wanting to ask Claire to stay and fearing she’d say no, Jenna’s band seems on the way to getting back together. Something she’s determined to want.
With Claire giving him a yes and coming back in 2 weeks, Michael tries the same question on Jenna, but leaves out an important reason. Now, they’re just set on a 2 week burn out schedule to get it out of their systems.
Except the plan backfires; Claire comes back and Jenna leaves for her tour. Seeing a show only concerts the realization that he can’t ask Jenna to give it all up for him, even if he does love her and he slides the ring back in his pocket.
Only life on the road doesn’t satisfy her. When the band decides to take a slow pace it seems fate is giving her a sign.
Finding herself back in Michael’s arms, with a ring on her finger, and Claire squeal of excitement, Jenna has finally found her home.
For the bargain price of 99-cents I got a real deal!! A cardiac surgeon raising a 14-year old daughter meets rock-n-roll and a whole lot more! An easy, fun and "magical" story that grabbed my heart from the first page. I loved the chemistry between the doc and the rocker. The scenes between father and daughter were so realistic, a little heart-wrenching -- and sometimes pure laughter as the daughter tries to make changes in her dad's stoic life. The characters were delightful and lovable, the romance sizzled, and the musical influence detailed perfectly. Just a plain good-time read that you shouldn't miss if you love romance!
#beklenmedikbiranda cidden bekledigimin ustunde çıktı. Michael ve Claire'in aile olabilme çabaları birbiriyle olan iliskileri cok güzeldi. Ahhh cocuklu kitaplara dayanamiyorummm *_* (cocuk 14 yasinda olsa bile :D ) gozlerim doluyor elimde degil.
Jenna kendine has oldukca dobra bir karakterdi.
Ayrıca Michael'in duygularina hakim olamayıp kıskanç erkek moduna girdigi bolumleri okumak cok komikti :D
BEAUTIFUL! SWEET! SEXY! (but not too much...:)) This story spoke to my heart...I loved it! I enjoyed this grown-up story about grown-up people with real life problems and real life emotions. The main characters were so likeable! This author has an amazing talent for creating characters that are so real and believable. I got completely involved in their life and I find myself missing them! Definitely recommend!! For the more sensitive reader...graphic love scenes.
This book was such a gem! I got it as a free ebook on amazon but I'd happily have paid full hardback RRP for it, because it was so wonderful.
This book was the first one of Abigail Strom's stories that I had read, and as it is the second in the verse I can't wait to download the others centred around the same family.
'Cross My Heart' is a heart-warming story of family, friendship and love, and it starts with a bang.
“I hate you.”
Michael Stone glanced over at the passenger seat, where his fourteen year old daughter slouched down with folded arms.
“I know.”
*shivers* Already I wince in sympathy. Having been a fourteen year old girl once I can easily relate to being overly dramatic and hormonal, but poor Michael. It can’t be easy knowing that your daughter hates your guts.
The back story reveals that Michael’s life revolves around his job as a surgeon, and despite his attempts to spend time with his daughter Claire, who lives with her Grandmother in another state, Claire doesn’t look like she’s planning to enter him into a ‘Father of the Year’ contest.
“Forget it, okay? Just forget it. I don’t know why I even try to make you understand. Just because you happened to contribute some sperm during the conception process doesn’t mean you care about me.”
Low blow really, but it’s clear already that Claire has some demons, and already I am yearning to know more about why Claire has such a deep dislike for her father.
Her mother, with whom Michael has an amicable divorce with ten years before, died in a car accident, leaving Claire in the care of her Grandparents. Something that Michael, despite his desire to have a good relationship with his daughter, has no imminent desire to change. As he believes he is far too busy to provide a proper home for his almost estranged daughter, who is clearly happy elsewhere.
“Then Claire reached out to turn on the radio, scanned quickly though the channels, and settled on a song that sounded as much like music as a bone saw. He put up with it for a few minutes before turning the radio off again.”
The differences between Claire and Michael hit me round the head, and immediately I want to see their relationship improved. But I know already it’s going to be a hard road if Michael can’t even listen to a few minutes of Claire’s favourite music.
In an amusing twist of fate, Michael’s next door neighbour happens to be Jenna Landry, “only the lead guitarist for the Red Mollies, one of the greatest all-girl bands in the entire history of rock and roll. At least until they broke up a few years ago.”
Michael’s assessment of the situation is one that all readers will agree with, even having only read 5 pages into the book.
"The universe had sent his polar opposite to live next door to him, encased in the most beautiful body he’d ever laid eyes on."
As only a fourteen year old girl could do so well, Claire lays on the guilt as he explains that he’s never spoken to his neighbour, and desperate at trying to bridge the gap that has grown with his daughter in their absence, Michael desperately knocks on Jenna Landry’s door, hoping that she’d join them for dinner.
