This work of historical fiction by Frederick Buechner deals with an 11th Century saint, whose life Buechner takes from his youth to his life as a 100 year old plus venerated spiritual leader. What I liked best about this story is that we see things from his perspective, where we see all his sins and foibles. The rest of the church more and more just sees certain saintly actions, but he is acutely aware of his own mixed motivations, his lusts, and his less-than-noble actions done out of the spotlight. But this is not a story of hypocrisy. Rather it is an account of how a good person can sometimes only see their dark shadow side, while it takes the viewpoint of others to see the good they have done.