Jenna is fun, free and loves life. Staying in her Aunt’s house while she’s away on an extended holiday, Jenna feels unsure about being so close to home. Despite having a great relationship with her family, Jenna left home as soon as possible, wanting to explore the big wide world to her heart’s content, singing and playing guitar as she went. But since her younger sister’s death, the suggestions that she should live closer to home seems to weigh on her more, and worry seeps through her that she will end up being domesticated. Determined to keep her wild side, she is psyching herself up for her ex-bands reunion tour and hoping that it’ll bring a new direction to her life.
I loved Jenna from the start, seeing how normal she was, was greatly refreshing. So often we hear in the gossip columns about the big bad world of media and how actresses and musicians go off the deep end in a haze of fame, drugs and alcohol. Jenna couldn’t have been more the opposite. She shows us the side that the gossip columns don’t want us to know, the kind, fun and generous side to celebrities.
Having been shamelessly "oggling" her next door neighbour Michael since she moved in, she is more than surprised when he asks her over to dinner in an attempt to help him win over his daughter.
And so begins a wonderful story of family, friendship and love all tied up together beautifully.
Jenna and Claire make it their mission to teach Michael everything there is to know about music, and despite his aversion to the idea at first, he soon finds himself immersed in a world of music that helps him understand and build a powerful relationship with his daughter.
As Michael and Claire’s relationship develops we also see a connection between Michael and Jenna, and I loved how Jenna and Michael realised that in order to have functional and loving relationships, they had to make sacrifices elsewhere in their life.
This story was a fantastic read. 5 stars and a definite recommended read.
Jenna Landry has come home to Iowa to spend the summer teaching a music class. As one of the former band members of rock band The Mollies, she has had her share of follies but when she meets neighbor Michael Stone and his teenage daughter, she feels an attachment she never wanted with another person.
Michael doesn't know what it is about Jenna, who is completely opposite of him, but he can't stop thinking about her. Her unique perspective about his daughter has made for their short visit to finally be what he always hoped it would be. As he comes up with an arrangement to tame the desire building between them, he finds he is not willing to just let it go, but Jenna is a free spirit and he does not want to every stifle the bright light she radiates for those around her.
I liked this, it is a bit melancholy in spots but overall had a great story. Michael is very rigid in his ways, if he can't scientifically explain it he doesn't get it. Jenna exudes emotion which leaves Michael wondering if he is missing some important lessons in life. Fun read.
This is a beautiful story about taking a chance on love even when it means risking heartache and heartbreak. It's a perfect example of how opposites attract but, in this particular case, Michael and Jenna had enough in common in the most important of areas to have some semblance of hope in making a relationship work between them.
It was a wonderful journey and the sexual interludes in the book belonged; it wasn't written to just fill a few pages but was part of showing just how vulnerable Michael and Jenna were when it came to their feelings for each other, even if they tried to ignore them and pretend they didn't exist.
Michael's daughter, Claire, also enhanced the story and it was wonderful to see how a strained relationship between father and daughter began to take on a semblance of normalcy.
A very refreshing story which tells us that we don't always have to make a choice between an important person in our lives and something which is part of us. If we have the right partner for us, we can have both.
First, the book was very well written. Michael is a single dad, whose daughter lives with her grandparents in Florida, but comes to Iowa for her summer visit. He doesn't know how to relate to a teenage girl, so in comes Jenna, his sexy next door neighbor. Claire is a fan of Jenna, who was in a popular band before they split up, so that is the perfect opportunity for him to meet her. They are both attracted to each other, but she is just house sitting for the summer and does not want to get involved. The remainder of the book walks you through the angst of being a single dad trying to develop his relationship with his daughter, while also falling for woman who doesn't want to take the fall for a great guy. He's a control freak, she's a committment-phobe, so yes, there are issues especially with trying to make sure no one, including Claire gets hurt. I really enjoyed this story and unlike others I've read, the ending was not abrupt. Some endings are rushed or seem to feel like they will lead to something else, but this one doesn't.
CROSS MY HEART 5* June 23rd. This novel has been lurking on my kindle for a long, long time. Every time I passed it over, I felt vaguely guilty for making it wait yet again for my attention. Today it succeeded :) I soon realised that I had been side-lining a good-tempered, happy read.
Ms Strom has crafted delightful characters whose charm made the hours pass swiftly : Michael - gorgeous, hunky but not arrogant, Claire - typical moody teenager, and Jenna - former rock star who has matured into a warm, caring adult. These people are not flawless by any means, but aren't afraid to show their humanity in the way they relate to each other and to the people in their pasts.
The plot is believable and the sexy bits not over the top. There is just enough angst to stir the pot and the character's reactions to circumstances not appearing to go their way, are depicted with none of the traditional histrionics much indulged in by some romance writers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written, good-natured novel and would like to read more of this author's work. :)
The romance genre has many branches. My interest lies in clean romance, preferably written by authors who hold and promote high moral standards. In this offering by Abigail Strom I found an author who can grab your attention and hold it. Her writing style flows with meaningful and realistic dialogue. I became very much involved in a well written story until about half way through the book when she took her protagonists into a pornographic romp. Skimming through the pages I found it to be a lengthy romp. This spoiled the whole story for me. It is one thing to hint at sexual promiscuity, but it is something else to go into the graphic detail on display here. Skilled authors do themselves a major disservice by lowering themselves into the gutter in an attempt to attract a following. Consequently, I abandoned reading this book at this point and am returning the additional three books by Abigail Strom that were on my reading schedule.
I had a huge cheesy grin on my face while I read this book. It was romantic and funny. Plus, it had just the right amount of sweet and sexy. I adored Cross My Heart by Abigail Strom.
This is how the book starts:
“I hate you.” Michael Stone glanced over at the passenger seat, where his fourteen year old daughter slouched down with folded arms. “I know.” She shook her head. “You only think you know. This isn’t some teenage drama thing, Dad. This is Count of Monte Cristo hatred.” He raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to spend the next thirty years plotting revenge?” “I’m just saying I won’t forget this. Ever. And I’ll never forgive you. The day I turn eighteen, I swear you’re never going to see me again.”
First off, how many people remember conversations similar to that one with their parents? I know I do. Second, how freaking funny is the Count of Monte Cristo hatred comment? I re-read this page a couple times. It cracked me up and brought me back to my days as an adolescent.
I am normally skeptical about novels where the main character has children, especially older children. I don’t have children so being a parent isn’t something I can easily relate to. I don’t know exactly what it’s like to be in the parent’s shoes, but I do remember what it’s like to be a bratty teenager. Surprisingly, I found that I could relate to the characters in this novel. I connected with Claire, Michael’s daughter, from experience, and because I am older now, I really felt the effects that Claire’s sulks, eye rolls, and bad attitudes had on Michael.
This love story is hot. Michael and Jenna may be polar opposites but that doesn’t stop the electric sparks that fly whenever they are within 100 miles of each other. They have loads of sexual tension. Their love story is also realistic, and I love the way it ends.
I gave Cross My Heart by Abigail Storm 4 STARS. This book kept me engaged, made me laugh out loud and kept me rooting for the characters. It’s extremely entertaining. I loved the characters, the plot, and the conclusion. I think this is a great novel, and I strongly recommend it to others.
This romance novel made me keep happy and complete. I enjoyed this book by Abigail Strom. This is my first book of her's to read. Dr. Michael Stone is a Cardiac Surgeon in Iowa. He is the father of a 14 yo daughter who lives with her grandparents in Florida. He only sees her for a few weeks in the summer. Their relationship is difficult to say the least. The story starts out with him picking her up at the airport for their annual summer two weeks together. Being the typical teenager, she is not pleased. They pull up to his house, and Claire, is freaking out when she sees his next door neighbor moving in to the house. Michael had of course noticed that the woman was beautiful, but he did not act on his impression. Claire informs him that she is Jenna Landry, part of her favorite band, The Mollies. Michael realizes that his daughter is awe struck and decides this would be an opportunity to please her, for once, but introducing her to her idol. He also realizes, this will give him the opportunity to finally meet her up close. So, the fun begins. They meet, spend time together. Jenna has a way of helping Michael and Claire get a long. The build up and chemistry between Michael and Jenna is so sweet and believable. I loved their moments together. Michael was finally letting his protective walls down. Music is a huge part of this story, and I loved that. Teenage angst and heartbreak unfold. Learning to accept your faults, and believe in one's self, oh, so good. Being an Iowa girl, I loved the positive vibes from how it fit in the story about a girl from the good old Midwest. Jenna's family ties and bonds are there, I appreciated that, that was not a huge part of the story. I am happy with the ending, and thrilled to know there are more books to go along with this series. I really connected to the characters. The story and plot are strong. It is a sweet story. I would recommend it to my friends, for sure.
Characters were described as Jenna, a former rock musician, Michael, a heart surgeon reputed to be cold, and his 14-year-old daughter. To me it sounded pretty run-of-the-mill, but it was anything but. The characters felt very real. Usually parent/child relations in these stories don’t do much for me, but here the interaction and chemistry was good, the dialogue was terrific. A fun, thoughtful read. Billed as a contemporary romance novel, I thought Cross My Heart was much more. It had romance, but more; and it had sex, but not erotica, not sex just for the sake of having it. A nice blend. Thanks to my mother-in-law living at our home for part of each year, in recent years I’ve been introduced to romance books, not my usual choice of reading. Most are pretty predictable, but still, surprising to me, many are fun, light reads. The opening dialogue in Cross My Heart was delightful and put a smile on my face, but in spite of that offered me no clue that it would be much different. But it was! The further I read, the more I enjoyed it. They should have a category beyond “romance.” This was much more and very well done!
How could anyone find fault in this book? I loved it. Once I started it I read it in an afternoon. Jenna is a famous guitarist and Michael a doctor. Though she has an unusual career she is the kind of woman character I love to read about. I feel like she could be my sister or best friend, while she is tough and kind all once. She is so likeable that it makes the entire book nothing but likeable. I love that as she falls in love she holds onto her own dreams and career plans as both approach the relationship with commitment and love, but also like adults, with other responsibilities (like jobs) and things that fill their lives. I enjoyed the relationship both main characters had with Micheal's teenage daughter and how the author wrote Clare as a teenager. I found this a refreshing, relate able, lovely contemporary romance. I will be getting more of this author's books. She is a new favorite of mine. Truly a wonderful read.
My Gosh! This book was awesome! Perfect, even. And shockingly, it's FREE on Amazon right now. (Go get it now! No reason not to.)
I LOVED it. I was expecting something light and cheesy, but what I got had more depth than what I had anticipated. The characters were by far the biggest draw for me. Strom's characterization was just--ahh--wonderful. Both Jenna and Michael stayed true to themselves, despite all those opportunities for Strom to take the easy, cliched path for the HEA. I'm so glad Strom didn't, and I really appreciated how she conveyed the differences between the two characters without resorting to stereotypes. Moreover, watching the budding father/daughter relationship between Michael and Claire was just sweet. Wow. For a relatively short story, I was surprised at how drawn into it I was.
Well this wasn't an award winner but it wasnt atrocious either. I dont normally like books with kids too much but this girl kept things pretty funny. The plot was pretty standard for romance books-a couple from opposite ends of every spectrum there is then struggle to reconcile differences. The writing was ok-again not going to win any awards-but i only rolled my eyes a couple times. The characters were ok. The hero was a little cold for my tastes but he has some really sweet moments that make up for it. the heroine is more my speed. i love her free spirit and big heart though i wouldve liked to see her be a little more...idk proactive about dealing with her issues. the overall tone was more sweet than sexy but the sex scenes were still pretty steamy. Overall not a bad way to spend a couple hours but i dont know that id read it again
Very sweet book about two opposites attracting. The common ground being attraction (of course) and a young 14 year old girl. Unlike some stories I've read, Claire is actually a contribution to this story where usually the child detracts from the story or annoys me with their bad attitude. In this story though, she helps bring them together without being a brat or making me wish she wasn't around. I loved how they fell in love but let their relationship come naturally and the only "fighting the relationship" that happened was because the heroine had previous commitments. Definitely will read more from this author.
I liked all the characters, pacing was good, storyline was good. But there wasn't anything to take it to the next level. I wish there was more than one song lyric or he would have contintued to speak medical lingo. As it was aside from 2 musical entries & 1 medical riff the author could have plugged in lawyer/stewardess, or any workalcoholic/traveller job combo she wanted. Like a romantic movie, it didn't feel like they really had jobs, it was more like they were actors playing a musican and a doctor.
THANK YOU MARIA...for lending this amazing love story!! Holy quick read Batman! I flew this in no time at all! I absoutely LOVED Michael (Dr. Stone), his daughter Claire and Jenna! What a great, romantic, beautiful love story with the most perfect Happy Ever After ending!! Had me tearing up at times and rooting for the main characters to finally get together! FIVE STARS ALL AROUND!! Loved this so much!
This was such a sweet book and it was nice to see the "cold" doctor flare up with passion.. I like the characters and Jennas struggle to not loose her edge, to discover who she wants to be....
growing older gave me an edge and not the other way around :-p but I get that it might be scary for some people believing the loosing it by getting older and changing pace in life
I found it impossible to stop reading this last night. Really sweet story with believable characters. The tension between the 2 main characters means this possibly isn't suitable for people who don't like that type of thing, but there is a minimum of actually explicit scenes (which is good - had there been more I would have enjoyed this less). Reminded me quite a lot of Nora Roberts writing.
My Rating System 3 stars - Good book. I enjoyed it. 4 stars – Struck a chord, made me think or question 5 stars – Something about it haunted or stayed with me long after I finished it. Unforgettable. ************************ 3.75 stars
A reluctant love story that hit all the right notes. Couldn't put it down until I finished it,
So, I went searching for a book that I could lose myself in and a friend recommended this one. Figured its free, so I'll take a chance. And I'm glad I did. What an amazing story! I found myself tearing up several times, really feeling very ounce of Michael, Jenna, and Claire's heartache. Ell done to the author and I look forward to more of her work.
